With many Chicken Soup for the Soul books in development, we are always looking for new talent. So whether you are a regular contributor or new to our family, please share your stories with us.
Here is the recipe for submission.
Story Guidelines
·Tell a heartwarming story about something that has happened to you or someone you know.
·The story should start “in the action” and draw in the reader. Do not start your story with an introduction about what you are going to say.
·Don’t try fancy moves with tenses. Writing in the present tense about something that happened in the past rarely works.
·Keep your story within 1200 words. Tighten!
Tips about submitting
The only way to submit your stories is to do it on our website. A message, “Thank you! Your information has been received”, is the only confirmation of your submission. There is no email from us. If you have any problems, please write to: webmaster@.
There are many topics in each of our books. If you have a story that you think fits two of the topics, you may submit it to both. Also, there is no limit to the number of stories you may submit for each book.
After publication
If your story is selected to be published, you will be asked to sign our standard permission release agreement. This means that you maintain ownership of your story but you give us the rights to publish it and use it again in any future book or our other products.
After your story is published, you will receive ten free copies of the book your story appears in. You will be entitled to buy cases of your books at half price. You will also receive our monthly newsletter with advance notice of new books.

Humans aren’t the only animals that move to music. Parrots have been known to do it. And now rats have been observed moving their heads in time with the tunes of Mozart, Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson and others, according to a new paper from the University of Tokyo. What’s more, the rats seems to respond (回应) to the same beats that get humans’ feet tapping (轻踩).
The researchers played a sonata by Mozart for lab rats at different changes of the original speed: 75%, 100%, 200% and 400%. Wireless sensors (感应器) on the rats, bodies tracked their movements. Meanwhile, 20 people took part in it and listened to the same music through motion sensor- equipped headphones.
It was observed that the rats’ head movements were the most obvious when the music played at its normal speed, which was around 132 bpm (beats per minute). The same was true for the people taking part in it. The researchers then changed to some pop songs such as Lady Gaga’s “Bora This Way” and Michael Jackson’s “Beat It”,As with Mozart’s, rats moved their heads along the rhythm (节奏) of pop songs, similar to how people do, at about 120 to 140 bpm.
The study showed that both rats and humane moved their heads along to the beat in a similar rhythm. The level of head moving from both humans and rats decreased as the music sped up. The study suggests that there is something similar about the way human and rat brains respond to rhythm, but rats do not match their motions to the beat like humans do. Humans can tell the timing of a beat in advance and move predictably to it.
Aniruddh Patel, a psychologist who studies brain response to music, says humans and parrots respond to beats with big, voluntary movements such as head shaking, dancing or foot tapping. Patel also stresses that this study does not show that rats have the same emotional associations with music as humans do. Yet he believes it could help show how humans and some other animals developed a sense of rhythm.
4. What does the study focus on
A. How music influences rats’ brains.
B. Whether rats can respond to human music.
C. Which types of music is attractive to rats.
D. Why rats respond to music like human do.
5. At which speed would rats show the clearest movements
A. 75 bpm. B. 100 bpm. C. 132 bpm. D. 150 bpm.
6. How are rats different from humans in response to music
A. They seem more interested in pop music.
B. They are unable to tell the beat of music in advance.
C. They prefer moving their heads with the beat of music.
D. They make similar movements to different rhythms.
7. What is Patel’s attitude towards the study
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Uncaring. D. Negative.
【答案】4. B 5. C 6. B 7. A

I was 68 when I first stepped on stage as a standup comedian in 2003. I’d never set foot in a comedy club before. I’ve always been a performer - I’ve worked as a singer, actor and musician - but all that came to an end after 9/11. I live in New York, and we watched the twin towers fall from my apartment building. For a year afterwards, nobody wanted to go out or be entertained.
It was then that I started to think about comedy. I realised people needed to laugh, to enjoy themselves again, and thought that with a little training I could do it. I took a few classes, tried to work out a routine, and finally plucked up the courage to get up on stage. That first time was terrifying. I had no idea what the audience would make of me.
In New York, comedians are typically young men with beards. It’s hard enough to break through as a woman, even harder as someone old enough to be their grandmother. As I stepped on stage that first time, people laughed nervously. They were clearly surprised to see me. I introduced myself, stated my age and tried my first joke. There was silence. But by the time I got to the third line, people were properly laughing, I was addicted.
Now my sets differ. I might be on stage for 10 minutes in front of a dozen people, or my one-woman show is a full hour in front of a crowd of 100. Even today, I’m nervous before I step out. My first line is, “Hello, everybody. I’m 88 and three-quarters years old. I’m telling you that in case I don’t make it all the way through the show.” Then people laugh and I relax.
After a show, people young and old come up to me, saying what an inspiration I am. They say they want to be as active as me when they reach my age. I’m pleased I can show that as an older person you don’t need to take a back seat in life.
I’ve no intention of stopping comedy. I’m taking all these pills, trying to stay alive, and I hope to still be performing when I’m 100. My goal is to still be up there making people laugh. It’s hard work, but it stops me being bored. I’d only be playing golf otherwise
8. What made the writer take up comedy
A. She wanted to overcome her fears B. She wanted to brighten others’ lives
C. She was unwilling to quit performing D. She wanted to work out a routine
9. Why does the writer mention young men with beards in Paragraph 3
A. To show the challenge she was facing
B. To explain her attraction to the job
C. To illustrate her special advantage
D. To describe her new friends in comedy
10. How has the writer made progress since her first performance
A. She now performs before larger audiences
B. She no longer feels nervous before performances
C. She remains on the stage for a longer time
D. She has learned to make a joke of her age
11. Which of the following statements would the writer agree with
A. Age is just a number
B. Advancing years bring greater wisdom
C. Old age means a chance to sit back
D. Being elderly means you have to slow down
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. D 11. A

