Competing in the Mongol Derby
Standing at the finishing line, 70-year-old Bob Long spent a while reflecting on the achievement he’d just made. Behind him was the wild, endless Mongolian grassland extending into the distance. This American had just become the oldest person to ever complete and win the Mongol Derby, the world’s longest horse race.
Long, a rider all his life, entered the race after being inspired by All the Wild Horses, a movie based on the exhausting event.
Fearing that he wouldn’t be able to complete it, he set about preparing his mind and body for this “hardest, toughest, most demanding thing you can do on a horse”, an annual 1,000-kilometer race that was recognized as the world’s longest horse race by The Guinness Book of Records in 2011. He confirmed his belief that preparation can surpass (超过;胜过) youth, as some of the other riders were less prepared.
Although Long had been riding horses for many years, the hardship and uncertainty of the task pushed him to his limit and forced him to depend entirely on his own will. The race organizers had provided an extensive support network to keep an eye on the participants from afar. Despite that, the physical pressure of riding such a long distance made simple things like squatting (蹲) down at the end of the day almost impossible.
Along the vast race course there were unpredictable circumstances beyond Long’s control, however well prepared he’d been. Weather was one of them, which could switch from heavy rain to burning sun unexpectedly.
Above all else, the biggest obstacle was the state of mind. Without a living soul in sight, Long was desperate for interaction, guidance, and comfort. This feeling of loneliness accounted for his hope that one of his fellow competitors would catch up.
Regardless of the hardship, Long felt a sort of spiritual adventure while traveling through the wilderness. He was provided with some memorable moments while connecting with nature. He also grew to love the country and the communities along the route.
Still holding the passion for riding, Long never dismisses the idea of competing in another Mongol Derby.
4. What distinguished Bob Long from other competitors in the Mongol Derby
A. He rode the whole race course alone.
B. He completed the toughest part of the course.
C. He was the oldest participant of the horse race.
D. He was most likely to enter the competition again.
5. What played a decisive part in Long’s achievement
A. His strong willpower. B. His thorough preparation.
C. His passion for nature. D. An extensive support provided by the organizers.
6. What was the biggest challenge that Long faced during the race
A. The changeable weather.
B. The psychological condition in the course.
C. The difficulty in finding the competitors.
D. The physical demand of riding a long distance.
7. What is the text mainly about
A. An introduction to the Mongol Derby.
B A review of a film based on the longest horse race.
C. The experience of the Mongol Derby’s oldest winner.
D. The preparations before a long and difficult horse race.

When Capt. Greg Galeazzi joined the Army seven years ago, he was well aware of the risks of injuries or even death he would face. In 2011, the risks became Galeazzi’s reality — he got terribly injured in an explosion where he lost his double legs. “I was a shell of a man,” he said. “Who I was, was gone.”
Before his injury, playing the guitar had been a special pastime for Galeazzi. Music had always been important to him. He felt deep sadness because he thought he’d lost his ability to play music.
However, everything changed when Galeazzi joined MusiCorps, a music rehabilitation (康复) program for severely wounded soldiers who are recovering at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. “We match the injured troops with professional musicians,” said Arthur Bloom, who founded the program in 2007. “They help wounded soldiers play music and recover their lives.”
Bloom, a graduate of the Yale School of Music, offers his services to patients at Walter Reed who have an interest in playing an instrument. Program participants practice technique, write and record music. Or they may just get together for a jam session
The journey to recovery for many soldiers is a long one. It can require dozens of operations and many years spent in hospitals. There’s so much downtime at Walter Reed, and that’s what they fill up with music.
Since 2007, Bloom and his group have helped hundreds of wounded soldiers. For Galeazzi, joining MusiCorps has helped restore his confidence and made him more optimistic about his future. “Something survived that horrible injury in Afghanistan,” Galeazzi said. “Arthur and his program changed my outlook on what is possible.”
“I’ve seen guys going through such a hard time with their injuries that they are very withdrawn,” Bloom said. “The music becomes their new way of communicating. It can be just as powerful as the spoken word. By injecting music into this space, we can inject life.”
8. Which of the following is NOT true about Greg Galeazzi
A. He clearly knew the risks he would take of being a soldier.
B. He was at one time in total depression about losing his legs.
C. Joining MusiCorps started up his enthusiasm in playing music again.
D. It was music that played a key role in healing his soul.
9. What does the MusiCorps mainly aim to do according to Arthur
A. To offer the participants professional help on how to produce music.
B. To reduce the pain in the participants’ medical treatment.
C. To organize music performances by the participants.
D. To help the injured soldiers regain confidence in life through music.
10. What is Bloom’s attitude towards music
A. negative B. positive C. indifferent D. neutral
11. What is the best title for the text
A. Music heals the wounded B. Confidence rebuilds one in hopelessness
C. He who loses faith, loses all D. Music knows no borders

