Lesson25 Do the English speak English
I arrived in London at last. The railway station was big, black and dark. I did not know the way to my hotel, so I asked a porter. I not only spoke English very carefully, but very clearly as well. The porter, however, could not understand me. I repeated my question several times and at last he understood. He answered me, but he spoke neither slowly nor clearly. ‘I am a foreigner.’ I said. Then he spoke slowly, but I could not understand him. My teacher never spoke English like that ! The porter and I looked at each other and smiled. Then he said something and I understood it. ‘You’ll soon learn English!’ he said. I wonder. In England, each person speaks a different language. The English understand each other, but I don’t understand them! Do they speak English

并列连词(coordinating conjunction)主要是用来表示并列关系、转折关系、选择关系、因果推理关系等。并列连词用来连接属于同一层次并具有相同句法功能的词、短语或句子。
并列关系
and意为“和......”、 “与......”, 表示并列或进一步说明。
He finished lunch. He went into the garden.他吃完午饭。他走进花园。
→He finished lunch and went into the garden.他吃完午饭，走进花园。
both... and... 两者都... （2/2）

not only....but ( also) ....不仅...而且... not only....but....as well (1+1/2) 就近原则

neither ... nor ... 既不......也不...... (0/2) 就近原则

选择关系
or意为“或者”,表示选择; 还意为“否则”、“不然”，表示转折。
I could come next week, or the week after. 我可能下周来，或者再下一周。
We'd better hurry or we'll miss the train. 我们最好快点，否则就赶不上火车了。
either...or... 或…或…；不是…便是…；要么…要么…；不论…还是…(1/2) 就近原则

but意为“但是”、“可是”，表示转折。

while意为“然而；尽管”
You like tennis, while I’d rather read. 你爱打网球，但我爱看书
yet意为“但是，然而”
I have failed, yet I shall try again. 我失败了，但我还要尝试。
however意为“然而；不管怎样”
I am very much believable, however, you'll get him to come. 我相信，不管怎样，你会让他来的。
因果关系
so意为“因此”，在意思上，前句和后句有因果关系。
I was an only child, and so had no experience of large families.我是独生子，因此没有在大家庭里生活的经历。
There wasn't much traffic so we made good progress. 来往车辆不多，所以我们开得很快。
therefore意为“为此，因此”
He's only 17 and therefore not eligible to vote. 他只有17岁，因此没有投票选举的资格。
for意为“ 因为，由于”
The days were short, for it was now December.日子很短，因为现在是十二月了。
注意: because和so, although/though和but不可以连用
