When my son was eleven years old, he came home from school in tears one day. A couple of the older kids bullied (欺负) him at the bus stop. Rob wanted to stay home from school, so he wouldn’t have to meet the boys.
We called the school. “We’ll be happy to call the boys’ parents,” We were told, “And you should call the police.” “We don’t know what we will do yet.” I said. I felt that calling the police was a choice to be used when everything else failed, and I wanted first to consider other ways of dealing with the situation, I asked him to hold off calling the boys’ parents.
The next day was Saturday. Rob happened to look our of the window and said in fer, “There are the boys who beat me up!” Two older boys were standing in front of our house, as if they were waiting for Rob to step outside.
My wife Bev opened the door and said with a smile, “Hi guys. Would you like some ice cream ” They looked at each other in puzzlement. But they were teenagers, after all, so one of them said, “Sure. Why not ”
Bev quickly introduced herself, Rob’s younger brothers and me. She even introduced Rusty, the dog. “And I think you already know Rob,” She said. Her idea was to help them to see that Rob was a person, not a target. He had a family and even owned a family pet.
Bev drew the boys into chat while we ate ice cream. After a few minutes, she said, “I know there’s been some trouble at the bus stop. I think there may be a misunderstanding.” They nodded that there had indeed been trouble at the bus stop. She continued, “Maybe we can talk about the misunderstanding, so you can be friends.” We talked until the ice cream was finished. Finally the boys apologized.
Understanding is a difficult task. It may be easier to control conflict by force than to find a way to cooperate. Force can calm a situation. But understanding leads to peace.

When we think of a generation gap we usually think of conflicting tastes in music, or pastimes. But now the generation gap is handwriting. After one teacher in Tennessee discovered that she had students who couldn’t read the assignments she was writing on the board, she posted it on the Internet saying handwriting should be taught in schools.
Opponents claim that handwriting has become out of time in our modern world. Typed words have become a primary form of communication. Once a practical skill, handwriting is no longer used by the vast majority of Americans. It is no longer taught in schools, and some claim that the time that it would take to teach it could be put to better use, for instance, by teaching the technical skills.
But even in today’s world there are still plenty of reasons to pick up a pen and apply it to paper. Many American institutions still require original signatures, for instance, signing for a registered letter and buying a house. And original signatures are much more difficult to forge(伪造)than their digital counterparts. There is also strong evidence that writing by hand is good for the mind. It activates a different part of the brain, and improves fine moving skills in young children. People also tend to remember what they write by hand more than what they type, and the process of writing by hand has been shown to stimulate ideas. Not only that, studies have shown that kids who write by hand learn to read and spell earlier than those who don’t. Not to mention, handwriting is pleasing, as is evidenced by the fact that no one has ever typed a love letter. And handwriting remains popular as an art form.
Yes we live in a modern world, but we live in a modern world that is based on fundamental values.
8. What did the teacher find in her class
A. Her students had a big generation gap with her.
B. Her handwriting was too terrible to understand.
C. Some students could not recognize her handwriting on the blackboard.
D. Some students’ handwriting on the blackboard was too difficult to tell.
9. Why do some people agree to teach handwriting in school
A. Handwriting is very easy to remember.
B. Handwriting is beneficial to the brain.
C. Handwriting can help one buy a house.
D. Handwriting is an art form out of time.
10. What can we infer from the passage
A. What people write by hand is not easy to fake.
B. Lovers often write love letters to each other.
C. Handwriting is unnecessary in our modern society.
D. Technical skills are more important than handwriting.
11 What is the authors attitude towards teaching handwriting in school
A. Opposed. B. Objective.
C. Unconcerned. D. Supportive.
D
Birds are becoming popular as pets, but unlike owners with more common pets, owners of birds are often not familiar with the behavioural patterns (行为模式) of the animal which allow them to recognise what the pet needs and wants. For example, most of us can recognise the behaviour a dog exhibits when he is hungry or wants attention, but how many of us know how birds go about showing the same feelings
By learning about the behavioural patterns of the bird, his owner can forge a stronger relationship with the pet. Owners can learn how to read birds’ body language, including movements of the eyes, wings, tail and beak (喙). In addition, the sounds the bird makes can also show the mood, desires, and requirements of the pet.
A bird’s eyes are different from a human’s. While both birds and humans have pupils (瞳孔) and irises (虹膜), birds have the ability to control the size of their pupils by enlarging and reducing their irises quickly. This behaviour, flashing, is something birds may do when they are angry, interested, or frightened.
A bird also communicates through the use of his wings. A bird may lift or open his wings as a sign of happiness. But if the bird starts opening and closing his wings, it may signal anger or pain. If a bird fails to fold his wings against his body, and instead lets them hang by his sides, the bird may be ill. Healthy adult birds will typically tuck (折起) their wings against their bodies when they are at rest.
Birds often use their tail feathers to communicate, so an understanding of this behaviour will help the pet’s owner. A bird may move his tail from side to side, called wagging, to express happiness (similar to dogs in behaviour and meaning). Happiness is also the emotion expressed by other kinds of tail movements, such as moving up and down. However, if a bird fans his tail feathers out, it is usually a way to show anger or aggression.
12 What can we know about birds according to Paragraph 1
A. They have little body language.
B. They are easy to escape from owners.
C. They aren’t familiar to their owners.
D. Their behaviour is hard to understand.
13. What does the underlined word “forge” mean in Paragraph 2
A. Develop. B. Miss. C. Pretend. D. Copy.
14. What is the author likely to write about after the last paragraph
A. The sounds of birds.
B. The role of the bird’s beak in communication.
C. Tips on feeding a bird as a pet.
D. The birds,habit of singing.
15. Which of the following is the best title
A. The Birds’ Body language B. The Performance of a Bird
C. How to Communicate with Pets D. The Early Bird Catches the Worm

