Growing up on a mountain farm in Tyrol, Fritz enjoyed watching how cows and horses interacted with each other more freely, once they’d been led out of the barn and into pasture. It was what he observed in his boyhood that took root in his pursuit of becoming a biologist. After he finished his study at university. Fritz landed work at Austria’s Konrad Lorenz Research Center, raising raven chicks by hand and teaching graylag geese how to open boxes as he pursued his PhD. Working this closely with free-living animals was exactly what he’d dreamed of as a boy.
In 1997, a zoo gave the research center its first northern bald ibis chicks (隐鹮) Nowhere near as teachable as geese—and not even close to super intelligent ravens—the ibises frustrated most of the scientists. But Fritz was fascinated. He devoted himself to taking care of them. After the ibises were first released back into the wild more than 20 years ago, Fritz learned that spending generations in zoo hadn’t reduced their drive to migrate (迁徙), though it did leave them geographically uninformed. In their search for “south”, some ended up in Russia. What the ibises needed, Fritz thought, was a guide.
Fritz decided he would teach the birds a new, safer migration route by guiding them himself in a tiny aircraft. And he was confident he could succeed in this daring, unconventional plan—because he had done it before. “Around that time, the movie ‘Fly Away Home’ was a huge hit with us biologists,” Fritz says. When he announced that he’d do the same with the ibises, he was initially laughed at. But Fritz didn’t give up. He modified an ultralight aircraft so it would travel at speeds slow enough for his winged students to keep up. He had been his young pupils’ only provider of food, love and hugs since they were just a few days old, and the ibises eagerly followed their teacher, who just happened to pilot a fairly noisy machine.
In 2004, three years after some initially bumpy (颠簸的) experiments, Fritz led the first batch of birds from Austria to Italy, and has since led 15 such migrations. Over that time, he has rewilded 277 young ibises, many of which then started to pass the route on to their own young.
4. What determined Fritz’s career choice
A. Fritz’s childhood observation. B. Fritz’s passion for biology.
C. Fritz’s growth environment. D. Fritz’s interaction with animals.
5. What disappointed the scientists about ibis chicks
A. They are easy to get lost in the migration.
B. They are lacking in the desire to migrate.
C. They are accustomed to the life in the zoo.
D. They are strikingly far from easy to teach.
6. Why did Fritz decide to teach the ibises a new migration route
A. The ibises were too awkward to find a new migration route.
B. The ibises needed a guide for lack of geographical knowledge.
C. Fritz wanted to prove that he could succeed in a daring plan.
D. Fritz wanted to recreate a touching scene of a popular movie.
7. What is Fritz like according to the passage
A. sensitive but courageous. B. innovative but demanding.
C. persistent and insightful. D. enthusiastic and cooperative.
A 5. D 6. B 7. C

根据第二段中“In 1997, a zoo gave the research center its first northern bald ibis chicks(隐鹮) Nowhere near as teachable as geese—and not even close to super intelligent ravens—the ibises frustrated most of the scientists. (1997年,一家动物园给了研究中心第一批北方秃头朱鹮幼鸟,它们远不如鹅那么容易教,甚至远不如超级聪明的乌鸦——朱鹮让大多数科学家感到沮丧。)”可知,朱鹭幼鸟非常不容易教,这让科学家感到失望。故选D项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“After the ibises were first released back into the wild more than 20 years ago, Fritz learned that spending generations in zoo hadn’t reduced their drive to migrate(迁徙), though it did leave them geographically uninformed. In their search for ‘south’, some ended up in Russia. What the ibises needed, Fritz thought, was a guide. (20多年前,朱鹭第一次被放生到野外后,Fritz了解到,在动物园里生活几代并没有减少它们迁徙的动力,尽管这确实让它们对地理环境一无所知。在寻找‘南方’的过程中,一些人来到了俄罗斯。Fritz认为,朱鹭需要的是一个向导。)”可知,朱鹭缺乏地理知识,需要一个向导,所以Fritz决定教朱鹭一种新的迁徙路线。故选B项。

