“A good book is easy to find.” That is the message on a sign at Hernando Guanlao’s home in the Makati area of Manila, the capital city of the Philippines.”
Guanlao has transformed his home into a free public library. Visitors can borrow the books inside for free. Guanlao says he hopes his library will inspire people to read especially the young.
The 72-year-old told reporters that his library includes books that all students can enjoy —— from young children in Kindergarten to older students in grade 12. And also his library has books for readers of all interests. His home is filled with thousands of available books.
He calls his library Reading Club 2000. It contains many different kinds of books, or genres. Genre is a group of artistic, musical, or literary works that share a particular style, form, or content. “There are history books, novels, children stories in my library,” Guanlao added proudly, “and there are cookbooks, science fiction, and even medicine books.” Almost everyone can find a suitable book, all for free.
He started his library more than 20 years ago when he set 50 books on the walkway in front of his home. Guanlao’s collection has grown greatly over the years —— thanks to a continuous supply of books from donors.
Speaking of donors, he said, “They just leave boxes of books outside my house.” He has also started donating books himself. He sends reading materials to public schools in far-away communities.
Guanlao’s efforts come at a time when reading ability among students in the Philippines remains low. The Program for International Student Assessment reports that reading scores in the Philippines are among the lowest in the world. Students in the Philippines are also facing learning delays in math and science.
Guanlao is firm about his goals, “My mission is to give away used and donated books to others at no cost,” he said, “and to promote education through literature.”
4. What’s the purpose of Guanlao’s setting up his home library

D. To help people find jobs more easily
5. Which of the following words best describe Guanlao’s personality
A. Devoted and caring B. Outgoing and brave
C. Humorous and considerate D. Ambitious and impatient
6. What contributes to his growing book collection most
A. His own effort to collect books continuous B. The government’s help and support
C. Warm-hearted people’s continuous donations D. Help from public schools in far-away communities
7. Which part of the newspaper can this passage likely come from
A. science report B. sports C. fashion D. education

The Indian government may use 3D paintings as virtual speed breakers (减速带) on major highways and roads, in order to check speeding and careless driving, and finally make its deadly roads a little safer. “We are trying out 3D paintings used as virtual speed breakers to avoid unnecessary requirements of speed breakers,” India’s transport minister Nitin Gadkari wrote.
The optical illusions (视觉错觉) are supposed to encourage drivers to slow down automatically. Earlier, India had ordered the removal of all speed breakers from highways, which are considered to be a safety hazard for high-speed vehicles. India has the highest number of road accident deaths in the world. According to the World Health Organisation, over 200,000 people are killed by road accidents.
The use of optical illusions as speed breakers was first pioneered in the American city of Philadelphia in 2008, as part of a campaign against speeding motorists. The technique has also been tried out in China to create floating 3D crossings. In India, cities such as Ahmedabad and Chennai have already experimented with 3D zebra crossings in the last one year. In Ahmedabad for instance, a mother and her daughter, both artists, have painted 3D crosswalks in the first few months of 2016. The artists say their motto is “to increase the attention of drivers”, and that the concept (理念) has been successfully tested in accident-prone zones (事故多发区) on a highway.
However, critics argue that once drivers know that these speed breakers are visual illusions, they may ignore them. Others also point out that India’s decision does not consider the safety of a large number of pedestrians. In the end, the new policy may be just one step towards improving road safety.
8. Why are 3D paintings used on main highways and roads
A. To make the surroundings more beautiful. B. To attract the attention of tourists.
C. To reduce the rate of traffic accidents. D. To show the advanced technology.
9. Which of the following words is closest to the meaning of “hazard” in paragraph 2
A. Reminder. B. Threat. C. Regulation. D. Theory.
10. What can we learn from Paragraph 3 and 4
A. People have different opinions about the use of optical illusions as speed breakers.
B. Philadelphia is the second place to use virtual speed breakers in the US.
C. The idea tested in Ahmedabad recently has been a failure.
D. The new policy of 3D zebra crossings must be carried out.
11. What’s the author’s attitude to Indian’s 3D zebra crossings
A. Supportive. B. Negative. C. Objective. D. Subjective.
D
Scientists have determined that July 2023 was the hottest month on record and that the Earth’s average surface temperature is the highest it’s been in at least 120,000 years.
There’s no shortage of advice for people in hotter-than-normal regions. They can wear a sun hat or stay in the shade (阴凉处). And when all else fails, go inside and turn the air conditioning on.
But wild creatures can’t enjoy the cool air indoors. Many people assume that wild species must have some ways of dealing with these unusually high temperatures. However, most of them can’t. If their body temperatures go too high or too low, they will die. So in addition to finding food and avoiding enemies, every wild creature must continually engage in an ongoing exchange of energy with their environments to ensure survival.
Birds do this by getting out of the direct sun, sitting still, and breathing shallow breaths. In short, they do nothing but breathe in the shade. This behavior is usually successful because it enables most birds to survive most of the very hot days. But it wrecks their schedule. Many birds no longer have enough time in their days to find enough food to remain healthy, especially the extra food needed to raise their young.
It’s not only birds that are suffering from heat, nor is it only land species: animals in the ocean are also suffering. The largest analysis (分析) of coral reef (珊瑚礁) health found that 14% of the world’s coral reefs had been lost in the previous decade due to heat. Another recent study predicts (预测) that over 99% of coral reefs will experience heat that they cannot recover from if the global average temperature increases by just 1.5 degrees Celsius, which, unless we massively reduce our carbon emissions, is likely to happen in the next decades.
Heat is damaging ecosystems everywhere, and we’re just in the early stages of climate breakdown. Humans are highly adaptable. The vast majority of wild species, however, can’t simply pack up and go someplace else. By continuing to pollute the atmosphere, we’re damaging their worlds and pushing ever-greater numbers of them into extinction.
12. How do wild species differ from humans in handling rising heat
A. They can migrate to cooler environments. B. They are better at cooperating with each other.
C. They have limited methods for adapting to it. D. They are more resistant to heat-related health issues.
13. What does the underlined word “wrecks” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Represents. B. Disturbs. C. Adopts. D. Meets.
14. What does the author want to show by mentioning coral reefs
A. Land species are more easily affected by heat.
B. Heat can cause serious trouble for different wildlife.
C. Coral reefs are of great value to coastal communities.
D. Underwater creatures have adopted ways to control heatwaves.
15. What does the last paragraph imply
A. Wildlife can adapt quickly to various environments.
B. Wild species have more natural enemies to deal with.
C. Ecosystems may naturally recover from heat damage.
D. Immediate action is required to protect ecosystems.

