UNIT 5 MUSIC

A
Every music therapist has a wealth of stories about that beautiful musical moment when art and science come together to create an awareness,an accomplishment,a breakthrough.I want to share highlights of music therapy, which helped my family find outlets and insights through our “extremely painful journey”.

My father,Joe Altman lived his life with strength and determination. As complications associated with diabetes diminished his physical capabilities, his unbeatable will to fight the disease completely hammered away.A WWⅡ Navy Seal,Joe Altman lived by a simple rule:when you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot(结) and hang on.
When dementia struck hard and violently broke through Dad’s spirit, music therapist Alessandro Ricciarelli entered his life.Armed with six strings attached to a wooden guitar,Alessandro surpassed(超过) the capabilities of the most advanced medical technology.

Each time Alessandro walked through the door,an invisible wall formed around them, creating a comfortable space in which a trusting bond of friendship would quickly form.Alessandro brought with him happiness, encouragement, added a sense of meaning and purpose to Dad’s life, and,in doing so revived(使复原) his spirit. In a most gentle way,Alessandro treated Joe with the greatest dignity and respect.

Alessandro’s action was not limited to actual hospital visits;he took personal time to learn songs that were relevant to Dad and made recordings of their sessions together to be enjoyed at any given time.Alessandro appreciated the power of positive thoughts, and with his kind words,a smile, compassion, and a true desire to make Dad happy,he encouraged Dad’s participation, leaving us with cherished memories of my father having one last chance to express himself through music, smiling and enjoying life.

In a very real sense,Alessandro was that knot at the end of the rope on to which Dad grabbed.I am forever grateful to the Music Therapy Programme at NYU Medical Centre, more specifically,to Mr.Alessandro Ricciarelli.

1.What does the underlined word “diminished” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Improved. B.Replaced.
C.Weakened. D.Developed.

根据该词前面的“As complications associated with diabetes”以及后面内容“his unbeatable will to fight the disease completely hammered away”可知,与糖尿病相关的并发症“削弱”了作者父亲的身体能力,所以该单词的意思应是“削弱”。

A.He used to serve in the army.
B.He lived a very easy life.
C.He was a superman in physical strength.
D.He was good at music when young.

3.What kind of person does the author consider Alessandro to be
A.Courageous.
B.Strong-willed.

B
A broken heart.A sad ending to a love affair. That’s something most of us have experienced,or probably will. The experience can be destructive. You might find yourself listening more to sad music, hoping it can resonate with your feelings of disappointment, and you’ll never heal from your broken heart.
You might go through a strong feeling of sorrow,as in Neil Young’s Only Love Can Break Your Heart,or the pain of a lyric from Bob Dylan’s Love Sick: “I’m sick of love.I wish.I’d never met you.”

But research shows listening to sad music can help you begin to feel joy and hopefulness about your life again.Sad music can help heal and uplift you from your broken heart.Or,from any negative, disappointing life situation. It can activate empathy(共情) and the desire to reach out for others—both pathways out of the prison of heartache and hopelessness.
A recent study from Germany found the emotional impact of listening to sad music can lift the feelings of empathy, compassion, and a desire for positive connection with others. That, itself,is psychologically healing. It draws you away from anxiety with yourself, and possibly towards helping others in need of comfort.

Another experiment, from the University of Kent, found that when people were experiencing sadness, listening to music that was “beautiful but sad” excited their mood.In fact,it did so when the person first consciously understood the situation causing their sadness before beginning to listen to the sad music. That is,when they intended that the sad music might help, they found that it did.But that wasn’t true if they just listened to sad music without first thinking about the sad situation.
Then, you may be answering the question raised in the old Bee Gees’ song, How Can You Mend a Broken Heart

5.What does the underlined word “resonate” in paragraph 1 refer to
A.Communicate.
B.Cooperate.
C.Contrast.
D.Correspond.

6.Why are the songs of Neil Young and Bob Dylan mentioned
A.To present the sad feelings from their songs.
B.To celebrate their achievements in the music field.
C.To compare the difference between their music.
D.To convince others of the healing effects of music.

