With the development of modern science and technology, robots have entered our lives, which brings great convenience to us.
Household robots, which are widely used and popular with people, look cool and have many types. They have many functions. Firstly, they can be used to cook and clean rooms. Secondly, they can help to take care of the elder people, and spend time chatting or playing chess with them. Moreover, they can even make calls for help in case of emergency and save lives.
On the other hand, the technology used in household robots is not developed well enough to solve all the safety problems. What’s more, the price is too high for common people to afford one.
Personally, robots should be used to improve people’s lives. Meanwhile, more advanced technology should be developed to ensure the safety and the price is expected to be reasonable as well.

After my mother was diagnosed (诊断) with Alzheimer’s (阿尔茨海默病), the plants in our house began to die. In years past, I remember the deep, earths smell that would rise up in our house after my mother had made her weekly watering rounds. Back then, I never connected it with the care taking that was at the foundation (基础) of everything she did.
But now, leaves were dropping, some dry and edged with brown, and many of the stems bare (光秃秃的). It was a mark of how my mother is no longer able to care for all the things to which she lovingly attended. I had been so focused on the increasing demands (要求) of her own care that her beloved plants had escaped my notice.
I began her old rounds, pouring water into the thirsty soil (土壤), and soon they thrived. That’s the thing about house plants: They demand nothing. They wait quietly, no matter how thirsty they are.
But even after my best attempts, some of the plants could not be revived (复活). My mother’s kind caregivers have since brought new ones to add to her collection, and my father buys fresh flowers every week at the fruit and vegetable market.
Even as Alzheimer’s steals so much of her moment-to-moment memory, her desire to care is still there. I would guide her down the steps to water one of the plants herself with her little white watering can. I watched as her trembling (颤抖的) hands plucked (摘) the leaves that had turned brown. Each time, she smiled up at me with deep satisfaction because being able to care for something is still what brings her the greatest joy.
I look at plants differently these days. I see them as my mother does: quiet reminders of the need for kindness toward all living things. It is clear to me that the things we spend a lifetime cultivating (培养) are never truly lost; the love she has planted in me still blooms.

A.We should always care for our family. B.Alzheimer’s has a huge impact on people.

The pirates (海盗) did not return. After lunch, the doctor took his pistol (手枪) and sword. He put the map in his pocket and left. He wanted to find Ben Gunn.
It was very bat and unpleasant inside the fort. I had a plan and I needed to leave the foal. I took two pistols and left quickly when Gray and the square were with the captain.
First I ran down to the white rocks and looked for Ben Gunn’s boat. I soon found it under bushes. It was a simple boat, made out of branches and goat skins, and it was very light to carry.
I decided to wait until it was dark and row to the Hispaniola. I wanted to cut the ship adrift (漂流), leaving it to float with the currents (洋流). As I waited, I could see the pirates fire burning, and out on the watch the lights on the ship.
As soon as it was dark, I got into the boat and rowed out to the Hispaniola. I found the rope that connected the ship to the anchor (锚) and cut through it with my knife until the ship was free. As I did this, I could hear the angry voices of Israel Hands and another mutineer (叛变者) in a cabin above me.
The ship began to move away in the night air. By then I was so tired that I fell asleep and dreamed of home and the admirel Benbow.
When I awoke, I found myself at the south-west end of Treasure Island. I was only about 300 metres from the shore. When I lay quietly in the bottom of the boat, it moved perfectly over the watch.
But as soon as I sat up, the boat went out of control. So I lay down, and used the paddle from that position. I moved slowly closer to the land, but the current was strong and the boat moved past the bay (海湾).
I moved slowly to the next bay, and suddenly I saw the Hispaniola in front of me. The wind and the currents were moving the ship. I couldn’t see anyone on it. As soon as I was close enough, I held a rope and climbed on board. Just in time, as my little boat hit against the side of the ship and it sank under the water. I climbed to safety on the deck, realizing that my only way of escaping—my little boat—was lost.

Beer and eggs are commonly seen in the kitchen. However, scientists recently found that they were used in historic paintings, too.
To preserve (保存) Danish paintings, a group of researchers studied what ancient paint was made of. They did experiments on small pieces of paintings that had already been cut off from the original artwork.
According to their paper published in Science Advances, grains (谷物) and yeast (醇母) were found on the base of the paintings. Beer was the most common drink in the 19th century in Denmark, and its by-products were spent grains and yeast.
The study showed that they were used to provide a stable painting surface. Researchers also pointed out that beer by-product was used as a “glue” because it had a lot of sugar. With beer added, the paint can also dry faster.
Apart from beer, egg has long been found in oil-based paints used by artists in the 15th century, such as Italian painter Leonardo da Vinci. A recent study published in Nature Communications may have “cracked” the secret of how eggs can help preserve artworks.
The researchers re-created the ancient paint by adding egg yolks (蛋黄) to oil paint. They then looked into how it changed over time. The findings showed that the yolk’s proteins helped slow the oxidation (氧化) of the paint. It could also reduce wrinkling (皱褶) as the egg makes the paint more smooth.
However, the oil paint with added egg usually takes longer to dry. It seemed fine for artists—they were willing to accept to have their work preserved for longer.
“The more we understand how artists choose and use their materials, the more we can appreciate (欣赏) what they’re doing”, Ken Sutherland, an expert at the Art Institute of Chicago, US, told Science News. Sutherland added that research like this could help people have a deeper understanding of the artworks.

A.To help the colors stick better. B.To keep the paintings clean.
C.To make the paintings more colorful. D.To give the painting a different feel.
38.What does the underlined word “cracked” in paragraph 5 probably mean

39.How could egg yolk proteins change the paint
A.The paint could age faster. B.The paint could dry more quickly.
C.The paint’s colors could be nicer. D.The paint could feel smoother.
40.From Sutherland’s words, we can know that ________
A.it’s easy to appreciate artworks in the right methods
B.it’s important to understand the minds of artists
C.it’s hard to research early artworks
D.it’s necessary to help people understand artworks

Konthee, from Thailand, is specially interested in different kinds of flowers and taking pictures of the attractive ones. He lives and works in Kunming now. In Dounan Market, Kunming, the largest fresh-cut flower market in Asia, he has seen many flowers he never saw before and knows more about the relationship between flowers and Chinese culture.
There, Konthee saw phalaenopsis (蝴蝶兰) for the first time. The flower seller told him that the flower means wealth and longevity (长寿) in China. This reminded him of the knowledge of Chinese culture he had learned before. “When I was learning Chinese, I learned that in ancient China, plum blossoms, orchids, bamboo and chrysanthemums (梅兰竹菊) stood for a gentleman’s character,” Konthee said.
Konthee was also amazed by begonias (秋海棠). They represent deep love. He remembered reading about the begonia in A Dream of Red Mansions, where it stands for the sad love between Lin Daiyu and Jia Baoyu.
Besides the unique cultural background that gives flowers their imagery, the rich history of China also influenced the naming of many flowers. Peonies (牡丹), for example, have also been known as “the Luoyang flower” because Luoyang has had the most kinds of peonies since the Tang dynasties.
Konthee’s photography catches these natural wonders. His journey has taught him more about the flowers in Chinese culture.
