I didn’t quite know what I was looking for when I flew to Mongolia for a term abroad. I just needed something different, far from the late-night libraries of my college town. Most different, I hoped, would be my rural homestay: two weeks in central Mongolia with a family of nomadic(游牧的) herders.
I was studying Mongolian at the time, but still, there was so much I couldn’t say or understand. As we walked in the snow behind the goats, my host mom would ask me if I was cold, then giggle (咯咯地笑) and copy a big shiver to make sure I understood. In the evenings, she showed me how to make dumplings with her fingers. My host siblings would talk with me, speaking too fast for me to understand, as we explored the rocks around our tent; I’d listen and nod.
This verbal(言语的) barrier was strangely freeing. In the crowded dining hall at home, meeting new people made me anxious. I’d stay quiet, measuring out my words, struggling for something to say that wouldn’t expose me as unfunny or boring. In Mongolia, I couldn’t perfect my words. I could only smile, and try out one of the phrases I’d mastered: “May I help ” “Where is the dog ” “Are you tired ” My host family laughed at my pronunciation, at the way I threw up my hands and eyebrows in a frequent gesture of confusion. But in their laughter, I felt safe, unembarrassed.
With my Mongolian family on the grassland, I found a feeling of ease I’d never felt before. We were so different, they and I, and not just in language. Their skin was hardened and darkened by sun; I’d been hidden under hats and sunscreen since birth. My host siblings(兄弟姐妹) grew up drawing water from frozen streams and jogging behind herds of sheep; I spent summers at tennis camp.
For me, these gaps made all the difference. Without shared social measures, I wasted no time wondering how I was measuring up. Only real things—kindness, helpfulness—mattered.

26.How did the author behave at the dining hall in her home country
A.She felt at ease in the crowd. B.She usually weighed her words.
C.She asked a lot of funny questions. D.She often made others laugh with jokes.

C.Appearance reflects one’s standard of life. D.Being kind is the common social standard.

As humanity has got richer, animal’s roles have changed. People need their services less than before. Fewer wolves and thieves meant less demand for dogs for protection; the internal combustion engine (内燃机) made horses unneeded; modern sanitation (卫生设备) kept rats in check and made cats less useful. Domestic animals are no longer necessities, but commonly seen companions. Pet-keeping seems to become more and more popular, as a recent survey found that 69% of American households keep at least one pet.
The pet business is growing even faster than pet numbers, because people are spending more and more money on them. No longer are they food-waste-recyclers, fed with the remains that fall from their masters’ tables. Pet food shelves are full of cuisines tailored to satisfy a range of appetites, including ice cream for dogs and foods for pets that are old, diabetic, or suffer from sensitive digestion.
In the business, this is called “pet humanization” — the tendency of pet owners to treat their pets as part of the family. This is obvious in the names given to dogs, which have evolved from Fido, Rex, and Spot to Bella, Lucy, and Max.
People still hold the false assumption that pets must be working for humanity in some way, perhaps making people healthier or less anxious. But the evidence for that is weak. New research suggests that dogs have evolved those “cute eyes” to affect human emotions and control them, which works very well. Humans now work very hard to pay for the care of their pets. For example, Americans often refer to themselves not as cat owners but as the cat’s “mommy” or “daddy”. South Koreans go one step further, describing themselves as cat “butlers (管家)”. Watch an unlucky man walking his dog, plastic bag in hand to pick up its mess, and we have to doubt: who’s in charge now Is this relationship what we really want
28.What can we learn about the animal-keeping trend
A.People’s needs for animal services are increasing.
B.The price for purchasing a domestic pet is on the rise.

D.Both the pet number and the pet business are growing.
29.Which of the following is the evidence of “pet humanization”
A.Pets’ ability to make their owners less anxious.
B.Human’s increasing investment in pet-keeping.
C.Pet’s roles as both working staff and companions.
D.The owners’ preference to give pets human names.
30.What is the author’s attitude towards the current human-pet relationship
A.Skeptical. B.Conservative. C.Unclear. D.Approving.