Sending a thumbs-up can be seen as passive aggressive(冒犯的), according to Gen Z (those born between 1995 and 2009) who say they feel attacked whenever it is used. Whether the chat is informal, between friends or at work the symbol appears to have a very different, ‘rude’ meaning for the younger generation.
A 24-year-old on Reddit summed up the Gen Z argument, saying it is best ‘never used in any situation’ as it is ‘hurtful’. “No one of my age in the office does it, but the Gen X (those born between 1966 and 1980) people always do it. Take me a bit to adjust and get it out of my head that it means they’re mad-at me,” he added. Other young people agreed it is bad form, especially at work where it can make the team appear unfriendly and not easygoing.
“My last workplace had a WhatsApp chat for our team to send information to each other on, and most of the people on there just replied with a thumbs up. I don’t know why but it seemed a little bit hostile to me,” one woman said. One Reddit user also said the thumbs up actually means that “I’ve read your message and have nothing to add and I hope and pray...all the people in this group chat have nothing to say on it too.”
Older workers appear confused by the reaction, saying they use the thumbs up in work-related chats to show “I agree” or “I understood and will follow.”
Part of the issue is that young people tend to use the thumbs-up in jokes. Barry Kennedy, 24, he said he only used it to communicate with older people like his parents or older colleagues. A survey of 2, 000 people conducted by Perspectus Global showed that a majority of people between the ages of 16 and 29 believe that you are “officially old” if you use thumbs-up or heart emoji.
8. Which of the following point is not the Gen Z’s understanding of the emoji thumbs-up
A. Being rude. B. Being agreeable.
C. Being hurtful. D. Being unfriendly.
9. What does the underlined word “hostile” mean in paragraph 3
A. Unfriendly and aggressive. B. Tough and difficult.
C. Unwanted and unacceptable. D. Strange and unusual.
10. Why can’t older workers understand the young’s reaction to the thumbs-up emoji
A. Because of their poor communications kill.
B. Because of their being old with worse memory.
C. Because of their less communicating with the young.
D. Because of their different understanding of the emoji.
11. Which is the most suitable title for the text
A The Thumbs-up Emoji: Rejected by the younger generation
B. The Thumbs-up Emoji: Highly Welcomed by Old People
C. The Thumbs-up Emoji: A Sign of Generation Gap
D. The Thumbs-up Emoji: A Sign of Being Aggressive
B 9. A 10. D 11. C
由文章第一段“Sending a thumbs-up can be seen as passive aggressive(冒犯的), according to Gen Z (those born between 1995 and 2009) who say they feel attacked whenever it is used. Whether the chat is informal, between friends or at work the symbol appears to have a very different, ‘rude’ meaning for the younger generation.(Z世代(1995年至2009年出生的人)表示,竖起大拇指可以被视为被动攻击,他们表示,每当使用大拇指时,他们都会感到受到攻击。无论是非正式的聊天、朋友之间的聊天还是在工作中的聊天,这个符号对年轻一代来说都有着截然不同的‘粗鲁’含义。)”、第二段“A 24-year-old on Reddit summed up the Gen Z argument, saying it is best ‘never used in any situation’ as it is ‘hurtful’. (Reddit上一位24岁的年轻人总结了Z世代的论点,称它最好‘在任何情况下都不要使用’,因为它‘伤人’。)”以及第二段“Other young people agreed it is bad form, especially at work where it can make the team appear unfriendly and not easygoing.(其他年轻人也认为这是一种糟糕的状态,尤其是在工作中,这会让团队显得不友好和不随和。)”
由第二段“Other young people agreed it is bad form, especially at work where it can make the team appear unfriendly and not easygoing.(其他年轻人也认为这是一种糟糕的状态,尤其是在工作中,这会让团队显得不友好和不随和。)”以及第三段“My last workplace had a WhatsApp chat for our team to send information to each other on, and most of the people on there just replied with a thumbs up. I don’t know why but it seemed a little bit hostile to me(我上一个工作场所有一个WhatsApp聊天,我们的团队可以在上面互相发送信息,那里的大多数人只是竖起大拇指回复。我不知道为什么,但这似乎对我有点 )”可知,hostile应代指前面“unfriendly and not easygoing”,表示“有敌意的”。故选A项。
由文章第四段“Older workers appear confused by the reaction, saying they use the thumbs up in work-related chats to show‘I agree’ or ‘I understood and will follow.’(年长的员工似乎对这种反应感到困惑,他们说他们在与工作相关的聊天中竖起大拇指表示‘我同意’或‘我理解并会遵守’)”可知,老一辈对竖大拇指的理解和年轻人不一样,所以导致他们无法理解年轻人的反应。
