A
The following are a few places recommended by tourists.
Ka’awaloa Trail
The pathway is steep and continues for about 2 miles each way, so the way there will be a lot easier than the way back. Keep in mind that the loose rocks may present a dangerous situation when slippery, so do carry the appropriate footwear and plenty of water to fight against the intense sun.
Mauna Kea Summit
Most hikers give themselves 8 to 10 hours to finish the journey. Don’t forget to register at the Mauna Kea Visitors Center before setting out, and plan on being back before sunset. The weather here is unpredictable and completely unique to the rest of the island. This area is pure wilderness, and altitude sickness is a definite risk, so researching the hike in advance on the Mauna Kea website is a must.
Waipio Valley Trail
Famed Waipio Valley, the former home of King Kamehameha, shouldn’t be missed by nature lovers. Be sure to catch a glimpse of nearby Hiilawe Falls from here, flowing 1,300 feet at the back of the valley. About 6.5 miles round-trip, this adventure will most likely be too difficult for beginner hikers due to the steep inclines(倾向) and length.
Onomea Bay Trail
Onomea Bay offers two different hikes from the Mamalahoa Highway in Papaikou. The first, the Donkey Trail, follows a stream through the Hawaiian rainforest past a small waterfall and to the ocean. The second, Onomea Trail, goes just to the right of the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden and past the Alakahi stream. Many choose to combine the trails or pair the hike with the botanical garden for added adventure.
1. What should tourists be careful about in Ka’awaloa Trail
A. Burning. B. Loose rocks. C. Dry weather. D. The steep pathway.
2. Why is the visit to the Mauna Kea website in advance
A. The journey lasts long. B. There exist many tourists.
C. There’s a potential danger. D. The weather is unpredictable.
3. What do the last two items(Waipio Valley Trail and Onomea Bay Trail) have in common
A. They attract plant lovers. B. Tourists can see waterfalls.
C. Tourists can hike along a stream. D. They aren’t suitable for beginner hikers.

I tried not to look down. My palms (手掌) were sweating. All I could concentrate on was the man below who was keeping the ladder steady. The tiny people waved up at me, but I couldn’t see them clearly.
When I got to the top, some sort of supernatural force brought my feet to the edge of the platform. I was going to slip off the board. The line holding me was going to break, and I was once again going to be thrown to death. Down was the only direction my eyes would go.
I begged to go back down the ladder, but the stupid man tried to convince me. The tiny dots below shouted encouragingly, saying they would run with me as I flew. I was going to slide off that platform. I couldn’t think; the tears stopped my brain. Why wouldn’t he let me go back The message replayed in my mind, “You’re going to die…”
Like a blown-up balloon, I was let go just before it could be knotted at the bottom. I went in every direction, tension escaping from my body as I fell. The breeze hit my face and cooled my sweaty body. I could see clearly now, and I was flying.
Today, I am still terrified of heights. It would be nice to say that I conquered my fear and found something I loved. I owe my zip line (飞索) experience to the Englishman who pushed me off the platform. I am grateful for the experience because I love adventure. Trying new things has always appealed to me. Some of the most rewarding experiences I have had, like flying, have come out of conquering what at first appears to be frightening and impossible. While my days of aerial escapades are over, I look forward to the future and the question of fear of flying and will continue to create questions wherever I go.
