Genevieve Moss has serious hearing loss. Her world has always been silent. And in her life, alone in town in England, she often felt lonely.
Then one day in April 2021, something stopped Moss as she read the local newspaper. It was a photo of a tiny black-and-white cat. A family was looking for a home for their last newborn kitten.Moss immediately(立刻)fell in love with the cat and contacted the family.Soon, the deal was sealed. Moss called the cat Zebby because his colors look like those of a zebra.
Moss had heard of studies showing that pets can help people deal with loneliness. However, she had no idea that Zebby would become her helper and her ears. From their first night together, Zebby has slept next to her. When he hears noises in the dark, he jumps up. “He became my night watch cat," Moss said.“Sometimes,he would run around the room until I woke up.”
After several weeks, Moss noticed that whenever her phone rang or someone knocked at the door, Zebby would tap her. It wasn't long before the cat took on another task: collecting Moss's mail. Now, whenever he hears the mailbox being opened, he runs towards it, carries the mail in his mouth and drops it at Moss's feet.
This past July, Zebby was named Britain's National Cat of the Year by the Cats Protection, the largest cat charity in the U.K. Moss was amazed by the news. Moss has had no training at all, but his instincts seem to have told him that his owner needs his help.
“Zebby has made my house a home,” Moss said. “I can hardly imagine not having Zebby in my life now.”

“It's all right," said the pilot. “I'm doing this to heat the air in the balloon. " Jamal tipped back his head. High above him was the opening of the huge, bright balloon. He looked over the edge of the basket. The basket was tied with ropes to keep it close to the ground. But suddenly, it started to rock and rise up.
“Here we go!" said Dad, and smiled happily at Jamal.
Jamal bit his lip(嘴唇). “I'm not sure I am going to like this,”he said.
People on the ground untied the ropes, and the balloon with its basket of passengers kept rising up into the air.It wasn't like taking off in an airplane. Instead, the balloon was floating(漂浮)up gently into the morning sky.
Soon Jamal, Dad, and the pilot could see far across the trees. “Look, there's the lake!" said Dad. Jamal saw a blue piece on the ground. The big lake was suddenly tiny! The trees looked like green cotton balls. The fields looked like pieces of a quilt.
As the balloon floated on, Jamal felt less and less afraid. He started pointing al things, too,"Look,Dad,there's my school! And there's our house!" Jamal could see his tree house in the backyard, and the shed where he kept his bicycle. The whole house and yard looked smaller than one of his fingernails. Then Jamal looked ahead into the blue sky. Have you ever thought about the fact that most of what you own will one day be thrown out? Think about your clothes, the TV, and the stove(炉子).They will tear or break down.Or you may just want to get new, better things. But where do things go when you throw them out
The bad news is that most of them go to a landfill. A landfill is a big hole in the ground. It may have a concrete(混凝土)or plastic liner. This liner keeps chemicals from seeping into the groundwater around the landfill. Trash trucks filled with all the things that people throw out go to the landfill. They drop their loads into the hole. Bulldozers(推土机)cover everything with soil. But there is a better way. And since we are running out of landfill space, more people are doing it.
The better way is recycling. Recycling lets many things be used again. Give away an old TV or stove. They can be fixed so that someone else can use them. Clothes can be sent to people who need them. Most glass, paper, plastic, and metal are recyclable. When people recycle these things, it helps theenvironment. It saves space in landfills.(Paper takes up more space in landfills than any other thing!) And instead of wasting these materials, they get used again.
Some people have recycling bins. They put their paper, metal, glass, and plastic into the bin. A special truck takes these things to a processing center. Other people must drive to a recycling center and drop off their things.
What happens at the recycling center? Paper is shredded(切碎)and then mixed with water and wood pulp to make new paper. Glass, metal, and plastic are melted down. Then they are poured into molds to form new things.Glass jars are melted down and become new glass jars. Recycling lets things be used over and over.
( )27. Which of the following cannot be recycled
A. Dirty paper. B. Plastic bags. C.Dirty bananas. D. Soda cans.
( )28. What happens to glass jars that you throw out instead of recycling
A.They take up space in a landfill.
B. They get reused as food containers.
C. They slowly rot and turn back into soil.
D. People dig through the trash, find them, and send them to a recycling center.
( )29. What is the most important reason to recycle paper
A. A lot of people are doing it. B. It keeps the cost of paper low.

( )30. Which of the following is true