B.The Growing Trend of Pet Business
C.The Craze for Pet-keeping
D.The Pros and Cons of Keeping Pets
D
“Anxiety.” The very word invites discomfort. Its effects—shortness of breath, pounding heart, muscle tension—are outright upsetting. But, as a clinician, I find that we tend to miss out on many valuable opportunities presented by this human emotion. In and of itself, anxiety is not deadly, nor is it a disease. Quite the contrary: it is an indicator of brain and sensory health. Once we accept that it is a normal, though uncomfortable, part of life, we can use it to help us.
We all know working out at the gym is hard. By nature, a “good workout” is uncomfortable, since it involves pushing our physical strength past what we can easily do. The sweet spot of exercise is always a somewhat challenging experience. Similarly, if you want to be emotionally stronger, you need to face some tension. For example, one effective treatment for fear is exposure therapy (疗法), which involves gradually encountering things that make one anxious, reducing fear over time.
Humans are social creatures. When my patients learn to open up to their partners about their anxieties, they almost always report a greater sense of emotional closeness. Also, as international relationship expert Sue Johnson teaches, when we express our need for connection during challenging moments (e.g., “I’m having a hard time right now and could really use your support”), it creates greater connection and turns our anxiety into love.
From time to time, we find ourselves at the end of our rope. Our responsibilities pile up, our resources break down, and we feel uncomfortably anxious—what we’re experiencing is called stress. Simply put, the demands placed upon us outweigh our available resources, just like a set of scales (天平) going out of balance. Focusing on work and pretending everything is OK only leads to disastrous results. Medical treatment for stress may function for a while, but it tends to make things worse in the long run. The only solution to deal with stress is to do the
mathematics to balance the scales.
32.What does the author say about anxiety
A.It is an invitation to diseases.
B.It indicates stable mental health.
C.It costs us many valuable chances.
D.It is a natural emotional expression.
33.Why does the author mention “good workout” in paragraph 2
A.To prove how exercise influences emotions.
B.To suggest an effective way to challenge limits.
C.To explain how anxiety builds emotional strength.
D.To show a positive connection between mind and body.
34.What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A.The key to closeness is partners’ support.
B.Sharing anxieties improves relationships.
C.Humans are defined by their social nature.
D.Expressing feelings keeps us off anxieties.
35.According to the last paragraph, how can we deal with stress
A.Devote more energy to our work.
B.Increase resources available to us.
C.Seek professional medical treatment.
D.Master advanced mathematical skills.
Do you get nervous thinking about geometry, equations or a coming math test If yes, you are far from alone. 36 Students in countries with higher levels of math anxiety tend to achieve lower math grades, according to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Feb 15.
According to a University of Cambridge study, in ordinary life, many people experience some degree of discomfort when faced with a math problem, ranging from mild tension to strong fear. 37 They may then try to avoid every situation involving numbers, meaning they are held back from pursuing careers related to this
subject.
Comfort comes from the fact that those with math anxiety are not necessarily to be bad at math. 38 They may have had a really bad experience with math and there are ways to improve math achievement.
39 If you’re feeling stressed before a math exam, it may help to spend a few minutes exploring those feelings before the exam begins. It’s about making sure you’re interpreting your feelings correctly. In addition, a little math anxiety could be taken as a positive challenge to overcome. 40
A.Also, there are ways to manage your stress related to math.
B.Students with math anxiety may be disadvantaged in intelligence.
C.If a child has math anxiety, don’t assume that they’re not good at math.
D.Math anxiety has become a common psychological condition among students around the world.
E.Just because you have a fast heartbeat and sweaty palms, that does not necessarily mean you will fail.
F.Just like many people get stage fright before delivering a speech, this nervous energy can help to motivate.
G.Some people also experience physical symptoms such as sweaty palms or a racing heart.