4. How did the author feel when he was on the ladders
A. Exhausted. B. Frightened. C. Annoyed. D. Excited.
5. Why did the Englishman push the author off platform
A. To teach him to fly. B. To push him to death.
C. To develop his courage. D. To test his ability to climb.
6. Through the zip line experience, the author learns that ________.
A. everyone can enjoy flying well
B. trying difficult things is his favorite
C. looking back on the old days is awful for him
D. something that seems impossible can be conquered
7. What does the underlined phrase “aerial escapades” in Paragraph 5 refer to
A. The author’s zip line experience. B. The author’s difficulty in life.
C. The author’s failure in adventure. D. The author’s dreams about his future.
B 5. C 6. D 7. A
根据第一段“I tried not to look down. My palms (手掌) were sweating. All I could concentrate on was the man below who was keeping the ladder steady. The tiny people waved up at me, but I couldn’t see them clearly.(我尽量不往下看。我的手掌在冒汗。我能集中注意力的只有下面那个把梯子固定住的人。那些小人儿向我招手,但我看不清他们)”以及第三段“I begged to go back down the ladder, but the stupid man tried to convince me.(我恳求从梯子上下来,但那个愚蠢的人试图说服我)”可知,作者站在梯子上,手心冒汗,不敢往下看,想要从梯子上下来,推知他是害怕的。
根据最后一段“Today, I am still terrified of heights. It would be nice to say that I conquered my fear and found something I loved. I owe my zip line (飞索) experience to the Englishman who pushed me off the platform. I am grateful for the experience because I love adventure.(今天,我仍然恐高。如果说我克服了恐惧,找到了自己喜欢的东西,那就太好了。我的飞索体验要归功于那个把我从平台上推下去的英国人。我很感激这次经历,因为我喜欢冒险)”可知,作者自己仍然恐高,但很感激这次飞索经历,因为它帮助自己克服了一开始的恐惧和不可能,暗示了这次经历是为了培养作者的勇气,因此英国人把作者推下平台是为了培养他的勇气。故选C项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Some of the most rewarding experiences I have had, like flying, have come out of conquering what at first appears to be frightening and impossible. While my days of aerial escapades are over, I look forward to the future and the question of fear of flying and will continue to create questions wherever I go.(我有过的一些最有意义的经历,比如飞行,就是来自于征服那些起初看起来令人恐惧和不可能的事情。虽然我在空中冒险的日子已经结束了,但我期待着未来,以及对飞行恐惧的问题,无论我走到哪里,我都会继续提出问题)”可知,通过高空滑索的经历,作者了解到一些看似不可能的事情是可以被征服的。故选D项。
【7题详解】
词句猜测题。根据前文“I owe my zip line (飞索) experience to the Englishman who pushed me off the platform. I am grateful for the experience because I love adventure. Trying new things has always appealed to me. Some of the most rewarding experiences I have had, like flying, have come out of conquering what at first appears to be frightening and impossible.(我的飞索体验要归功于那个把我从平台上推下去的英国人。我很感激这次经历,因为我喜欢冒险。尝试新事物一直对我很有吸引力。我有过的一些最有价值的经历,比如飞翔,都是在克服最初看起来可怕和不可能的事情之后获得的)”以及前文可知,作者主要讲述了作者体验飞索时的经历,所以根据后文的“are over”可推知,应是“飞索经历”结束了,推知aerial escapades应是指“作者的飞索体验”。故选A项。
C
Going through social media can quickly convince you that everyone’s life is more interesting than yours. During a particularly adventurous week on Instagram some months ago, I saw waterskiing in Maui, and swimming with wild pigs in the Bahamas. Wild pigs! I started googling flights to new places, imagining adventures. Then I ordered food from the place I eat at every week and … felt bad about not trying somewhere new.
Recent research about repeat and novel experiences suggests that we ought to reconsider those negative feelings associated with repetition. Ed O’Brien, a professor at the University of Chicago, launched a series of studies on this topic, “There’s a general belief that if you want to seem like an interesting, cultured person, the best thing you can do is to showcase that you’re open to new experiences,” he says. “That may be true, but I think we take for granted the value of really digging deep into one field.”
To test this hypothesis (假设), O’Brien and his team exposed all participants to the same stimulus (刺激), including museum visits, movies, and video games. Next, some people were asked to imagine repeating the experience, while others actually did repeat what they had done. The researchers found that on the whole, participants said that repeating experiences was often far more enjoyable than they had predicted.
There is joy in repetition partly because every human mind wanders. Consequently, we miss a good part of every experience. Repeating things can really be seen as another opportunity to actually experience something fully. O’Brien’s studies show that people are too quick to assume that they’ve seen all the layers even in those cases where they haven’t. It’s safe to assume there are more explorable layers in any experience. When we’re noticing new things in any experience, our brain becomes engaged. All we need to do is approach whatever task is at hand by searching for the things that we didn’t see in it the first time around.
8. Why does the author mention his experiences in Paragraph. 1
A. To introduce the bad feelings linked to repetition.
B. To show novel experiences are more interesting.
C. To tell us a common belief about social media.
D. To present to us his new imagined adventures.
9. What did O’Brien’s studies find
A. People were open to new experiences.
B. Imagination was exciting on the whole.
C. Repeating experiences made one bored.
D. Digging deep into one field was enjoyable.
10. How can we keep our brain engaged
A. By searching for the ignored elements.
B. By assuming we didn’t see all at first.
C. By approaching whatever task is at hand.
D. By keeping focused on every experience.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. The joy of social media adventures. B. The value of repetition in experiences.
