I used to believe that only words could catch the essence of the human soul. The literary
works contained such distinct stories that they shaped the way we saw the world. Words were

what composed the questions we sought to uncover and the answers to those questions
themselves. Words were everything.
That belief changed.
In an ordinary math class, my teacher posed a simple question: What’s 0.99 rounded to the
nearest whole number Easy. When rounded to the nearest whole number, 0.99=1. Somehow, I
thought even though 0.99 is only 0.01 away from 1, there’s still a 0.01 difference. That means
even if two things are only a little different, they are still different, but doesn’t that make them
completely different
My teacher answered my question by presenting another equation(等式) : 1=0.9, which
could also be expressed as 1=0.999999.… repeating itself without ever ending.
There was something mysterious but fascinating about the equation. The left side was
unchangeable, objective: it contained a number that ended. On the right was something endless,
a number repeating itself limitless times. Yet, somehow, these two opposed things were
connected by an equal sign.
Lying in bed, I thought about how much the equation paralleled our existence. The left side
of the equation represents that sometimes life itself is so unchangeable and so clear. The concrete,
whole number of the day when you were born and the day when you would die. But then there
is that gap in between life and death. The right side means a time and space full of limitless
possibilities, and endless opportunities into the open future.
So that’s what life is. Objective but imaginative. Unchangeable but limitless. Life is an
equation with two sides that balances itself out. Still, we can’t ever truly seem to put the perfect
words to it. So possibly numbers can express ideas as equally well as words can. For now, let’s
leave it at that: 1=0.999999. … and live a life like it.
24. What does the author emphasize about words in paragraph 1
A. Their wide variety. B. Their expressive power.
C. Their distinct stories. D. Their literary origins.
25. What made the author find the equation fascinating
A. The repetition of a number.
B. The question the teacher raised.
C. The difference between the two numbers.
D. The way two different numbers are equal.
26. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “paralleled” in paragraph 6
A. Mirrored. B. Composed. C. Measured. D. Influenced.
27. What is a suitable title for the text
A. The Perfect Equation B. Numbers Build Equations

People may form inaccurate impressions about us from our social media posts, finds new
Cornell University research that is the first to examine perceptions of our personalities based on
online posts.
An analysis of online status updates found great difference between how viewers saw the
authors across a range of personality traits (个人特质), and the authors’ self-perceptions.
Viewers rated the Internet users as having lower self-esteem and being more self-revealing
than the users rated themselves. Status updates containing photos, videos or links in addition to
text facilitated more accurate assessments than those with just text, the researchers found.
Overall, the study illustrates the dynamic process by which a cyber audience tries to make
sense of who we are from isolated fragments (碎片) of shared information, jointly constructing
our digital identity.
“The impression people form about us on social media based on what we post can differ
from the way we view ourselves.” said Qi Wang, professor of psychology and director of the
Culture & Cognition Lab. “A mismatch between who we are and how people perceive us could
influence our ability to feel connected online and the benefits of engaging in social media
interaction.”
The Cornell researchers believe their study is the first to investigate audience perceptions
of social media users through their posts. On platforms, users often share fragmentary personal
narratives while interacting with “friends” they may know only a little or sometimes not at all.
Wang said the findings could help developers design interfaces (界面) that allow people to
express themselves most authentically.
“If people’s view of us is very different from who we actually are, or how we would like to
be perceived,” Wang said, “it could harm our social life and well-being.”
28. What may your online posts lead to according to the research
A. Dynamic digital identity. B. Viewer’s misjudgment of you.
C. Less social media interaction. D. Limited social perception.
29. Which of the following will least reveal your personality
A. A link with text. B. A pure video post.
C. A plain text post. D. A text post with photos.
30. Why is a viewer’s perception of an author different from the author’s own
A. The author facilitates status updates
B. The author constructs the personal traits.
C. The viewer rates the frequency of the posts.
D. The viewer assesses partial shared information.
31. What does Wang think of the result of the research
A. Harmful. B. Meaningless. C. Useful. D. Unpractical.

