The Denton Black Film Festival(DBFF) is the brainchild of Harry Eaddy, the festival director, and is presented by the Denton African American Scholarship Foundation. Several years ago, Harry Eaddy approached two important men of the Denton community—Cheylon Brown and Mesha George—with a unique idea to bring
an event focused on Black cinema to the region. DBFF was set up in order to deal with the problem that films are insufficiently represented by giving Black stories an audience and Black creatives a platform. The festival has expanded to the Denton Black Film Festival Institute and serves filmmakers and creatives of all backgrounds.
WHEN
January 27-February 6
DETAILS
The DBFF returned this January with this virtual festival. Built around amazing cinema, the festival is unique from many others in that it also features music, a technology expo, spoken word/poetry, art and more. This festival celebrates the diverse stories and culture of Black community through film, music and art. Storytelling is the core of any culture. Stories are how traditions, ideas and experiences are shared and passed down from one generation to the next. DBFF is a platform for stories about Black lives, Black culture and Black experiences to be shared, told and lived.
The DBFF creates a space where:
· a minority culture can be a majority experience
· stories on the margins (边缘) are given center stage
· the Black experience is valued and celebrated
Denton, a rapidly evolving art and culture hotbed, provides the perfect backdrop (背景) for DBFF on its path to building community, celebrating culture, but most importantly, sharing stories.
The festival features narratives, documentaries, and shorts submitted by filmmakers nationwide and internationally. More is to be announced... Now is the perfect time to purchase tickets. Please click / film-festival.

When 19-year-old Emily Bhatnagar from Maryland, USA, found her father had stage four thyroid (甲状腺) cancer, her response was different from what you might expect. To honour her father, who she also described as her best friend, she decided to start a book drive called For Love and Buttercup, collecting books for kids with cancer.
“It was very much an overnight idea,” she explained. “I posted a message on an app called Nextdoor asking my neighbors to donate used books. I was only expecting a few here and there, but the response was truly incredible and it was just the push I needed to co-exist with my grief (悲伤) rather than letting it consume me.”
“It was absolutely heartbreaking to watch my dad go through cancer and see him lose a little bit of himself each day, but the book drive allowed me to develop a new-found sense of purpose intertwined (交织) with a greater sense of compassion to help others in any form. I wanted to help kids. They’ve always held a soft spot in my heart.”
Using tips she earned from working at her parents’ bread shop, Emily bought many books out of her own pocket. In addition, she received donations through her Amazon wishlist, which can be found in the bio (简介) of the book drive’s Instagram account, @forloveandbuttercup.
Emuly and her older brother spent a whole summer driving around town, loading boxes of books into their car. “It was such a privilege to know people had carried these books all their lives through generations, and they wanted to gift it to my cause.”
For Love and Buttercup has donated over 15,000 books to sick children and it is being recognised by The Washington Post, Forbes, The President’s Volunteer Service Award and Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation.
24.What did Emily do knowing her father’s disease
A.She turned to books for help. B.She tried to help her father recover.