Peter walked home from school. Salty tears ran down his cheeks, and his stomach hurt. He didn’t know what to do. Nokomis was waiting for him on the front porch.
“What’s wrong, Biyen ” said Peter’s grandmother. Biyen was the Ojibwe (齐佩瓦人) name for Peter. He called her Nokomis, which meant grandmother.
Peter looked up. “I have to give a presentation where I talk about a family tradition. I know we have lots of beliefs and customs. Can you remind me of one ”
Nokomis smiled and nodded with a smile. “Come with me,” she said softly. Peter followed Nokomis. She went to a closet, stretched to reach the top shelf and pulled out a small box. She handed it to Peter, asking him to open it.
Peter opened the box. Present before him was a wooden hoop (圈). It was in the shape of a circle. String was
woven and twisted around the hoop. It looked like a spider web. A black bead (珠子) sat near the center with feathers hanging from the bottom. Seeing it, Peter wiped away his tears and smiled.
“This is a dream catcher,” said Nokomis. “Our people have made these for many years. Circles are symbols of unity and strength. Let’s hang it over your bed tonight. It will catch your bad dreams in the web, and your good dreams will fall through the center. Maybe it will give you courage to do your presentation.” Looking at Nokomis, Peter asked whether he could take that to school. Nokomis refused because the dream catcher was extremely precious, which meant a lot to her.
Peter felt disappointed at her words because he wanted to share the dream catcher with his class. “We could make you one,” said Nokomis. “I’d like that!” cried Peter in excitement. Without delay, Nokomis and Peter worked together and they made a dream catcher.

M: Good morning. This is Bob, your entertainment officer for the day. I’d like to tell you what’s on today’s program. First of all, for those of you who are feeling energetic, the keep-fit class meets in the Ship’s Gym in 20 minutes at 9:00 am. If you missed yesterday’s competition in the swimming pool, then come along at 3:00 pm for more fun and games. You don’t need to be able to swim and it’s one way of keeping cool as it looks to be a really clear cloudless day, unlike yesterday, when you probably needed an extra sweater! Now, on to this evening and there’s a change to the advertised film programs. Starting in the Ship’s Cinema at 8:00 pm — not 9:00 pm as advertised — is the classic movie The Singing Moon. There are no tickets for this event, but as seats are rather limited, you’re advised to come along early.

根据Sunbasket的“The recipes are not time-consuming and its menu contains many organic foods and vegetables.(食谱并不耗时,菜单上有很多有机食品和蔬菜)”和Purple Carrot的“Purple Carrot specializes in meals made with plants and you can choose a two- or four-serving meal plan.(Purple Carrot专门提供植物餐,你可以选择两份或四份的套餐)”可知,Sunbasket和Purple Carrot的共同之处在于它们以植物性饮食为特色。

根据第一段的“I didn’t quite know what I was looking for when I flew to Mongolia for a term abroad. I just needed something different, far from the late-night libraries of my college town.(当我飞往蒙古去国外学习的时候,我并不知道我在寻找什么。我只是需要一些不同的东西,远离我大学城的深夜图书馆)”可知,作者去蒙古留学一学期是因为她厌倦了深夜学习。故选B。
25.词义猜测题。根据第二段的“I was studying Mongolian at the time, but still, there was so much I couldn’t say or understand. As we walked in the snow behind the goats, my host mom would ask me if I was cold, then giggle and copy a big shiver to make sure I understood.(当时我正在学习蒙古语,但仍然有很多东西我说不出来或听不懂。当我们跟在山羊后面走在雪地里的时候,我
的寄宿妈妈问我冷不冷,然后咯咯地笑,并模仿一个大大的……,以确保我明白)”可知,因为下雪了天冷而作者不能完全听懂蒙古语,因此寄宿妈妈会做一个发抖的动作问作者冷不冷,则划线词意为:颤抖。故选D。
26.细节理解题。根据第三段的“In the crowded dining hall at home, meeting new people made me anxious. I’d stay quiet, measuring out my words, struggling for something to say that wouldn’t expose me as unfunny or boring. (在国内拥挤的食堂里,结识新朋友让我感到焦虑。我会保持安静,掂量着自己的用词,挣扎着想说点什么,这样才不会让人觉得我无趣或无聊)”可知,作者在国内的食堂里经常斟酌用词以避免说话的无趣。故选B。
27.推理判断题。根据最后一段的“For me, these gaps made all the difference. Without shared social measures, I wasted no time wondering how I was measuring up.

