Passage 3
(2024·山西晋中·二模)Books are one of the greatest inventions. From the furthest space to the smallest corners of a town, books allow readers to go anywhere that writers can imagine.
At Manchester’s Corn Exchange, a building with a rich history at the heart of the city, an
interesting machine has been set up to help people read more books. It is a book vending machine (自动售货机) that offers free books to anyone.
To use this vending machine, book lovers are asked to bring their own books and give them away in return for tokens (代币). Then they can use a token to choose a book from the vending machine to read. The books you give away are finally placed in the machine for others to take their pick. It is a pretty simple process of reading, swapping, and repeating these steps over and over again.
Producing new books comes with some inevitable (不可避免的) environmental costs, such as the use of large amounts of water and fuel (燃料). Many second-hand books still have great stories to tell. With clever ideas like the book vending machine, books can avoid going to waste and be enjoyed by more people.
8.Where is the book vending machine
A.In a small town. B.In the countryside. C.In a historic building.
9.How can book lovers use the book vending machine
A.By buying some tokens.
B.By giving away their own books.

Passage 4
(2024·内蒙古鄂尔多斯·一模)Sleep like a giraffe
What’s your favorite sleeping position On your back On your side How about standing
up Unless you happen to be a giraffe, I’d never have thought anyone would choose the last one. But now thanks to a Japanese company, it could actually be a real competitor.
Giraffenap is invented to allow the user to take a rest while standing when he/she feels tired or sleepy with the purpose of improving performance at work. It’s about the size of a phone booth (电话亭) and can even blocks out noise. In an introduction to the nap (小睡) box, the company says that it will allow the user to be refreshed in just 20 minutes.
But why does it have to be standing The company explains that studies have shown that sleeping while standing allows people to reach a sleep state in which they breathe easily. When they wake up, they can feel the influence of a nap without having to sleep too much. And they can quickly return to work without feeling dizzy (头晕目眩的). Also, making the box stand upright means that it can save much floor space.
Now, I know what you’re thinking—wouldn’t a person just fall down if he tried to sleep while standing Of course not. Inside the box are four points to support the body—head, buttocks (臀), legs and feet. That means he can rest his arms, legs and head in the box while still remaining upright.
Giraffenap has been made in two different styles—an extremely modern and unusual one named “Spacia” and a wood-covered one named “Forest”. They have been on sale in January 2024, so I hope one day you’ll pick your favorite design and try sleeping standing up—just like giraffes do.

Have you ever shouted at your computer because it wasn’t working Of course, your computer can’t “shout” back. But AI researchers have been working on computers that can argue and perhaps even win debates (辩论) with humans.
IBM scientists recently published a paper in Nature about their new AI system—Project Debater. It can debate with people in front of a live audience (观众). After listening to arguments from its opponent (对手) the system can search around 400 million online articles in less than five minutes. And then it looks for ideas that can support its own argument.
Testing on the system began in 2019. When it debated with Harish Natarajan, a professional debater who holds the world record for the most debate competition victories. The topic was about subsidizing preschool (资助幼儿园)—and Project Debater argued to support this idea. Although Project Debater lost the debate in the end, the audience said it performed very well Interestingly, 58 percent of the audience said that Project Debater increased their knowledge about the topic—only 20 percent said the same about Natarajan.
According to Scientific American, results show that the system is able to form logical
statements (有逻辑的陈述). However, ★ . Passage 8
(2024·江苏无锡·二模)
We are getting used to having robots in our homes, stores, and factories. What about on stage In fact, the word robot comes from a 1920 science-fiction play. In Rossum’s Universal Robots, people performed as the machine-like creatures. Recently, some directors and artists have invited actual robots to share the stage in dances and other performances. Catie Cuan is one of them. “Robots are for everyone,” she says.
Cuan began her career as a dancer and choreographer — a person who maps out the movements of dancers. But she fell in love with robots and has pioneered a new field called robot choreography (编舞). Today, she’s studying robotics at Stanford University in Northern California.
You might imagine robots would dance like machines. After all, that’s how the popular dance “the robot” looks. Most robots today, however, can move in a more life-like manner. It takes time and effort to program robots to do the movements Cuan wants. But the results, she says,
“will surprise you.”
At first, Cuan knew little about robot choreography. In 2022, she wrote, choreographed and performed the stage show In Her Prime. She danced with two other women and two Boston Dynamics spot robots. In the dance, the robots stayed behind a screen so the audience (观众) only saw their shadows. Cuan says that cave paintings inspired her.
In the media, Cuan says, “Robots are often described negatively (负面地).” They may seem alien, cold, or scary. Seeing a robot dance may make the technology seem fun, attractive, or friendly instead. Sometimes after her performances, audience tell her that the dance changes the way they think about robots.
Robots may seem like they’re all about maths and engineering. But, as Cuan suggests, they belong in art, too. “We as humans have been making art a lot longer than we’ve been doing maths,” she says. She points out that we use art and dance to make sense of the world. Cuan thinks that performances like hers will help people feel more at home with robots. “We need to dance with robots to make sense of them,” she says.
31.Why did Catie Cuan use a screen in her dance In Her Prime with robots
A.To show the robots’ shadows. B.To display cave paintings.
C.To hide the robots’ movements. D.To catch the attention of the audience.
32.Which one has the closest meaning to “inspired her”
A.offered her chances B.brought her success
C.sent her messages D.gave her ideas
33.The following sentences would best be placed at the beginning of ________.
This is only one of many dances Cuan has performed with robots. Her goal is to show people new ways to relate to these machines.
A.Paragraph 2 B.Paragraph 4 C.Paragraph 5 D.Paragraph 6
34.What can we learn from the article