C. The importance of trying new things. D. The benefits of travel and exploration.
A 9. D 10. A 11. B
再根据第二段开头“Recent research about repeat and novel experiences suggests that we ought to reconsider those negative feelings associated with repetition.”(最近对于重复和新鲜的经历的研究表明,我们应该重新考虑这些和重复相关的消极的感受。)
根据第二段中“...but I think we take for granted the value of really digging deep into one field.”(但是我认为我们忽视了真正深入挖掘一个领域的价值。)再根据第三段中“The researchers found that on the whole, participants said that repeating experiences was often far more enjoyable than they had predicted.”(研究者发现,整体上来讲,参与者说重复经历比他们之前预计的更有趣。)以及第四段中“Repeating things can really be seen as another opportunity to actually experience something fully.”(重复可以被当作一个完全体验一件事的机会。)
根据第四段中“When we’re noticing new things in any experience, our brain becomes engaged. All we need to do is approach whatever task is at hand by searching for the things that we didn’t see in it the first time around.”(在任何一个经历中,当我们注意到新事物的时候,我们的大脑就忙起来了。
根据最后一段“There is joy in repetition partly because every human mind wanders. All we need to do is approach whatever task is at hand by searching for the things that we didn’t see in it the first time around.”(重复之所以有乐趣,部分是因为每个人的思维都在漫游。
D
Buying green is now popular with many consumers. We choose environmentally friendly products, and we try to be conscious consumers. However, new research by the University of Arizona has found that it has no positive effect on psychological well-being (幸福感). It also has a more limited environmental benefit than the other option simply buying less.
The study followed 968 young adults over a number of years. Throughout the study, participants responded to online survey questions about their subjunctive well-being, their life satisfaction and their psychological distress (悲伤), as well as giving information about their levels of materialism and pro-environmental behaviors.
The study found that reduced consumption buying less, repairing items instead of replacing them, avoiding impulse purchases and so on was linked to a higher level of personal well-being and a lower level of psychological distress, but green buying did not show such links.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the study also found that young people with more materialistic values were less likely to engage in reduced consumption. This group did, however, engage with buying green activities. Researcher Sabrina Helm suggests that this may be because buying green is still buying so it still satisfies the materialists urge to accumulate new items. These people are called ‘green materialists’.
However, green materialists must still deal with the same consumption-related stresses as average materialists. If you buy and own a lot of stuff, it takes up a lot of head space. You have to worry about how to pay for it, and you have to manage all the stuff, worrying about how to keep it safe and how to keep it organized. As Helm notes, “The key is to reduce consumption and not just buy green stuff. Having less and buying less can actually make us more satisfied and happier.”
Understanding how materialistic values affect consumer behaviors, and how those behaviors in turn affect personal well-being, is important. However, Helm acknowledges that for many consumers, changing behaviors to consume less will be challenging. “We’ve been told since childhood that there’s a product for everything and it’s OK to buy, and it’s a good thing because that’s how the economy works,” She Said.
12. What is the difference between buying less and buying green
A. Buying less promotes personal well-being. B. Buying less is based on materialistic values.
C. Buying green brings more life satisfaction. D. Buying green contributes more to the environment.
13. What problem does a green materialist usually have to face
A. The burden of ownership. B. Worries about how to stay safe.
C. Stresses from average materialists. D. The difficulty finding green products.
14. What does what Helm says in the last paragraph indicate
A. It is natural to buy and sell things. B. It’s important to be wise consumers.
C. It’s good to buy what is needed. D. It’s not easy to make people buy less.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. Changes in Consumer Culture
B. Buying Less for Your Happiness
C. Green Consumption: A Choice for the Planet
D. How Materialistic Values Affect Consumer Behaviors
A 13. A 14. D 15. B
The study found that reduced consumption buying less, repairing items instead of replacing them, avoiding impulse purchases and so on was linked to a higher level of personal well-being and a lower level of psychological distress, but green buying did not show such links. 故选A。
However, green materialists must still deal with the same consumption-related stresses as average materialists. If you buy and own a lot of stuff, it takes up a lot of head space. You have to worry about how to pay for it, and you have to manage all the stuff, worrying about how to keep it safe and how to keep it organized. 故选A。
However, Helm acknowledges that for many consumers, changing behaviors to consume less will be challenging. “We’ve been told since childhood that there’s a product for everything and it’s OK to buy, and it’s a good thing because that’s how the economy works,” She Said.
