Knee-jerk reaction and recommendations to procrastination can focus on making lists, downloading apps, setting timers, etc. If simply making a list could solve the problem of procrastination, then there wouldn’t be so many articles on it or conversations about it with doctors. 2

Know yourself and your moods. Scheduling tasks during times of high energy will help us be most productive and lessen the opportunity for procrastination. 5 If you are motivated by funny stickers on your papers, then you should pair the rewarding activity with the task you have been procrastinating.

Dear Fresher, joining a university can be a pleasant but challenging experience: horrific and yet beautiful, scary but exciting. 11
Do not panic if, like me, you do not make friends on the first day or week. Before I met Sanaa, I had tried to force myself to make friends with classmates in my other majors. Then I was starting to get convinced that there was something wrong with me. 12 Eventually, when I started making more friends, it made sense why the friendships I had forced did not work out. It was my first lesson in understanding my uniqueness, and reminding me that my “friends” are somewhere, out there. 13
So, dear Fresher, as I say welcome to university life, I am also saying, give yourself time-to understand your school, your course, and your new rhythm of life. Do not fall into the trap of people-pleasing to fit in.
14 Of course, you must leave room to grow and breathe- to discover amazing cultures, new accents,
and new ways of matching your clothes-but do not do anything that needs you to abandon your genuine self in order to become.
Finally, it might not look like it, but the four, five, or six years you will be in university will pass by really quickly. 15 Perhaps that is DIYs, writing blog posts, participating in club activities in your department, or joining the dance troupe.
So, dear Fresher, go forward, and leave your mark! You will be surprised at how much experience that will contribute to your CV.
A.It is a big turn on the pages of your life.
B.Extracurricular activities build confidence.
C.I no longer struggle too hard to fit square pegs into round holes.
D.It is a good idea for you to make friends with like-minded people.
E.That was why I got uninspired by every friendship I tried to make.
F.While the new phase of life is challenging, remember who you truly are.
G.Seek out opportunities to do stuff you are passionate about during your free time.
It’s no secret that reading good news feels a lot better than reading bad news. Like, would you rather bite into a lemon, or sip on a fresh glass of lemonade
16 The world is full of problems and conflicts and we need to stay informed and alert (警觉的) to what’s going on around us. While reading traditional, more negative news is important, consuming good news is also part of staying informed. 17 And it also brings meaningful benefits, like reduced stress and anxiety, higher rates of engagement, community building skills, and inspiration for creating a better world. Plus, knowing what to look for in the good news landscape is a key part of improving our media literacy skills and being thoughtful news consumers.
In fact, good news, known as solutions journalism, is becoming more popular, as publishers and news stations discover the benefits of sharing positive stories. Good Good Good is one of them. 18 A team of reporters and editors there work daily to deliver stories that make readers feel hopeful and equipped to do more good with possible solutions.
“If it bleeds, it leads.” has long been a saying used in the media to describe how news stories about violence, death and destruction draw readers’ attention. 19 The thing is, however, there’s also good stuff out there—the delightful and kind parts of humanity. “Beautiful stories are happening worldwide. 20 When you do find them, the world can suddenly feel like a very different place. Good news is a vital part of how we learn about the world and solving the world’s problems.” Hervey, one of Good Good Good’s editors said.

B.It’s just that we don’t hear as much about them.

F.Heartwarming stories make you cry and feel good.
G.The news media company is devoted to providing good news intentionally.
(2024·浙江·模拟预测)One of my bad habits is saying “busy” when people ask me how I’m doing. Sometimes it’s because I actually am busy, but other times it’s because that’s what I think I’m supposed to say. That’s what important or promoted people say. 21 So why are we so proud to talk about how busy we are all the time
In 2016, researchers conducted a study to figure it out. 22 And interestingly, these status attributions (归属) are heavily influenced by our own beliefs. In other words, the more we believe that one has the opportunity for success based on hard work, the more we tend to think that people who always skip leisure and work are of higher standing.
That’s why we feel like we have to appear busy, and there’s a real perception that if someone is knee-deep in meetings, emails, and stress, then they’re probably a big deal. 23 According to a recent study, one in five highly engaged employees is at risk of burnout.
24 It sounds self-righteous (自以为是) and sets the wrong tone. Phrases like “I have limited access to email” and “I’ll respond as soon as I get back” sound like you’re being held against your will from working as opposed to making the most of your time off.
That’s why we recently launched the Out of Office Email Generator, a free tool you can use before your next long weekend or trip. 25 Managers need to think twice about emailing their teams on the weekend and talking about how busy they are, and so do leaders.
A.Actually, leading a busy life can be avoidable.
B.But working long hours doesn’t drive better results.
C.A person of high status feels tired when promoted.
D.Busy people are found to be those with high social rank.