7.What can we learn from the experiment from University of Kent
A.Shared feelings might enable people to help others.
B.Sad music can strengthen relationships between people.
C.Showing empathy does good both mentally and physically.
D.Sad songs can benefit people with the intention of lifting spirits.

根据第五段中“Another experiment, from the University of Kent, found that when people were experiencing sadness, listening to music that was ‘beautiful but sad’ excited their mood.”

8.Which is a suitable title for the text
A.What does music bring to us
B.How can sad music heal a broken heart
C.Why is sad music so popular
D.When can we turn to others for help

根据全文内容,结合第三段中“But research shows listening to sad music can help you begin to feel joy and hopefulness about your life again. Sad music can help heal and uplift you from your broken heart.”

Ⅱ.七选五
My heart went out to the drama teacher I read about in a recent news item. Each parent from her class insisted that she cast their own child as Snow White. This reminded me of my seventh grade musical—The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.I desperately wanted to play the role of Becky, the female lead who was Tom’s girlfriend. 1
For starters,Becky had to sing numerous solos, and I couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket.I also didn’t have long blonde curls like pretty Linda Wright who won the part.

I was assigned the non-singing role of Miss Watson, the maid.I had to wear an ugly dress. And I had only one line to learn,“That’s what I say.” 2 Miss Watson was onstage in quite a few scenes, and got to repeat “That’s what I say” throughout the play.
At last, our production was put onstage.Imagine my surprise when Miss Watson made the audience laugh out loud each time I piped in with “That’s what I say”.I hadn’t known that she—or I—could be funny,or that her character was important in moving the plot along. 3

That night,I began to understand that being the star may not be any more fun than being a stand-out in a supporting role. Each person, onstage and backstage,is essential in theater.Without everyone doing their part, the play would be dull as dirt. 4 If everyone’s a star then nothing gets done. It’s all noise and chaos.
And so I believe all children should get the opportunity to play Miss Watson,to become someone they didn’t know they wanted to be. 5

A.So it is in life.
B.It was not to be.
C.It was anything but a great part.
D.My Miss Watson turned out to be a hit.
E.It took the entire cast to make a good show.
F.There was an advantage,in my opinion,though.
G.I would hope all children could be a hit in life.

1.B 根据空前的“I desperately wanted to play the role of Becky, the female lead who was Tom’s girlfriend.” 由设空处上下文内容可知,此处应是一个承上启下的句子,所以B项“It was not to be.”

2.F 根据空后的“Miss Watson was onstage in quite a few scenes, and got to repeat ‘That’s what I say’ throughout the play.” 所以F项“There was an advantage,in my opinion, though.”
3.D 根据空前的“Imagine my surprise when Miss Watson...her character was important in moving the plot along.” 所以D项“My Miss Watson turned out to be a hit.”

4.A 由空前的“Each person, onstage and backstage,is essential in theater. Without everyone doing their part, the play would be dull as dirt.” 而根据空后的“If everyone’s a star then nothing gets done. It’s all noise and chaos.”
再由空前的“And so I believe all children should get the opportunity to play Miss Watson,to become someone they didn’t know they wanted to be.”

To much of the world, bullfighting has always been distinctly Iberian. But these days, parts of France are laying claim to this tradition. From the Cte Basque to the arenas of Arles and Beziers,it has spread to towns where bullfighting has long been banned, and been embraced with such enthusiasm that you’d think the sport had been born there.
The rising passion for blood and sand has been resisted by animal-rights activists.Last month someone set off a bomb near the bullring in Carcassonne. Yet France’s enthusiasts fiercely defend their right to these moral rituals. Bullfighting, they insist,is part of the heritage,an expression of a shared regional culture that should be protected.

The rest of the Continent should take note. The paradox(自相矛盾) of an ever-more-united Europe is that as borders between member states become less important,so do the nations themselves—and regional identities are valued. It’s easy to forget that most European nation-states were created as we know them only during the 19th century, after a long series of bloody conflicts.“If the chances of war had been a little different, all the regions sharing bullfighting might have been together,” argues Jean Michel Mariou,a huge fan of bullfighting.“On both sides of the Pyrenees there are Basques, there are Catalans, there are common cultures,”he says.“Bullfighting is only one expression of it.”

