Growing up in Saudi Arabia, 44-year-old photographer Jody MacDonald has always had a strong interest in the desert. “I have always wanted to spend some time in the Sahara,” MacDonald said. “There are still so many unexplored areas in the Sahara Desert. These relatively unexplored places are so rare these days and hold the very fundamentals of exploration, which attract me. So finally I made the journey.” MacDonald started her journey in Mauritania’s capital city Nouakchott, and headed inland where she and her team jumped on the world’s longest cargo train（货运列车） for a 435-mile journey on the Mauritania Railway. “The train was dirty and uncomfortable but it was such an interesting and unique way to travel through the vast desert by train,” said MacDonald.
MacDonald and her group had to face many challenges on their journey. Except for the dirt and discomfort, the travellers also had to deal with the intense heat, violent winds and even dangerous sandstorms. “I was out taking photographs and within minutes, the wind increased to more than 100 miles an hour,” MacDonald said. “I thought my skin was going to be torn off because of the rain and blowing sand. It felt like sandpaper on my skin. I have never experienced winds that strong before. There was once a time when I wanted to give up.”
She dealt with the harsh（恶劣的） conditions by trying not to travel in the middle of the day and wore headscarves to protect herself from the sun and blowing sand. “The weather definitely dictates when and where you travel,” said MacDonald. Even with all the challenges, the photographer managed to record amazing images of the beautiful but harsh landscapes of Mauritania, and its fascinating cultures and communities.

“In high school, I decided to stop eating meat. I love animals. I couldn’t see them suffering,” Babulski says, who is a biologist at Monroe Community College in New York. Teenage Babulski initially lived on starches（淀粉食物） and salads. Eventually she learned to eat a more balanced vegetarian（素食者的） diet. But, Babulski remembers, her mum still wished she’d give up the madness. Mum thought she was going to straight up die.
The decision by Babulski and others to go vegetarian can be threatening to those who view eating animals as typically American. Eating meat is the norm in the United States, even though medical experts have long encouraged people to eat less processed and red meat for health reasons. What is becoming clear is that a meat-heavy diet is also terrible for the planet.
Shifting demand from meat to beans, whole grains, fruits, vegetables and nuts could have many benefits for the climate. A more recent April report from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the IPCC, suggests that the world’s wealthiest individuals could greatly decrease emissions（排放） through lifestyle changes. That’s because households with incomes in the top 10 percent produce roughly 36 to 45 percent of global emissions, while households with incomes in the bottom 50 percent contribute just 13 to 15 percent. Therefore, wealthier individuals, who adopt a low-carbon lifestyle, can help establish new, more sustainable social norms.
Babulski learned about the environmental impacts of meat production. She now shares her personal journey with students in her environmental science course. Many of her students come to realize the power of their individual choices. The little things they do actually do add up and make a difference.

As we enjoy the summer ocean waves along the beaches, we may think nervously about Steven Spielberg’s Jaws and the great fear that sharks inspire in us.
Yet we are happy to see global efforts to protect the declining number of sharks. The world has realized that we need the species, like sharks, to keep a balanced ecosystem. Sharks, in particular, are “in” these days. Thanks to good public policy and famous stars such as Jackie Chan and Ang Lee, killing sharks for fin（鳍） soup is no longer cool.
The demand for shark fi ns has been rising for decades, threatening sharks with extinction （灭绝）—up to 100 million sharks are killed each year just for their fins. But we have started to reverse the trend（趋势）, particularly in many areas of the United States and overseas where restaurants once proudly provided delicious shark fins on the menu.
In California, a ban on the sale and possession of shark fin soup has gone into effect this year through the efforts of Wild Aid and other organizations. Overseas marketing and public efforts featuring posters on public transportation systems and TV ads have been underway for the past few years. These efforts all show signs of success, on both the supply side and the demand side of trade in shark fins.
Actually, stopping the killing of sharks is part of a broader movement to stop the killing of wild animals and the buying and selling of wildlife products. These products come from hunting elephants, tigers and rhinos, besides killing sea life. Whether it is shark fi n soup or ivory piano keys, killing animals is big business. The hunting of elephants in search of ivory tusks for luxury（奢侈的） goods has become a war. The decrease of African elephant populations is alarming. Together with international partners, the United States is leading the worldwide effort to reduce demand for high-end products that rely on killing animals.

Like any other English learner, I met a lot of difficulties in learning English.
First, I found it difficult to understand what I read because most English words have more than one meaning. Besides, I found it difficult to write in idiomatic English or put Chinese into idiomatic English.
But I didn’t lose heart in removing these obstacles. I tackled English vocabulary in two ways. First, I tried to understand and memorize the specific meaning of a word that appeared in the context. Second, I enlarged my vocabulary by learning the dictionary by heart. In this way, I have made rapid progress in English.

There are plenty of mysteries of this planet. One of them that have been explained, however, is the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle. The Bermuda Triangle is an area between three points in the Atlantic Ocean that create a triangle. It has been said that throughout history, many ships and boats have gone missing there, never to be found again. It was first mentioned by a famous explorer in the 1400s, who said he saw a“great ball of fire”in the ocean. It was again referred to by the famous writer Shakespeare in the 1600s, in one of his books. But it didn’t become a popular story until 1918, when an American ship disappeared in the area with 300 men on board. So why have there been all these reports of missing planes and ships Luckily, today we know the real answer. First, the area is well-known for stormy waters and bad weather. Second, many inexperienced sailors have gotten lost because of poor sailing equipment and the lack of fuel. And finally, accidents are common in the sea. So, if you are planning to take a boat ride through the area, just make sure to be safe!