G.Personally, I’m going to stop saying “busy” when people ask me how I am.
The art of learning how to think
Learning how to think is really the whole point of going to university because it is one of the few periods in your life when you get time to do it.
Like any skill, successful thinking takes practice. The more time you spend thinking and the more ideas you come up with, the more likely it is that some of them will be good ones. 26 Your thinking will never improve if it consists entirely of thinking how much of a failure you are.
27 Geniuses generally come up with their brilliant innovations by thinking about a subject in lots of different ways and establishing connections between apparently different ideas. On the other hand, there are times when you need to know what you are supposed to be thinking about and why, and to stay reasonably focused.
If you are having trouble thinking, it may be because you lack another skill that would make it easier. It could be that you don’t have a wide enough vocabulary to put your thoughts into words. 28 If you share a house with violinists and pianists, you may have trouble hearing yourself think.
One way to sharpen this skill is to think critically about what other people are thinking. Thinking is not always something that needs to be done alone. 29 So, if your housemates ever abandon their instruments, engage them in conversation, look for holes in their arguments, and explain your own.
If you get really good at thinking while at university, you may be able to think of a way to carry that on. 30
A.Proper thinking is about creating an argument.
B.It enables us to become more independent thinkers.
C.If they’re all rubbish, try not to keep thinking about it.
D.And thus it saves you actually doing anything once you leave.
E.You may also be in the wrong environment for productive thought.
F.Having a one-track mind won’t improve your power of thinking anyway.
G.In fact, communicating your thoughts can help to develop and clarify them.

After Michael Brown’s first daughter was born, he went straight back to discuss the next day’s experiments. Early-career scientists often ask laureates (获奖者) about work-life balance. 31
Spend time with your family and friends. Many laureates stress the value of maintaining personal relationships. Doctor Brian Kobilka was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. 32 However, despite a
heavy workload, he also made time for his family. As Brian Kobilka explains, family provides essential support.
Sleep well at night. 33 It is therefore tempting to finish work before health-promoting activities. However, this is a trap which Oliver Smithies advises against. Not only is sleep needed to stay healthy, but your brain needs sleep to function at full capacity so you can generate ideas and solve problems.
34 Family, work and sleep are all important to a scientist’s success. But they don’t all have to be a constant focus. Sometimes it will be important to avoid maintaining everything at a high level. Don’t be daunted by the idea you have to do everything perfectly at once — you can have a different focus at different times.
Don’t work too hard. Ultimately, working too hard won’t be beneficial. Not only do you risk burning yourself out, but you are also restricted in your thinking. Taking time away from work can allow you to approach problems in a new way. 35 Laureates often point out that working long hours doesn’t always lead to efficiency.
A.My solutions may be of some help.
B.Their answers can be enlightening.
C.Focus on different aspects of your life.
D.Never hesitate to bravely rise to challenge.
E.Sleep, exercise and eating well can all conflict with working long hours.

