The world’s largest iceberg (冰山), called A23a, broke free from Antarctic in 1987, and has been staying there for over 30 years. Now it’s moving again in the open ocean, according to a news report.
Antarctica is covered with thick ice and snow. Over time, the ice and snow become slowly moving rivers of ice called glaciers (冰川). Glaciers slowly push toward the sea, creating “ice shelves” moving on the water. When a large piece of an ice shelf breaks off, an iceberg forms.
A23a is so massive that it’s hard to imagine, almost the same size as the US state of Rolde Island. And if you stand on it, it will look like the whole world is made of ice. A23a is about 365 meters high, which kept it touching the bottom of the sea and stuck there for over 30 years. But A23a finally began to move again.
Scientists say it’s likely that A23a will keep moving north, where the weather is warmer. The iceberg will leave behind cold and fresh water, changing the temperature and the saltiness of the water behind it. It will also leave behind minerals (矿物质). All of these things will influence the plants and animals that live in the sea waters around it.
Sooner or later, A23a will break into smaller icebergs, which, in time, will also break, until A23a is simply part of the sea once more.