And original signatures are much more difficult to forge(伪造)than their digital counterparts. 故选A。根据第三段内容as is evidenced by the fact that no one has ever typed a love letter. But even in today’s world there are still plenty of reasons to pick up a pen and apply it to paper.以及下文陈述手写的优点和益处可知,现代社会也需要学习手写,故C错误;根据第二段的句子some claim that the time that it would take to teach it could be put to better use, for instance, by teaching the technical skills.
But if the bird starts opening and closing his wings it may signal anger or pain.
12. What can we know about birds according to Paragraph 1

根据第一段中“For example, most of us can recognise the behaviour a dog exhibits when he is hungry or wants attention, but how many of us know how birds go about showing the same feelings (例如,我们大多数人都能认出狗在饥饿或需要关注时所表现出的行为,但我们有多少人知道鸟类是如何表现出同样的感觉的?)”
根据划线词上文“By learning about the behavioural patterns of the bird(通过了解鸟类的行为模式)”以及后文“a stronger relationship with the pet(与宠物建立更牢固的关系)”可知,通过了解鸟类的行为模式,主人应该是与鸟建立起更牢固的关系。 故选A。
根据第二段中的“Owners can learn how to read birds’ body language, including movements of the eyes, wings, tail and beak (喙).(主人可以学习如何解读鸟类的肢体语言,包括眼睛、翅膀、尾巴和喙的动作)”可知,本文将从乌的眼睛、翅膀、尾巴和鸟嘴这几个部分来阐释说明,结合第三段中“A bird’s eyes are different from a human’s.(鸟的眼睛和人的眼睛不一样)”;第四段中“A bird also communicates through the use of his wings.(一只鸟也通过使用他的翅膀进行交流)”以及第五段“Birds often use their tail feathers to communicate, so an understanding of this behaviour will help the pet’s owner.(鸟类经常使用它们的尾羽进行交流,因此了解这种行为将有助于宠物的主人)”可知,上文分别讲述了鸟的眼睛、翅膀和尾巴的动作,故可推知,接下来应该讲鸟嘴的动作的相关信息。
根据第二段“By learning about the behavioural patterns of the bird, his owner can forge a stronger relationship with the pet. Owners can learn how to read birds’ body language, including movements of the eyes, wings, tail and beak (喙). In addition, the sounds the bird makes can also show the mood, desires, and requirements of the pet.( 通过了解鸟的行为模式,它的主人可以与宠物建立更牢固的关系。主人可以学习如何阅读鸟类的肢体语言,包括眼睛、翅膀、尾巴和喙的动作。此外,鸟发出的声音也可以显示宠物的情绪,欲望和要求)”结合文章主要介绍鸟通过不同的肢体语言来表明情绪,故A选项“鸟类的肢体语言”最符合文章标题。故选A。
Going to outer space is a little like going camping. Food with all the water dried out is lightweight and doesn’t spoil(变坏). So, many space foods are dried on Earth and stored in special packets.___16___
On Earth, gravity is the force that keeps your feet on the ground and your sandwich on your plate.___17___. To keep food from floating(漂浮) away, astronauts on the Space Shuttle attach the packets to a special tray(托盘). The tray can be fixed to a wall or to the astronaut’s lap. To prepare their food, astronauts use liquid forms of salt and pepper. The liquid sticks to the food better. Regular salt and pepper would float away, maybe up an astronaut’s nose.
___18___So astronauts drink everything from a small bag with a straw(吸管) that can be closed. Astronauts say that most space foods taste pretty good.
Some, such as apples and pudding, are the same as the foods you eat on Earth. Astronauts eat tortillas instead of bread because they make fewer crumbs(碎屑).___19___.Your body uses food in space the same way it does on Earth. Your body must deal with waste in space too.
During take-off and landing, astronauts can’t leave their seats to go to the bathroom. They wear diapers(尿布) under their spacesuits instead. The Space Shuttle has a bathroom the size of a small closet. The toilet has bars that keep astronauts from floating away. ___20___
A. Liquids float right out of cups and glasses, though.
B. But there’s no gravity in space.
C. In outer space, everything seems to be different.
D. Rubbish from daily life can not be thrown everywhere.
E. Some, such as dried pears, taste good right out of the packet.
F. Floating crumbs could get stuck in equipment or an astronaut’s eye
G. A strong flow of air is used instead of water to flush waste down the toilet.
E 17. B 18. A 19. F 20. G

