We put limitations on ourselves when the fear of failure grows stronger than our will to succeed. That’s why we all need a push to help us reach further than we ever thought possible.
That is the purpose of NubAbility Athletics Foundation, a nonprofit organization aimed to get “limb (肢体) different” youth —kids who are amputees (被截肢者)— “out of the stands, off the bench, and into mainstream sports.” The organization holds camps around the country, pairing kids and coaches with similar limb differences to help them reach their full physical potential.
Tim who was born without arms, certainly didn’t believe he could pull off a 20-inch box jump before he joined. This month, the 14-year-old participated in the weight-lifting and training program at a camp and achieved something amazing.
In a video on the Internet, we see Tim’s coach teaching him to jump onto a box. With no arm strength, it seems like a tough task. While Tim pushes through his self-doubt and jumps, he still holds back on his first two tries and doesn’t stick the landing.
Then, the coach pats her hands onto the box, yelling, “All the people who told you you can’t —right here, jump on them. Now!” This time, Tim puts all his energy into the jump. Still, it isn’t enough to make it all the way onto the box. Understandably, Tim grows frustrated and turns away as if to give up. But he’s not done yet. Tim turns back to the box with a look of pure determination, bends his knees… and launches himself onto the box!
As his coaches cheer him on, the victorious teen jumps down and straights into his motivator’s arms, overwhelmed with emotion at what he just achieved. That day, Tim learned he is capable of so much more than he knew.
Tim is living proof that we can all achieve greatness, no matter our limitations. All we have to do is keep trying. Never give up, and never let the word “can’t” hold you back!
4. What is the mission of NubAbility Athletics Foundation
A. To pick out excellent young sportsmen.
B. To develop the full potential of the disabled.
C. To hold camps for the amputees in the world.
D. To encourage teenage amputees to get involved in sports.
5. What might Tim initially look like in the video
A. He lacked confidence. B. He was full of energy.
C. He was very excited. D. He was shy and ashamed.
6. Which word can best describe the coach’s words
A. Scary. B. Funny. C. Encouraging. D. Threatening.
7. What message can we get from Tim’s success
A. Life has no limitations. B. It is never too late to learn.
C. A good beginning is half done. D. It is no use crying over spilled milk.
D 5. A 6. C 7. A
根据第二段首句“That is the purpose of NubAbility Athletics Foundation, a nonprofit organization aimed to get ‘limb (肢体) different’ youth — kids who are amputees(被截肢者) —‘out of the stands, off the bench, and into mainstream sports.’ (这就是NubAbility体育基金会的目的,这是一个非营利性组织,旨在让“肢体不同”的青少年——截肢的孩子——“走出看台,离开板凳,进入主流体育”。)”可知,这个组织的宗旨是让肢体有缺陷的年轻人参与运动。故选D。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“In a video on the Internet, we see Tim’s coach teaching him to jump onto a box. With no arm strength, it seems like a tough task. While Tim pushes through his self-doubt and jumps, he still holds back on his first two tries and doesn’t stick the landing. (在网上的一段视频中,我们看到Tim的教练教他跳上一个盒子。由于没有手臂力量,这似乎是一项艰巨的任务。虽然Tim克服了自我怀疑,开始跳跃,但他在前两次尝试中仍然退缩,没有成功着陆。)”可知,最初Tim是有过自我怀疑的,只尝试了两次,也就是没有信心做到教练要求去做的事情。故选A。
根据第五段中的“Then, the coach pats her hands onto the box, yelling, “All the people who told you you can’t —right here, jump on them. Now!” (然后,教练把手拍在箱子上,大喊:“所有告诉你不行的人——就在这里,跳上去。现在!”)”可知, 教练让Tim把箱子看作是那些认为他跳不上去的人们,鼓励他向上跳,由此推断,教练的话是很激励人的。故选C。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其最后一段“Tim is living proof that we can all achieve greatness, no matter our limitations. All we have to do is keep trying. Never give up, and never let the word “can’t” hold you back! (Tim是一个活生生的例子,证明我们都可以成就伟大,不管我们有什么局限性。我们要做的就是继续努力。永远不要放弃,永远不要让“不能”这个词阻碍你!)”可知文章讲述了残疾少年Tim在教练的鼓励下战胜恐惧,战胜自我的故事,由此推断,通过这次经历他会认识到人生无设限,没有什么是不可能的。故选A。

