Many people now prefer to keep flat-faced dogs as pets. That’s because people think they look very cute. Some people call these dogs “lazy” because they fall asleep more easily than other dogs during the day. However, these cute dogs are having a hard time.
Scientists watched 92 family dogs of different kinds while they were sleeping. During the study the dogs spent three hours with their owners in the sleep lab. With nothing special to do, the dogs soon fell asleep. At that time, the scientists recorded the dogs’ brain activities and found that the flat-faced dogs slept more than the other kinds. This may be because they don’t get enough sleep at night. The scientists explain that this is because of sleep apnoea (呼吸暂停症). During their sleep, they can’t get enough air and may find it difficult to breathe (呼吸), which makes them always wake up.
This, however, is only one of the health problems dogs have because of breeding (培育). According to the website Pet Helpful, a lot of pet dogs are bred depending on what people like, such as shorter legs, heavier bodies, and larger ears.
Lots of pet lovers are calling for people to respect dogs as they are. Annie is one of them. “Dogs are our friends and breeders must take the health of their dogs seriously instead of just for cuteness,” said Annie.
39. What do people think of flat-faced dogs
A. Difficult. B. Special. C. Lovely. D. Serious.

Zhao Li, known as the “the Chinese Fabre”, is famous for setting up Asia’s largest insect museum—the Insect Museum of West China in Sichuan.
Much like the French naturalist Jean Henri Fabre, Zhao’s story with insects started when he was young. In his early years, Zhao started making butterfly specimens (标本) with the help of his parents. In high school, the butterfly specimens he collected were enough to support his first specimen exhibition (展览).
Zhao’s love for butterflies is nearly crazy. During his college years, he went into the forests of western Sichuan every summer. In 1991, the 19-year-old boy rode over 500 kilometers, living in farmhouses, eating dry food, and sometimes even sleeping on big rocks along the way. Finally, he discovered a new kind of butterfly. This was the first time a new kind of butterfly in Sichuan had been discovered by a Chinese person.
The discovery trips can sometimes be dangerous. In 1992, Zhao came across a mudslide (泥流) in Mount Gongga, Sichuan. Luckily, a tree got in the way of a big rock coming toward him and saved him. However, the dangers didn’t stop him from looking for butterflies. To find a nationally protected butterfly, Zhao camped for seven days on the highest place in southern Hainan. He became the first person in China to successfully take a close-up photo of this new butterfly.
Zhao is often called “Prince Butterfly”. But he said, “I’m not a prince, just someone who loves insects.”
42. Who helped Zhao make butterfly specimens
A. His parents. B. His classmates. C. A prince. D. A French naturalist.
43. When did Zhao go into the forests of western Sichuan

45. What does Zhao want to tell us from the underlined sentence
A. He achieved much success. B. He was too old to be a prince.
C. He wanted to be somebody. D. He liked insects very much.

“For thousands of years, humans have raced to be the first … Now, in some cases, we’re racing to be the last.” said The New York Times’ Paige McClanahan. This is the spirit at the heart of last-chance tourism, a rising industry.
Last-chance tourism is about seeing the last of something, that’s to say, visiting places before they disappear. Rising temperature and water levels mean that we may never get another chance to see certain islands, glaciers (冰川), animals, and so on before they disappear.
This may sound sad, but some people are using last-chance tourism as a way to spread environmental awareness. One example is “the Sea of Ice” in Chamonix, France. The Chamonix ski resort (度假村) opened a glacier museum in 2012. There tourists can learn about glaciers and how climate change influences places like “the Sea of Ice”. This effort seems to have an effect. A 2020 survey showed that 80 percent of visitors would “try to learn more about the environment and how to protect it”.
Although it has these advantages, last-chance tourism may also be speeding up the effects of climate change. As more people rush to endangered natural places, they create a bigger and bigger carbon (碳) footprint, leading to the destruction of these places in the end.
At the end of the day, it’s not just about understanding the need to stop climate change; it’s even more important to avoid making it more terrible.
46. What’s last-chance tourism
A. Being the last to see a place. B. Visiting places before they disappear.
C. Traveling to certain islands. D. Seeing some famous natural places.
47. How did the Chamonix ski resort help spread awareness about the environment
A. By opening a glacier museum. B. By offering free skiing training.
C. By listing endangered animals. D. By creating a big carbon footprint.
48. What does the underlined word “destruction” in Paragraph 4 mean
A. Business. B. Discovery. C. Magic. D. Harm.
49. What’s the purpose of the text
A. To show the importance of racing. B. To spread knowledge about glaciers.
C. To introduce a rising industry. D. To tell the effects of climate changes.

Are you troubled by housework, such as cleaning tables or tidying your room A new robot is here to help! It’s also good at watering plants, petting cats and washing clothes. It even knows to shake the pillow (枕头); Sounds good Well, another video posted by researchers may disappoint some people. Mobile Aloha isn’t good at doing housework on its own. Instead, it learns from human actions before doing each kind of housework. When the situation changes, it can’t work well without a human “teaching” it. So it may break dishes, or even burn a pot.
“The robot can successfully move chairs 80 percent of the time,” said the team after they did more research on it. For cooking dishes, it’s only 40 percent. In short, it’s far from perfect. In fact, AI robots are good at tasks such as math and playing chess, but they face challenges when it comes to simpler actions like cleaning. And it’s the same for Mobile Aloha. For example, if its body doesn’t move correctly even just with a small deviation (偏差), its arm may move too far to pick up a glass.
“Robots are not ready to take over the world,” the team posted on Twitter.

During the study, the dogs spent three hours with their owners in the sleep lab.

A. Business. B. Discovery. C. Magic. D. Harm.

A. To show the importance of racing. B. To spread knowledge about glaciers.
