“It’s better to travel ten thousand miles than to read ten thousand books.” This old Chinese saying has caused heated discussions among students. Some people think we get a lot from books. First, we can read all kinds of books to know how everything works. Second, by reading good books, we can understand the world better. Third, books make us learn more about history and make us full of different thoughts.
However, some other people prefer to travel outside. Through sightseeing and visiting places of interest, we can understand the world better. It is necessary for us to open our eyes to feel different cultures. Travelling is another way to stay relaxed. Besides, getting in touch with more people can improve our communicating skills.
In my opinion, both of them are good for us. If we want to feel the real world, try travelling.2024年湖北省武汉市中考英语高分突破试题A3考试版

I used to teach in public schools. After several years of teaching, what struck me was that IQ was not the only difference between my best and my smartest kids. Some of my strongest performers didn’t have super IQ scores. Some of my smartest kids weren’t doing so well. If doing well in school and in life depends on much more than IQ, then what is it
I left the classroom and become a psychologist (心理学家). I stared studying kids and adults in all kinds of challenging conditions, and in every study my question was: Who is successful here and why
We went to West Point Military Academy. We tried to predict which cadets (军校生) would stay in military training and which would drop out. We went to the National Spelling Bee and tried to predict which children would make the farthest progress in competition. We studied new teachers working in really tough neighborhoods, asking which teachers were still going to be there at the end of the school year.
In all those very different contexts, one characteristic stood out. It wasn’t social intelligence, or good looks, or physical health, and it wasn’t IQ. It was grit (毅力).
Grit is passion and perseverance for long-term goals. Grit is having patience. Grit is sticking with your future, day in, day out, not just for the week, not just for the months, but for years, and working really hard to make that future a reality. Grit is living life like it’s a marathon not a dash.
Grit also matters in school, especially for kids at risk of dropping out. I asked thousands of high school juniors to take grit questionnaires and then waited around more than a year to see who would graduate. It turns out that grittier kids were more likely to graduate.
However, we still know little about building grit. Perhaps that’s the work that stands before us. We need to take our best ideas and test them. We need to be gritty about getting our kids grit.
61. According to paragraph one, what did the speaker learn from her years of teaching
A. Teaching was less interesting than doing research.
B. Education was more challenging than she expected.
C. Students’ success didn’t necessarily relate to their IQs.
D. Students’ performances depended on their IQs.
62. What does having grit require
A. Social intelligence, good looks and IQ. B. Good looks, physical health and IQ.
C. Running a marathon and dreaming big. D. Passion, perseverance and patience.
63. The speaker’s studies show that grit would help ________.
A. a cadet drop out military training B. a competitor give up in advance
C. a new teacher find an easy job D. a high school junior graduate
64. The underlined word in paragraph fourth probably refers to ________.
A. situations B. words C. backgrounds D. characters
65. The speech is probably written to ________.
A. share psychology survey experiences B. introduce ways to find smart kids to teachers
C. explain the power of the grit D. encourage students to have the grit for their future lives

In my early childhood, I was often surprised when I saw my father making a small number of money with difficulty. Being a child, I was unable to understand him. When I was older, my father started doing a part-time job at home. He used to bring some work back and work till late night.
I can’t forget he played with me when I was 3-4 years old. He taught me how to read when I was at the age of 5. He took care of me all night when I was sick. Whenever I felt down, he would cheer me up. He also cared about my lessons and often helped me get ready for examinations. Later he sent me to New Delhi for the best education. I was unable to move on my feet. Past 23 years flashed into my mind in a moment. I knew my father loved me very much. I could understand the meaning of my father’s aspirations(愿望). I could understand the decisions my father made in the past. The financial(经济)difficulty he was facing was decided by his goal—making his child more successful than himself.
If today I am successful, this is because of my father.

A. Social intelligence, good looks and IQ. B. Good looks, physical health and IQ.

A. a cadet drop out military training B. a competitor give up in advance
C. a new teacher find an easy job D. a high school junior graduate

A. a cadet drop out military training B. a competitor give up in advance

Whenever I needed money, he never refused. He always managed money for my studies.
Two years ago, I got a job at a hospital in New Delhi. When I helped my first patient, I got a strong feeling of satisfaction. When I got my first salary(薪水)which was about ten times more than my pocket money, I spent it all on myself.

【答案】例文
If we want to feel the real world, try travelling.
