My name is Eivind Trodden,I’m 42 years old and on Svalbard in the North Pole.
My background was originally software engineering, and years later I decided to go
3
{#{QQABIQAUgggAQIJAAQgCQw3QCgKQkBAACQgGxBAMMAIAAQFABAA=}#}
ahead and get my pilot license. This year I tried my hands at technology and got
a job at Svatsat, the northernmost Satellite(卫星) Ground Station in the world.
Now I work as a pilot and an operations engineer.
Originally,I moved here for the job. This was the first pilot job I got. After
a while,I was attracted by the place, and right now the most important thing for
me is to live here.
It is wonderful and full of differences. The polar night is balanced with the
midnight sun. Here the year is much like a day. The winter is night. In the morning
there is ice, snow and then spring. Then there is the endless day of summer, and
finally, the town settles in with the sunset of autumn.
The summer is the most difficult. It is harder to create darkness than light.
You have to have good blinds on your bedroom windows. A good trick is to create your
own evening. I like to close the blinds and sit down in relative darkness with a
good book or a movie before I go to bed.
The dark season is the favorite of many people living here. There are fewer
tourists, and people have a chance to get together and be social after the busy summer.
You have to be self-controlled though, and not start lighting candles in the middle
of the day. Don’t underestimate(低估)the cost of living here. You need a large
number of tools to experience Svalbard to the fullest.
24. The author’s present work is probably connected with _________.
A. training the pilots B. software engineering
C. satellite controlling technology D. researching the coldest place
25. What made the author settle in the North Pole
A. The simple lifestyle.
B. His love for the place.
C. Better living conditions.
D. Chances to get a job.
26.Why do many people living at Svatsat like winter most
A. They have spare time to relax.
B. There are less rules to follow.
C. There are no kids to disturb them.
D. They needn’t light candles any longer.
27. Which can best describe the life in Satellite Ground Station
A. Busy but boring. B. Simple but exciting.
C. Colorful and comfortable. D. Great and different.
C
When most people think of drones (无人机), they think of technology and fun.
Safe to say, few people would think about farming. However, a group of students from
4
{#{QQABIQAUgggAQIJAAQgCQw3QCgKQkBAACQgGxBAMMAIAAQFABAA=}#}
York College of Pennsylvania have been building a drone that will not only help local
farmers but the environment, as well.
Samantha Gotwalt and Blayde Reich, two senior Mechanical Engineering majors at
York College in the group, both found the work to be quite fascinating. According
to Samantha, the idea came from a York College professor, who has worked with drones,
and wanted to get students involved with a project beneficial to the community. “We
really want to help farming and agriculture. It’s super-important to America and
our economy,” Blayde says. “We want to help the smaller farmers, and one of the
perks is not having to spend their money on fertilizer and pesticides (杀虫剂).”
The idea is to design and build a drone that will take video imagery of the fields
to determine what is needed to produce the best crop, while saving money and sparing
the environment by reducing pollutants in the water runoff. Ideally, that data gained
will help the farmers better determine what chemicals they need — and what they
don’t.
However, finding the right equipment for the project was a challenge, starting
with what drone the team would design for this particular usage. Samantha says she
researched durability and control of drones to help make the proper determination.
“We are flying over the field and we want to have enough efficiency and go
relatively slow enough that our pictures turn out well — and fly low enough that
it is not using up all of its power,” she says. “The fields are a couple hundred
acres(英亩), so you need your drone to be able to fly the length of that field.”
Blayde says the team continues to learn a great deal of information that will
help the farmers and the environment.
28.What does the underlined word “perks” in paragraph 2 refer to
A.Challenges. B.Features. C.Benefits. D.Solutions.
29.What particular usage is the drone designed for
A.Spreading proper quantities of pesticides.
B.Helping to determine the chemicals needed.
C.Assisting to monitor the state of crops.
D.Measuring the areas of the fields.
30.What technical issue of the drone shall be tackled
A.Its camera capacity. B.Its data collection ability.
C.Its durability and control. D.Its material and efficiency.
31.What can best describe the students
A.Disciplined and realistic. B.Experienced and reliable.
C.Humble and reserved. D.Responsible and creative.