Bullfighting isn’t the only cultural tradition that has begun to go beyond borders,of course. To name but one other:the Celtic revival, built largely around musical groups along the coast of Ireland,Scotland and Cornwall,Brittany and Normandy. But while bagpipes(风笛) may stir the blood, they don’t spill it.And the violence of bullfighting horrifies many people who don’t feel they share in its culture.

“The concept of lasting local tradition doesn’t mean anything anymore,” says Josyane Wuerelle, coordinator of the Federation de Liasions Anti-Corrida in Agde.Bullfighting is about attracting tourists, not honoring local history, she argues.Robert Marge doesn’t see it that way,of course. He recently declined an invitation to organize a bullfighting in Paris’s enormous Stade de France.“We didn’t want to sell our souls by bringing bullfighting to a region where it doesn’t exist,” he explains. But he has also got the sense to know that some traditions don’t travel well.

4.What can we learn about bullfighting from the first two paragraphs
A.It is legal in France.
B.It will boom tourism in France.
C.It has become popular in France.
D.It is part of the heritage of France.

5.What can we infer according to Jean Michel Mariou
A.Shared cultures could bring people together.
B.The continent of Europe is more united than ever.
C.Bullfighting is a popular culture in many regions.
D.Regions sharing bullfighting were separated by wars.

6.Why did Robert Marge refuse to organize a bullfight in Paris
A.It ignores animal rights.
B.It honors local tradition.
C.It is intended for money.

As the late afternoon sun beat down on his farm in Missouri last May, Brandon finished feeding his cows and decided to go home.As they often did, his two sons,Louie,7,and Everett,5,followed closely.

As they headed for the house, the two boys ran ahead of their father, who stopped to close the gate.Louie paused at a board covering an old well. The board had, over time, become easily broken. When Louie stepped on it,it caved in and he fell into the well.Brandon had just closed the door when he heard a cry for help.He turned around and found his younger son Everett standing alone beside the well, pointing to it and screaming.

Brandon quickly realized what had happened.“No,Louie can barely swim,” he panicked, his mind almost going blank. However,he knew he should calm down.He ran to the well and heard Louie hitting the water.Without thinking,he jumped in.Somehow,Brandon managed to grab on to a pipe that ran down the side of the well.He hit the cold water at the bottom of the well and lifted Louie up as he stuck his own legs and back against the narrow walls for support.“All right,Dad,we can climb out now,” Louie said.
If only it were that easy!

The pipe that he’d grabbed during his fall was too slippery to be of any use. There was only one way out.Looking up to see Everett looking down at them,Brandon shouted,“Everett, you’re going to have to be a big boy and save us.Run to the road and stand by the mailbox until someone stops.Tell them we need help. And Everett, stay off the road.”

The couple hurried to the well with Everett.“Brandon,” Dan shouted.“It’s Dan.We’re going to send a rope down to you.” After several minutes they pulled Louie out of the well. The couple now turned their attention to Brandon, but he was too heavy to pull out of the well using just the rope. After a brief discussion, they decided to use the old windmill that still stood over the well. Forty-some minutes after he’d jumped into the well to save his son,Brandon emerged, cold and wet.“You are our life saver,” Brandon thanked Dan,who turned to Everett.Dan said,“Everett is actually your life saver.Without him,I wouldn’t have known the accident, let alone the rescue!” Words couldn’t express his surprise when the father turned to the 5-year-old boy. Finally they thanked Dan again together.(共32张PPT)
UNIT 3 THE INTERNET

A
When the designer and typographer(排印工) Marcin Wichary chanced upon a tiny museum just outside Barcelona five years ago,the experience tipped his interest in the history of technology into an obsession(痴迷) with a very particular part of it:the keyboard.
“I have never seen so many typewriters under one roof. Not even close,” he shared on the Internet at the time.“At this point,I literally have tears in my eyes.I’m not kidding. This feels like a miracle.”

He’d had a discovery while wandering through the exhibit:Each key on a keyboard has its own stories. And these stories are not just about computing technology, but also about the people who designed, used,or otherwise interacted with the keyboards.
Take the backspace key for example,he explains,“I like that the concept of backspace was originally just that—a space going backward. We are used to it erasing now,but for a hundred years, erasing was its own incredibly complex effort. You needed to master a Comet eraser,or Wite-Out,or strange correction tapes, and possibly all of the above...or give up and start from scratch whenever you made a small mistake in typing.”