How to Plot a Short Story
A great short story drops the reader into its world swiftly and holds their attention all the way through. 41 It can be as simple as knowing a few key moments you want to work your way toward. You’ll wind up with things you never imagined at the start. Follow these steps to plot your next story.
Brainstorm. You don’t need to have multiple short story ideas ready to go at a moment’s notice. 42 When that idea comes to you, sit down and flesh it out. Make note of any characters, settings, or bits of dialogue that you see.
43 The foundations of your main conflict or theme often form a short story’s rising action. To create tension and movement, you must know exactly what your character wants and what would prevent them from getting it. Conflicts can be internal or external, so imagine at what stage the reader will be meeting your character.
Create a brief outline. Sketch out (草拟) the flow of events your short story will contain, including interactions between characters and key moments. Write down identifying characteristics. But when it comes to drafting, pick your moments of backstory carefully. 44
Pick a point of view. Many short stories work well in first-person because of their brevity (简洁). 45 If your story needs to be told in second-person or third-person, that works, too. Regardless of which POV you choose, it’s usually best to center that narrative around one main character to ensure a consistent read on the situation at hand.
A.Select the right character.
B.Write out the central conflict.
C.All you need is one solid concept.
D.But there’s no hard and fast rule saying yours must.

G.To make the cut, a piece of information must contribute to the story’s central events.

The Meaning and Power of Smell
Research into smell has never ended and in fact, there are so many interesting findings with regard to this sensation. Everyone knows that smell can cause strong emotional responses. In a survey, people were asked to report how they feel about a particular monly, a smell connected with a good experience can please us, while an odour (气味) bonded with a bad memory may disgust us. 51 Such associations can be so powerful that odours generally labeled unpleasant become agreeable, and those generally considered sweet become disagreeable for particular individuals.
52 One respondent believes there is no true emotional bonding without smelling a loved one. Infants recognize their mothers’ odours soon after birth. Individuals were able to distinguish by the smell of clothing worn by their partners from similar clothing worn by other people.
Despite its importance to our emotional and sensory lives, smell is probably the most undervalued sense. While our olfactory (嗅觉的) powers are not as fine as those of certain animals, they are remarkably sensitive. 53
Odours, unlike colours, can’t be named in many languages because the specific vocabulary simply doesn’t exist. “It smells like..., we have to say when describing an odour, struggling to express our olfactory experience. 54
55 Smells considered offensive in some cultures may be acceptable in others. Therefore, our sense of smell is a means of interacting with the world. The study of the cultural history of smell is indeed an investigation into the essence of human culture.
A.Odours are also essential signals in social bonding.
B.Besides, odours are granted different cultural values.
C.Human’s perception of smell facilitates the spread of human culture.
D.Our noses can perceive odours present in extremely small quantities.
E.Nor can odours be recorded: there is no effective way to capture or store them over time.

G.Yet, many people noted that their olfactory (嗅觉的) preferences were based on emotional associations.
(23-24高三下·浙江温州·阶段练习)Resolving (解决) Conflict in Friendships
Conflict is surely a common problem in life and friendships. 56 That’s because there isn’t enough
depth to guarantee all the trouble it takes to smooth over the disagreement. Unfortunately, even when the friendship reaches a deeper level, conflict continues to happen and can break apart a relationship. Here are some resolutions.
Resolve it the day it happens. One rule my parents follow in their marriage is that they don’t go to bed angry with each other. They always attempt to resolve things the day it happens so that in the morning, it’s a fresh start with no past grudge (怨恨). I’ve found I need a short cool down period so that I don’t act in anger. For some, counting to one hundred before saying anything may be an option. 57
58 Sometimes if you sit down and talk things over, you begin to see where the other person is coming from. Realize that everyone has been created differently with various talents, abilities, and personality traits. For example, you might be a leader while your friend is more of a follower. You may be frustrated with him or her for not being very decisive. Yet it is important to understand that each person is unique and needs to be appreciated.
Initiate resolution. 59 Even when you think the other person is wrong, it’s not a bad thing to say “I’m sorry if I offended you in that way.” If you’re honest and genuine in delivering your words, there’s a good chance your friend will respond positively.
Most importantly, be loving in what you do. Try to focus on peacefully resolving the disagreement. It is not a most pleasant task to resolve conflict in any friendship. 60
A.Focus on the bigger picture.
B.Try to see the other person’s perspective.
C.Whatever you do, don’t let things ride for too long.
D.Be the first person in a fight to say sorry for your part.
E.Offering a listening ear shows you value the friendship.
F.Many shallow friendships end up being ruined after an argument.
G.However, it is worth the efforts because it results in a deeper friendship.