We are unavoidably linked to the ocean. Collectively, it covers about 71% of our world and is instrumental in the processes that keep us alive. While the rainforests may be referred to as “the lungs of the planet”, scientists say it’s actually the ocean that provides 50% — 80% of the oxygen we breathe. Besides, through a “conveyor belt” action, it helps regulate Earth’s climate by transporting heat away from the equator, towards the poles to cool. The ocean also proves itself essential in the fight against climate change too. It absorbs 50 times more carbon dioxide than our atmosphere-or rather, it’s not the ocean itself but what lives in it. And perhaps one of the most incredible forms is the humble seagrass.
Across the globe, there are more than 70 species of seagrass, growing in shallow and sheltered coastal areas and covering 300,000 square kilometres, which absorbs 10% of the ocean’s carbon each year and captures carbon up to 35 times faster than tropical rainforests. Seagrass builds its leaves and roots using carbon, which it extracts from water through the process of photosynthesis (光合作用) — and it holds on to it, even after death. Dead plant material decomposes (分解) slowly on the ocean floor, and this means that the carbon stored within is eventually buried under the seabed.
Significant as it is, seagrass is critically endangered. According to the U. N. Environment Programme, a seagrass area the size of a football pitch is destroyed every 30 minutes around the world. Fortunately, restoration missions are already underway, in places as far afield as Kenya, Mozambique, and the UK. But rising temperatures remain a twofold threat: an increase in storms that tear the shallow-rooted seagrass from its beds, and rising sea-levels that block out the sunlight.
However, seagrass is known to adapt to survive-and gene sequencing of the Zostera marina seagrass has shown it has done so on three separate occasions already. Could it be one of Earth’s great survivors that will save us all Only time will tell.
28.How does the seagrass help regulate Earth’s climate
A.It blocks out the sunlight. B.It absorbs carbon dioxide.
C.It provides most of the oxygen. D.It transports heat towards the poles.
29.What does the underlined word “extracts” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Obtains. B.Replaces. C.Consumes. D.Delivers.
30.What can be inferred about the seagrass from the last two paragraphs
A.It is no longer endangered after restoration.
B.It has saved the planet from climate change.
C.It hasn’t been affected by rising temperatures.
D.It is able to adapt to changes in its environment.
31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.The Fantastic World of Seagrass B.The Uncertain Future of the Ocean
C.Seagrass: The Ocean’s Unsung Hero D.The Battle to Save Seagrass from Extinction
D
Globally, about 192.1 million animals are used annually for experimental purposes. Iran has conducted animal-based research dating back to the time of Ibn Sina. Although, like many countries, Iran regulates the use and treatment of laboratory animals, it lacks sufficient enforcement. To ensure ethical treatment of research animals, Iran needs better data about their use, and institutions and individuals need to take responsibility for their care.
Iran’s Ministry of Health, which oversees animal testing, requires all animals are treated according to international ethical standards. However, some institutions that produce or use animals provide substandard treatment, disregarding the ministry’s guidelines. To facilitate better enforcement of established regulations, Iran needs clear, accurate and reliable information about the quantity of animals used in research. All Iranian research institutions that use animals should be required to collect and report annual data on the number of animals they use, the conditions in which the animals are kept, and the animals’ research purpose. Such data would allow Iran to track each institution’s adherence (遵守) to the “3Rs”of animal research: Replacing animal-based experiments with alternative strategies, reducing the number of animals used, and refining techniques to minimize the pain and discomfort research animals experience.
In addition to government enforcement, individual institutions should prioritize the replacement, reduction, and refinement of animal use. Iran’s medical schools and research institutions should establish an accessible database with comprehensive experimental details to prevent excessive animal studies. Ethics committees shouldn’t approve experiments that use more animals than necessary or methods that require animals when alternative methods are available. In some cases, technical sampling (using a small sample size) can replace experimental sampling (using a relatively large sample size).
Individuals should also take an active role. All researchers must be trained to adhere to ethical principles and understand unnecessary pain or discomfort in animals could affect the interpretation of data.
Maintaining international ethical standards for animal treatment is vital for Iran to establish its global
standing in the field of medical sciences. Iran’s government, institutions, individual scientists, and public can work together to ensure ethical animal research.
32.What is the main idea of paragraph 1
A.The origin of Iran’s animal-based research.
B.The regulations of Iran’s research into animals.
C.The development of Iran’s animal-based research.
D.Moral concerns for Iran’s research animals’ welfare.
33.Why does Iran need better data about the use of research animals
A.To follow the ministry’s guidelines.
B.To be in control of animal-based research.
C.To ensure the adherence to the “3Rs” in animal-based research.
D.To replace animal-based experiments with alternative strategies.
34.Why should a database with overall experimental details be established
A.To follow government regulations.
B.To reduce unnecessary animal-based studies.
C.To make research more visible to the public.
D.To ensure the accuracy of experimental results.
35.What is the main purpose of the text
A.To encourage cooperation for ethical animal-based research in Iran.
B.To promote the use of an accessible experimental database in Iran.
C.To highlight ethics committees’ role in animal-based research in Iran.
D.To stress international ethical standards in animal-based research in Iran.

