It’s not an easy thing to speak out how we really feel sometimes. An English teacher from Fremont, California thought of a creative way to help her students express their feelings.
Erin Castillo is a special education teacher. She made a “mental health checklist(心理健康诉查表)” for her students. The checklist asks kids if they are “Great”, “OK”, “Meh”, “Struggling(挣扎)” “Having a hard time” or “In a really dark place”. Each student needs to write his name on the back of the paper and put it in the section describing how he is feeling. If he puts it in the “Struggling” section, he knows he should talk with friends or parents. If he is “Having a hard time” or “In a real dark place”, Castillo will talk with him. Also, Castillo made a table for “Coffee Time”. Students can sit at the table and work quietly and independently. They can listen to music, have a snack or enjoy some “me-time”. “It is important for teachers to create a classroom where students feel safe to communicate with others,” Castillo said.

When Justin Tong was a child, other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him do lots of housework such as taking out the rubbish, doing some cooking and sending newspapers. But when he grew up, he was richer than his childhood friends and lived a happier and healthier life.
This is the finding of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 children in London. It showed that the children who had worked hard in childhood had a richer and a happier future. “Children who worked in the home or community got abilities and came to feel they were important members of society, ” said Daniel Brown, the expert who made the discovery. “And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them.”
Brown’s study followed these children in great detail(详情). Interviews were repeated at
ages 25, 31 and 47. Brown’s research group compared the children’s mental-health(心理健康)scores with their childhood-activity scores. Points were given for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems.
Working at any age is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility(责任), independence, confidence and competence—the basics of emotional(情绪的)health. They also help him understand that people must work together and work toward common goals. The most competent(有能力的)adults are those who know how to do this.
Yet work isn’t everything. As Tolstoy once said, “One can live wonderfully in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one’s work.”
5.What do we know about Justin Tong’s childhood
A.He came from a rich family. B.He felt sorry for the other kids.

D.Children who feel good about people around them.

When Justin was a child, his parents always let him do lots of housework such as taking out the rubbish and sending newspapers. His childhood friends often felt sorry for him. But when he grew up, he was better than his childhood friends and lived a happier and healthier life.
According to a 40-year study, the children will have a richer and a happier future if they work hard in childhood. Helping do the housework is one of the most important childhood activities. These children believe they can do something to the world. They feel they are important members of the world. And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them, too.
The study collected all the information about these children. It followed them when they were at ages 25, 31 and 47. The researchers compared the children’s mental-health(心理健康) grades with their childhood-activity grades. It showed that children were more healthier when they were active in childhood activities such as doing chores and doing part-time jobs. Reports on mental health problems of young people have increased in recent years: The rate of depression(抑郁率) among them was nearly 25%, However, as they care for themselves, they dare to speak out and ask for help when they don’t feel well.
“Spreading traditional culture” followed “mental health” closely. Although Generation Zers are young, they understand the power of traditional-culture and would like to spread it to the world. Zhao Yan, an eighth-grader from Liaoning Riwan Middle School, said, “My school set up many clubs to help students understand the importance of traditional culture. I join a paper cutting club and I have learned a lot. I made a tiger-shaped paper cutting piece. It has not only helped me practice my handwork skills but also let me know the beauty of art. I consider myself as an inheritor of the culture. It’s my duty to pass this great art to future generations.”
Generation Zers also paid attention to social problems. Keyin Xu, a 16-year-old boy from Changchun, told the reporter, “I care about the prevention and control measures(措施) of COVID-19. I’m now studying in the UK. In February, the UK government announced COVID-19 patients could go out. This would never happen in China! I think China’s ‘dynamic zero-case’ policy(动态清零政策) sounds more responsible. A country should protect its people in any situation.”

Everyone gets sad. Being sad can happen pretty often. More than half of teenagers go through a period of sadness at least once a month. When you’re sad, it feels like it will last forever. 【答案】例文:
Both physical and mental health are important for teenagers. However, nowadays, more and more teenagers have mental problems. Some students hate studying. Some are always in a bad mood. Many children often feel lonely, they don’t know who they should share their feelings with.
What are the causes of these problems These days children have too much homework so that they have no free time. What’s more, children now don’t know how to get along with others, so they have few friends, while their parents are busy with their work and can’t understand them. Of course, children now have fewer abilities to face difficulty and solve problems is also one of the reasons.
What can we do to improve it Schools have to offer mental help and parents should spend more time talking with their kids to know them better. As for children, there is need for them to take up some hobbies such as listening the music, seeing a film, doing sports and so on. I believe children will be better and better as long as we pay attention to solving the problems together.

Dear Mr Smith,
I’m writing to share my idea about the use of the Students Activity Room. I think we’d better make it a playroom.
Students may feel sad and helpless when meeting troubles in life. If these problems aren’t solved well, they may bring serious results. So it is important for them to have a playroom to have fun.
To make it a better playroom, I have following advice. First, they can play enjoyable games such as playing chess as well as playing card games. Students can release pressure through games so that they can be happier. What’s more, creating a movie corner also helps students relax themselves. They can indulge themselves in movies and chat with friends.

Yours,