You probably know that sunshine affects your mental and physical health. New research
shows it may also affect your appetite-but only if you’ re male.
That finding surprised Carmit Levy, who had been studying how ultraviolet-B(UV-B)
rays affect the skin of mice. The sun’s UV-B rays are the main cause of sunburns and skin
changes that can lead to cancer. Levy exposed mice to these rays for a few weeks. The dose was
so weak that it didn’t cause any redness. But Levy noticed changes in the animals’ fat tissue. Part
of the mice also became heavier.
Levy ordered new mice to look into these unexpected changes. The new group included a
mix of males and females. She found that UV-B exposure enhanced the appetite of male mice—
but not females’. The males also worked harder to get at food that was difficult to reach.
Something was really motivating them to eat more.
She wondered whether sunlight might have a similar effect on people. To find it out, she
gathered volunteers for two studies. Both suggested that men and women may respond
differently to UV-B. But the number of volunteers in these tests was too small to be persuasive.
Fortunately, Levy’s colleague Andrews had access to data from almost 3, 000 people.
They’d all participated in Israel’ s first nutrition survey, some 20 years before. These data showed
that 1, 330 of the surveyed men consumed more food in summer months. From March to
September, they tended to down about 2, 188 daily calories. They averaged only about 1, 875
calories from October to February. The 1, 661 women in this study consumed about 1, 500
calories per day all year long.
Longer days in summer give males of many species more time to hunt and provide for their
families. Consuming more food would give them the energy to do just that. In human evolution,
UV-B might have motivated our male ancestors to hunt more to help their community survive.
32. Where is the text most probably taken from
A. A textbook on biology.
B. An abstract of a food journal.
C. A review of medical research.
D. An essay from the science website.
33. What happened to the mice after weeks’ exposure to UV-B rays
A. Their fat tissue decreased. B. Some of them gained weight.
C. Their skin became reddened. D. Some of them developed cancer.
34. What did Levy do when she found her studies weren’t convincing enough
A. She gathered more volunteers.
B. She set out to conduct more tests.
C. She invited more scientists to join her.
D. She turned to some previous research data.

When we are faced with a crisis, or if we have an important decision to make, many of us
fall into the trap of over-thinking. We may keep thinking about something constantly and too
long. 36 How can we stop ourselves from over-thinking
Doing something to distract yourself is a good idea. You can find working with your hands
is especially good. 37 Your brain simply doesn’t have the resources to split itself into a
third activity, for example over-thinking.
38 Studies have shown that when someone views something in excitement and
anxiety, the brain is forced to become stuck in the present because all of your senses are
completely engaged. You do not have time to focus on something different because your mind
is focused on what is stimulating you right now.
Constant wishing, hoping and praying do not give you any relief. They just keep you stuck
in one place. But taking the smallest step off the crisis really matters. It will set things in motion,
making you like a snowball. 39
The traps are things that cause your natural ability to react without realizing that there is a
connection between the two. Thus, avoiding relevant traps is also a good idea. 40 For
example, if one of your colleagues is so negative that she always drags you down, stop hanging
out with her by having lunch alone at a nearby restaurant.
A. This mindset tends to ruin our day.
B. Put simply, out of sight, out of mind.
C. Just as a saying goes, once bitten, twice shy.
D. Try watching a suspenseful (悬疑的) movie.
E. You are really getting your brain working for you.
F. Thus, you will gradually move yourself out of the feeling.
G. It engages your motor skills as well as your thinking process.

On warm September night, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, soft sea winds filled the
air. The moon was full. Mira could feel the energy in the air. She loved everything about the
ocean, and this evening she had come down to the beach to enjoy the salty night air and hear the
waves washing over the sand gently.
Mira closed her eyes and listened to the waves. The gentle rolling sound was calming.
Suddenly, Mira could hear another sound, too. She listened carefully. The sound was so soft that
she could barely hear it. She opened her eyes and looked down at the sand. It was moving! All
of a sudden, she could see a tiny head coming out. Then, she saw four tiny feet and a shell. A
turtle had emerged!
Mira looked in amazement at the baby turtle. In the moonlight she could just make out the
green and brown pattern on its shell. It was so small! She watched with wonder as other baby
turtles began to emerge. One by one they struggled out of their underground nests. Soon the
beach was like a moving carpet of tiny turtles.
Mira knew the turtles should head towards the waves and swim away, so she was puzzled
when they began to pull themselves in the opposite direction. Why would the turtles be going
away from the ocean
Suddenly, she remembered something she had heard from some people living here.
“Loggerhead sea turtles come back here every year in April. They bury their eggs on the beach
and in the first week of September those baby turtles hatch and head back down to the sea. But
some of them never make it. Sometimes they die going across the beach, trying to find those
bright lights in the houses. The lights confuse the sea turtles.”

hundreds of times. Just as an old saying goes, “Nothing tastes better than dumplings.” During
the Spring Festival and other holidays, Chinese people like to follow the auspicious custom of
eating dumplings.

on the porch rocking her baby sister. Accompanying her was his father drinking lemonade. Mira

M: Yeah, we stayed by a lake so there was the chance to go skating. My performance was pretty
awful.
W: But you were only a beginner. It takes time to make progress.