The deeper he researched, the more obsessive he became.Amazed that no comprehensive books existed on the history of keyboards,he decided to create his own. When not working at his day job as the design leader for the design software company Figma,he began producing Shift Happens,a two-volume, 1,216-page hardcover book—and raised over $750,000 for the project on Kickstarter in March of 2023.Wichary was only a bit surprised by the support and the keyboard’s wide appeal. As he points out,“It’s such a crucial device that occupies a lot of our waking life.”

1.After the museum experience,Wichary’s interest in technology .
A.took off
B.died out
C.grew stronger
D.became more concrete

2.What did Wichary discover while admiring the keyboards
A.The stories behind them.
B.The wisdom of humans.
C.The secret of the keyboards.
D.The history of technology.

由第三段中“He’d had a discovery while wandering through the exhibit:Each key on a keyboard has its own stories.” 故选A项。

3.What does Wichary want to tell us about the backspace key in paragraph 4
A.It is a simple but powerful key.
B.It can be used to move back one space.
C.It is the result of long-term improvement.
D.It allows people to make mistakes when typing.

由第四段中“We are used to it erasing now,but for a hundred years, erasing was its own incredibly complex effort. You needed to master a Comet eraser,or Wite-Out,or strange correction tapes, and possibly all of the above...or give up and start from scratch whenever you made a small mistake in typing.”

4.Why did Wichary write his own book
A.To fill a gap.
B.To get famous.
C.To make money.
D.To record history.

由最后一段中“Amazed that no comprehensive books existed on the history of keyboards,he decided to create his own.” 故选A项。

B
Many studies have shown that when people read on-screen,they don’t understand what they’ve read as well as when they read in print. For example, researchers in Spain and Israel took a close look at 54 studies comparing digital and print reading.Their 2018 study involved more than 171,000 prehension, they found, was better overall when people read print rather than digital texts.
Maryanne Wolf, who works at the University of California,Los Angeles explained that reading is not natural. We learn to talk by listening to those around us.It’s pretty automatic. But learning to read takes real work because the brain has no special network of cells just for reading.

To understand text, the brain borrows networks that evolved(进化) to do other things. For example, the part that evolved to recognize faces is called into action to recognize letters. This is similar to how you might adapt a tool for some new use.For example,a coat hanger is great for putting your clothes in the closet(衣柜).But if a blueberry rolls under the refrigerator, you might straighten out the coat hanger and use it to reach under the refrigerator and pull out the fruit. As a result, the brain might slip into skim(浏览) mode when you’re reading on a screen. It may switch to deep-reading mode when you turn to print.

Your reading doesn’t just depend on the device, however. It also depends on what you assume about the text.Baron, who is a scientist studying language and reading, calls this mindset. She says one way mindset works is in anticipating how easy or hard we expect the reading to be.If we think it will be easy,we might not put in much effort.Much of what we read on-screen tends to be text messages and social media posts. They’re usually easy to understand. So, when people read on-screen,they read faster. When reading fast,we may not absorb all the ideas as well.
So if you really need to learn something, you’re probably better off with print.

5.What is Maryanne Wolf’s point of view
A.Reading is unnatural for the brain.
B.Digital texts are easier to understand.
C.Old tools should be adapted for new use.
D.There are two different modes of reading.

根据文章第二段中“Maryanne Wolf, who works at the University of California,Los Angeles explained that reading is not natural.”

6.How was Maryanne Wolf’s point of view explained
A.By referring to the results of previous studies.
B.By sorting data collected through experiments.
C.By analyzing examples of people’s reading experiences.
D.By comparing reading to doing things with borrowed tools.

根据文章第三段中“To understand text, the brain borrows networks that evolved to do other things. For example, the part that evolved to recognize faces is called into action to recognize letters. This is similar to how you might adapt a tool for some new use.”

7.What will Baron probably agree with
A.An effective reader absorbs all the ideas.
B.Digital reading devices can be put into better use.
C.Reading strategies should be applied to improve reading speed.
D.We have different mindsets in screen reading and print reading.