1.根据空后一句“However, do they really work (然而,它们真的有效吗?)”
2.根据上文“Knee-jerk reaction and recommendations to procrastination can focus on making lists, downloading apps, setting timers, etc. If simply making a list could solve the problem of procrastination, then there wouldn’t be so many articles on it or conversations about it with doctors.(对拖延症的下意识反应和建议可以集中在列清单、下载应用程序、设置计时器等方面。如果简单地列个清单就能解决拖延症的问题,那么就不会有这么多关于它的文章,也不会有这么多关于它的医生对话)”可知,作者提到如果仅仅通过列清单就能解决拖延问题,那么就不会有那么多关于拖延的文章和与医生的讨论了。这表明需要解决拖延背后的情绪根源,与E项“因此,我们需要解决导致拖延的情绪根源”一致。故选E。
3.根据文章第三段提到的“If not, our brain center responds by telling our body to avoid the situation causing us anxiety.(如果不容易,我们的大脑中枢就会做出反应,告诉我们的身体避免导致我们焦虑的情况)”可知,前文应该是肯定的情况,F项“如果任务容易处理,我们可以尽快去做”符合语境,故选F。

16.空后“The world is full of problems and conflicts and we need to stay informed and alert (警觉的) to what’s going on around us. (这个世界充满了问题和冲突,我们需要对周围发生的事情保持了解和警惕。)”说明了这个世界存在一些不好的事情,C选项“But the “bad news” has its place in the world. (但“坏消息”在世界上也有一席之地。)”说明了世界上存在坏消息,因此引起下文,符合语境,故选C。
17.空前“While reading traditional, more negative news is important, consuming good news is also part of staying informed. (虽然阅读传统的、更多的负面新闻很重要,但消费好消息也是保持信息灵通的一部分。)”说明了消费好消息是保持信息灵通的一部分,空后“And it also brings meaningful benefits, like reduced stress and anxiety, higher rates of engagement, community building skills, and inspiration for creating a better world. (它也带来了有意义的好处,比如减少压力和焦虑,提高参与度,社区建设技能,以及创造更美好世界的灵感。)”说明了好消息的好处,空格处也应该是好消息的好处,D选项“It provides a more balanced view of the world. (它提供了一个更平衡的世界观。)”说明了看好消息的好处,因此承上启下,符合语境,故选D。
18.空前“In fact, good news, known as solutions journalism, is becoming more popular, as publishers and news stations discover the benefits of sharing positive stories. Good Good Good is

