If you’re feeling in the mood for grilled food but don’t have a barbecue, then deciding what product to purchase can be a bit difficult. So to help you get a better understanding of just some of the choices available, here’s our guide to buying a new BBQ.
Charcoal vs Gas
The first decision is how your BBQ is going to be powered. There are essentially two main choices: the traditional way with charcoal, or the quick and convenient way with gas. For those who get frustrated with the process of lighting coals and waiting for them to reach the desired temperature, then gas is the easy option. It’s clean and gets up to temperature in an instant. But for many, the main fun of a barbecue lies in the back-to-basics cooking that hot coal brings natural barbecue fire. You’ll also find a far greater range of charcoal barbecues.
Size
For anyone who likes to throw a garden party with a busy barbecue at the centre of the action, there are some vast grills (烤架) available. But unless you’re regularly feeding the masses, then these BBQ beasts can be impractical. Smaller meals are better suited to smaller equipment, so be realistic about the size that best suits you.
Open grill or lid
While facing the barbecue selection of your nearest retailer, you’ll notice that some of them have lids. These will usually be round and will make you pay more than the lidless options. But if you want the benefit of being able to cook larger items over a longer period of time, such as a whole chicken, then a lid will be essential.
1. Which BBQ is suitable for Jack, who likes back-to-basics cooking and often invites friends to the garden party