根据文章第四段中“Baron, who is a scientist studying language and reading,...So,when people read on-screen,they read faster.”

8.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.What’s behind how you read, device or psychology
B.Are social media posts fueling up a fast reading craze
C.Will you learn better from reading on-screen or on paper
D.Which employs more parts of your brain, reading or listening

通读全文,结合文章第一段中“Comprehension, they found, was better overall when people read print rather than digital texts.”和最后一段“So if you really need to learn something, you’re probably better off with print.”

Ⅱ.七选五
In this day and age,it is difficult to imagine our lives without emails. But how often do we consider the environmental impact of these messages 1 It’s easy to ignore the invisible energy involved in running the network—particularly when it comes to sending and storing data.
Every single email is stored on a server(服务器). 2 These computers consume massive amounts of energy,24 hours a day,and require countless water or air conditioning systems for cooling. The more messages we send, receive and store, the more servers are needed. 3

According to carbon footprint specialists, every spam email(垃圾邮件) releases an estimated 0.3 grams of CO2 into the atmosphere.A standard email, one without an attachment has a carbon footprint of 4 grams of CO2. 4 These carbon emissions come from the energy used to operate the computers and access the Internet.
Recent calculations indicate if every email user sent one less unnecessary email each day,it would reduce CO2 emissions by 16,433 tonnes each year. That is the same as 81,152 flights between London and Madrid!
5 Avoid sending unnecessary mails, reduce the amount of spam you receive and regularly clean out your inbox.

A.The real impact may actually be even higher.
B.The server is designed to store huge amounts of data.
C.That means more energy consumed, and more carbon emissions.
D.An email with a lot text and attachment can be responsible for up to 50 grams.
E.It’s definitely worthwhile taking a few minutes to do an eco-friendly digital clean-up.
F.We assume that using emails requires only the electricity used to power our computers.
G.Quantities of emails require huge server farms—millions of computers storing information.

Recently a survey about the time that the students spent on smartphones was conducted among students.
As can be seen from the chart, students spent an hour and a half on phones on average in 2020,while the time doubled in 2021.What is the most striking is that students spent 6 hours on smartphones in 2022.The number of hours students spent using smartphones during spare time has shown a sharp rising trend year by year.
Students are seriously addicted to smartphones, and this has a negative effect on their grades and family relationships. So I suggest that students turn off their phones, communicate with friends face to face, and engage in more outdoor activities.(共32张PPT)

A
Parrots are prey animals, which means that other predators (捕食者) in the wild, such as hawks or snakes, are looking to make them into a meal. This one factor influences parrots’ behavior in your house more than any other.
Parrots are most easily hurt when feeding on the ground;membership in a group plays an important function in ensuring their safety and improving their chances of survival from attacks by predators. The most common predators of parrots include hawks, snakes, cats, monkeys, and bats. Some predators make attacks only during the day while others hunt in the night.

As prey animals, parrots are constantly watching out for danger and they instinctively (本能地) react to risks.Their first choice is to take flight. However, if this is not possible, they will fight with their powerful beaks to defend themselves.
Because their biggest enemy is the hawk, parrots are especially reactive to quick movements from above and behind. For this reason,it is wise to avoid quick, sudden movements near your bird. This is a built-in reaction not subject to logic or reason.Simple and relatively harmless household objects can draw extreme fear responses from a bird. For example,a balloon may represent a hawk or a vacuum hose (吸尘器软管) may be the same as a snake in your bird’s mind.

As prey animals, parrots are often frightened by exposure to new household items or strangers. It is important to expose your bird to safe experiences and changes starting at a very young age to build flexibility and improve their adaptability.Variety in diet and toys, travel, and exposure to new people and places all help to make your bird more flexible and adaptable to change.

A volunteer team in South Africa is rescuing pangolins from illegal trade as the animals face growing threats of extinction.
Pangolins,or scaly anteaters as they are otherwise known, are unique species found in Asia and Africa. They are covered in hard scales(鳞甲).When they feel threatened, they roll up into a tight ball with only their scales exposed.