Loud noise can be very damaging to your hearing, whether it’s a loud burst or years of exposure. Approximately 15 percent of adults 18 years of age or older report some trouble hearing. 36 The good news is that taking action now may protect you from hearing loss later in life.
Get a baseline hearing test. Most people have never had a hearing test. 37 At your next physical, ask for a hearing test as part of your routine checkup. A hearing test gives your audiologist a baseline that they can compare with future results to monitor the progression of hearing loss.
38 While you are watching TV or using mobile devices, keep the volume at a comfortable level. It should be loud enough to make sure you can hear very well, but not so loud that when you leave the room, you can still hear it from another part of your home.
Wear protective hearing devices. Think ear protection before you’re exposed to any noisy environment, such as rock concerts or airports. When you are in a noisy environment, wear protective hearing devices such as earplugs or protective earphones. 39
Have proper earphones. If you often listen to music on earphones using a portable music or video device, it’s a good idea to have earphones that fit the unique shape of your ear canal, and block outside noise. 40
A.The risk rises as we age.
B.Monitor the volume of your devices.
C.However, it benefits you to go against that trend.

For me, growth begins immediately after I am able to accept my mistakes and admit team efforts.
When I was elected president of student union, campus officials congratulated me saying I was quite adequate for the job. Before long, we had built a community of people who liked climbing the mountain near our campus. We started out with a small group of hikers, and then the number of participants increased.
One day on campus, I met a woman in a wheelchair called Grace. I asked her if she had ever been to the top of the mountain. She said she hadn’t and she would never. I told her to stay positive and not to give up admiring the beauty of the summit. Grace agreed to have a go. We all took turns grabbing a corner of her chair as we carried her 1. 7 miles to the top. This was probably one of the most magical and deeply meaningful things I did in college.
With the support of my community and hikers, no one was surprised that I had won the election. The first thing I did as president was hang a sign outside the Associated Students office that read, “Under New Management!” I was proud of my coming accomplishment.
Absolute power changed me absolutely. My ego, my arrogance and my pride were out of control. I began speaking down to people, demanding they listen to me because I thought I knew what was best. Seldom did I join the hikers to climb the mountain, arguing it was a waste of time. My friends and supporters tried to communicate to me that I had changed, that I was abusing my position, but I wasn’t listening.
A public conflict with the female vice president about where to build a coffeehouse opened the floodgates for others who were upset with me. They claimed that I had made wrong decisions and that I was unqualified for the job. “Resign! Resign!” the posters of their requests would soon be everywhere on campus. My whole world collapsed. I couldn’t figure out why a wonderfully enriching experience as president suddenly turned into one of my worst nightmares.

Several days later, I caught sight of a familiar figure in the wheelchair, peering at my poster.

【原文】Dear journal, I’ve been trapped on this island for two months and can only keep track of the days by my markings in a cave. I’ve entirely given up hope on getting rescued by a plane. The aircraft that fly by are much too infrequent and far away to be of any help. Also, in this part of the Indian Ocean, there is no one on the island. I’ve searched this island far and wide, and I’m forced to eat mushrooms, insects, and small fish. Luckily, there are enough coconuts to last a lifetime. I’m writing this to feel like I have contact with someone due to months without outside communication. I escaped the massive violent conflict in my country in the South Pacific, and I sought help from India. There, I’d be taken in and could legally settle in a different country. If it wasn’t for facing the random typhoon while crossing the Andaman Sea, I would have made it,
even if my boat wasn’t perfect. There was nothing I could have done to prevent this storm. The primary issue now is lacking any method of contacting emergency support. My satellite phone is unreliable and has now proven to be of no use at all. My hope now is to find a wood supply to get my boat functioning again. If not, I’ll have to face my greatest panic: being stuck on this island forever.

25.推理判断题。根据第二段“but the response was truly incredible and it was just the push I needed to co-exist with my grief (悲伤) rather than letting it consume me.”(但反响真的很好,这正是我需要与悲伤共存的动力,而不是让它吞噬我。)可推断,邻居们对 Emily发起的旧书捐赠活动的反应让她受到了鼓舞。故选A。

