It was just after 17:00 on a mid-September evening at a historical Church in Harlem, New York City Mostly the low-income black neighborhood sat at dining tables. In front of them was a menu listing three courses, which they only saw on TV. When I asked Bottura why he created such thoughtful meals within beautifully appointed spaces for the low-income, he told me that everyone deserves respect and beauty, and of course, healthy food. “They come in and are completely lost because they’re not used to coming into beautiful places like this. But once they’re here, they realize that this place is their place. It’s not my place,” he said.
Bottura’s philosophy is one that comes from the heart. Clean water might not grow on trees, but the trees might do the next best thing—provide a cheap and easy way of filtering (过滤) it.
Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have been able to use wood from tree branches to filter water both in the laboratory and in the pared to other water filters, the new way of filtering water gets an edge. This could provide an inexpensive and low-tech alternative to costly methods of getting clean water in places that need it the most.
In a new study, researchers show that the natural structure of wood from non-flowering plants like pine provides enough filtration to remove bacteria from water. This method was already proven to work in a lab in 2014, but now the researchers have found, through interviews with potential users and tests of local water sources, that the tree-based purification system works just as well in the field in India and that the locals are willing to use it.
The branches of non-flowering plants are built of thin, straw-like tubes called x ylem in the layer of wood under the skin. The unique structure of the xylem tissue in the branches allows it to work as a water filter because these channels are connected to each other through porous membranes (多孔薄膜). These membranes can catch water pollutants, similar to a water filter membrane.
The researchers were even able to extend the shelf life of dry wood filters to around two years by dipping (浸泡) them in a protective mix of hot water and ethanol (乙醇). To make this potentially life-saving technology be reachable to those who need it, the construction of the filter is open to the public and instructions can be found on their website detailing how anyone can try to construct their own wood water filter.

It was just after 17:00 on a mid-September evening at a historical Church in Harlem, New York City Mostly the low-income black neighborhood sat at dining tables. In front of them was a menu listing three courses, which they only saw on TV. Each dish was prepared with “leftover” ingredients (食材), offered free of charge and placed alongside a blue card that read “you are loved” in hand-written script.
This is one of 14 community centers created around the world in cities like Milan, Paris, Mérida, Lima, Sydney and now New York through three-Michelin starred chef Massimo Bottura’s Food for Soul project. He started the project in 2016 with his wife, Lara Gilmore, to help fight the global problem of food waste by using ingredients that might otherwise be thrown away by suppliers and to give socially and economically vulnerable people access to high quality meals.
Partnering with architects, artists and community leaders, the project is transforming spaces, which are not fully taken advantage of, such as churches and even a historical home into intentionally designed cultural centers equipped with kitchens, dining rooms and other facilities that help create a sense of well-being, connection and inclusion.
When I asked Bottura why he created such thoughtful meals within beautifully appointed spaces for the low-income, he told me that everyone deserves respect and beauty, and of course, healthy food. “They come in and are completely lost because they’re not used to coming into beautiful places like this. But once they’re here, they realize that this place is their place. It’s not my place,” he said.
Bottura’s philosophy is one that comes from the heart. T-shirts worn by volunteers at his community centers say “cooking is an act of love”, and he approaches the food served there with as much care as he does at his restaurants, probably even more, since the diners are extremely stressed and need healthy food to feel better. Bottura insists that it’s important to change the language around the food served in his community centers.

The mysterious puzzle of time has kept people debating its nature for hundreds of years. Science fiction writers have turned it into imaginative stories. Some scientists have even attempted to explain it using math. This math tries to make the dream of time travel come true.
The scientist Albert Einstein said that time and space are one thing. He called it “spacetime”. Einstein said that there are three dimensions in space: height, width and depth. A scientist named Hermann Minkowski added time as a fourth dimension.
Einstein introduced two ideas that have led to theories about the possibility of time travel. The first is relativity. The idea of relativity is that the force of gravity causes space to bend, which causes time to twist. The second idea focuses on special relativity. Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have been able to use wood from tree branches to filter water both in the laboratory and in the pared to other water filters, the new way of filtering water gets an edge. This could provide an inexpensive and low-tech alternative to costly methods of getting clean water in places that need it the most.
In a new study, researchers show that the natural structure of wood from non-flowering plants like pine provides enough filtration to remove bacteria from water. This method was already proven to work in a lab in 2014, but now the researchers have found, through interviews with potential users and tests of local water sources, that the tree-based purification system works just as well in the field in India and that the locals are willing to use it.
The branches of non-flowering plants are built of thin, straw-like tubes called x ylem in the layer of wood under the skin. The unique structure of the xylem tissue in the branches allows it to work as a water filter because these channels are connected to each other through porous membranes (多孔薄膜). These membranes can catch water pollutants, similar to a water filter membrane.