Yesterday we said goodbye to my grandfather. He was 96 years old and he was my last grandparent.
It has been a while since I saw my grandpa in person. I think he only met my youngest Lilly once. It kind of pains me to think that I deprived(剥夺)my children of the chance to know their only great-grandparent. But I didn’t want them to know or remember a very old man, incapable of getting down on his knees to play with them, and laughing with them because he can’t hear what they’re saying. That’s not the grandfather I know.
My grandfather never stopped. He was an early-adopter to have a laptop-type-device long before Apple was a houschold word and he was programming video games for grandkids to play before most people knew what programming was. He kept physically fit every day of his life. In his later years, he kept busy playing tennis, ballroom dancing, swimming, bicycling. In the end, he didn’t lose a battle to any disease. His body simply could not go on anymore.
I feel extremely thankful to have had the opportunity to know my grandfather. Intentional or not, he taught me many lessons. My grandfather taught me to waterski when I was 5 years old and he taught me how to surf about a decade after that. Whenever I thought it’s too late for me to study a language or get better at piano, he made it clear that it’s only my fear holding me back, not age.
These lessons make life meaningful to me. I prefer to think of them as lessons for living a positive life that leaves a positive impression on me. That is something I will strive to do. Thanks to my grandfather, I have a pretty good blueprint to follow. So I guess the best thing I can offer my children to feel connected to that man is the lessons I learned from him.
4. Why did the author seldom take kids to their disabled great-grandfather
A. To promote the kids’ independence.
B. To keep the old man living a quiet life.
C. To prevent the kids from being frightened.
D. To avoid the kids having a bad impression of him.
5. How could the author’s grandfather keep fit
A. By eating apples everyday. B. By playing with little kids.
C. By living a simple life. D. By keeping exercising.
6. What can we infer about the author’s grandfather from paragraph 4
A. He was a surfing instructor. B. He was very encouraging.
C. He did everything with an intention. D. He studied a new language in his old age.
7. What is the best title of the text
A. Memories of My Grandfather B. Winning a Battle to Disease
C. Connecting the Generations D. Impression of My Childhood
C
No trip to the beach would be complete without a group of hungry gulls. But be careful, because one of those gulls may soon go after your food. “There's a very small number of very daring individuals that seem to harm the reputation of the whole species.”
Neeltje Boogert, an animal behavior researcher at the University of Exeter, studied the food-snatching habits of gulls in seaside towns in the southern U.K. and found that very few-only the bravest, would actually take the food or make that the bite.
The experiment went like this: A researcher crouched near a gull, then set out a plastic bag of French fries. For those brave gulls that then started to approach, the researcher either stared straight at the gull, as in “I see you, thief,” or simply looked away. And it turned out, staring down at the gulls made them hesitate 21 seconds on average before approaching the fries.
Gulls aren't the only ones who behave better when being watched. A 2006 study found that people paid three times as much for their drinks at an unattended honor-system coffee bar when just an image of staring eyes was displayed nearby.
As for the gulls, Boogert points out that we need to learn to live with them—because the particular species she studied is on the U.K.'s Red List of Birds of Conservation Concern.
“The thing is: people don't want to have a seaside holiday without gulls there. So it's just trying to find ways to live together with one of the only wildlife species we still have around in these coastal areas.”
“So don't turn your back on the gulls,” she says. “Both seemingly for conserving the species and, of course, actually—for conserving your lunch.”
8. What does the author want to say about gulls in Paragraph l
A. People go to the beach mainly for the gulls. B. People think highly of gulls' courage.
C. Gulls have a bad reputation for wasting food. D. Gulls sometimes steal food from beach goers.
9. What is the research method used by Dr. Boogert and her team
A. Doing experiments B. Completing questionnaires.
C. Referring to documents. D. Making interviews.
10. What does the underlined word “unattended” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Not being loved. B. Not being involved.
C. Not being watched. D. Not being needed.
11. What does Dr. Boogert mean in the last paragraph
A. British people are fond of gulls. B. British people care little about gulls.
C. British people should protect gulls. D. British people should be warned of gulls.
D
You probably like blue, and you’re not alone. Across the globe, a majority of people tend to select blue as their favourite colour. A new study from University of Wisconsin found that not only do we adore blue, but we start to give meaning to colours as we age.
During the study conducted by psychology professor Karen Schloss at the University of Wisconsin in 2019, the researchers investigated the science of how different people perceive colour. They noted that subjects with a preference for a sports team found their favourite team’s colours more favourable. The more they valued their team, the more they favoured the specific colour. “It tells us that our experiences with the world are constantly influencing the way we view colour,” Schloss says.
So, why does blue dominate lists of favourites From previous surveys the researchers found that blue has been a favourite colour. Even the earliest-recorded colour studies from the 1800s show that blue is universally loved, due at least in part to our fondness for blues in nature. Many colours in nature that we love are blue, especially a blue sky, the sea and many flowers. A blue sky is enough to make many people very happy. It’s possible then, that blue offer plenty of positive experiences, which we unconsciously link to our favourite colour.
But blue isn’t the only attention-grabbing colour. The other finding of the research was that our colour interests change as we gain new experiences. The younger you are, for instance, the more likely you are to enjoy a brighter colour. As you age, you’re more likely to take on darker colours as your favourites; younger women, according to the researchers, tend to enjoy purples and reds, while younger men may lean toward green or yellow-green. The studies showed that dark yellowish-brown was the world’s least liked colour.
Simply put, the things we enjoy most in our lives will drive our colour preferences.
12. What does the underlined word “It” refer to in paragraph 2
A. The specific sports team. B. A subject’s personality.
C. People’s preference of a colour. D. The feature of colours.
13. What do the early colour studies tell us
A. Human beings are fully linked to nature.
B. Our preference for blue is longstanding.
C. It’s a coincidence that blue is our favourite.
D. Blue is associated to the sky and the sea.
14. What was the second finding of the research
A. Our colour preferences may shift over time.
B. We may prefer brighter colours as we age.
C. We tend to stick with just one colour in our lives.
D. Blue is a top choice for favourite colour in the world.
15. What can be concluded from the text
A. Older people can understand the colours better.
B. More mysteries remain to be seen about colour.
C. Colour preferences change our view of the world.
D. Colour preferences are shaped by our experiences.