I was never a fast runner and thus I always didn’t like running. Throughout my childhood, whenever we competed in the 50-meter run, the 400-meter, or any other type of race, I would always end up with the last one among all the athletes. Therefore, twenty years later, when I entered into my first official running race—a 3,000-meter challenge in my city—at age 38, I certainly didn’t expect to win or earn any prize.
I learned about the race from my friend Jim. He told me that the race was aimed at raising money for the unfortunate patients in a hospital and encouraging the patients and their families to be brave. Since it was a heartwarming program, I showed up, paid the entrance fee and moved over to the starting line. Before long, someone spoke into a microphone. “Anyone weighing over 200 pounds comes down to the scale (秤), please.” Knowing I was over 200 pounds, I walked down to the scale: A man told me to stand on it. “Two hundred and three pounds,” he said. Then he wrote down the race number and pinned (把……别在) it on my back. Out of curiosity, I asked him why he did so, and then I was told there would be an award ceremony (仪式) after the race. One award was for the first finisher in the over 200-pound group, and this special award would be announced at the end of the ceremony.
Then started the race. Not realizing there were only two runners weighing over 200 pounds, I gathered all my strength to run in my burning heat. Although other runners gradually passed me along the way, I kept moving forward as fast as I could and struggled to make it to the finish line. Despite the tiredness, I was satisfied, for I could try my best to help those in need by running. Shortly after the race, the award ceremony began and several awards were presented.
Then came the last award and to my surprise, my name was announced.

“A good book is easy to find.” That is the message on a sign at Hernando Guanlao’s home in the Makati area of Manila, the capital city of the Philippines.”
Guanlao has transformed his home into a free public library. Visitors can borrow the books inside for free. Guanlao says he hopes his library will inspire people to read, especially the young.

