By day, Robert Titterton is a lawyer. In his spare time though he goes on stage beside pianist Maria Raspopova—not as a musician but as her page turner. “I’m not a trained musician, but I’ve learnt to read music so I can help Maria in her performance.”
Mr Titterton is chairman of the Omega Ensemble but has been the group’s official page turner for the past four years. His job is to sit beside the pianist and turn the pages of the score so the musician doesn’t have to break the flow of sound by doing it themselves. He said he became just as nervous as those playing instruments on stage.
“A lot of skills are needed for the job. You have to make sure you don’t turn two pages at once and make sure you find the repeats in the music when you have to go back to the right spot.” Mr Titterton explained.
Being a page turner requires plenty of practice. Some pieces of music can go for 40 minutes and require up to 50 page turns, including back turns for repeat passages. Silent onstage communication is key, and each pianist has their own style of “nodding” to indicate a page turn which they need to practise with their page turner.
But like all performances, there are moments when things go wrong. “I was turning the page to get ready for the next page, but the draft wind from the turn caused the spare pages to fall off the stand,” Mr Titterton said, “Luckily I was able to catch them and put them back.”
Most page turners are piano students or up-and-coming concert pianists, although Ms Raspopova has once asked her husband to help her out on stage.
“My husband is the worst page turner,” she laughed. “He’s interested in the music, feeling every note, and I have to say: ‘Turn, turn!’ Robert is the best page turner I’ve had in my entire life.”
24. What should Titterton be able to do to be a page turner
A. Read music. B. Play the piano.
C. Sing songs. D. Fix the instruments.
25. Which of the following best describes Titterton’s job on stage
A. Boring. B. Well-paid.
C. Demanding. D. Dangerous.
26. What does Titterton need to practise
A. Counting the pages. B. Recognizing the “nodding”.
C. Catching falling objects. D. Performing in his own style.
27. Why is Ms Raspopova’s husband “the worst page turner”
A. He has very poor eyesight. B. He ignores the audience.
C. He has no interest in music. D. He forgets to do his job.

The benefits of regular exercise are well documented but there’s a new one to add to the ever-growing list. New researchers found that middle-aged women who were physically fit could be nearly 90 percent less likely to develop dementia (痴呆) in later life and as they did, it came on ten years later than less sporty women.
Lead researcher Dr. Helena Horder, of the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, said, “These findings are exciting because it’s possible that improving people’s cardiovascular (心血管的) fitness in middle age could delay or even prevent them from developing dementia.”
For the study, 191 women with an average age of 50 took a bicycle exercise test until they were tired out to measure their peak (最大值的) cardiovascular capacity. The average peak workload was measured at 103 watts.
A total of 40 women met the standard for a high fitness level, or 120 watts or higher. A total of 92 women were in the medium fitness group; and 59 women were in the low fitness group, defined as a peak workload of 80 watts or less, or having their exercise tests stopped because of high blood pressure, chest pain or other cardiovascular problems.
These women were then tested for dementia six times over the following forty years. During that time, 44 of the women developed dementia. Five percent of the highly fit women developed dementia, compared to 25 percent of the women with medium fitness and 32 percent of the women with low fitness.
“However, this study does not show cause and effect between cardiovascular fitness and dementia, it only shows a connection. More research is needed to see if improved fitness could have a positive effect on the risk of dementia and also to look at when during a lifetime a high fitness level is most important.” She also admitted that a relatively small number of women were studied, all of whom were form Sweden, so the results might not be applicable to other groups.
28. What is on the ever-growing list mentioned in the first paragraph
A. Positive effects of doing exercises.
B. Exercises suitable for the middle-aged.
C. Advantages of sporty woman over man.
D. Experimental studies on certain diseases.
29. Why did the researchers ask the woman to do bicycle exercise
A. To predict their maximum heart rate.
B. To assess their cardiovascular capacity.
C. To change their habits of working out.
D. To detect their potential health problems.
30. What do we know about Dr Horder’s study
A. Some participants quit it halfway.
B. Data collection was a long process.
C. It aimed to find a cure for dementia.
D. The results were far from satisfactory.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. More Women Are Exercising to Prevent Dementia.
B. Middle-Aged Women Need to Do More Exercise.
C. Fit Women Are Less Likely to Develop Dementia.
D. Biking Improves Women’s Cardiovascular Fitness.