D 5. D 6. B 7. A

根据第二段“It kind of pains me to think that I deprived(剥夺)my children of the chance to know their only great-grandparent. But I didn’t want them to know or remember a very old man, incapable of getting down on his knees to play with them, and laughing with them because he can’t hear what they’re saying. That’s not the grandfather I know.

根据全文尤其是最后一段“These lessons make life meaningful to me. I prefer to think of them as lessons for living a positive life that leaves a positive impression on me. So I guess the best thing I can offer my children to feel connected to that man is the lessons I learned from him.( 这些课程让我的生活变得有意义。我更愿意把它们看作是积极生活的课程,给我留下积极的印象。这是我要努力做到的。多亏了我的祖父,我有了一个很好的蓝图可以遵循。所以我想我能给我的孩子们的最好的东西就是我从他身上学到的东西。)”可知全文都是对祖父的回忆,祖父教会了我很多宝贵的东西,故A选项符合文章大意,适合做标题,故选A。

A Doing experiments B. Completing questionnaires.
C. Referring to documents. D. Making interviews.
10. What does the underlined word “unattended” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Not being loved. B. Not being involved.
C. Not being watched. D. Not being needed.
11. What does Dr. Boogert mean in the last paragraph
A. British people are fond of gulls. B. British people care little about gulls.
C. British people should protect gulls. D. British people should be warned of gulls.
D 9. A 10. C 11. C

根据第一段“No trip to the beach would be complete without a group of hungry gulls. But be careful, because one of those gulls may soon go after your food. “There's a very small number of very daring individuals that seem to harm the reputation of the whole species.”(没有一群饥饿的海鸥,海滩之旅就不完整。但要小心,因为其中一只海鸥可能很快就会盯上你的食物。“有一小部分非常大胆的个体似乎损害了整个物种的声誉。”)”可知,海鸥有时偷海滩游客的食物。故选D。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The experiment went like this: A researcher crouched near a gull, then set out a plastic bag of French fries. 词句猜测题。根据第四段中“Gulls aren't the only ones who behave better when being watched.(海鸥并不是唯一在被监视时表现更好的动物)”;画线词上文“A 2006 study found that people paid three times as much for their drinks at an”以及后文“when just an image of staring eyes was displayed nearby”可知,人类和海鸥一样,被监视时表现更好,所以2006年的一项研究发现,如果在一个无人看管的荣誉系统咖啡吧,旁边只放一张瞪着的眼睛的图片,人们就会花三倍的钱买饮料。故画线词意思是“无人看管的”。故选C。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““So don't turn your back on the gulls,” she says. “Both seemingly for conserving the species and, of course, actually—for conserving your lunch.”(“所以不要对海鸥置之不理,”她说。“这似乎是为了保护物种,当然,实际上也是为了保护你午餐。”)”可知,Boogert博士在最后一段中的意思是英国人应该保护海鸥。故选C。
C 13. B 14. A 15. D

根据第三段“From previous surveys the researchers found that blue has been a favourite colour. Even the earliest-recorded colour studies from the 1800s show that blue is universally loved, due at least in part to our fondness for blues in nature. (从之前的调查中,研究人员发现蓝色一直是人们最喜欢的颜色。即使是19世纪最早记录的色彩研究也表明,蓝色受到普遍喜爱,至少部分原因是我们喜欢大自然中的蓝色。)”并结合前文可知,之前的调查中,研究人员发现蓝色一直是人们最喜欢的颜色。由此推断,从早期的颜色研究中我们可以发现:我们对蓝色的偏爱由来已久。故选B。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“The other finding of the research was that our colour interests change as we gain new experiences. The younger you are, for instance, the more likely you are to enjoy a brighter colour. As you age, you’re more likely to take on darker colours as your favourites (该研究的另一个发现是,当我们获得新的经验时,我们对颜色的兴趣也会发生变化。例如,你越年轻,你就越有可能喜欢鲜艳的颜色。随着年龄的增长,你更有可能选择深色作为自己的最爱)”可知,这项研究的第二个发现是我们对颜色的偏好可能会随着时间的推移而改变。故选A。
根据最后一段“Simply put, the things we enjoy most in our lives will drive our colour preferences. (简单地说,我们生活中最喜欢的东西会影响我们对颜色的偏好。)”可推断,我们对颜色的偏爱是由我们的经历体验决定的。故选D。