Officials have unveiled the gold, silver and bronze medals that will be awarded at this summer’s Olympic games in Paris, and each one contains a unique souvenir: a fragment (碎片) of waste iron from the Eiffel Tower.
“It’s the opportunity for the athletes to bring back a piece of Paris with them,” Thierry Reboul, creative director of Paris 2024, told reporters last week. “The absolute symbol of Paris and France is the Eiffel Tower.”
The Eiffel Tower opened in 1889 and during the later repair work, some of the original iron was cut off and preserved over time. Now, some of those preserved metal fragments have found new homes.
Each new Olympic me dal features a piece of Eiffel Tower iron — though the signature “Eiffel Tower brown” paint has been removed. These pieces have been shaped into hexagons (六边形), which is the “shape of France”. Besides, there are words “Paris 2024”, the Olympic rings and the Games logo, which looks like a flame or the face of a woman with a bob haircut.
How did they think of such an idea Joachim Roncin, head of design at the Paris Games organizing committee told the press, “We talked about the design many times and realized that there’s one symbol known across the world, which is the Eiffel Tower. We said to ourselves, ‘Hey, what if we approached the Eiffel Tower Operating Company to see if it’s possible to get a bit of the Eiffel Tower to integrate into the medal ’”
When the Eiffel Tower Operating Company agreed to volunteer pieces of original iron, “the dream became reality,” adds Roncin.
The medals, designed by the luxury Paris jewelry house Chaumet, make people think of the Eiffel Tower in several other ways. The pieces of iron are secured by what looks like special nails that hold the structure together, and the medals’ ribbons are decorated with patterns of the tower’s latticework structure.
The iron fragments are set in recycled silver, gold and bronze disks. Over 5,000 medals are being made.
8. What does Thierry mean by saying “bring back a piece of Paris”
A. The athletes will buy souvenirs about Paris.
B. The athletes will take many photos of Paris.
C. Part of the athletes’ medal is from the symbol of Paris.
D. The Eiffel Tower will be left in the athletes’ memory.
9. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 4
A. The symbolic meaning of the hexagons.
B. The shape and material of the Olympic medal.
C. The processing technique of the Eiffel Tower iron pieces.
D. The design of the Eiffel Tower iron fragment on the medal.
10. How did the designers get the idea of adding the waste iron
A. From a strange dream. B. By asking for the public.
C. Through their discussion. D. By studying the Eiffel Tower.
11. What can we infer about the new Olympic medals
A. They are innovative. B. They are light.
C. They have six sides. D. They are golden-colored.
C 9. D 10. C 11. A