【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段的“It was then that I started to think about comedy. I realised people needed to laugh, to enjoy themselves again, and thought that with a little training I could do it. (就在那时,我开始思考喜剧。我意识到人们需要笑,需要重新享受生活,我想只要稍加训练,我就能做到)”可知,作者从事喜剧是因为她想让人们的生活快乐起来,重新享受生活。故选B。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段的“In New York, comedians are typically young men with beards. It’s hard enough to break through as a woman, even harder as someone old enough to be their grandmother.(在纽约,喜剧演员通常是留胡子的年轻人。作为一个女人,想要突破已经很困难了,对于一个年纪大到已经是他们祖母的人来说,就更难了)”推知,作者提到留胡子的年轻人是为了表明她所面临的挑战——性别和年龄。故选A。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第三段的“Even today, I’m nervous before I step out. My first line is, “Hello, everybody. I’m 88 and three-quarters years old. 【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段的“They say they want to be as active as me when they reach my age. I’m pleased I can show that as an older person you don’t need to take a back seat in life.(他们说,当他们到了我这个年纪时,他们想和我一样活跃。我很高兴我能证明,作为一个老年人,你不需要在生活中退居二线)”和最后一段的“I’ve no intention of stopping comedy. I’m taking all these pills, trying to stay alive, and I hope to still be performing when I’m 100.(我无意停止演喜剧。我吃了这么多药,努力活下去,我希望我100岁的时候还能继续表演)”推知,作者认为年龄只是一个数字而已,无论到了哪个年龄阶段,我们都可以做自己喜欢且有意义的事情。故选A。
D
The climate crisis may lead the human race to decrease in size, as mammals (哺乳动物) with smaller bodies appear better able to deal with rising global temperatures, a leading fossil expert said.
Prof Steve Brusatte, a palaeontologist (古生物学家) at the University of Edinburgh, suggested that the way in which other mammals have previously responded to periods of climate change could offer an insight into humans’ future.
He compared the potential situation of people as similar to that of early horses, which became smaller in body size as temperatures rose around 55m years ago, a period called the Paleocene Eocene Thermal Maximum.
Writing in The Rise and Reign of the Mammals, Brusatte notes that animals in warmer parts of the world today are often smaller than those in colder areas, an ecological principle known as Bergmann’s rule. “The reasons are not entirely understood, but it is probably, in part, because smaller animals have a higher surface area compared to their size than bigger animals and can thus better get rid of extra heat” he writes.
Brusatte said that becoming smaller was “a common way that mammals deal with climate change”. He added, “That’s not to say every species of mammal would get smaller, but it seems to be a common survival trick of mammals when temperatures spike pretty quickly, which does raise the question: if temperatures do spike really quickly, might humans dwarf, might humans get smaller And I think that’s certainly convincing.”
In a recent study, researchers studying human remains over the past million years have also suggested that temperature is a major predictor of body size variation, while scientists studying red deer have said that warmer winters in northern Europe and Scandinavia may lead to the body size of these animals becoming smaller.
However, not all experts agree that rising temperature causes mammals to decease. Prof Adrian Lister, of the Natural History Museum in London, said the relationship shown by the recent human remains study is weak, while the strong relationship between temperature and mammal body size may often result from the availability of food and resources.
Lister doubts whether humans will shrink as the climate heats. “We are not really controlled by natural selection,” he said. “If that was going to happen, you’d need to find large people dying before they could reproduce because of climate warming. That is not happening in today’s world. We wear clothes, we have got heating, we have got air conditioning if it is too hot.”
12. According to the passage the early horses got smaller in body size .
A. to keep cool B. to save food
C. to keep warm D. to avoid being killed
13. What does the underlined word “spike” in the 5th paragraph mean
A. Rise B. Drop C. Balance D. Change
14. What is Brusatte most likely to agree with
A. Every species of mammal would get smaller as the temperature goes up.
B. Animals in warmer areas are definitely smaller than those in colder areas.
C. Smaller animals have a higher surface area and so they can cool down quickly.
D. The change of Mammals’ body size is closely related to their food and other resources.
15. What’s the best title of the passage
A. Climate Change Causes Natural Disasters. B. Climate Change Leads to Heated Discussions.
C. Climate Change Causes Changes in Body Size. D. Climate Change Leads to Changed Lifestyle.
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. C 15. C