E项“Some, such as dried pears, taste good right out of the packet.(有些,比如干梨,直接拿出来吃味道很好)”承接上文“So, many space foods are dried on Earth and stored in special packets.(因此,许多太空食品在地球上干燥并储存在特殊的包装中) ”,描述了脱水太空食物特点,与上文构成顺承关系,其中“dried pears、packet”与上文内容照应。故选E项。
上文“On Earth, gravity is the force that keeps your feet on the ground and your sandwich on your plate.(在地球上,地心引力是使你的脚保持在地面上,三明治保持在盘子里的力量)”讲地球引力让食物呆在盘子里,下文“To keep food from floating(漂浮) away, astronauts on the Space Shuttle attach the packets to a special tray(托盘). (为了防止食物飘走,航天飞机上的宇航员将这些包裹装在一个特殊的托盘上)”说太空中要用特殊托盘来防止食物飞走,两句有转折对比关系,B 项“But there’s no gravity in space.(但是在太空中没有重力)”说明原因,承上启下。故选B项。
【18题详解】
根据句中连词so(所以)可知上下文有因果关系,A项“Liquids float right out of cups and glasses, though.(不过,液体会直接从杯子和玻璃杯里浮出来)”是下文“So astronauts drink everything from a small bag with a straw(吸管) that can be closed.(所以宇航员喝任何东西都用一个小袋子,里面有一根可以关闭的吸管)”的原因。故选A项。
F项“Floating crumbs could get stuck in equipment or an astronaut’s eye(漂浮的面包屑可能会卡在设备或宇航员的眼睛里)”是对上文“Astronauts eat tortillas instead of bread because they make fewer crumbs(宇航员吃玉米饼而不吃面包,因为玉米屑更少) ”宇航员不吃面包的进一步解释,句中crumbs与上文照应。故选F项。
上文“The toilet has bars that keep astronauts from floating away. (马桶上有栅栏,防止宇航员飘走)”讲的是卫生间里的设施,G项“A strong flow of air is used instead of water to flush waste down the toilet.(用一股强劲的气流代替水将垃圾冲下厕所)”承接上文,内容相关,句中toilet与上文照应。故选G项。

With the development of the internet, making friends on line is becoming increasingly popular. But there is a widespread concern over the issue whether middle school students should make friends on line. Different people have different opinions.
Some students say making friends on line is their favorite. They think that the Internet helps them make more friends. And chatting on line, students can more freely express their feelings and opinions. Besides, they may even get help with their foreign language studies.
Others, however, think students should not make friends on line. They say making friends on line is a waste of time. And they should spend time more meaningfully on study. In addition, some students get cheated on line.
It is my opinion that students should place their study, health and safety before other things. As for friendship, we can easily find it in our classmates and other people around us.