根据第二段““It’s the opportunity for the athletes to bring back a piece of Paris with them,” Thierry Reboul, creative director of Paris 2024, told reporters last week. “The absolute symbol of Paris and France is the Eiffel Tower.” (巴黎2024年奥运会创意总监蒂埃里 雷布尔(Thierry Reboul)上周告诉记者:“对运动员来说,这是一个把巴黎的一部分带回来的机会。”“埃菲尔铁塔是巴黎和法国的绝对象征。”)”可知,奖牌上有埃菲尔铁塔上面的碎铁,而埃菲尔铁塔是巴黎的标志性建筑。故选C项。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“Each new Olympic me dal features a piece of Eiffel Tower iron — though the signature “Eiffel Tower brown”paint has been removed. These pieces have been shaped into hexagons (六边形), which is the “shape of France”. Besides, there are words “Paris 2024”, the Olympic rings and the Games logo, which looks like a flame or the face of a woman with a bob haircut.
根据第五段“How did they think of such an idea Joachim Roncin, head of design at the Paris Games organizing committee told the press, “We talked about the design many times and realized that there’s one symbol known across the world, which is the Eiffel Tower. We said to ourselves, ‘Hey, what if we approached the Eiffel Tower Operating Company to see if it’s possible to get a bit of the Eiffel Tower to integrate into the medal ’” (他们是怎么想到这个主意的 巴黎奥组委设计负责人约阿希姆·朗辛告诉媒体:“我们多次讨论设计方案,并意识到有一个世界闻名的标志,那就是埃菲尔铁塔。我们对自己说,‘嘿,如果我们找到埃菲尔铁塔运营公司,看看是否有可能把埃菲尔铁塔的一部分融入到奖牌中呢 ’”)”可知,设计者们是在讨论得到的这个设计奖牌的想法。故选C项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“Officials have unveiled the gold, silver and bronze medals that will be awarded at this summer’s Olympic games in Paris, and each one contains a unique souvenir: a fragment (碎片) of waste iron from the Eiffel Tower. (官方公布了将在今年夏季巴黎奥运会上颁发的金、银、铜牌,每一枚奖牌都有一个独特的纪念品:埃菲尔铁塔上的废铁碎片。)”以及纵观全文可知,法国把埃菲尔铁塔的碎片经过加工设计镶嵌到了奥运奖牌中,这是其他国家没有的,因此推断新的奥运奖牌是独特、新颖的。故选A项。
D
OH1, a crow-sized seabird, touched down just off the Maryland coast on April 18, completing a migration from Argentina. Soon, more terns (燕鸥) joined OH1, and nesting season was officially underway.
The common terns had become uncommon in Maryland until conservationists and scientists gave the birds, listed as endangered in the state, an artificial wooden raft (筏子). This is one of the birds’ last toeholds in the state.
Every spring for the last three years, staff at the Maryland Coastal Bays Program (MCBP), have pulled the nesting raft into the water of Chincoteague Bay, a narrow slice of ocean situated between the state’s mainland and a chain of barrier islands. The bay was once rich with the kind of nesting habitat seabirds need: small sandy islands where predators (捕食者) are rare and bushes provide shade to flightless chicks on hot summer days. But over the last century, due to coastal development and sea level rise, those islands have disappeared. And so did the terns. By 2020, there were only 60 nesting pairs left.
Initially intended as a temporary solution, the rafts have not only stopped the common tern’s population decline — they’ve completely reversed it. In 2021, 23 pairs of tern s nested on the platform; in 2022, 155 sets of parents hatched 140 chicks.
Figuring out the formula for the birds’ success has been an ongoing process. Dave Brinker, a regional ecologist, says that observing the birds each year “helps us get more terns on the rafts.”
For example, during the first year the raft contained only some tiny wooden shelves intended to provide shade to the baby birds. But the adult terns used the chick shelters like fence lines, outlining their territory. “A natural habitat will have grass to provide that natural geographic separation,” Brinker says. “So the next year we added plastic grass to break up the visual landscape.”
While the nesting platform has become a life raft for the tern population, it remains a temporary solution. The team hopes ultimately to convince the state to rebuild the lost islands.
12. Why did scientists put the nesting raft into the water of Chincoteague Bay
A The weather there is warmer.
B. It is the only bay left for seabirds.
C. There are visitors waiting to see terns.
D. The environment is suitable for tern s to produce.
13. What does the underlined word “reversed” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Recorded. B. Changed. C. Ended. D. Employed.
14. What is the purpose of paragraph 6
A. To introduce terns’ natural habitat. B. To explain ecologists’ ongoing work.
C. To point out the living habits of terns. D. To show the construction of rafts.
15. What can be the best title for the text
A. Terns in Maryland Are in Danger
B. Various Measures Are Taken to Save Seabirds
C. Threatened Seabirds Get a Life Raft in Maryland
D. Rafts Are Becoming Terns’ Permanent Settlements
D 13. B 14. B 15. C
根据第三段中的“The bay was once rich with the kind of nesting habitat seabirds need: small sandy islands where predators (捕食者) are rare and bushes provide shade to flightless chicks on hot summer days.(这个海湾曾经有丰富的海鸟筑巢栖息地:小的沙岛,那里的食肉动物很少,灌木丛在炎热的夏天为不会飞的小鸡提供阴凉。)”
根据划线单词后的“In 2021, 23 pairs of tern s nested on the platform; in 2022, 155 sets of parents hatched 140 chicks.(2021年,有23对燕鸥在平台上筑巢;在2022年,155对父母孵出了140只小鸡。)”
根据第五段中的“Figuring out the formula for the birds’ success has been an ongoing process. Dave Brinker, a regional ecologist, says that observing the birds each year “helps us get more terns on the rafts.”(找出这些鸟成功的公式一直是一个持续的过程。当地生态学家Dave Brinker说,每年观察这些鸟“有助于我们在木筏上找到更多的燕鸥”。)”可知,本段讲述的是生态学家为了吸引鸟到木筏子上做出了很多努力,进而在第六段中列举了生态学家们所做的具体工作,由此可知,本段举例的目的是说明生态学家们为了吸引鸟到木筏子上所做的工作。故选B项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据首段中的“The common terns had become uncommon in Maryland until conservationists and scientists gave the birds, listed as endangered in the state, an artificial wooden raft (筏子). This is one of the birds’ last toeholds in the state.(这种常见的燕鸥在马里兰州变得不常见,直到自然资源保护主义者和科学家们给了这种在该州被列为濒危物种的鸟类一个人工木筏。

