Have you ever wondered why we say shangcesuo (上厕所) instead of xiacesuo, and yijianxiangzuo (意见相左) instead of yijianxiangyou Many Chinese words have directions in them, and there is lots of history and culture hidden behind.
Up or down
We use shangcesuo to mean “go to the bathroom” and xiachufang to mean “go to the kitchen”. Why In ancient times, houses were laid out (布局) in a certain way. The gate of the house would face south, with the bathroom in the northeastern part of the house and the kitchen in the southeastern part. In Chinese, we talk about the north as shang and the south as xia. So people would say they’re going up to the bathroom and down to the kitchen.
Ancient Chinese not only used shang and xia to refer to (指代) directions but also social positions. For example, people used huangshang to refer to the emperor and dianxia to refer to princes who had a lower position than the emperor.
Left or right
Most people today are right-handed. They feel uncomfortable if they try to use their left hand to write or use chopsticks. This was true in old times as well. So in ancient China, “left” was related to (与……有关联) being different, such as in yijianxiangzuo. If people don’t accept common beliefs (信念), we still say they are following ▲ .
“Left” and “right” also have something to do with people’s social position. For a long time in ancient China, “right” stood for higher position than “left”. For example, the character “佑”, developed from “右”, means a person in a higher position would protect someone in a lower position.
28. Why does the writer use shangcesuo and yijianxiangzuo in the first paragraph
A. To tell a story. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To give an example. D. To solve a mystery.
29. Which of the following can be best put in ▲
A. qishangmanxia B. shangcuanxiatiao C. pangmenzuodao D. zuosiyouxiang
30. Which picture shows the layout of houses in ancient China according to the passage

【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据“In ancient times, houses were laid out (布局) in a certain way. The gate of the house would face south, with the bathroom in the northeastern part of the house and the kitchen in the southeastern part.”可知,中国古代房子的布局是:房子的大门朝南,厕所在房子的东北部,厨房在东南部,因此选项B中的布局符合题意。故选B。

My grandfather died when I was a small boy, and my grandmother started staying with us. I don’t know what kind of perfume (香水) she used, but it was so strong that it was almost impossible to remain at her room breathing for any length of time. Even so, no one can change her.
This, then, was my grandmother at the time of the infamous pea event.
It took place at the Biltmore Hotel. My grandmother, my mother, and I were having lunch. I ordered a Salisbury steak, thinking that was a good old hamburger with gravy. When brought to the table, it was together with a plate of peas.
I always hate peas. It is a complete mystery to me why anyone would like to eat peas. I certainly was not about to eat them.
“Eat your peas,” my grandmother said.
“Mother,” said my mum in her warning voice. “He doesn’t like peas. Leave him alone.”
My grandmother did not reply. She leaned in my direction, looked me in the eye, and said the words that changed my life, “I’ll pay you five dollars if you eat those peas.”
I had no idea of money. I only knew that five dollars was a BIG, nearly unimaginable amount of money. Now only one plate of them stood between me and the five dollars. I began to force the bad things down my throat.
My mother was very angry. My grandmother had a self-satisfied look on her face. “I can do what I want, Ellen, and you can’t stop me.” Every single pea made me want to throw up, but the magical image of that five dollars floated before me, and I finally ate the last of them. My grandmother handed me the five dollars with a flourish. My mother continued to glare in silence. And the event ended. Or so I thought.
That night, at dinner, my mother served two of my all-time favorite foods. Along with them came a big bowl of peas. She offered me some peas, and I, in the very last moments of my innocent youth, refused. My mother fixed me with a cold eye as she put a huge pile of peas onto my plate. Then my mother said the words that were on my mind for years.
“You ate them for money,” she said. “You can eat them for love.”
The five dollars were quickly spent. My grandmother passed away a few years later. But the story of the peas lived on and the words became my forever nightmare (噩梦). I had to eat them that day and every other time they were served thereafter. If I want to refuse, my mother repeats the dreaded words one more time.
31. When grandmother made the suggestion, she most probably felt ________.

Trees can provide many benefits for humans including cleaning the air and providing us with oxygen, shade, food, medicines, and beauty. They can help us to relax and destress, lower our heart rates and blood pressure and improve our mood.
Being outside and connecting with nature, especially hugging a tree, has been shown to be especially good for our mental health. The “Biophilia Hypothesis” (亲生命假说) is often given as a reason why being in nature is good for us. It was pointed out by US scientist Edward Wilson in 1984. He said that humans are born to love being around other living things. Humans’ love for nature is “in our DNA”. This idea helps to explain why people prefer natural, green views to city views. It’s also one of the reasons why people love cute pets.
A study in 2021 reported that tree-hugging can increase oxytocin (催产素). It’s a hormone responsible for feelings. The higher the level of oxytocin is, the calmer and happier you may be. One of the primary ways that oxytocin productions increased is through touch. Hugging trees for only 21 seconds can lead to an increase in oxytocin. Another hormone called cortisol (皮质醇) is a marker of stress. The brain produces more cortisol when the person is anxious, angry, or very sad. Hugging trees helps cut cortisol production, which makes us feel better.
Many animals are well-known for their tree-hugging nature, such as the sloths, giant pandas and koalas. Similar to dogs and kangaroos, koalas do not sweat. For them, hugging trees is a great way of keeping cool without losing water through panting (喘气). In hot weather, koalas loved to hug tree trunks that were cooler than the surrounding air. In higher temperatures, koalas also spread their bodies to increase surface area for the transfer of heat and could cool themselves down by as much as 68%.
If you have never hugged a tree, we hope that you are up for doing so. It’s an amazing way to connect with the natural world and get back to the roots that a lot of us humans seem to have forgotten. Although the activity is helpful to us, it’s important to keep in mind that we shouldn’t hurt nature while doing it.
34. Which of the following can be explained by the “Biophilia Hypothesis”
A. People feel relaxed in natural parks.
B. People prefer to live in the busy cities.
C. People like doing exercises in the sports center.
D. People love visiting theme parks in their spare time.
35. How might people feel with a lower hormone oxytocin
A. They might feel worried but patient. B. They might feel calm and happy.
C. They might feel scared but confident. D. They might feel angry and stressed.
36. What can we learn from the passage about tree-hugging
A. Tree-hugging does much harm to the environment.
B. People can train their physical abilities by hugging trees.
C. Bad moods and mental stress may be improved by hugging trees.
D. Tree-hugging is a useful way for animals to keep themselves warm.
37. What will the writer probably continue to write in the next paragraph

A. show the great importance of eating peas B. explain how to use pocket money wisely

A. An Unexpected Wealth B. A Plate of Peas
C. An Unforgettable Dinner D. A Special Grandma

37 What will the writer probably continue to write in the next paragraph