An updated version of the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot ChatGPT was launched recently by OpenAI. Its ability to write in an intelligent and human-like manner left users impressed—and also a little bit frightened. People have used ChatGPT to write entire blocks of code, television scripts, and even complete academic essays (学术论文)—causing fears that students might use the bot to cheat their way to an easy A.
But some college professors aren’t that concerned. While ChatGPT’s writing might seem “quite good in an abstract (抽象的) way”, Professor Stuart Selber, who teaches English at Pennsylvania State University, thinks it struggles to address local issues, produce an original argument, or challenge other arguments rather than just copying them. These are all key aspects of effective essay writing in his opinion. That’s why Selber doesn’t think essays written entirely by ChatGPT have any hope of scoring high grades. But he said it might help college students improve their work. Indeed, he thinks it might offer a shortcut for some of the more difficult tasks of essay writing, like preparing a literature review.
Dr Leah Henrickson, a lecturer at the University of Leeds, thinks that, if used carefully, AI might even make education fairer. He said, “I think there’s a lot of potential for it to help students express themselves in ways that they hadn’t necessarily thought about.” AI tools like Grammarly, which analyzes and improves written sentences, are already widely used by college students. In Henrickson’s view, ChatGPT is just the next step—and these tools aren’t going away. “Our students know that these tools exist,” she said. “Our job is to help them use them critically.”
According to Henrickson, the University of Leeds is already looking at revising its assessments in reaction to the rise in AI. It hopes to focus more on critical analysis and judgement—a human skill—rather than straightforward information, which a chatbot like ChatGPT can easily replicate.
32. What do people think of ChatGPT’s writing ability
A. It is real but overvalued.
B. It is as good as that of humans.
C. It is impressive but frightening.
D. It is based on ready-made building blocks.
33. In what way might ChatGPT be helpful for college students according to Selber
A. By writing an excellent essay for them.
B. By providing an original argument for them.
C. By helping them make a literature review.
D. By teaching them to develop abstract thinking.
34. Why is Grammarly mentioned in the last but one paragraph
A. To compare it with ChatGPT.
B. To prove AI tools are here to stay.
C. To indicate its usefulness is beyond praise.
D. To encourage college students to use AI tools.
35. What does the underlined word “replicate” in the last paragraph mean
A. Copy. B. Overcome. C. Understand. D. Revise.

Figuring out what a company is like before you actually work there can be challenging. Luckily, there are a few things you can do to determine whether or not a company is a good fit for you.
First of all, know what you want. 36 So before you can determine whether you and a specific company would be compatible(兼容的) together, it’s important to understand what exactly you want from your employer. Many of us have an easier time identifying the things that we absolutely don’t want. That’s a good place to start.
37 Now comes the part when you put on your detective hat and do a little digging. The Internet will be your best friend when you’re trying to familiarize yourself with a company’s culture before ever walking through their office doors. And where exactly should you look for these culture clues Start with the most obvious place first: the company’s website. 38 Do they use formal, direct language Or is it conversational, and maybe even a little humorous This can be a big indicator of what sort of culture the company is trying to create.
Finally, you can never fail with personal connections. 39 Ask if they would be willing to have a quick conversation with you about the organization in general. If you get a yes to your request for a chat, you’ll be armed with some pretty powerful and helpful information heading into your interview!
Keep these tips in mind to figure out whether you and a potential employer are a perfect match or just a recipe for disaster. 40
A. Learn more by asking questions.
B. Read through their copy and blog.
C. Then make sure to do your research.
D. Next, turn your attention toward their announcements.
E. After all, it’s a good thing to know before actually accepting an offer.
F. Send a quick message to a current or previous company employee by email.
G. It’s hard to make any decisions when you don’t really know what you’re looking for.

