Citywalk is a type of experience of exploring a city in an immersive (沉浸式的) and slow way. Instead of quickly going to crowded tourist spots, people are choosing to explore busy markets, old streets and interesting alleys (小巷) slowly.
Citywalk is very popular with young people. They are often too busy with their work to explore local areas. Citywalk lets them do this in a fun and relaxing way. This shows that people are starting to want a slower way of life. They want to enjoy things more and don’t want to be in a rush all the time.
Beijing is working hard to fix up old parts of the city. People there are also using new and creative ideas to make the city keep up with the time. In the last few years, Beijing has made many changes to the area around the Liangma River. People have fixed the river banks, planted more trees and flowers, added lights and cleaned water. They want to make the area nicer and better for the environment. As a result. they built an 800,000-square-meter riverside park next to the Liangma River. It helps turn the Liangma River into a “people-friendly river”, being a nice place to visit for people in Beijing.

He smiles and 1,000 great smiles smile back to him, they are warm and nice. As he leaves the house, he thinks to himself, “This is a good place. I will come back and visit it often.”
In this same village, there is another little dog who often gets angry. The dog wants to visit the house, too. He slowly climbs the stairs and hangs his head low as he looks into the door. When he sees 1,000 angry dogs looking back at him, he growls at them and is afraid to see 1,000 little dogs growling back at him. He runs out of the house at once. As he leaves, he thinks to himself: “What a terrible place! I will never go back there again.”

The world is changing all the time. Life today is getting easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but the changes have brought some new problems. One of the biggest problems is pollution. We can see it, smell it, drink it, and even hear it.
People are building the Earth but they are also polluting it at the same time. The more people there are, the more pollution we have. People always take away farmlands to build houses or factories. They kill animals to eat them or make money with their fur. They throw waste things here and there and dump waste water into rivers directly.
Now air pollution is still the biggest one in all kinds of pollution. It is bad for all living things. That’s mainly because of the heavy traffic. Some scientists say it will be much better if people ride bikes instead of driving cars. When you are riding, there is no pollution. But in many countries, people don’t want to go to work by bike. Chongming Island is at the mouth of the Yangtze River. It is the third largest island in China.
One of the biggest advantages of a holiday in Chongming is that it’s really close to the city of Shanghai. When I visited the island in 2021 with my parents for the first time, we took Bus Shen-Chong Line 2 from Pudong, Shanghai. It took us thirty minutes from our home to the bus stop in Pudong. And the one-way trip to Chongming Island took only one and a half hours.
We stayed at a comfortable resort (度假胜地) in the east of the island first. We spent the morning visiting Chinese-style buildings and large gardens. ▲ Then in the afternoon, we spent some hours exploring (探索) the Dongtan Wetland Park—its lakes, bamboo, birds and sheep. On our second day, we visited the Chongming Museum. The museum tells stories of the island’s history. There was a show about old boats and the famous traveler Zheng He. The food there was really fantastic, too. I especially liked fish and Chongming rice cake.
If you are free, go to Chongming Island! You will certainly have a relaxing time there!

Fed up with tourists who only come in to check out the scenery, the owners of Queviures Murria, a grocery store in Barcelona, Spain, have put up a sign announcing a 5-euro fee for coming in just to look.
Queviures Murria has been in business since 1898 and is one of the most eye-catching locations in all of Barcelona. The vintage (老式的) look of the store and the traditional design of the inside attract hundreds of tourists every day, but the problem is that many of them aren’t actually interested in the products sold inside—all kinds of traditional Spanish cured sausages, cold cuts, cured cheeses, oils, wines, etc. According to the store, many tourists enter the store without even saying a simple “hello”, wander around taking pictures, and then simply leave without buying anything. So it decided to charge people for “just looking” just to discourage (劝阻) them.
Toni Merino, one of the managers at Queviures Murria, said that the idea to charge tourists a fee for simply coming into the grocery store and looking around without buying anything started out as a joke, but as the staff and the regular customers became increasingly inconvenienced (打扰) by random tourists looking around, taking pictures, with absolutely no interest in the products on display, they decided to do it.
Merino has clarified that he and his partners have no interest in actually charging the fee, and they don’t really have to anymore. By posting a warning about the 5-euro fee in the shop window, they have managed to discourage most unwanted visitors.
After photos of the 5-euro fee announcement in the window of Queviures Murria spread quickly on social media, the Barcelona business faced a public outcry, and it was forced to explain the reasons and clarify that it didn’t really plan on carrying on the measure.

I was sitting in a Beijing cafe drinking a coffee with my friend. We were at a table looking out a window into a hutong. Many people were walking past us, but one Chinese couple stopped and stared. I smiled and waved back. Then, to my surprise, they took a photo of us! The lady even came up to the window and posed in front of us for another photo. It was very funny and we were all laughing.
A few weeks later, I was visiting the beautiful coastal (海滨) city of Qingdao with two friends. People stared at us and wanted to say hello everywhere we went. It was like we were famous people!
So why were we getting so much attention I think it’s because even though there are many foreigners, like me, living in China today, they are still kind of “rare (罕见的)”. This is especially the case in smaller cities, where there are fewer foreigners. This is probably why we were so popular in Qingdao, but didn’t get as much attention in Beijing.
But China is not the only place this happens. I have traveled to India, Brazil, Per and even the United States and been treated differently, too. Brazilians and US people always want to chat with you, but Indians are by far the most curious (好奇的). When I visited, children and adults were always staring and taking pictures. The best way to deal with it is just to smile, laugh and enjoy it!

Recently, the term “carbon neutral (碳中和)” has been used frequently (频繁地) at some important meetings in many countries. So as middle school students, what can we do to protect the environment (环境) and live a low carbon life Here are some suggestions (建议) for you.
Travel in a green way. Now more Chinese people have cars of their own. It has brought us a lot of benefits but has created some serious problems as well. So we’d better do more walking, cycling and less driving. By doing so, we can save energy and reduce pollution.
Cut down (减少) white pollution. We should reduce the pollution of plastic bags (塑料袋). When you go to the supermarket, bring your own shopping bags.
Save water. Lack of water resources will affect the ecological environment (生态环境). So please turn off the tap after using it.
Sort the rubbish. Doing garbage classification (垃圾分类) in a right way can turn waste into wealth (变废为宝).
Plant more trees. Planting more trees means cutting down and reducing the carbon footprint (碳足迹) and spreading of greenhouse gases. For example, the trees planted in China are playing an important role. A report published in Nature shows that CO2 absorption (吸收) in two new forest areas in China is more than we thought. The two areas are located in China’s southwestern and northeastern provinces. They make up over 35 percent of China’s carbon sinks (碳汇). The main natural carbon sinks are trees and other plants.
Use both sides of the paper. The paper production process uses a lot of trees.
Now is the time that we should take up our responsibility to protect our environment from being polluted. Let’s join our hands and take actions immediately.

106.China’s carbon sinks are mainly located in the ________.
A.southeast and northeast B.southwest and northeast