The Global Food Donation Policy Atlas has issued a recent report in order to recommend ways to increase food donations reduce food waste, and fight hunger, which may help Kenyan leaders meet 2030 food waste reduction goals.
Food donation can reroute eatable food—that would otherwise give off greenhouse gasses in a landfill—to those experiencing hunger. According to the Famine Early Warning Systems Network, 3.5 million Kenyans, roughly 37 percent of the population, face severe hunger. At the same time, the Policy Atlas reports roughly 40 percent of food produced within Kenya goes to waste. But Broad Leib, Deputy Director of Harvard Law School Food Law and Policy Clinic (FLPC), sees some promising changes. “While progress is not happening as quickly as needed, Kenya’s food loss index has been steadily reduced from 1,744 metric tons in 2017, to 1,531 in 2018, to 1,446 metric tons in 2019, indicating a steady improvement and national commitment to food loss reduction,” reports Broad Leib.
According to the Policy Atlas, motivating food donation with rewards is particularly important, which helps food donors and food recovery organizations make up for costs necessary for recovery, storing, processing, and transporting food for donation.
“A major driver of food waste is inconsistent or unclear date labels that cause confusion among all actors along the value chain and limit the ability of businesses to donate food. This increases the likelihood that much safe food will go to waste,” Broad Leib tells Food Tank. However, he acknowledges Kenya’s current dual (双的) date labeling laws. While food may lose its freshness over time, it is still eatable before expiration (到期). Dual date labeling on packaged foods reduces bewilderment by defining dates for both safety and quality. This helps reduce considerable waste and responsibility for donors.
Broad Leib believes that the private sector can also play a significant role in decreasing food waste in Kenya. It is vital for consumer education campaigns. FLPC’s research shows that public-private initiatives can help raise awareness among consumers and donors around issues of food waste and food donation.
12. What changes does Broad Leib see
A. People in Kenya no longer suffer hunger.
B. Kenya has gradually reduced its food waste.
C. Kenya is not committed to reducing food loss.
D. Progress in reducing food waste is happening quickly.
13. What does the underlined word “bewilderment” mean in Paragraph 4
A. Sadness. B. Convenience. C. Confusion. D. Emotion.
14. How can Kenya reduce food waste according to Broad Leib
A. By increasing storehouses.
B. By fighting hunger with rewards.
C. By reducing food produced within the country.
D. By using double date labeling on packaged food.
15. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. Consumer education campaigns are the most important.
B. Only the private sector is helpful in reducing food waste.
C. Private and public joint efforts matter around food issues.
D. Broad Leib doesn’t agree with FLPC on food waste reduction.