Buying green is now popular with many consumers. We choose environmentally friendly products, and we try to be conscious consumers. However, new research by the University of Arizona has found that it has no positive effect on psychological well-being (幸福感). It also has a more limited environmental benefit than the other option simply buying less.

A Memorable Housework Experience
One memorable housework experience for me was that I decided to clean the entire kitchen on my own. It was a Sunday afternoon, and I saw my mother exhausted after a week of hard work. Taking the initiative, I started with the dishes and moved on to the counters, floors, and even the cabinets. The process was tedious, and I encountered stubborn stains that required extra effort to remove.
As I worked, I realized how much time and effort my mother spends on maintaining the house. It gave me a deeper appreciation for her dedication and hard work. As Valentine’s Day, a time for expressing affection through the exchange of presents, drew near, Kendra found herself seated at the kitchen table, carefully penning her name on Valentine’s cards for her classmates. She recognized her own hesitation; words didn’t come easily to her. While she envied the ease with which her peers talked and laughed, her shyness often kept her quiet.
Kendra grabbed another card. . Her eyes lit up at the phrase “You’re dynamite (引起轰动的人或物)!”—a term that would undoubtedly delight her Grammy, who frequently used the expression to praise their festive decorations. “Well, that looks dynamite!” Grammy would exclaim, her approval filling Kendra with warmth.
Just as Kendra was signing the cards, her mother came in, sharing the sad news of Elise, their neighbor, and her recent accident that led to a broken leg, restricting her to home schooling for the coming weeks. Kendra felt sorry for Elise, and quickly picked the most splendid valentine, hurrying to Elise’s home.
Upon arrival Kendra’s look fell upon the life-sized deer statue decorating the front yard. She studied it, saying to herself, “Wouldn’t this deer look cool with a big heart around his neck Elise could look out of the window and see it decorated for Valentine’s day.”
With this idea, Kendra got the sizable red heart her Grammy had given her, tied it with string, and hung it around the statue’s neck like a festive chain. The next day, she decorated the antlers (鹿角) with a variety of smaller hearts. It was during this act of kindness that Colin and Amy, Elise’s fellow classmates, happened upon the scene. “Are you decorating Elise’s deer for Valentine’s Day ” they asked. Kendra confirmed with a nod, explaining her intention to cheer up Elise. Despite her uncertainty about what to add next, Colin proposed adding some color, while Amy suggested putting decorations on the deer’s back and forehead. That afternoon, they met to decorate the deer with the materials they had sourced. Colin, with his artistic touch, laid the red blanket over the deer’s back, giving it a festive look. Meanwhile, Kendra, feeling a spark of creativity, carefully placed sparkly heart-shaped stickers upon the deer’s forehead, adding a bit of fun. “That looks so cute!” Amy exclaimed. Then, they decided to create a sign. With Amy’s paper and markers, they crafted a colorful banner that read, “Happy Valentine’s Day, Elise!” The sight of their collective effort made Kendra beam with pride, echoing her Grammy’s words, “That looks dynamite!”
Just then, Elise’s front door opened, and Elise stuck her head out. Her eyes widened in surprise, taking in the sight of the festively decorated deer and her friends. “You did this for me Wow! Thank you!” she grinned. Kendra felt a rush of happiness as Elise’s appreciation washed over them. “Can I join in next time ” Elise asked eagerly. “Of course!” Kendra felt featherlight. The “Deer Valentine” not only brought a smile to Elise’s face but also sowed the seeds of a new friendship and marked a personal milestone in kendra’s journey to openly express her affection for others.

A
The following are a few places recommended by tourists.
1 What should tourists be careful about in Ka’awaloa Trail
A. Burning.
B

Consequently we miss a good part of every experience.

13 What problem does a green materialist usually have to face
B Buying Less for Your Happiness
C. Green Consumption: A Choice for the Planet
D. How Materialistic Values Affect Consumer Behaviors

Upon arrival, Kendra’s look fell upon the life-sized deer statue decorating the front yard.
United by a shared purpose, they agreed to meet later.