It’s hard to turn down hamburgers,French fries, potato chips and all of the
other junk food that seem to call out to us. However, eating too much junk food can
harm your body, particularly if you’re a teenager.
“Junk food shapes teenager’s brains in ways that damage their ability to think,
learn and remember. It can also make it harder to control bad behaviors,” said
Amy Reichelt,a brain and nutrition specialist at Western University,Canada. “It
may even up a teen’s possibility of depression and anxiety.”
Reichelt and two other researchers reviewed more than 100 studies, including
their own, about how poor food choices can impact teen’s brains. They found teens
are more sensitive(敏感的) than any other age group to processed foods with a lot
of fat and sugar as their brains are not yet fully formed.
Teenagers’ brains are still developing the ability to assess bad possibilities
and control actions. The prefrontal cortex is the part of the brain that tells us
we shouldn’t eat chips all the time and helps us resist(抵制)that urge. However,
this region is the last to mature(成熟)—it doesn’t fully develop until we are
in our early 20s.
So,what’s the best way to say no to junk food Researchers suggest exercise.
When we exercise, the brain’s reward system becomes less sensitive to food reminder.
Exercise also causes the body to make a protein that helps brain cells grow and
strengthens connections between the prefrontal cortex and other brain regions. The
prefrontal cortex(前额皮质)thus can work better to help us make wise decisions
and control our impulses.
32. According to the text, junk food does the greatest harm to ________.
A. Preschoolers B. Teenagers.
C. The middle-aged. D. The elderly.
33. What does the underlined word “It” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. Junk food. B. The brain.
C. The research. D. The ability.
34.What can be inferred from the text
A. Processed foods shouldn’t be allowed to produce.
B. Teenagers don’t understand the harm of junk food.
C. The prefrontal cortex can help us make wise decisions.
D. The prefrontal cortex develops fully in our late 20s.
35. What’s the main idea of the last paragraph
A. Where do our impulses come from
B. Why should we fight against junk food
C. What is the best way to strengthen our body
D. How does exercise work against junk food

If you’re from the northern hemisphere(北半球), you’ll find Christmas to
be rather different in New Zealand. 36 December is in the middle of summer
in New Zealand. Many visitors from the US or Europe can’t quite get used to having
a barbecue on the beach as Christmas dinner. However,Christmas marks the beginning
of the summer holidays for most New Zealanders.
37 One of the best-known Christmas events is the Farmers Santa Parade
in Auckland, which has been a feature(特点) of the Auckland Christmas since 1934.
It attracts thousands of visitors every year and is a great event for children.
New Zealanders continue the British tradition of having a family dinner during
the middle of the day on Christmas Day. It usually begins on Christmas morning by
exchanging presents which will be left under the Christmas tree in the home. 38
Often it is a barbecue in the garden. However, the traditional Christmas food,
such as turkey, ham and roast potatoes,is still very popular, along with salad
and glasses of wine.
It may seem a bit strange to hear songs, such as White Christmas or Deck the
Halls in the middle of summer! Nevertheless,Christmas carols(颂歌)are popular.
39
New Zealand is quite a different society. People from many cultures do not
recognize Christmas in the same way as the early European settlers. 40 It’s
a time to get together with the family and enjoy the great New Zealand summer
outdoors.
A. They all stop on Christmas Day.
B. The most obvious difference is the weather.
C. Most New Zealanders do not go to church regularly.
D. However,Christmas is a special time for all New Zealanders.
E. Many towns and cities in New Zealand hold Christmas celebrations.
F. The Christmas meal itself is increasingly becoming a relaxing affair.
G. People will hear them played or sung in shopping malls during the holiday season.

left hospital,John was sent to a health recovery center. He never heard of this
center before, but it was not far away from his house. Although he felt unwilling
to go there,he had no choice but to accept the fact.
A week later,he arrived there unhappily. The first person he met was Sunny
Chen, who was so kind and friendly that he warmly welcome John to go there. Sunny’s
legs were badly hurt in a skating accident. He told John that he would help him recover
soon. Though Sunny couldn’t move his legs,he became the coach of a basketball team

W: Finding an apartment is time-consuming and disappointing, but with a little preparation and
most importantly,a lot of patience, you’ll get what you want. The first thing you need to do is to
make some time in your schedule. If you are going to find the apartment that fits your
2
{#{QQABIQAUgggAQIJAAQgCQw3QCgKQkBAACQgGxBAMMAIAAQFABAA=}#}
requirements, then unless you’re really lucky, you are going to have to spend a lot of time hunting.
The next thing is to decide exactly what you want and how much you can afford. Think about
what cities or neighborhoods you’d like to live in and what you’d like for your local neighborhood.
Write down what features are important to you, such as parking, public transportation and security.
Then you start hunting. Search every website you can find, and start going through the ads. It is
probably best to start by picking out all the apartments that are within your price range and then
check the location and traffic. Then make the call—but prepare yourself for disappointment.
Apartments that look good on the Internet often turn out to be disappointing. And of course, you

A Famous Figure in Chinese History
As for my favorite figure in Chinese history, it must be Wei Yuan, a great thinker in the late
Qing Dynasty.
He was the first person that opened his eyes to see the world in modern China and he, in
his book,HaiguoTuzhi (Maps and Records of the World) introduced modern technologies and
ideas to China. Meanwhile, he actively asked the Qing government to carry out reform focusing
on the reform of the economic field.
In fact, he inspires me to determine that I’ll major in English in college to be a bridge

【写作第二节】
One possible version:
John was glad that his dream of being a member of the basketball team came true.
Basketball was like medicine for him. John was much better and more confident than before. John
practiced hard to improve himself. He was al- ways the first to come to the court, and the last to
go back home. Although it was not easy for him to play and he did badly at first,he never thought
about giving up hope. He was a boy with a strong mind.
Sunny saw all John did, lost in thought. He could not help praising John for his courage
and love for basketball. There were many ups and downs in life. No one knew what would happen.
However,as long as there was love and hope in our heart, nothing could stop us from achieving
what we desired. As a matter of fact, what we should do was hold fast to the dreams and fight to
the end.