Pangolins are little studied and little understood species. However, they are poached and illegally traded in Asia and Africa.Their meat is considered a delicacy in many Asian countries and the scales are used in expensive clothing and handbags. But much of the illegal trade in pangolins involves their scales, which are thought to fight illnesses.High demand for their scales has resulted in poaching and illegal trade despite the fact that the species is protected.
The African Pangolin Working Group in Johannesburg is a volunteer team of veterinarians(兽医) and wildlife experts. They take care of their wounds, feed them and bring them back to health.Nicci Wright heads the group.

“When we receive those pangolins, they are all very weak, whether they have been with the poachers for a few days or up to two weeks,” Wright said. “They have got wounds and injuries, and it is very pitiful and very difficult to emotionally deal with that kind of suffering and abuse.”
The group is not just treating pangolins. They also help police to identify and catch poachers and traders, often in undercover operations. They also work on anti-trafficking measures. The latest program is to train dogs to sniff out pangolins being hidden and transported.

It is reported that 97 tons of pangolin scales were seized from smugglers who tried to take them out of Africa last year. This amounts to about 150,000 poached animals. However,it’s only about 20 percent of the total number, because the rest escaped with the poachers.“If this trend continues, there is a very likely extinction event for all species of the pangolin,” Wright noted.

Last summer,Hilda worked as a volunteer with dolphin trainers at a sea life park. Her job was to make sure the tanks were free of any items so that the trainers could train the dolphins to fetch specific items. However, one day after cleaning, one of the dolphins,Maya, presented Hilda with a candy wrapper from the tank. When Katherine, the trainer, saw this, she blamed Hilda for her carelessness.Upset but not discouraged by this event,Hilda decided to do some spying on Maya.

The next morning,Hilda arrived at the park early. She put on her scuba gear (水下呼吸器) and jumped into the tank for her usual, underwater sweep. Finding nothing in the tank, she climbed out of the water just in time to see Katherine jumping in on the other side. After what happened yesterday,Hilda knew what she was doing. She watched as Katherine performed her underwater search, but Hilda wasn’t surprised when she surfaced empty-handed.

During the tank sweeps,Maya had been swimming playfully, but now the dolphin stopped suddenly and swam to the back part of the tank where the filter (过滤) box was located. She stuck her nose down behind the box and then swam away. What was Maya doing back there Hilda wondered. She jumped back into the water and swam over to take a look behind the box,and her question was answered.Hilda then swam across the tank following Maya’s path and emerged from the water to find Katherine removing her scuba gear. As Katherine turned around, her mouth dropped open. There was Maya at the edge of the tank with a comb (梳子) in her mouth waiting for her treat.

“Maya! Where did you get that ” demanded Katherine, taking the comb and throwing her a fish.“I know where she got it,” declared Hilda climbing out of the tank with a handful of items still wet from their watery, resting place. “What’s all this ” Katherine asked, obviously confused.

Now Katherine realized what had been going on.Katherine thought to herself, this is really a clever dolphin. And she said to Hilda,“Well,Maya loves treats,so we’ll work together, and you’ll secretly help her collect a few things and put them in the filter at the back of the tank.I’ll give her treats, the number of which I can increase.” Hilda replied,“Good idea.Let’s do it.” From then on, the Sea Life Park is full of warmth and harmony.Maya’s performance in front of the audience is getting better and better.(共35张PPT)
UNIT 1 CULTURAL HERITAGE

A
The Mogao Grottoes were a center of Buddhist life and some of the world’s great cultures for hundreds of years. However,by the late Qing Dynasty they had been abandoned and nearly forgotten and many of the caves had become damaged by the elements.Around 1900,with the discovery of a library of thousands of ancient documents, the caves received new interest from Chinese and foreign researchers.Unfortunately, this resulted in tens of thousands of items from the caves being taken to foreign museums.

In the 1940s,many researchers and artists visited the area to study traditional Chinese art.Copies of some of the artwork painted by respected artists such as Zhang Daqian and Guan Shanyue helped people all over the country learn about Dunhuang. These artists were also inspired by the artwork they saw in the caves and it began to influence their painting styles.Others staved in the desert for much longer.Chang Shuhong stayed for the rest of his life—struggling to record the cultural treasures and protect them from the weather. As a result of their efforts the Dunhuang Academy was formed to protect and study the Mogao Grottoes.