【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“The climate crisis may lead the human race to decrease in size, as mammals (哺乳动物) with smaller bodies appear better able to deal with rising global temperatures, a leading fossil expert said.(一位著名化石专家说,气候危机可能导致人类体型变小,因为体型较小的哺乳动物似乎更能应对全球气温上升)”;第三段“He compared the potential situation of people as similar to that of early horses, which became smaller in body size as temperatures rose around 55m years ago, a period called the Paleocene Eocene Thermal Maximum.( 他将人类的潜在情况与早期马的情况进行了比较。大约5500万年前,随着气温的升高,马的体型变小了,这一时期被称为古新世始新世热极大期)”和第四段“The reasons are not entirely understood, but it is probably, in part, because smaller animals have a higher surface area compared to their size than bigger animals and can thus better get rid of extra heat(原因尚不完全清楚,但部分原因可能是,与体型相比,较小的动物的表面积比较大的动物要大,因此可以更好地排出多余的热量)”可知,早期的马体形变小是为了对抗气温升高。故选C。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第一段“The climate crisis may lead the human race to decrease in size, as mammals (哺乳动物) with smaller bodies appear better able to deal with rising global temperatures, a leading fossil expert said.(一位著名化石专家说,气候危机可能导致人类体型变小,因为体型较小的哺乳动物似乎更能应对全球气温上升)”和划线词后文“if temperatures do spike really quickly, might humans dwarf, might humans get smaller ( 如果气温确实迅速上升,人类可能会变矮,人类可能会变小吗?)”可知,在温度高的地区,动物体形会变小,这是他们应对气候变化的生存技巧,故spike意为“升高”。故选A。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段““The reasons are not entirely understood, but it is probably, in part, because smaller animals have a higher surface area compared to their size than bigger animals and can thus better get rid of extra heat” he writes.(他写道:“原因尚不完全清楚,但部分原因可能是,与体型相比,小型动物的表面积比大型动物大,因此可以更好地排出多余的热量。”)”可知,Brusatte最可能同意的观点是较小的动物有较大的表面积,所以它们能很快冷却下来。故选C。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“The climate crisis may lead the human race to decrease in size, as mammals (哺乳动物) with smaller bodies appear better able to deal with rising global temperatures, a leading fossil expert said.(一位著名化石专家说,气候危机可能导致人类体型变小,因为体型较小的哺乳动物似乎更能应对全球气温上升)”结合文章主要说明了气候变暖与人类体形之间关系的两种观点。可知,C选项“气候变化导致体型变化”最符合文章标题。故选C。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
What is culture Culture is too complex to define in simple terms. ____16____ One is that culture is a total pattern of behaviour that is consistent in its components. Another fundamental is that culture is learned behaviour. The third is that culture is behaviour that is shared by a group of people.
To understand the culture of a particular country or region, one could examine its components, among which are material culture, language, and social organization. Material culture includes the tools and symbols in a society, not including those physical things found in nature, unless they have undergone some change or have been given meaning by people. ____17____ The way we consume and what we consume are heavily influenced by material culture.
____18____ Linked with all other aspects of culture, it reflects the nature and values of that culture. Industrialized societies have a rich vocabulary for commercial and industrial activities, while less industrialized societies may have richer vocabularies for matters important to their societies. The Eskimos in Alaska have many words to describe snow whereas English has only one general term.
Social organization differs somewhat from society to society. The primary kind of community association is based on blood ties. ____19____ It provides mutual protection, psychological support and a kind of economic insurance or social security for its members. The term “brothers” in Zaire includes those whom we call cousins and uncles.
Cultural analysis serves a variety of purposes. Understanding the various dimensions and their inter-relatedness helps promote cross-cultural awareness. ____20____
A. Language is the most obvious difference between cultures.
B. Some scholars even suggest that it is useless to try.
C The values represented within a culture can also change with the passing of time.
D. However, there are certain agreed-on fundamentals that can be easily identified.
E. In many developing countries, the extended family fulfils several social and economic roles.
F. For example, a mouse running on a street is not part of a culture, but the Mickey Mouse is.
G. It leads on to the promotion of goodwill, social and economic planning and harmony between social groupings or societies.
【答案】16. D 17. F 18. A 19. E 20. G
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。本文阐述了构成文化的三个方面。
【16题详解】
根据后文“One is that culture is a total pattern of behaviour that is consistent in its components. Another fundamental is that culture is learned behaviour. The third is that culture is behaviour that is shared by a group of people.(一是文化是一种行为的整体模式,其组成部分是一致的。另一个基本原则是,文化是后天习得的行为。第三,文化是一群人共同的行为)”可知,这三种基本原则正是对D项“However, there are certain agreed-on fundamentals that can be easily identified.(然而,在一些容易确定的基本原则上存在某些共识)”中“there are certain agreed-on fundamentals”的详细说明。故选D。
【17题详解】
前文“Material culture includes the tools and symbols in a society, not including those physical things found in nature, unless they have undergone some change or have been given meaning by people.(物质文化包括社会中的工具和符号,不包括自然界中的物质,除非它们经历了一些变化或被人们赋予了意义)”在讲解物质文化包括的内容,F项“For example, a mouse running on a street is not part of a culture, but the Mickey Mouse is.(例如,街上的老鼠不是文化的一部分,但米老鼠却是)”是对物质文化的举例。故选F。
【18题详解】
根据第二段的第一句“To understand the culture of a particular country or region, one could examine its components, among which are material culture, language, and social organization.(要了解一个特定国家或地区的文化,可以考察其组成部分,其中包括物质文化、语言和社会组织)”可知,其后的内容是按照物质文化、语言和社会组织三方面进行阐述的,设空处前一段已对物质文化做了解释,按照文章逻辑此段内容应为语言,A项“Language is the most obvious difference between cultures.(语言是不同文化之间最明显的差异)”从整体上概述了语言特征,且从后文中出现的“vocabulary”和“words”也可看出,本段在讲述语言。故选A。.
【19题详解】
后文“It provides mutual protection, psychological support and a kind of economic insurance or social security for its members.(它为其成员提供相互保护、心理支持和经济保险或社会保障)”中的“mutual protection, psychological support and a kind of economic insurance or social security for its members”是对E项“In many developing countries, the extended family fulfils several social and economic roles.(在许多发展中国家,大家庭承担着多种社会和经济角色)”中“several social and economic roles”的列举。故选E。
【20题详解】
根据前文“Understanding the various dimensions and their inter-relatedness helps promote cross-cultural awareness.(了解各方面及其相互关系有助于提高跨文化意识)”可知,了解文化的构成是有好处的,G项“It leads on to the promotion of goodwill, social and economic planning and harmony between social groupings or societies.(它促进善意、社会和经济规划以及社会团体或社会之间的和谐)”中的it指代“了解文化构成”,承接前文,继续说这样可以带来的好处。故选G。

Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks.
One day, Ali took Zahra's shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it a secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali’s running shoes. Zahra's school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.
Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided(碰撞) with Ali from behind and he crashed to the ground.
Ali looked up and saw the other boys rushing ahead.

Just then he suddenly heard the announcement from the broadcast that he won the third prize as the runner who collided with Ali was disqualified for breaking the rule. Holding the shoes close to his chest during the award ceremony, Ali felt overjoyed and relieved as he eventually won the shoes for his sister.
Filled with delight, Ali walked home quickly. He could not wait to see his sister and share the good news. On his arrival, Ali found Zahra was waiting outside. Nervous and anxious, Zahra wondered whether her brother had brought her what she was expecting. “Zahra, see what I have got for you.” Ali said excitedly, taking the prize out of his bag with his trembling hands. The instant Zahra saw the shoes, her face lit up.

A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Uncaring. D. Negative.

The climate crisis may lead the human race to decrease in size as mammals (哺乳动物) with smaller bodies appear better able to deal with rising global temperatures, a leading fossil expert said.

C. to keep warm D. to avoid being killed
D The change of Mammals’ body size is closely related to their food and other resources.
15. What’s the best title of the passage
A. Climate Change Causes Natural Disasters. B. Climate Change Leads to Heated Discussions.
C. Climate Change Causes Changes in Body Size. D. Climate Change Leads to Changed Lifestyle.

Ali looked up and saw the other boys rushing ahead