So he took the bird in his hands, carried it carefully home and showed it to his parents. At once, his parents took action. They washed the bird and found it injured. With the help of his parents, Albert dressed the wound. But it would need time and care for the bird to completely recover. As the bird had become dear to his heart, Albert immediately offered to care for the bird.
Albert named his new friend “Lucky”. He began to feed the bird and he even ran out to collect grass to build a soft nest for the bird. Then, he put the nest beside his bed. Albert and the bird were sleeping together and living together. Soon they became close friends. Albert always told it about his experiences in school and his secrets. Lucky, an extremely patient audience, usually responded to him with a few nods and chirps (叽叽喳喳声). Albert’s parents also loved Lucky. They regarded it as a family member.
In the course of time, Lucky gradually recovered and started to hop (脚跳) and jump a little bit and exercise its wings. That made everyone happier. Soon it would be able to fly. How wonderful!

Then, he bought a small cage and kept Lucky in it. In the beginning,
Lucky seemed fine inside it. He believed he had made the right choice to
keep Lucky close and secure. However, as time passed, things took a turn
for the worse. After a fully recovery, Lucky wanted to spread its wings and
fly in the sky. When all its attempts failed, what Lucky could do was sitting
inside the little cage and squawking sadly. Several days later, Lucky refused
to eat and drink. Worried and confused, he didn’t know what to do about it.
Knowing the bad situation, Albert’s parents decided to help Lucky and
their son. They told their son, “If you really love Lucky, you should think of
how to make it happy.” After careful consideration, Albert opened both his
heart and the cage. Lucky was released and flew away. Two weeks later, a
wonderful thing happened: Lucky returned, flying around Albert and
chirped happily, seeming to say thanks to him. This had happened from time
to time since then. Instead of losing a forced friend, Albert had made a
permanent one.

M: Me, either.

W: Is this your first car, Alan
M: No. Actually, I got my first car when I was just 18 years old.
W: Was it a gift from your parents
M: No, I bought the car myself. You see, I created my own website when I was in high school, and
then I sold it on my 18th birthday. I made a lot of money.
W: I didn’t start making money until I got my first job at a law firm after college.
M: Well, I started making money when I was in primary school by selling toys to other kids. I only
made a few hundred dollars. But I knew right then that I could make money, and I wanted to
make more.

W: Mike, have you finished doing research for your school paper
M: Yes. I worked on it from 8:00 am to 11:00 am. Now I’m reading some news.
W: So have you read anything interesting
M: Yes. I just read about a baby elephant in a small Indian village. It fell into a well (井) nearly 30
feet deep one late afternoon.
W: That was really bad. I don’t think it could get out of it by itself.
M: You’re right. It wasn’t found until the following morning. But the man who found it couldn’t
get the elephant out.
W: So what did he do
M: He called the local forest department for help. Some people came for rescue. They broke down
the brick wall of the well, and made a way for the elephant to walk on.
W: I hope the elephant didn’t get hurt.
M: Luckily it didn’t. But the well was damaged and needs rebuilding.
W: Well, I think it’s totally worth damaging the well. After all, saving a baby elephant is very
important.
M: You can say that again.

W: Good morning, everyone. Today I’d like to tell you about a movie I watched recently. I didn’t
go to the cinema. Instead I watched it in my own bedroom because the movie is on Disney+ as
a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The movie is about an unlikely but strong friendship. It is
set in a beautiful town near the sea on the Italian Riviera. In the town there lives one young boy
called Luka. Every summer, he loves going outdoors for adventure. One day, he makes friends
with a boy he has never seen before. Luka shares his adventures with his new best friend.
However, all the fun is threatened by a secret. His new friend isn’t a real person. He is a sea
creature from another world just below the water’s surface. If you want to find out what
happens to the two friends in the end, you can watch it sometime. That’s all about the movie.
Thank you.