由文章最后一段“Part of the issue is that young people tend to use the thumbs-up in jokes. Barry Kennedy, 24, he said he only used it to communicate with older people like his parents or older colleagues. A survey of 2, 000 people conducted by Perspectus Global showed that a majority of people between the ages of 16 and 29 believe that you are ‘officially old’ if you use thumbs-up or heart emoji.(问题的一部分在于,年轻人在开玩笑时往往会竖起大拇指。24岁的巴里·肯尼迪(Barry Kennedy)说,他只用它与父母或年长同事等老年人交流。Perspectus Global对2000人进行的一项调查显示,大多数年龄在16岁至29岁之间的人认为,如果你使用拇指向上或心形表情符号,你就‘正式变老了’。)”以及上文可知,文章主要讲年轻人和老一代对竖大拇指表情符号不同的理解。而C项The Thumbs-up Emoji: A Sign of Generation Gap(竖起大拇指的表情符号:代沟的标志),符合文意。故选C项。
D
Robots have learned to drive on Mars, carry out brain surgery and defeat grandmaster chess players. But when it comes to baking, making tasty desserts is far from a piece of cake. But after multiple failed attempts, US researchers have successfully 3D printed a cherry cheesecake.
The sorry-looking flan resembles a slice of cottage pie, topped with blancmange. Nevertheless, scientists are hopeful that once mastered, 3D printing could replace conventional cooking, allowing food to be tailored to nutritional needs of children, athletes or those on dietary restrictions.
“We have an enormous problem with the low-nutrient value of processed foods,” said Professor Christen Cooper of Pace University Nutrition and Dietetics. “3D food printing will still turn out processed foods, but perhaps the silver lining will be, for some people, better control and tailoring of personalised nutrition. It may also be useful in making food more appealing to those with swallowing disorders by mimicking the shapes of real foods with the mashed texture foods that these patients require.”
In the latest experiment, researchers tried various cheesecake designs, consisting of seven key ingredients: a biscuit base, peanut butter, Nutella, banana puree, strawberry jam, cherry drizzle, and frosting. In early attempts, which involved simply layering up the ingredients, the team found that the cake quickly disintegrated, with jam and peanut butter leaking out onto the work bench.
They discovered through trial and error that a more architectural solution was needed. Walls of biscuit base were required throughout the cake to hold the softer ingredients inside, while internal triangular biscuit supports were necessary to keep the cake upright.
“The study highlights that printed food dishes will likely require novel ingredient compositions and structures, due to the different way by which the food is assembled,” said Cooper. “Much work is still needed to collect data, model, and optimize these processes.”
But the team said that laser cooking and 3D printing could allow chefs to create entirely new food experiences, with flavors and textures placed with millimetre precision. And, because the system uses targeted light for very localized cooking, it could save energy unlike ovens or hobs which heat a large area.
12. Why are robots mentioned in the first paragraph
A. To compare to find the advantages of robots. B. To show how to use robots to make cakes.
C. To introduce the topic of 3D printed food. D. To prove 3D printers are better than robots.
13. What do we know about the 3D-printed cherry cheesecake
A. It is designed to replace all processed foods. B. It may help some people with special needs.
C. It looks more attractive than ordinary ones. D. It is appealing to children having sweet teeth.
14. What does Cooper mean in the sixth paragraph
A. Present 3D printed food are not perfect now. B. 3D printing technology needs improving.
C. Printed food dishes will be forbidden. D. Swallowing disorders will disappear.
15. What is the main idea of the passage
A. It’s time to save energy using 3D printers.
B. Without 3D printer the world would be less colorful.
C. 3D printed food will make chefs out of work in future.
D. 3D-printed cheesecakes predict ‘personalized nutrition’.
C 13. B 14. B 15. D