Passage 12
(2024·福建宁德·二模)In November, our school went to iFLYTEK for a study tour to get a deeper understanding of artificial intelligence (AI).
The teacher first introduced some common knowledge and real-world uses of AI. For example, it beat humans in some difficult chess games. And ChatGPT could pass math exams with high scores. However, most students questioned the ability of AI. Some classmates even said, “I don’t think AI can do things better than humans in many ways.” But after visiting, we came to believe that AI may be able to do things that humans may not expect.
Then we experienced iFLYTEK’s Starfire model. To test its function, we suggested a Chinese writing topic about happiness that we had been thinking about for a long time. At first, Starfire gave us a common article, so we weren’t happy with it. One student said, “This article has no standout features. I think it should include some character descriptions. And the descriptions should be detailed.” After many suggestions and tries, the AI’s final article was really good. And it won our applause (掌声).

Passage 13
(2024·湖南株洲·一模)Warning: this article may make you want to yawn (打哈欠). Why It’s because we’re talking about the world of sleep cycles (周期) in light of World Sleep Day which was celebrated on March 21st.
Our bodies sleep in 90-minute cycles, experiencing five to six each night. Each cycle has four stages. At first, you enter a light stage of sleep when your muscles relax. Then, the body temperature drops, and the heart rate slows. Next comes deep sleep. It’s difficult to wake up during this stage. This is when your body repairs itself and builds up energy for the day ahead. Finally, you get into the rapid eye movement sleep stage.
Waking up in the morning in the “wrong” stage can make you feel especially tired. An app called Sleep Calculator can help you avoid this. It’s a tool designed to work out the perfect bedtime for you based on your wake-up time.
Developed by the UK company Hillary, this smart app takes into account the sleep cycles
our bodies go through each night. Whether you’re an early bird or a night owl (猫头鹰), simply set your wake-up time, and the app will work its magic, suggesting the best bedtime to help you wake up feeling energetic.
It’s important to remember that you shouldn’t just start your sleep cycle whenever you want. Many young people go to bed late and get up late, such as sleeping from 2 am to 10 am. They think if they have 8 hours of sleep, everything will be fine.
But in fact, our bodies can tell the time by using light and temperature. If we wake up too late, we may feel silly. That’s why sometimes we feel even more tired after oversleeping.