Winter break was approaching, and all Scott wanted to do was go snowboarding. Unfortunately, Scott's parents had different plans. They had booked a weeklong tropical cruise Scott hated warm weather and asked if he could just stay at his best friend's house so he could snowboard every day at the local mountain. His parents didn't want to hear anything of it. He kept debating them about the topic, but they would not change their minds. Family time was important to them, and it was tradition that they spend winter break together.
The week of the cruise arrived, and Scott continued to mumble (咕哝) his complaints as he and his family left their house to head south. Scott's dad told him that he would only make the vacation worse for himself if he didn't change his attitude and open his mind to a new experience. Scott still couldn't stop thinking about all of the snow he was leaving behind.
When they arrived at the port to board the ship, Scott had a hard time admitting that he was actually impressed with the size of the ship. He had seen the brochures but seeing the ship in person was a whole different animal. Then he remembered that the brochure said something about a surfing pool. Maybe surfing would be somewhat like snowboarding. After all, it involved riding a board.
Scott climbed aboard the ship with his parents, and then they walked around to check everything out. He couldn't believe how fancy the accommodations were. The dining room looked like a royal hall; the game room had all of his favorite games; the ship's deck (甲板) had several different swimming pools for different purposes. Then Scott saw the surfing pool. It was incredible. It wasn't a big pool, but it had big waves, and the young man who was demonstrating how to ride the waves made it look like a ton of fun.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Scott asked his parents if he could try surfing.

B. A review of a film based on the longest horse race.

Bloom a graduate of the Yale School of Music, offers his services to patients at Walter Reed who have an interest in playing an instrument.
B 9. D 10. B 11. A

根据最后一段““I’ve seen guys going through such a hard time with their injuries that they are very withdrawn,” Bloom said. “The music becomes their new way of communicating. It can be just as powerful as the spoken word. The Global Food Donation Policy Atlas has issued a recent report in order to recommend ways to increase food donations, reduce food waste, and fight hunger, which may help Kenyan leaders meet 2030 food waste reduction goals.
B 13. C 14. D 15. C

A. Sadness.悲伤;B. Convenience.便利;C. Confusion.困惑;D. Emotion.
根据第四段“Dual date labeling on packaged foods reduces bewilderment by defining dates for both safety and quality. This helps reduce considerable waste and responsibility for donors. (包装食品上的双重日期标签通过明确安全和质量日期来减少困惑。这有助于减少大量浪费,对捐助者负责)”可知Broad Lib认为使用双日期标签能减少肯尼亚的食物浪费。故选D。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“FLPC’s research shows that public-private initiatives can help raise awareness among consumers and donors around issues of food waste and food donation.

“for+一段时间”与现在完成时连用,又因主语Tomb-Sweeping Day(单数意义)与celebrate构成被动关系,故填 has been celebrated。

Dear Jim,
I am very glad to hear from you and delighted to know that you are interested in Chinese food.
During the Spring Festival, it’s a tradition for families to get together and have a big meal. However, the food customs vary from place to place. In northern China, dumplings are the typical food, which represent change and good luck. In contrast, in the southern part, it’s a great time to eat tangyuan. They are sticky rice balls with different fillings. Tangyuan sounds like tuanyuan in Chinese, which means “family reunion”.
When you come to Beijing, Beijing Roast Duck is what you can’t miss. The duck is hung and roasted on flames, shaved into slices, dipped in sweet flour sauce, and wrapped in a paper-thin pancake. I bet it will be an unforgettable experience for you.
Looking forward to meeting you soon!
Yours,
LiHua

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Scott asked his parents if he could try surfing. They said, "Of course. And much to Scott's surprise, they wanted to try surfing too. When Scott and his parents had their swim suits on, Scott's dad went first and only lasted about five seconds before he wiped out. Then it was his mom's turn. She actually made it longer than his dad did. When it was Scott's turn, he was excited but a little bit nervous. He hopped on the board and took a stance similar to his snowboarding stance. Then the waves started. It felt similar to snowboarding but different at the same time. On his first ride, Scott rode for almost 30 seconds before wiping out.He was crazy about it though.
Gradually, Scott began to love the cruise. He got to know the people who often surfed there quite well. By the time the weeklong cruise was over, Scott had new friends he planned to keep in touch. Scott is the brave and lucky one since only eight percent of the experiencer or so really fell in love with it among a lot of the passengers who tried surfing the first day of the cruise. With a new hobby, and great memories, he apologized to his parents for earliest moaning and groaning and told them it was his best vacation ever.