第一段中“Robots have learned to drive on Mars, carry out brain surgery and defeat grandmaster chess players. (机器人已经学会了在火星上开车、进行脑部手术和击败国际象棋大师。)”先指出机器人在各个领域取得的成绩,然后“But when it comes to baking, making tasty desserts is fa r from a piece of cake. But after multiple failed attempts, US researchers have successfully 3D printed a cherry cheesecake. (但说到烘焙,做出美味的甜点远不是一块蛋糕那么简单。但在多次尝试失败后,美国研究人员终于成功3D打印出了一个樱桃芝士蛋糕。)”通过对比,引出3D打印取得的进展。所以第一段提到了机器人是为了引出3D打印食品的话题。故选C项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Nevertheless, scientists are hopeful that once mastered, 3D printing could replace conventional cooking, allowing food to be tailored to nutritional needs of children, athletes or those on dietary restrictions. (尽管如此,科学家们还是希望,一旦掌握了3D打印技术,它就可以取代传统的烹饪方法,使食物能够根据儿童、运动员或饮食限制者的营养需求进行定制。)”可知,这个3D打印的樱桃芝士蛋糕可能会帮助一些对营养有特殊需要的人。故选B项。

【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第二段中“Nevertheless, scientists are hopeful that once mastered, 3D printing could replace conventional cooking, allowing food to be tailored to nutritional needs of children, athletes or those on dietary restrictions. (尽管如此,科学家们还是希望,一旦掌握了3D打印技术,它就可以取代传统的烹饪方法,使食物能够根据儿童、运动员或饮食限制者的营养需求进行定制。)”和第三段中“3D food printing will still turn out processed foods, but perhaps the silver lining will be, for some people, better control and tailoring of personalised nutrition. It may also be useful in making food more appealing to those with swallowing disorders by mimicking the shapes of real foods with the mashed texture foods that these patients require.

My five-year-old daughter Ruthie seemed very small standing at the base of the huge rock-climbing wall as a young employee double-checked her equipment. It was our second time at this indoor crowded climbing gym. On our first visit, Ruthie had begged my husband and me to let her try climbing the wall, but I denied her, afraid that she was undersized.
But life had dramatically changed since then. After receiving a cancer diagnosis (诊断), I felt that my life was too short to deny her a chance. I stood outside the waiting area, watching the employee attach Ruthie to a safety rope. Then he gave her a thumbs-up sign, and my daughter began climbing!
With that rope, she couldn’t possibly fall. She might slip, but she wouldn’t fall. I was surprised at how she did that so easily and joyfully. “If my cancer is the rock wall, I want to be Ruthie,” I thought.
When she touched the ground again, I leaned over the low fence and asked, “How do you do that ”
“I just trust the rope. It’s very easy,” she said with a shrug, and started on her second climbing.
Apparently, if I had known the secret, I could have climbed the wall myself. When I was sixteen, I once failed to climb a rock wall. With added weight and reduced muscle tone, I doubted if I could even do it. I didn’t see any other moms trying to climb the wall. Several months earlier, embarrassment would have stopped me from trying. But my cancer did funny things to my brain. It made me realize that I needed to be braver than I thought.
With determination, I decided to try it and the same young employee checked my safety rope and gave me the thumbs-up sign. As I began my climb, I was excited by my own bravery for trying something so new. However, only ten feet up, my fingers and toes started to tire, and there was absolutely no place to rest. My excitement began to disappear and I was afraid that I was going to slip and fall.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
But I knew if I wanted to make it, I had to trust the rope.

That day’s successful experience inspired me in my cancer battle.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
But I knew if I wanted to make it, I had to trust the rope. I took a deep breath. Immediately, I felt the safety from the rope. I realized that even though slipping might make me nervous, I would be perfectly safe. With newfound trust in the rope, I started climbing again. As I continued, my rope caught me many times. And I also reminded myself to be brave. Five minutes later, I was at the top of the wall. I made it!
That day’s successful experience inspired me in my cancer battle. During the medical treatment, I kept telling myself the secret of doing something hard and scary: just trust the rope. My family, my friends, even my doctors could all be the rope that I could rely on all the time. They tried their best to help and support me, just like the rope that had lifted me up that day at the indoor climbing gym. Their love, care and company gave me the courage and confidence in the battle against my cancer.

A. The Thumbs-up Emoji: Rejected by the younger generation
B. The Thumbs-up Emoji: Highly Welcomed by Old People
C. The Thumbs-up Emoji: A Sign of Generation Gap
D. The Thumbs-up Emoji: A Sign of Being Aggressive

But the team said that laser cooking and 3D printing could allow chefs to create entirely new food experiences with flavors and textures placed with millimetre precision. And, because the system uses targeted light for very localized cooking, it could save energy unlike ovens or hobs which heat a large area.
12. Why are robots mentioned in the first paragraph
A To compare to find the advantages of robots.

After receiving a cancer diagnosis (诊断) I felt that my life was too short to deny her a chance.