21.由上文“One of my bad habits is saying “busy” when people ask me how I’m doing. Sometimes it’s because I actually am busy, but other times it’s because that’s what I think I’m supposed to say. (我的一个坏习惯是,当人们问我过得怎么样时,我会说“很忙”。有时是因为我真的很忙,但有时是因为这是我应该说的)”可知作者不管忙不忙,被问及时,总会很自然地说忙,再结合上文“That’s what important or promoted people say. (这就是重要的或被提拔的人所说的)”可知作者认为忙是重要的或被提拔的人的标志,可见忙有一定好处,然而下文“So why are we so proud to talk about how busy we are all the time (那么,为什么我们总是自豪地谈论我们有多忙呢?)”
22.下文“In other words, the more we believe that one has the opportunity for success based on hard work, the more we tend to think that people who always skip leisure and work are of higher standing. (换言之,我们越是相信一个人有机会在努力工作的基础上获得成功,我们就越倾向于认为那些总是跳过休闲和工作的人地位更高)”主要讲越忙的人社会地位越高,该空内容应与段落中心相关,D选项“忙碌的人往往是那些社会地位高的人。”切合语境。故选D项。
23.由下文“According to a recent study, one in five highly engaged employees is at risk of burnout. (根据最近的一项研究,五分之一的高度敬业的员工有倦怠的风险。)”可知,该空应该讲明忙碌的缺点,才能引出下文讲忙碌带来的不良后果——有些高度敬业的员工有倦怠的风险,F选项“这种忙碌的文化使得人们很难找到工作与生活的平衡。”切合语境。故选F项。
24.由第一段“One of my bad habits is saying “busy” when people ask me how I’m doing. (我的一个坏习惯是,当人们问我过得怎么样时,我会说“很忙”)”和“So why are we so proud to talk about how busy we are all the time (那么,为什么我们总是自豪地谈论我们有多忙呢?)”可知人们(包括作者)喜欢说忙,空后下文“It sounds self-righteous (自以为是) and sets the wrong tone. Phrases like “I have limited access to email” and “I’ll respond as soon as I get back” sound like you’re being held against your will from working as opposed to making the most of your time off. (这听起来很自以为是,而且定错了基调。像“我的电子邮件访问权限有限”和“我一回来就会回复”这样的短语听起来像是你被强行禁止工作,而不是充分利用休息时间。)”表明作者赞成不再忙碌工作,而是应充分利用休息时间,该空内容应与作者不再赞成忙碌的内容相关,与上文形成转折,G选项“就我个人而言,当人们问我怎么样时,我不会再说‘忙’了。”切合语境。故选G项。
25.由上文讲作者不再赞成忙碌和空前“That’s why we recently launched the Out of Office Email Generator, a free tool you can use before your next long weekend or trip. (这就是为什么我们最近推出了外出电子邮件生成器,这是一个免费工具,您可以在下一个长周末或旅行前使用)”可知,作者推荐外出电子邮件生成器是希望人们从工作中脱身,好好利用休闲时间,该空应承接上文讲休闲时如何不再忙碌,E选项“你可以分享你回来之前不会查看邮箱。”切合语境。故选E项。

【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲的是如何学习思考。
26.空前“The more time you spend thinking and the more ideas you come up with, the more likely it is that some of them will be good ones.(你花在思考上的时间越多,你想出的点子越多,其中一些点子就越有可能是好的。)”说明想得越多就越有可能想出好点子,空后“Your thinking will never improve if it consists entirely of thinking how much of a failure you are.(如果你的思维总是想着自己有多失败,你的思维就永远不会进步。)”说明你越觉得自己是失败者,你就永远不会进步,可见不能一直想不好的事情,C选项“If they’re all rubbish, try not to keep thinking about it.(如果它们都是垃圾,尽量不要去想它。)”
27.空后“Geniuses generally come up with their brilliant innovations by thinking about a subject in lots of different ways and establishing connections between apparently different ideas.(天才们通常是通过用多种不同的方式思考一个问题,并在明显不同的想法之间建立联系,从而产生出色的创新。)”
28.空前“If you are having trouble thinking, it may be because you lack another skill that would make it easier. It could be that you don’t have a wide enough vocabulary to put your thoughts into words.(如果你在思考上有困难,那可能是因为你缺乏另一种能让你更容易思考的技能。这可能是因为你没有足够的词汇量来表达你的想法。)”是对思考有困难的原因的推测,空格处也应该是推测原因,E选项“You may also be in the wrong environment for productive thought.(你也可能处在一个不适合思考的环境中。)”说明的是思考有困难的原因,且和空后“If you share a house with violinists and pianists, you may have trouble hearing yourself think.(如果你与小提琴家和钢琴家合住,你可能听不清自己的想法。)”
29.空前“One way to sharpen this skill is to think critically about what other people are thinking. Thinking is not always something that needs to be done alone.(提高这种技能的一个方法是批判性地思考别人在想什么。思考并不总是需要一个人去做的事情。)”说明思考不一定要一个人进行,空格处应该说思考可以和别人一起进行,G选项“In fact, communicating your thoughts can help to develop and clarify them.(事实上,交流你的想法可以帮助发展和澄清它们。)”
30.空前“If you get really good at thinking while at university, you may be able to think of a way to carry that on.(如果你在大学里真的很擅长思考,你可能会想出一个方法来把它延续下去。)”说明你可能会把思考延续下去,空格处应该说这么做的好处,D选项“And thus it saves you actually doing anything once you leave.(这样一来,一旦你离开,你做任何事情这都可以搭救你。)”

