From the sky, parts of Borneo look like the top of a giant broccoli（西兰花）. As the world's third largest island with tropical rain forest, it lies in Southeast Asia. I lived on Borneo and was fortunate to have many wild animals visit my backyard.
During the first week in our home, I found a few eggs in a bed of dirt. I was told they were the eggs of a black spitting cobra （眼镜蛇） which was common here. Poison from its bite can kill a person in one to six hours. However, a cobra makes its living by eating small animals. It strikes at humans only in self-defense. We could live with our cobra by being careful not to surprise or scare it.

The other day, the snake was on a branch of an oil-palm tree, less than ten feet from where we were sipping tea. Everyone came out to see it, and chairs were arranged as if for a concert. As we stared openmouthed at her grace, she missed a branch and fell splat to the ground. We burst out laughing as she recovered and wriggled up the tree.
I joked with my husband it was funny the way the cobra was showing off so much that it got too sure of itself and fell. He replied snakes probably do not think like humans. Then I realized a snake would naturally stay near the oil-palm tree whose cores are a rich source of food for mice and squirrels. Small mammals are the cobra's favorite meal.
We shared the garden with the cobra for the rest of our stay and were sad indeed when we had to move and leave Borneo.

Perpetual stew is a dish that is never taken off the heat; it's never finished. As portions are served, new ingredients are put in the pot to replace them. One day's stew becomes the basis of the following days' meals. This year, Annie Rauwerda's 60-day stew became a social media hit. One Bangkok restaurant claims to have been cooking its beef noodle soup since the 1970s. It has been suggested that perpetual stew was a tradition in Medieval Europe when the effort required to start a fire meant that they were left to burn all day, and a pot of stew was always simmering （煨） away on top of it. One New York Times article tells us about a stew in Normandy that was kept cooking for 300 years.
This tradition may date back to the Middle Ages, but thankfully, our understanding of food hygiene （卫生） has developed since then. In a world where food is often thrown away once it reaches its use-by date, many people have asked how safe perpetual stew can actually be. Experts are divided, some maintain that as long as the stew is kept bubbling away at a temperature too high for bacteria to survive, it should be safe. Others suggest that meat can become dangerous if it's left in the stew for too long. Concerns have also been raised that some vegetables, such as potatoes, or those containing nitrates （硝酸盐）， could become more harmful the more they are reheated. Advocates of slow cooking believe that the best food takes time, but even they may be surprised by a months or years-old perpetual stew.

Meat, milk, cheese-just some of the things provided by goats. But now we can also add fire safety to this list. As wildfires damage increasingly large areas of the planet each year, goat herds may offer a way of reducing the risk.
Wildfires are made possible by hot dry weather conditions as well as a supply of dead plants that serve as fuel. We may have limited control over the first factor, but we can control the second. Reducing the fuel load （易燃物总量） lowers the probability of wildfires occurring, as well as the amount of damage caused. This is where we can turn to goats to provide a solution. Goats are being used for landscape management in a number of places around the world, including Greece, Spain, Portugal, Chile and various parts of the United States.
Goats have a very tough digestive system. Many kinds of plants that are poisonous to other animals can be easily eaten by goats. It's not just fully-grown plants that goats are able to deal with: any seeds that pass through a goat become non-viable and will not grow. Human clearance teams have to worry about getting to hard-to-reach vegetation areas but goats don't. They are skilled mountain climbers and can stand on their hind（ 后面的） legs, reaching up to two metres to eat shrubs and grass that humans would struggle to reach. Because of this, using goats can reduce both the possibility of workplace accidents and the amount of money spent on fire protection measures. Goat herds have been found to clear some lands for a third of the price of human plants control teams.
Cost and safety aren't the only benefits. Goats are quieter than lawnmowers and people usually prefer to see goats grazing rather than litres of herbicide （除草剂） being sprayed on the land. Children are often fascinated to see the goats at work and this provides an opportunity to educate people about preventing wildfires.

It was her. “Oh my God!” I screamed, and I began pushing people out of my way to get to her. The crowd started to part and, we must have seemed crazy.
