You must have seen his iconic (标志性的) photo, but you might not know the backstory. The photo was taken by Arthur Sasse, on March 14, 1951, Einstein’s seventy-second birthday. In the photo, we can see Einstein sitting in a car, between his wife, Elsa, and Dr. Frank Aydelotte, the head of the Institute for Advanced Study. The story goes that as they were leaving his birthday celebration for their home in Princeton, New Jersey, Einstein was repeatedly asked to smile at the camera. But when Snsse asked for one last photo he made a funny face. Einstein liked the resulting image so much, that he immediately ordered multiple copies so he could sign and send them to friends as a joke. Later on, he used this photo to make greeting cards.Einstein rarely let others get in the way of his fun. He was quick to joke. He rarely wore socks thinking that the shoes should do the job. He let his mustache and hair grow and gave interviews on his porch (门廊) in pink slippers. His commitment to fun ran deep — and yet when Sasse sent his photo to editors for publication, they debated whether it was even appropriate to make it public, given Einstein’s eminence. It only saw the light of day because Sasse related how much the great scientist himself loved the image.According to Walter Isaacson’s biography, Einstein: His Life and Universe, the personalities that contributed most to Einstein’s greatness were curiosity and non-conformism Scientific Lo studies suggest that humor and intelligence are associated. People who show a gift for lun also seem have superior cognitive abilities. Fun has so many levels. Greatness should be defined by scientific standards.CVictim complex describes a personality character of persons who believe they are constantly the victims of the harmful actions of others, even when made aware of evidence to the contrary. Most people go through normal periods of simple self-pity. However, these periods are temporary and minor compared to the deep feelings of helplessness, pessimism, guilt, shame, despair, and depression that consume the lives of persons suffering from a victim complex.Persons with a victim complex tend to repeatedly think about every injury, crisis, or disease that they have ever experienced, particularly those that happened during their childhoods. They refuse to accept responsibility for dealing with their problems and they never accept any degree of blame for their problems. They even find reasons why suggested solutions will not work. As a result, they are often highly critical of others and rarely enjoy lasting friendships. As a noted behavioral scientist, Steve Maraboli, puts it, “The victim mindset dilutes the human potential. By not accepting personal responsibility for our circumstances, we greatly reduce our power to change them.”Being able to let go of a situation with gratitude, peace, and acceptance involves seeing a situation for what it is and acknowledging how you can do better in future situations. But if someone has a victim complex, according to Williams, a clinical psychologist, they’re not able to reflect on the hurt of others and how their actions have made others feel. Because they’re not willing to let go, they’re more likely to harbor ill will and want to see those who’ve hurt them punished. The victim complex originally starts because of a fundamental distrust in the world. To bring sweetness back to how they view situations, we should encourage them to find the bright side in situations. The world can be a bad place, but there are also a lot of beautiful and kind people too. While there’s a possibility for things to go wrong, we need to gently guide them toward the possibility that there’s also the chance things can work out too.8. What is typical of a person with victim complex A. High level of inner conflict. B. An extremely negative state of mind.C. Over concern about the surroundings. D. Lack of willingness to get along with others.9. What is a consequence of victim complex according to the text A. Reduced ability to solve problems. B. Low motivation to seek friendship.C. Loss of control over one’s own temper. D. Risk of being constantly blamed by others.10. Which statement might Williams agree with A. Those who hurt others deserve punishment.B. It’s easier said than done to let go of a situation.C. One should learn to forgive and forget for a better life.D. Seeing other people’s trouble helps overcome the victim complex.11. For what purpose is the last paragraph written A. To give advice. B. To draw a conclusion.C. To express expectation. D. To sum up the main idea.DWind turbines (风力发电机) work especially well out in coastal waters, where ocean winds can be very strong. Offshore wind farms cost more to build than onshore ones. Offshore equipment must be heavier than onshore equipment. It has to stand up to very heavy winds, big waves and strong currents. Sending people to install, operate and repair equipment at sea is costly. But once set up, offshore wind could pick up bonus tasks.According to Haris Ishaq, an engineer at the University of Victoria in Canada, one of the best add-ons to wind farms is making hydrogen gas, which means making a clean power source in a clean way. A device called an electrolyzer (电解器) can split water into hydrogen and oxygen. The electrolyzer needs fresh water, not salt water. To remove the sea salt, Ishaq’s team proposes removing the salt through a special technique, which is supposed to run on the electricity produced by the offshore wind farms.Ishap’s group also proposes adding a second bonus task to wind farms—to capture (捕获) CO2 from the atmosphere. Atmospheric CO2 levels