A. Supportive. B. Negative. C. Objective. D. Subjective.
C 9. B 10. A 11. C
根据第一段中“The Indian government may use 3D paintings as virtual speed breakers (减速带) on major highways and roads, in order to check speeding and careless driving, and finally make its deadly roads a little safer. (印度政府可能会在主要高速公路和道路上使用3D绘画作为虚拟减速带,以检查超速和粗心驾驶,最终使其致命的道路更加安全)”可知,在高速路上使用3D绘画的目的是减少交通事故,使道路更安全。故选C项。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中“Earlier, India had ordered the removal of all speed breakers from highways, which are considered to be a safety hazard for high-speed vehicles. (早些时候,印度已下令拆除高速公路上的所有减速带,这被认为是对高速车辆的安全hazard)”可知,高速公路上的所有减速带下令被拆除,说明它们被认为对高速车辆存在威胁,划线词意为“Threat (威胁)”。故选B项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“The use of optical illusions as speed breakers was first pioneered in the American city of Philadelphia in 2008, as part of a campaign against speeding motorists. (2008年,作为反对超速驾驶者运动的一部分,美国费城首次率先使用视错觉作为减速带)”,第三段中“In Ahmedabad for instance, a mother and her daughter, both artists, have painted 3D crosswalks in the first few months of 2016. The artists say their motto is “to increase the attention of drivers”, and that the concept (理念) has been successfully tested in accident-prone zones (事故多发区) on a highway. (例如,在艾哈迈达巴德,一位母亲和她的女儿都是艺术家,在2016年的前几个月绘制了3D人行横道。艺术家们表示,他们的座右铭是“增加驾驶员的注意力”,这一概念已在高速公路事故多发区成功测试)”和第四段中“However, critics argue that once drivers know that these speed breakers are visual illusions, they may ignore them. Others also point out that India’s decision does not consider the safety of a large number of pedestrians. (然而,批评人士认为,一旦司机知道这些减速带是视觉错觉,他们可能会忽视它们。其他人也指出,印度的决定没有考虑到大量行人的安全)”可知,视觉错觉作为减速带有的地区认同,有的地区不认同,可得出人们对使用视错觉作为减速带有不同的看法。故选A项。
根据最后一段中“In the end, the new policy may be just one step towards improving road safety.(最后,这个新的政策可能只是提高道路安全的第一步)”可知,作者没有对该政策做出任何评价,由此推测,作者对3D斑马线持客观态度。故选C项。
C 13. B 14. B 15. D
由第二段“There’s no shortage of advice for people in hotter-than-normal regions. They can wear a sun hat or stay in the shade (阴凉处). And when all else fails, go inside and turn the air conditioning on. (对于那些生活在比正常温度更高地区的人们来说,这里不乏建议。他们可以戴遮阳帽,也可以呆在阴凉处。当其他一切都失败时,进去打开空调)”讲人类应对高温有多种方法和第三段中“Many people assume that wild species must have some ways of dealing with these unusually high temperatures. However, most of them can’t. (许多人认为野生物种一定有办法应对这些异常高温。然而,它们中的大多数物种没有办法应对异常高温)”可知,野生物种在应对不断上升的高温方面与人类的不同之处在于它们适应高温的方法有限。故选C项。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。由第四段中“In short, they do nothing but breathe in the shade. This behavior is usually successful because it enables most birds to survive most of the very hot days. But it wrecks their schedule. Many birds no longer have enough time in their days to find enough food to remain healthy, especially the extra food needed to raise their young.
由第五段中“It’s not only birds that are suffering from heat, nor is it only land species: animals in the ocean are also suffering. The largest analysis (分析) of coral reef (珊瑚礁) health found that 14% of the world’s coral reefs had been lost in the previous decade due to heat. (受高温影响的不仅仅是鸟类,也不仅仅是陆地物种:海洋中的动物也受到了影响。对珊瑚礁健康的最大分析发现,在过去十年中,世界上14%的珊瑚礁因高温而消失)”推知,作者提到热浪对珊瑚礁的影响,是为了表明全球变暖热浪来袭对整个野生动物群落带来的巨大影响。故选B项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。由最后一段“Heat is damaging ecosystems everywhere, and we’re just in the early stages of climate breakdown. Humans are highly adaptable. The vast majority of wild species, however, can’t simply pack up and go someplace else. By continuing to pollute the atmosphere, we’re damaging their worlds and pushing ever-greater numbers of them into extinction. (高温正在破坏各地的生态系统,而我们正处于气候崩溃的早期阶段。人类的适应性很强。然而,绝大多数野生物种不能简单地收拾行李去其他地方。通过继续污染大气,我们正在破坏它们的世界,并将越来越多的人推向灭绝)”可知,热浪危及整个生态系统,人类能适应但野生动物无法逃脱,人类活动加剧了动物灭绝的风险,所以需立即采取措施保护生态系统。故选D项。

【19题详解】
上文“Most people don’t know this, but some science museums have summer camp programs for kids of all ages.(大多数人不知道这一点,但一些科学博物馆有针对所有年龄段孩子的夏令营项目)”说明科学博物馆给各种年龄段的孩子提供夏令营。空处承上启下,F项中的one指代前文中的“summer camp programs”中的一个,而“benefits”和下文中的“can not only gain some useful life skills but also make new friends there”相呼应,说明去博物馆组织的夏令营能够获得很多的好处。
下文“It’s very likely that you will engage in some interactive program sand exhibitions when you visit a science museum. Exhibition halls like planetariums (天文馆) show explorers the wonders of the universe. Some other halls also encourage visitors to actively participate in the exploration of scientific concepts (概念)and phenomena by allowing them to touch, handle, and experiment with various objects and exhibits according to the proper procedure.(当你参观科学博物馆时,你很可能会参加一些互动节目和沙展。

Then came the last award, and to my surprise, my name was announced.

Then came the last award, and to my surprise, my name was announced. Confused and excited, I walked up to the winner’s platform and was awarded a medal. As the crowd cheered and clapped loudly, I felt warmth in my heart. After the ceremony, I learned from my friend Jim that there were only two runners weighing over 200 pounds. Although I only beat one person, Jim praised me for my determination, courage, and kindness. Honestly, I was proud of myself. This race increased my love for running and my confidence in myself.