(Text 6)
M: As this is your first visit here, I’ll show you around.
W: Thank you, sir.
M: As you can see, shelves are clearly classified according to subjects. Most books you may take
home with you but some, such as foreign language dictionaries over there behind the
computers must be used here.
W: OK. I know.
M: It’s best if you take them to the desks by the window and study them there. And you can use
these armchairs near the door if you’d like to take a break.
听下面一段对话,回答第 8 和第 9 两个小题。现在,你有 10 秒钟的时间阅读这两个小题。
(Text 7)
W: So how did you like the new sports center
M: Well, there’s a wide choice of things to do … It’s just that their advertisements said
“something to suit all the family”. I wish they had water games for the under-fives. There was
nothing really suitable for them. But you can learn to windsurf or sail, and you have the
freedom to go anywhere in the lake …
W: Isn’t that a bit dangerous
M: Not really. Nobody’s allowed in the water without a life jacket, and a rescue boat is on hand
all the time.
听下面一段对话,回答第10至第12三个小题。现在,你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。
(Text 8)
W: May I help you, Sir
M: Yes. I want to sell a bookshelf, and I’d like to put an advertisement in the newspaper, please.
W: OK. What’s your name, please
M: Bill Martyn.
W: OK. Then you can pay the advertisement bill through online banking.
M: That’s great. I don’t bring much cash with me.
W: OK. We’ll charge you for the advertisement by the inch, not by the word. So, using short
words might save you some money.
M: Oh, that’s a good idea. I have everything written out here, but I’ll just check it over before I
give it to you. Maybe I can use some shorter words, too.

W: OK. You can use that table over there. Just bring it back to me when you are ready.
听下面一段对话,回答第 13 至第 16 四个小题。现在,你有 20 秒钟的时间阅读这四个小
题。
(Text 9)
W: Charles, can you give us some advice about improving our ability to memorize
M: Yes! Try to visualize an image that is connected to the thing you need to remember. For
example, you can use several images to remember a list of ingredients for a recipe.
W: Yes, that makes sense.
M: Singing can help with memorization too. It is one of the earliest memory tricks that are used
for learning new concepts. I used to “sing” lists of historical facts and dates. It works.
W: And did you have to sing aloud in your history exams
M: Not aloud! But I did use to sing in my head. And I always got good marks for history.
W: Any more tips, Charles
M: Yes! I’ve saved the best one till last. It’s particularly relevant for any students who have tuned
in. Teach whatever it is that you want to remember. So, if you’re studying for an English
exam, teach the concepts to someone else. It really works because in order to teach something
you need to digest it first.
W: Thank you, Charles. Now, I think we’ve got time for a couple of questions from our listeners.
听下面一段独白,回答第 17 至第 20 四个小题。现在,你有 20 秒钟的时间阅读这四个小
题。
(Text 10)
W: Thanks for inviting me tonight. As you know, my main interest is in conservation and I’m
lucky enough to work with lots of different wildlife organizations.
I’d been fascinated by all kinds of bears, but it was the Spectacled Bear that really attracted
me. Its name comes from the yellowish fur around the bear’s eyes like glasses. It’s the only
survivor of a type of bear that once ranged across America during the last Ice Age. We thought
that it was only found in certain places in Venezuela and Chile, but some reports suggest there
might be a very small number of the bears also living in northern parts of Argentina and
eastern Panama. Their habitats can range from dry coastal deserts to high mountain areas
above 4,000 meters. It’s been estimated that there are only about 2,400 Spectacled Bears still
around. The bears are endangered not so much because they are hunted by other animals, but
what I find really sad is the fact that humans destroy their habitats.
The bears are primarily vegetarian. On rare occasions though they eat honey, which I thought
was just something in children’s books. It’s quite surprising that although they rarely eat meat
they have extremely strong jaws and wide, flat teeth.

We’re really trying to make people more aware of the bears. I hope everyone will support our
efforts to help these fascinating creatures!