根据第二段“The pet business is growing even faster than pet numbers, because people are spending more and more money on them. (宠物生意比宠物数量增长得更快,因为人们在宠物身上花的钱越来越多。)”可知,宠物的数量增长的很快,但是宠物经济发展更迅速,说明二者都在迅速发展,故选D项。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段“This is obvious in the names given to dogs, which have evolved from Fido, Rex, and Spot to Bella, Lucy, and Max. (这一点从人们给狗起的名字中就可以明显地看出来,它们的名字已经从菲多、雷克斯、点点演变成了贝拉、露西和马克斯。)”可知,狗的名字从动物化的名字转为人类的名字,说明人们开始把他们当作家人看待,也就是“宠物人文化”的证据,故选D项。
30.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Is this relationship what we really want (这样的关系是我们真正想要的吗?)”
根据第一段“Domestic animals are no longer necessities, but commonly seen companions. (家畜不再是必需品,而是常见的伙伴。)”可知,随着人类社会的进步,动物在人类生活中不再是为了生产而屯养的必需品,而是转变为了宠物和伙伴,这说明文章的关键词是“动物”和“角色转变”,A选项(宠物的角色转变)符合题意,故选A项。

【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲述了焦虑虽然令人不舒服,但接受它对我们有帮助。
32.细节理解题。根据第一段中的“Quite the contrary: it is an indicator of brain and sensory health. Once we accept that it is a normal, though uncomfortable, part of life, we can use it to help us.(恰恰相反:它是大脑和感官健康的指标。一旦我们接受这是生活中正常的一部分,尽管不舒服,我们就可以用它来帮助我们。)”可知,焦虑是一种正常的情感表露。故选D。
33.推理判断题。根据第二段中的“By nature, a ‘good workout’ is uncomfortable, since it involves pushing our physical strength past what we can easily do.(从本质上讲,‘好的锻炼’是不舒服的,因为它涉及到将我们的体力推过我们可以轻松完成的事情。)”和“Similarly, if you want to be emotionally stronger, you need to face some tension.(同样,如果你想在情感上更坚强,你需要面对一些紧张。)”
根据第三段“Humans are social creatures. When my patients learn to open up to their partners about their anxieties, they almost always report a greater sense of emotional closeness. Also, as international relationship expert Sue Johnson teaches, when we express our need for connection during challenging moments (e.g., ‘I’m having a hard time right now and could really use your support’), it creates greater connection and turns our anxiety into love.(人类是社会生物。
Simply put, the demands placed upon us outweigh our
available resources, just like a set of scales (天平) going out of balance.(简单地说,对我们的要求超过了我们现有的资源,就像一组天平失去平衡一样。)”和“The only solution to deal with stress is to do the mathematics to balance the scales.(处理压力的唯一解决方案是通过数学来平衡天平。)”

making sure you’re interpreting your feelings correctly. 因此A项“Also, there are ways to manage your stress related to math. 故选A。
40.前文“In addition, a little math anxiety could be taken as a positive challenge to overcome. 67.Paragraph 1:
That night, as Peter looked at the dream catcher over his bed, he had an idea. “Why not share the story of the dream catcher with my class on the presentation day ” Peter said to himself, his eyes sparkling with joy. Immediately, he started to prepare for it. And it took him quite some time before he got everything ready. Early the next morning, he arrived at the school and waited in excitement. Then came the moment, and with butterflies in his stomach, he made his way to the platform. A little nervous as he felt, his grandmother’s words seemed to echo inside his head and words just flooded out of his mouth. “Today, I’m going to give a presentation on dream catchers. It is a fantastic tradition for our Ojibwe to make these, which are the symbols of courage, unity and strength....”
Paragraph 2:
Thunders of applause exploded after Peter gave the presentation. The moment Peter stepped off the platform, he was surrounded by his classmates. Curious to know more about the dream catcher, they insisted that Peter make one in front of them. Brimming with confidence, Peter took out all the materials that he had prepared the night before. He explained every step carefully as he showed them how to weave and twist string around the hoop. A few minutes later, a beautiful hand-made dream catcher appeared like magic. After school, he could hardly wait to get home to
share with his grandmother that it was the dream catcher that gave him courage and strength to do the fantastic presentation.