Spreading Joy
This past Christmas season began for me as usual on the day after Thanksgiving, Black Friday. My mom, sister, and I had gotten up early to go shopping. As we were driving out of a store parking lot, we caught sight of a dreadfully thin woman sitting on a walker. She was clearly homeless, with bird feathers stuck into her gray hair, and a dirty yellow raincoat.
That homeless woman got us thinking about what Christmas would be like for some one who has no place to call home. With no family to turn to and certainly no presents to open on Christmas morning, these people have nothing to look forward to but the cold and lonely place where they choose to camp. Even though we live in sunny California, the temperature can still fall below freezing on winter nights. Where would this woman sleep when the sun went down
Sadly, homeless people are a common sight in our town. On our way home, we passed countless people pushing shopping carts overflowing with their belongings and people standing in the center dividers of roads holding cardboard signs with “Just Hungry” written on them.
The next day, my mom had a great idea. While we were out Christmas shopping, we purchased some blue tins (罐) of sugar cookies and a few boxes of candy canes. When we got home, I helped my mom carefully ti e each tin with a red ribbon and tape a candy cane on top. Next, we wrote “Call 211 for Help” on notes and taped them to the bottoms of the tins. “Not only will we be spreading Christmas cheer, but now the homeless people will have a number to call and get the help they need,” my mom explained as we worked.
We put all the tins in the car and, whenever we went for a drive, we searched the streets for individuals down on their luck. Usually, the streets are crowded with people carrying sleeping bags, but somehow when you are looking for something, it always seems to disappear.

1.续写词数应为150左右;
Eventually, we found a young man sleeping in the Lowe’s parking lot.

The day before Christmas, we drove around the streets again with our final tin.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Eventually, we found a young man sleeping in the Lowe’s parking lot. He was lying on the ground with only a thin car-pet. My mom quickly got out of the car and placed a tin beside him. Hopefully, when he woke, he found the tin and used a phone to call the helpline. Then we continued to hand out the tins to spread a bit of holiday spirit to those who clearly had none.
The day before Christmas, we drove around the streets again with our final tin. We saw the same woman we met before in a street corner. She was still wearing the dirty yellow raincoat and the bird feathers still got stuck into her gray hair. My mom and I walked up to her with the last tin. She gratefully took the tin and whispered, “Thank you, ma’am” as my mom handed her the cookies. My mom and I were glad that we were able to possibly send a ray of hope to people. After all, the joy of giving is what the spirit of Christmas is all about.

Tim, who was born without arms, certainly didn’t believe he could pull off a 20-inch box jump before he joined.
A Life has no limitations. B. It is never too late to learn.
C A good beginning is half done. D. It is no use crying over spilled milk.

These pieces have been shaped into hexagons (六边形) which is the “shape of France”.

A. The weather there is warmer.
B. It is the only bay left for seabirds.
C. There are visitors waiting to see terns.
D. The environment is suitable for tern s to produce.
13. What does the underlined word “reversed” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Recorded. B. Changed. C. Ended. D. Employed.
14. What is the purpose of paragraph 6
A. To introduce terns’ natural habitat. B. To explain ecologists’ ongoing work.
C. To point out the living habits of terns. D. To show the construction of rafts.
15. What can be the best title for the text
A. Terns in Maryland Are in Danger
B. Various Measures Are Taken to Save Seabirds
C. Threatened Seabirds Get a Life Raft in Maryland
D. Rafts Are Becoming Terns’ Permanent Settlements

Where would this woman sleep when the sun went down
Sadly homeless people are a common sight in our town.

1.续写词数应为150左右;