In 1987,the Mogao Grottoes were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While the caves are open to the public, access is now limited in order to protect the artwork. However, the caves can be seen online in digital form so that people around the world can study and enjoy them.
Despite its remoteness, the Mogao Grottoes continue to draw visitors. And just as the sand and desert have survived largely unchanged through the centuries, this small art gallery in the desert has also survived largely unchanged providing an amazing look at a world long ago past.

The Roman Colosseum(罗马圆形大剧场),built around two thousand years ago, survived a 14th century earthquake and most of the 150-some foot high building is still standing. It has seen the rise and fall of enormous structures as well as the Roman Empire. Why could the ancient structure stand the test of time while many modern constructions fall apart after a few decades Scientists believe the ancient Romans used a specific concrete which may account for its super-long existence.

Previous discoveries have confirmed the components of the Roman concrete:volcanic material, limestone(石灰石) and water.Architects suppose the volcanic material is what makes the building strong. But this is not enough to explain the architecture’s durability.A team of researchers recently discovered a magical power of the Roman concrete:self-healing.And the key actually lies in the tiny pieces of limestone.Worth mentioning is that researchers had taken them as impurities(杂质) due to the limitation of ancient technology. But it turned out that ancient Romans seemed to have discovered the secret.

When the Romans made the mixture, they heated up the limestone to turn it into quicklime,a very reactive chemical.Quicklime reacted with water and produced heat that set up a chemical foundation to strengthen the building material.Meanwhile,it would “wear” a hard “shell”,forming limestone pieces. It was these pieces that stopped the cracks(裂缝) from becoming bigger. When there was rain, the pieces reacted with water again, quickly filling the cracks.

For material scientist Ainissa Ramirez, this new understanding of ancient Roman concrete is a welcome discovery.“This is one way that the material can be greener,” says Ramirez,“The Romans made the material. We had to kind of figure out how they did it so that we can make better materials—and then, you know,in turn,be better guards of our environment.”

New animals
In northern Vietnam,in thick forests in the North Annamite Mountains, there is a wildlife park called Vu Quang. In 1986,the area was made an official forest reserve. In 2002,550 square kilometers of the area were declared a National Park. 1 .It is in an area that is hard to get to,for one thing. And it’s an area that’s difficult to walk through because the rocks are covered with algae and are very slippery.

1.B 由下文“It is in an area that is hard to get to,for one thing. And it’s an area that’s difficult to walk through because the rocks are covered with algae and are very slippery.”

2.D 由上文“It is in an area that is hard to get to,for one thing. And it’s an area that’s difficult to walk through because the rocks are covered with algae and are very slippery.”可知,武广国家公园难以到达,不同寻常,下文“In the last twenty years, several new species of animals that have never been seen anywhere in the world before have been discovered there. Some of them are so new that scientists haven’t given them official names yet!”

3.E 由上文“The new animals discovered at the park include the Vu Quang ox or Saola,a ‘slow’ deer,a giant muntjac (the world’s largest,in fact),a black deer and a ‘holy’ goat.”和下文“as well as two species of amphibians and 15 species of reptiles”可知,该空和上下文列举了武广国家公园里面发现的新物种,E项“在那里还发现了五种新的鱼类”切合语境。

4.G 由上文“The Saola was the first new species of large mammal to be discovered in more than fifty years,so it caused a lot of excitement in the scientific world. It is a strange goat-like creature that looks as if it is somehow related to cattle. It has horns that can be between one and two feet long, and that seem to come out of the animal’s head at slightly different angles.”

5.C 由上文“The creature had hidden safely for generations in the Vu Quang area. But once it was discovered,it was in danger.”和下文“Sadly, the Saola is now being hunted and may well end up as another endangered species.”

“can appreciate”和“feel like”构成并列关系,故填and。
故填was built。

make contributions to意为“对……做出贡献”,故填contributions。
8.being preserved 考查非谓语动词。句意:正是当地人希望保护当地历史特色的愿望,使得这些建筑得以保存至今。lead to sb doing意为“导致某人做某事”,为固定搭配,动词preserve意为“保存”,和逻辑主语buildings构成被动关系,所以此处应用动名词的被动语态形式。故填being preserved。

give full play to意为“充分发挥”,故填to。