are higher than ever resulting in a worsening greenhouse effect. A process called direct air capture, or DAC, can remove CO2 from the air. The DAC devices need electricity to run. Fans move air across a solid material that captures CO2 and releases everything else. When the solid material is heated to 100° Celsius, it releases the stored CO2. The same solids can then be reused to grab more CO2. The electricity made by wind turbines would power the devices’ fans and the electric boiler, to heat the carbon-collecting solid. To store the CO2 released, Ishaq’s team proposes injecting it into a type of deep-sea rock. That rock reacts with the gas, turning it into more rock in 10 to 25 years.Ishaq’s team modeled wind turbines, electrolyzers and DAC units on computers to confirm their proposed system is a good idea. The next step is to test a small version of this set up on a floating platform in the ocean.12. Why are offshore wind farms built despite many difficulties A. They can serve better purposes. B. They are money-saving.C. They can be used longer. D. They need little maintenance.13. What is the second bonus task intended for A. Reducing greenhouse effect. B. Testing an air-capturing process.C. Exploring a kind of deep-sea rock. D. Starting a hydrogen-collecting project.14. What is the author’s attitude toward Ishaq’s team’s proposal A. Neutral. B. Cautious. C. Uncertain. D. Approving.15. What is the best title of the text A. Clean Energy Is Put into Better UseB. Hydrogen Promises to Be The Energy of TomorrowC. Engineers Propose Add-ons to Offshore Wind FarmsD. How much happiness will it bring to the teachers and students Jamie wandered. As a lively and humorous student, Jamie often makes his classmates burst into laughter with his humor, sometimes even in class. But now, he sat in his English class, mindlessly doodling (涂鸦) on his notebook, when suddenly a notice came from the loudspeaker of the classroom.“Jamie Turner, please report to the head master’s office immediately.”Jamie’s heart sank, not knowing what it was for. When he reached the headmaster’s office he took a deep breath and prepared himself for the worst. But what he found was far beyond his expectations. The headmaster, Mr. Harrison was wearing a giant yellow chicken hat on his head. The hat had red combs, white feathers, and wings that covered his ears. Jamie’s mouth fell open at the sight, too shocked to speak.Mr. Harrison glanced at Jamie over his reading glasses, “I’ve called you here because we’ve been having some complaints about your behavior.”“Complaints ” Jamie repeated, trying to keep his voice steady.“Yes,” he said, nodding seriously. “You’ve been…too funny.”He leaned forward, “You see, we’re getting reports from your classmates that you’re constantly making them laugh in class. They can’t focus on learning.”Jamie’s jaw dropped further. Was that really the reason he was called to the headmaster’s office The principal continued, his tone serious “Now, we take our education very seriously here, and while we appreciate a good sense of humor, we have to draw the line somewhere. We cannot have students spoiling the learning environment with their…their humor. Well, just …just make sure you keep your jokes to a minimum during class time, okay ”Jamie nodded promising he would try to be less funny in class. “Um, Mr. Harrison, why are you wearing a chicken hat ” Jamie asked, unable to contain his curiosity. Mr. Harrison told Jamie that he would play the part of a chicken at the school’s Animal Day performance. Jamie grinned, imagining the sight of his normally serious principal acting like a chicken. Then Mr. Harrison said to Jamie mysteriously, “I have a great idea.”_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________He stood up and thanked Mr. Harrison for giving him the opportunity to perform._____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________河北省沧州市联考2023-2024学年高三下学期4月月考英语试题英语本试卷共12页,满分150分。 How much is the shirt A. 19.15. The best part is that no matter what fun means to you, it can lead you to stand out from the ordinary.4. What was Einstein doing when the iconic photo was taken A. He was joking about Sasse. B. He was making a funny face.C. He was celebrating his birthday. D. He was smiling at the camera.5. What does the underlined word “eminence” mean in Paragraph 3 A. Being loving and caring. B. D. To sum up the main idea.【答案】8. B 9. A 10. B 11. Atmospheric CO2 levels are higher than ever, resulting in a worsening greenhouse effect. The opportunity to contribute to the principal’s act was an unexpected experience. “You mean, I can help you with the Animal Day performance ” Jamie asked, his earlier anxiety now replaced with a surge of enthusiasm. Mr. Harrison nodded with a smile. “Yes, and I think together we can create a show that’s both educational and entertaining.”He stood up and thanked Mr. Harrison for giving him the opportunity to perform. As he left the office, he could already picture the lovely scene. The possibilities were endless, and for the first time, Jamie saw how his humor could be a positive force in his school. He was determined to make the performance become the talk of the school. His humor, once a source of concern, was now his ticket to contributing to the school community.【解析】【导语】本文以人物为线索展开,讲述了作为一个活泼幽默的学生,杰米经常用他的幽默让同学们哄堂大笑,有时甚至在课堂上。 词汇激活行为类帮助:help /assist取代:replace/take the place of想象:imagine/picture认为:think/figure情绪类担心,焦虑:anxiety/worry笑着点头:nodd with a smile/ nod one’s head, smiling【点睛】【高分句型1】 “You mean, I can help you with the Animal Day performance ” Jamie asked, his earlier anxiety now replaced with a surge of enthusiasm.
