A raffle ticket(抽彩奖券) to win a new 1959 Chevrolet; credit cards with no magnetic strip; family photos in black and white: All hidden behind a bathroom wall in the Plaza Theatre, untouched for decades.
Until 65 years later, when contractors discovered a hidden space behind a broken wall in the bathroom during
renovations. Under a mountain of dust, in what used to be a closet, lay a faded red wallet, frozen in time.
From there, Plaza Theatre owner Chris Escobar said he was determined to return the wallet to the family. “It was a portal(正门) back in time,” he said.
That owner was one Floy Culbreth, according to a license inside the wallet. But Escobar ran into his first problem—women were often referred to by their husband’s name at that time, so searching Culbreth’s name yielded few results.
Escobar recruited his wife Nicole, who he calls an “internet sleuth,” to track down the owner of the wallet. She was able to find Roy Culbreth’s obituary(讣告)—Floy’s husband. Through tracing the Culbreth bloodline, Escobar discovered Thea Chamberlain via the Culbreth Cup, a family-run charity golf event. Now 71, Thea recalled her mother’s active community role, including. Sunday school teaching, garden club involvement, and charitable work for cerebral palsy.
The Culbreth family’s gathering at the Plaza Theatre in November to reclaim the wallet was a touching scene. The moment was especially significant for Chamberlain’s young grandchildren. As they explored the contents, they grasped the importance of this family artifact, realizing they were part of a special legacy.

An elderly black man sits on a drum with his legs on two sides. Using his fingers and the edge of his hand, he taps repeatedly at the drumhead, producing strong drumbeat. A second drummer joins in playing with the same rhythm. A third black man plays a stringed instrument, the body of which is roughly fashioned from a calabash
(葫芦). Another calabash has been made into a drum, and a woman beats at it with two short sticks. One voice, then other voices join in. A dance accompanies this musical give-and-take, a moving picture that appears, on the one hand, informal and spontaneous yet, on closer inspection, ritualized (程式化的) and precise. It is a dance of massive size. A dense crowd of dark bodies forms into circular groups—perhaps five or six hundred individuals moving in time to the beat of the music, some swaying gently, others aggressively stomping their feet. A number of women in the group begin chanting.
The scene could be Africa. In fact, it is nineteenth-century New Orleans. Scattered firsthand accounts provide us with fascinating details of the slave dances that took place in the open area then known as Congo Square and there are perhaps no more fascinating documents in the history of African American music. Benjamin Latrobe, the noted architect, witnessed one of these collective dances on February 21,1819, and not only left us a vivid written account of the event but made several sketches of the instruments used. These drawings confirm that the musicians of Congo square, about 1891, were playing percussion (打击乐器) and stringed instruments almost identical to those characteristic of real African music.
Later documents add to our knowledge of the public slave dances in New Orleans but still leave us with many open questions — some of which, in time, historical research may be able to explain, while others might never be answered. One thing, however, is clear. Although these days we tend to view the intersection of black and white musical currents as a theoretical, almost symbolic issue, these storied accounts of the Congo Square dances provide us with a real time and place, an actual transfer of totally African ritual to the native soil of the New World.
28.Which of the following best describes the musical scene in the beginning
A.It’s slow and relaxing. B.It’s lovely and childlike.
C.It’s strong and organized. D.It’s delightful and encouraging.

B.To show the value of the accounts in music history.
C.To familiarize its readers with a type of ancient music.
D.To praise an architect who was a dedicated music lover.
30.What’s the new understanding of the music
A.It’s more of a musical theory. B.It’s more of a vivid life.
C.It’s more of a religious ceremony. D.It’s more of a cultural symbol.
31.What can we learn about Congo Square
A.A place where foreigners held musical festivals.
B.A place where music historians wrote their books.
C.A place where slaves could have a break from hard labour.
D.A place where African music found its voice on the new land.
D
Ever wondered why your partner is up with the lark (百灵鸟) while you are happily sleeping till noon It could be thanks to Neanderthal genes, according to a new study.
Scientists comparing ancient DNA with the genetics of modern humans discovered a “striking trend”, said John Capra, an epidemiologist (流行病学家) at the University of California in San Francisco. The researchers found that the Neanderthal genes that remain affect the body clock —increasing tendency to be a morning person.
Neanderthals lived at higher latitudes (纬度) than our ancestors who migrated from Africa一further away from the equator, with the days longer in summer and shorter in winter. “The gene that makes people early risers likely enables more rapid alignment (协调一致) of the circadian clock (生物钟) with changing seasonal light patterns, ”Dr Capra said, “when Neanderthals were able to make the most of daylight hours to hunt.”
Scientists have previously explored how the circadian rhythms of insects, plants, and fish have developed depending on latitude. But that hasn’t been well studied in humans. There searchers wanted to see whether there was a genetic reason for differences in circadian rhythms between Neanderthals and modern people, and found 16 variants (变异体) associated with greater“morningness”. They suspected that as Neanderthals and the ancestors of modern humans mated, people today could have followed Neanderthal“circadian variants”.
To test this, scientists analyse the genetics of several hundred thousand people from the UK Biobank and found many of the variants that affect sleep preference. “Most noticeably, they found that these variants increase morningness,”the researchers said. This is consistent with what has been found in other animals that have adapted to living at a high latitude, as Neanderthals did.
32.Why does the author mention “your partner is up with the lark”in paragraph 1
A.To introduce the following context.
B.To compare two morning life styles.
C.To praise those who get up early.
D.To express gratitude to Neanderthals.
33.What is the root for Neanderthals’ morningness according to paragraph 3
A.The capability of hunting animals. B.The genes from African ancestors.
C.The environment at higher latitudes. D.The daylight hours around their habitats.
34.What can be inferred in paragraph 4
A.Morningness in human is unlike that in plants.
B.Insects’ circadian rhythms are impacted by latitude.
C.Scientists have previously studied the genes of animals.
D.The genes of Neanderthals is the only reason for morningness.
35.How did researchers prove their subsection
A.By analyzing statistics of the subjects.
B.By observing people’s sleeping habits.
C.By interviewing participants in the experiment.
D.By comparing sleep preference among human and animals.

M: People can’t imagine life without water. Without it, the earth we live on would be a dead one. There would be no trees, no crops, no animals and no people. So water is considered to be next to oxygen in importance.
Although nearly three quarters of the earth’s surface is covered with water, most of it is seawater which is undrinkable. The demand for water is increasing, but water resources are in short supply. Agricultural production needs enormous amounts of water , so does industry. Besides, the rapid growth of population makes it more and more difficult for people to survive because of the water shortage. More than half of the world’s population lives in water-stressed areas and, according to the United Nations, that number will increase to two-thirds by 2025. So water shortage has become one of the most serious problems.
Fortunately, people have realized this pressing problem and are trying to find ways to solve it. First, people are urged to use less water. Second, measures are taken to protect water resources. Third, circulating water is used for industrial purposes over and over in factories and treated sewage water is used for irrigation in farming land.

28.推理判断题。根据文章第一段“An elderly black man sits on a drum with his legs on two sides. Using his fingers and the edge of his hand, he taps repeatedly at the drumhead, producing strong drumbeat. A second drummer joins in playing with the same rhythm. A third black man plays a stringed instrument, the body of which is roughly fashioned from a calabash (葫芦). Another calabash has been made into a drum, and a woman beats at it with two short sticks. One voice, then other voices join in. A dance accompanies this musical give-and-take, a moving picture that appears, on the one hand, informal and spontaneous yet, on closer inspection, ritualized (程式化的) and precise.(一位黑人老人双腿叉开坐在鼓上。