31.上文“Hard work has been part of every laureate’s journey towards the Nobel Prize. Many examples…. Early-career scientists often ask laureates (获奖者) about work-life balance.( 努力工作是每位获奖者迈向诺贝尔奖之路的一部分。……早期职业科学家经常向获奖者询问工作与生活的平衡.)”说明,获得诺贝尔奖是需要努力工作的,但是工作和生活不容易取得平衡,结合下文每段的首句可知,下文讲述了诺贝尔获奖者维持生活和工作平衡的策略,因此推断,B项“他们的回答很有启发性。”符合语境,承上启下。故选B。
32.根据首句“Spend time with your family and friends. Many laureates stress the value of maintaining personal relationships.(花时间与家人和朋友在一起。)”可知,本段建议花时间与家人和朋友在一起,结合空前一句“Doctor Brian Kobilka was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.( 布赖恩·科比尔卡博士被授予诺贝尔化学奖。)”可知,此处举例说明与家人和朋友在一起的价值,下文“However, despite a heavy workload, he also made time for his family. (然而,尽管工作繁重,他也抽出时间陪伴家人。)”说明布赖恩·科比尔卡博士也会做一些实验室外的事情,因此推断F项“除了在实验室工作外,他还会在急诊室兼职。”符合语境,故选F。
33.根据段落首句“Sleep well at night.( 晚上睡个好觉。)”可知,本段建议晚上好好休息,睡个好觉,下文“However, this is a trap which Oliver Smithies advises against. Not only is sleep needed to stay healthy, but your brain needs sleep to function at full capacity so you can generate ideas and solve problems.(然而,这是奥利弗·史密斯所反对的陷阱。睡眠不仅是保持健康所必
需的,而且你的大脑也需要睡眠来充分发挥功能,这样你才能产生想法并解决问题。)”说明了睡眠与工作并不冲突,However表示前后文是转折关系,因此推断E项“睡眠、锻炼和饮食都可能与长时间工作相冲突。”符合语境,故选E。
34.空处为段落标题。根据下文“Family, work and sleep are all important to a scientist’s success. But they don’t all have to be a constant focus. Sometimes it will be important to avoid maintaining everything at a high level. Don’t be daunted by the idea you have to do everything perfectly at once-you can have a different focus at different times.(家庭、工作和睡眠对科学家的成功都很重要。但它们不需要一直关注。有时候,避免将所有内容都维持在高级别上是很重要的。不要被你必须一次把每件事都做得完美的想法吓倒——你可以在不同的时间有不同的关注点。)”可知,家庭,工作和睡眠都重要,不需要一直关注所有的内容,也不必把每件事都做得完美,可以在不同的时间有不同的关注点,因此推断C项“关注生活的不同方面。”为最佳标题,概况本段主旨,故选C。
35.上文“Taking time away from work can allow you to approach problems in a new way.( 从工作中抽出时间可以让你以一种新的方式处理问题。)”说明可以从工作中抽出一些时间放松,下文“Laureates often point out that working long hours doesn’t always lead to efficiency.(诺贝尔奖得主经常指出,长时间工作并不总是带来效率。)”

38.

47.前文“Slowly get up and sit at your bed for a few minutes.(慢慢起身,在床前坐几分钟)”为本段建议,指出闹钟响起后要先静坐一段时间,C选项“让身体和心灵感受到平静”为这样做的好处,与后文“The important thing is not to let any hurried thoughts clutter your mind.(重要的是不要让任何匆忙的想法扰乱你的头脑)”呼应。故选C。
根据下文“Instead, take mealtime as a time to enjoy your food. Slow down and let your eyes feast on the different colors, and allow your tongue to taste the variety of flavors.(相反,把吃饭时间当作享受食物的时间。慢下来,让你的眼睛享受不同的颜色,让你的舌头品尝各种各样的味道)”表明此段建议用餐时应将思维关注在食物上,A选项“用心地吃”总结小段。故选A。

52.下文“One respondent believes there is no true emotional bonding without smelling a loved one. Infants recognize their mothers’ odours soon after birth. Individuals were able to distinguish by the smell of clothing worn by their partners from similar clothing worn by other people.