52.How many stages does each sleep cycle have
A.Two. B.Three. C.Four.
53.What are people advised to do according to the last two paragraphs
A.To have 8 hours of sleep a day at any time.
B.To wake up by using light and temperature.
C.To follow the body clock to have good sleep.
54.In which part of a magazine can you probably read this passage
A.Art. B.Science. C.Sports.
Passage 14
(2024·河南周口·二模)Imagine a tiny robot crawling (爬) through your body, helping doctors with their work. It’s not from a science novel. Doctors are now using robots to do operations (手术). This is because robots can do some work that doctors can’t. The robots carry small cameras, which allow doctors to look inside patients’ bodies. The robots also have tiny scissors and other tools. “It’s like having little hands inside the patients,” said Dr. Wang from a hospital in Beijing.
Here’s how they work: The doctor makes a small cut in a patient. Then, the doctor puts the robot through the cut. Next, the doctor controls the robot to reach where it needs to go. Finally, with the help of the robot, the doctor looks inside the patient’s body and begins to work.
The robots have many advantages for doctors and patients. They help cut medical costs and make difficult operations quicker and easier. They allow doctors to operate with less damage (伤
害) to patients’ bodies, too. This helps them to get over faster.
However, the robots aren’t perfect. They can be expensive. What’s more, they are just tools to help humans, and they must be used by skilled doctors. Even the best robots can’t do everything that humans can do.
Scientists are working to make robots smarter. Someday, robots may do even more than expected for humans.

Passage 15
(2024·河南南阳·一模)Scientists in Switzerland have used lasers (激光器) to change the
path of lightning (闪电). The experiment was carried out on Santis mountain in Switzerland, near a TV tower that’s hit by lightning about 100 times a year.
Lightning can cause serious problems on the ground. It can cause fires, destroy buildings, and kill people. The damage from lightning costs billions of dollars every year. Scientists have been trying to find a way to protect buildings from lightning for a long time.
Now, the best way is by putting metal rods (杆) on the buildings. They are connected to the ground and can safely guide the electricity into the ground. ★ If a building is very large, it needs a lot of lightning rods. Some buildings—such as airports—are so large that it’s difficult to protect the whole building using lightning rods.
Another idea is to use lasers to guide lightning. It isn’t new. Scientists have been working on the idea for over 20 years. They have successfully guided lightning with lasers inside a laboratory. But scientists haven’t been able to make it outside until recently. Scientist Matteo Clerici wasn’t part of the experiment, but he also studies guiding electricity. He said, “The fact that they managed to do it in an outdoor environment is really a very big step.”
Although they have made great progress, the laser still didn't guide the lightning as far as the scientists would like. To protect buildings from most lightning, lasers will have to guide the lightning for a much longer distance (距离). The laser is also very dear. The scientists say it costs about $2 billion. It will probably take 10 or more years before a laser is truly able to protect large buildings.
60.Why do scientists try to change the path of lightning
A.To collect electricity. B.To avoid great losses.
C.To test special lasers. D.To save building costs.
61.Which of the following can be put in the “★” in Paragraph 3
A.But they often fail to guide lightning.
B.But they can cause damage to the ground.
C.But these rods can only protect a small area.
D.But these rods only work on large buildings.
62.What does Matteo Clerici think of the experiment
A.It’s worrying. B.It’s exciting. C.It’s creative. D.It’s unexpected.
63.What does the underlined word “dear” in the last paragraph mean
A.Expensive. B.Popular. C.Traditional. D.Dangerous.
64.In which part of a newspaper may this text appear

