二、阅读理解
Innovative(创新的) thinking is the key to developing creative and
exciting ways to overcome challenges. Here are some ways for you to
improve your innovative thinking.
Develop a meaningful mission(使命).

A mission statement that matters will bring a new sense of meaning
to your work. When you feel your work has value, you’ll spend more
time and energy on it. A mission statement puts something on that paper
for you to work from, which can make brainstorming go on more
easily.

Question everything.
Ask questions about everything, even the things you think you
already know. You may discover a new way to approach something you
thought you knew. Try looking at something you do every day. Ask
yourself who else does it and how they could do it differently. There are
many ways to finish the task, and if you think yours is the best,
you’re taking a big risk.

Gain first-hand knowledge.
“Book learning” is great, but it will only take you so far. Only
by going out into the field and gaining first-hand knowledge of how
things really work can you hope to understand how to improve things in
that field. No two people see the world in exactly the same way. By
viewing or experiencing something for yourself, you will bring your
own thoughts to the table. As a result, you might be able to see
something that no one else has done, and it may lead you toward new
innovations in the field.

Get inspiration(灵感) from as many sources as possible. New ideas
won’t necessarily appear during the time you’ve set for inspiration. They
often come when you least expect them, and they may even come from
sources you’d never expect. Observe(观察) your teammates’ questions
and ideas, listen to others and hear what they say about the problems
you’re working on, this exchange of knowledge can lead to new ideas.

( B )6. Why should we develop a meaningful mission?

三、任务型阅读
Remya is living in a small village. Her mother suddenly became ill
and her father would have to spend his time caring for her. She and her
twin sister had to do most of the housework. Because the poor family
couldn’t afford an electric washing machine, the two girls would have
to wash the clothes by hand in the local river.

Remya wanted to make a washing machine that could run without
electricity. She started studying electric washers to learn how they
worked. Remya then designed a machine that used bicycle pedals(踏板)
and a chain. To find those items, she and her father went to a local auto
shop. Workers there not only gave her the parts, but also helped her
make the machine!

Here’s how the machine works: Remya used a cylinder(圆筒) to
hold the clothes and put it in a cube(立方体). Next, she connected the
bicycle pedals and the chain to the cylinder. As Remya pushed the pedals
with her legs, the cylinder cleaned the clothes just like a regular
washing machine.

Remya’s invention worked! She had created her own human-
powered washing machine — and now a task that used to take several
hours took only 30 minutes, which saves time and money for the poor
people in the whole world. Remya’s washing machine was chosen from
among 25,000 entries as India’s best innovation! She was given
the India’s National Award and honored by the nation’s former president.

The sudden sound of an alarm clock is enough to wake most of us
up, but it’s an unhappy way to start the day. Thanks to creative
inventors who have been changing our lives with their wonderful products, we may be woken up by the scent(香味) of our favorite food in the future — an alarm clock called Sensor Wake.

This kind of alarm clock has a large face to show the time and a hole
at the top to release(释放) the scent. It can wake you up with smells like
coffee and orange juice. The clock works by releasing the scent at a
chosen time. If a user doesn’t wake up within one minute, the lights on
its face will turn on. What’s more, to make sure that the user gets up on
time and doesn’t miss an important meeting, the clock can also make
sound three minutes after the scent is released.

Now people can choose a smell from ten smell capsules(胶囊), depending on what they think will successfully make them leave their comfortable beds. Each capsule offers 30 wake-up calls, and they can change capsules to enjoy the different scent from day to day.
