Scientists at Duke University,US,found that the slower a person walks,
the less capable his or her brain is.
Scientists studied the walking speeds of 904 middle-aged people from New Zealand,starting from when they were just 3 years old.Over 42 years,scientists tested their walking speed many times.They found that the speed had something to do with the brain.If people had lower IQ scores or worse language skills as children,they were likely to become slow walkers as they reached middle age.At the age of 45,the average gap(平均差距)in IQ between the slowest
and the fastest walkers was 16 points.
Scientists said that genes ( 基因 ) might be the reason for this.However,smarter people
might be more likely to do physical activity,which means they might walk faster later in life.

Yangtze finless porpoises(长江江豚),also called smiling angels,
are social animals living in the water and they have very strict
requirements for water environments.Finless porpoises have become a
natural sign of the health of the Yangtze River environment,especially after their better-known
cousin,the baiji dolphin,disappeared in the same waters in 2007.
The number of the finless porpoise has risen in 2023 because of the strict rules.A 10-year fishing ban ( 禁令 ) on the Yangtze River came out on Jan.1,2021. The finless porpoise was regarded as a Level 1 protected animal on the national list on Feb.5,2021 and the Yangtze River
Protection Law came into effect on Mar.1,2021.
Thanks to them,some chemical factories along the Yangtze River were moved and more wetlands were protected.All these efforts improved the river's environment,helping more finless porpoises live healthily.An environmental survey said more mother-child pairs were seen and
some were seen in rivers where they had never been found earlier.
The results show that China has chosen the right path in protecting not only the finless
porpoise but also the river's environment.
The story of the finless porpoise is only part of the bigger story of the Yangtze River's protection.And protecting the river is part of the larger picture of the country's environmental
