More than once we have seen videos of dogs, cats and other cute animals shared by people on the Internet. But recently, a less-known animal has caught the public's attention—the capybara （水豚）.
Capybaras are the biggest rodent（啮齿目动物） on the earth. They live in South America and Central America. Like other rodents, copybaras' teeth keep growing. They make them short by eating plants.
Capybaras are strong swimmers. Their pig-shaped bodies are adapted for life in water. Their toes are webbed（脚趾有蹼） for moving through the water. They have dark brown fur, allowing them to quickly dry when on land. Their small eyes, noses and hairless ears are located （位于） high on their heads. So even though most of their body is in the water, they can keep watching as long as their faces are out of the water.
Capybaras are also social animals. They are good at building relationships with other animals. It might sound like magic, but in February, a paralyzed （瘫痪的） patient was able to drink water on his own by controlling a special glove with his brain. The glove then acted as his hand. This was a success in BMI technology made by a team of Chinese scientists and doctors. BMI means creating a connection between the human brain and external devices （外部设备）, making communication between the brain and computers. For paralyzed people, BMI can allow them to move and do simple things by themselves.
On Oct 24, 2023, the team put a BMI chip （芯片） in the patient's head. It can receive neural signals （神经信号） from the brain.
After three months of home training, the patient can now use his brain signals to control a glove powered by air pressure. This helps him do things like drinking water on his own.
BMI technology usually means putting chips directly onto the patient's brain. However, only a tiny cut is made on the patient's head to make sure the patient's brain is not harmed. It also uses a wireless power supply（无线电源）, so the device doesn't need a battery.
Li Yuanning from Shanghai Tech University told CCTV News that BMI is now mainly used in the medical field. It can help to improve the lives of people with brain-related problems or speech problems. In the future, if will be used in other fields.
In China, BMI technology is still in the early period of research, with no products on the market yet. Some people are worried that tests may influence patients' independence and even who they are. About a year ago, this old man began to appear on my way to Tali Department Store every Saturday at noon. Yang Jun'ao, a 16-year-old student from No. 1 Middle School in Nanxian County, Hunan Province, invented a "lotus root harvesting robot（采藕机器人）".
"I got the idea when I saw my 70-year-old grandmother working hard to harvest lotus roots under the hot sun,"Y ang said. Sometimes, his grandmother would badly hurt her fingers when using her harvesting tools. To make things easier for his grandmother, Yang thought of creating a machine that could harvest lotus roots.
The robot moves on its own through the field. It can find grown-up roots by looking at the color of the lotus leaves. The robot's arm then cuts the grown-up lotus roots without breaking them.
During the invention process, Yang faced many problems like collecting parts for the model, putting them together and using a hot glue gun for connection. "The first time I used a hot glue gun, my hands were shaking. But practice makes perfect. I can do it well later," Yang laughed. At first, he planned to use rotating blades（旋转叶片） for harvesting lotus roots, but it was hard to find them, so he used more common blades instead.
When Yang showed the machine to his grandmother, she was happy and gave helpful suggestions for improvement.