【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了海草的重要性——能够通过吸收碳来帮助调节气候。
28.细节理解题。根据第一段“It absorbs 50 times more carbon dioxide than our atmosphere-or rather, it’s not the ocean itself but what lives in it. And perhaps one of the most incredible forms is the humble seagrass.(海洋吸收的二氧化碳是大气的50倍——或者说,吸收二氧化碳的不是海洋本身,而是海洋中的生物。也许最令人难以置信的形式之一是不起眼的海草)”和第二段中的“Across the globe, there are more than 70 species of seagrass, growing in shallow and sheltered coastal areas and covering 300,000 square kilometres, which absorbs 10% of the ocean’s
carbon each year and captures carbon up to 35 times faster than tropical rainforests.(在全球范围内,有70多种海草生长在浅海和有遮蔽的沿海地区,面积达30万平方公里,每年吸收10%的海洋碳,捕获碳的速度是热带雨林的35倍)”可知,海草能够通过吸收二氧化碳来帮助调节气候,故选B。
29.词句猜测题。根据第二段“Seagrass builds its leaves and roots using carbon, which it extracts from water through the process of photosynthesis (光合作用)-and it holds on to it, even after death. (海草利用碳来使叶子和根茁壮生长,碳是通过光合作用从水中extract出的——并且即使在它死后,它也能抓住碳)”可知,先extract才能hold on to,故extract指“提取、获得”,故选A。
30.推理判断题。根据最后一段“However, seagrass is known to adapt to survive-and gene sequencing of the Zostera marina seagrass has shown it has done so on three separate occasions already.(然而,海草已知能够适应生存——并且对大叶藻海草的基因测序表明,它已经在三个不同的场合都这样做了)”可推测,海草具备适应周边环境的变化并生存下来的能力,故选D。
31.主旨大意题。根据全文可知,本文的主体对象是海草,其作为海洋生态系统中的一部分,能够吸收大量的碳,有助于减缓气候变化。并结合文章结尾处“Could it be one of Earth’s great survivors that will save us all Only time will tell.(难道它是能拯救我们所有人的地球上最伟大的幸存者之一吗?只有时间才能证明)”可知,文章的写作重点是海草对于调节气候变化的贡献,C选项“海草:海洋的无名英雄”最符合文章标题。故选C。

题。故选D项。
33.推理判断题。第二段中的“Such data would allow Iran to track each institution’s adherence (遵守) to the ‘3Rs’ of animal research: Replacing animal-based experiments with alternative strategies, reducing the number of animals used, and refining techniques to minimize the pain and discomfort research animals experience.(这些数据将使伊朗能够跟踪每个机构对动物研究“3r”的遵守情况:用替代策略取代基于动物的实验,减少使用的动物数量,改进技术以尽量减少研究动物所经历的痛苦和不适。)”
根据第三段中的“Ethics committees shouldn’t approve experiments that use more animals than necessary or methods that require animals when alternative methods are available.(伦理委员会不应该批准使用过多动物的实验,或者在有替代方法的情况下需要动物的方法。)”可知,伦理委员会不应批准使用过多的动物实验,或者是用其他方法替代拿动物做研究,由此可知,建立伦理委员会的目的是减少不必要的动物实验。选B项。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Maintaining international ethical standards for animal treatment is vital for Iran to establish its global standing in the field of medical sciences. Iran’s government, institutions, individual scientists, and public can work together to ensure ethical animal research.(维持对待动物的国际道德标准对伊朗建立其在医学领域的全球地位至关重要。伊朗政府、机构、科学家个人和公众可以共同努力,确保动物研究合乎道德。)”可知,伊朗要在医学领域的全球地位,需要建立维持对待动物的国际道德标准,需要伊朗政府、机构、科学家个人和公众共同努力,由此可知,尾段的主要目标是鼓励各方合作,确保伊朗进行道德动物研究。故选A项。

67.
Several days later, I caught sight of a familiar figure in the wheelchair, peering at my poster. Feeling a warm blush burning my cheeks, I bowed my head, trying to escape her attention. But after a brief hesitation, I collected myself and edged toward her. When our eyes met, a faint smile flashed across her lips as if to comfort me. It was Grace who broke the silence, saying, firmly and affectionately, “Stay positive and never forget you are not alone.” Her words were like a warm stream flowing into my heart. Greatly inspired, I promised her I would cheer myself up and do everything I can to win back the students’ trust and respect as president.
I went to the campus lawn, began to admit my mistakes in public and promised that I had learned my lesson. Afterwards, I sprinted back to my community and sincerely apologized to them
for my arrogance and dictatorial manner before. Then, the following few weeks witnessed me cooperating with my fellows, extensively seeking advice and listening patiently to their opinions. With joint efforts, not only was the coffeehouse successfully set up, but my job as president also went smoothly. It dawned on me that only by being a humble and inclusive listener can we achieve great success.