Passage 16
(2024·江苏苏州·一模)Have you ever imagined that a mobile-phone maker could produce cars one day Xiaomi answered this question with its newly produced electric car SU7.
Three years ago. Lei Jun announced that he would make cars. At that time, online users joked that he should make electric cars as his name has something to do with electricity. Over the years, even the electronics giant like Apple gave up the idea of making electric cars. However, Lei Jun kept his words and really made it.
The company, best known for its popular smartphones, showed its SU7 model on March 28 in China this year. Actually, it is the first electric car from a phone maker. The SU7 would sell for 215,900 yuan to 299.900 yuan in China. The starting price is about 30,000 yuan cheaper than Tesla’s Model 3, which starts at 245.900 yuan.
“This is to keep my promise made three years ago,” he wrote on Tuesday. Lei also added that he’s confident about entering the EV (电动汽车) market, though the competition is strong.
The SU7 comes as EV makers fight for sales in China. Xiaomi may face some sales problems as companies like BYD and Tesla are cutting prices to attract customers to buy their EVs. However, Xiaomi may have some advantages over competitors since it is already well-known and has plenty of faithful customers called Mi Fans.
Whether SU7 will be a success is unknown, but just as Lei Jun said to many young people, life is a long-time race, and temporary (暂时) success or failure is not important. We should believe in dreams and keep making a try.
65.What do we know about Xiaomi according to the passage
A.It is famous for making cars.
B.Its first electric car is a great success.
C.It has no strong competitors in the EV market.
D.The starting price of its car is lower than Tesla’s Model 3.
66.How does the writer show Lei Jun’s character of never giving up in paragraph 2
A.By interviewing his fans. B.By listing some numbers.
C.By using online users’ words. D.By comparing with others.
67.Why is Lei Jun confident about entering the EV market
A.Because Xiaomi is already loved by many.
B.Because most people choose electric cars now.
C.Because SU7 is the best electric car in the world.
D.Because BYD and Tesla have cut prices to attract customers.
68.What would the passage mainly want to tell us
A.Failure is the mother of success. B.It is never too old to learn.
C.The early bird catches the worm. D.Where there is a will, there is a way.
Passage 17
(2024·广东深圳·二模)
Known as “air taxi”, the eVTOL aircraft (电动垂直起降飞行器) completed its first inter-city flight on February 27th. The flight started from Shekou Port in Shenzhen to Jiuzhou Port in Zhuhai. It took about 20 minutes for the over 55-kilometer trip. Developed by a high-tech company, the electric-powered aircraft is able to carry five people with a speed of 200 kilometers per hour.
If this technology can be widely used in air transportation, it will bring great convenience to us. As more and more people have their own cars, we always spend hours being stuck in the street. If this new invention can carry passengers in daily life, electric air taxis will work as a solution to our congested cities. We will then live and work in three dimensions (维度) then.
However, the industry will need to deal with a lot of difficulties. Laws, costs and public acceptance stand in the way of widespread use of air taxis, according to Tim Schwanen, who is the director of the Transport Studies Unit at Oxford University
“In some ways, technology isn’t the difficult part,” Schwanen said. “There are problems around laws and costs, and there are problems around markets. Do we want these services Do we need them ”
Besides, car designer Frank Stephenson, who designs Lilium’s aircraft, said companies
must make safety into their first consideration (考虑). “The moment when one of these things has a problem, you’re going to lose a lot of public confidence and trust.” he said.
69.What can we know about the first inter-city flight of eVTOL aircraft
A.It started from Jiuzhou Port in Zhuhai.
B.It took less than half an hour for the trip.

Passage 20
(2024·广东东莞·二模)
Imagine you walk into your office, with the temperature just right. You sit down and a very valuable and meaningful day begins. This is the kind of smart office that engineers are trying to make. It uses technology to help workers perform their best at work.
It can be bad for your health if you sit in front of a desk for too long. For example, it can cause pain in the back and the neck. Sanon, a company in Zhejiang, built UP7 to deal with this. As a smart lifting desk, UP7 can tell how long a user has been sitting in the chair. When it reaches the setting time, it will “tell” the user to stand up and walk around. It does this by either shaking the table or sending messages to the user’s phone.
The company also invented a kind of smart chair to match with the table. “The chair is so comfortable. It can adjust its arms and height according to your body shape,” a user in Zhejiang said on Xiaohongshu.
In smart offices, you probably won’t use paper notebooks. Instead, you can try electronic paper books to put your work online. N10 from Hanvon Technology in Beijing, is a new “notebook” like this. It uses a screen that doesn’t produce much light. Users write or draw with an electronic pen on the screen.
“It is just like reading and writing on real paper,” a user said. “You can organize, search and save notes easily. You usually need several big paper notebooks to do what the electronic notebook does.”