【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了体验一种新的文化的好处。
【16题详解】
上文“Often the best way to really explore a new place and culture is by spending abundant time there. A quick vacation may give you a glimpse(警) into your destination. (通常,真正探索一个新的地方和文化的最好方法是在那里度过大量的时间。短暂度假可以让你对目的地有个初步了解。)”提出探索一个新的地方和文化的最好方法是在那里度过大量的时间,短暂度假只能让你对目的地有个初步了解,G项“But experiences like student or work exchange programs allow you to immerse(沉浸) in a new culture(但是像学生或工作交换项目这样的经历可以让你沉浸在一种新的文化中。)”
上文“Culture shock is a response to your new surroundings when abroad that can leave you confused, anxious and feeling lonely. It generally includes frustration at how even the simplest things can be different in the new culture. The thing is though, culture shock can be seen as a problem but also as an opportunity. (文化冲击是你在国外对新环境的一种反应,它会让你困惑、焦虑和感到孤独。它通常包括对新文化中即使是最简单的事情也会有所不同的挫败感。问题是,文化冲击既可以被视为一个问题,也可以被视为一个机会。)”介绍了什么是文化冲击,结合段首标题“Dealing with culture shock(应对文化冲击)”可知本段最终要说明如果应对文化冲击,F项“Only by adjusting to and accepting new surroundings can you understand and appreciate it (只有适应和接受新的环境,你才能理解和欣赏它。)”给出应对文化冲击的办法“by adjusting to and accepting new surroundings”,照应主题。
根据下文“Perhaps the most obvious lesson learned with travel is the importance of language. Even just learning the basics of the local language can make getting about and making new friends easier. Trying to overcome the language barrier also teaches you about non-verbal communication. Since you can’t rely on what is being said, you learn to adapt, to people’s tone and body language. This makes you a better communicator. (也许从旅行中学到的最明显的教训就是语言的重要性。即使只是学习当地语言的基本知识也能让你更容易走动和结交新朋友。努力克服语言障碍还能教会你非语言交流。因为你不能依赖别人说的话,你要学会适应别人的语气和肢体语言。这会让你成为一个更好的沟通者。)”可知,本段主要介绍语言对体验新文化的重要性。所以A项“Learning language skills (学习语言技能)”是最佳主题句。故选A。
根据后文“In each of these creative fields you may come across new approaches or elements that you bring home with you; maybe it’s a certain combination of ingredients that you add to your cooking or a new style you adopt for your own home’s design. (在这些创造性的领域中,你可能会遇到新的方法或元素,你带回家;也许是你在烹饪中添加的某种食材组合,或者是你为自己的家庭设计采用的一种新风格。)”可知,本段介绍通过当地的艺术、美食、建筑等方面来体验新的文化。所以E项“Experiencing the local culture can expose you to local art, cuisine, architecture, etc. (体验当地文化可以让你接触到当地的艺术、美食、建筑等。)”符合上下文语境。故选E。
【20题详解】
根据前句“Meeting people and making friends while overseas is both a necessity and one of the most enjoyable aspects of the experience. (在海外结识朋友是必要的,也是最令人愉快的经历之一。)”和后半句“which enables you to meet people that you never would have known otherwise. (它能让你认识一些你以前永远不会认识的人。)”可知,通过社交,结交朋友是体验新文化的好方法。所以D项“Travelling to new cultures is a great way to expand your social circle (到新的文化中旅行是扩大你的社交圈的好方法,)”符合上下文语境。故选D。
