Story Walk at Lake Wilderness Arboretum
Lake Wilderness Arboretum and Maple Valley Library have partnered together to bring a Story Walk to Maple Valley. Story Walk is an innovative approach to encouraging people to get out and walk while enjoying wonderful children’s books. With her wealth of experience, Sharon Chastain, the children’s librarian at Maple Valley Library, selects the best children’s books for the project. Then the pages are put in frames (配框) along Arboretum’s Main Looping Trail, so as you walk, you can read the book one page at a time while enjoying being outside. Our hope is that this feature will provide people with a new way to see, learn and experience the amazing world that we live in.
The Story Walk Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier and developed in cooperation with Kellogg Hubbard Library. Since its start in 2007, the project has been warmly welcomed in 50 states and 12 countries.
March Story Walk:
Looking for a reason to get outside Take a walk at the Arboretum and read this month’s Story Walk selection, Trillions of Trees by Kurt Cyrus. This fun, rhyming story follows a brother and sister as they turn a misunderstood phone call into a way to improve their environment. Hard work, getting dirty, and accepting help
from others lead the two on a journey of planting a trillion trees.

Santosh Jadhav, a 28-year-old farmer from Maharashtra’s Sangli district, had never dreamed he would be trending on YouTube tending to his land. But as you watch his videos on Indian Farmer—the channel he runs with his friend, Akash Jadhav, 27—you quickly understand why he is attracting millions of views.
Set up in 2018, Indian Farmer was a result of the two friends’ love of farming, technology and filmmaking. Their videos offer tips, advice and information on various aspects of agriculture, including direct-farming techniques, agriculture-related activities, new farming tools, and agricultural apps. In addition to explaining how agricultural markets function, the channel shares success stories from across the country. A section that draws the most attention features workable solutions to everyday problems and do-it-yourself mechanical quick-fixes.
“We were looking to do something together. Agriculture was something we had in common. Plus, we were young and idealistic—we wanted to do something with a social impact,” says Santosh.
The channel has certainly made a mark, as the numbers show. Since 2018, their channel has built a user base of 21.5 million, thanks to the affordable mobile data revolution and the increasing popularity of smartphones in India. While Akash takes charge of the production side of things, Santosh offers his hands-on knowledge obtained from running his family farm. According to them, the Indian Farmer channel adds an average of 60,000 subscribers and earns between 70,000 and 100,000 in revenue every month.
“Knowledge in this sector is often inter-generational: a farmer is limited to what the others nearby know and do. There was very little by way of books or culture channels that addressed the needs, mistakes and scarcities of farmers. Social media has changed things, enabling cross-sharing of knowledge, all for free,” Akash says.
24.What’s the channel’s most popular section
A.Inspiring stories. B.Advanced tools.
C.Practical solutions. D.Agricultural activities.
25.Which of the following words can best describe the two farmers
A.Experienced and sociable. B.Cooperative and devoted.
C.Conservative and diligent. D.Courageous and humorous.
26.Why are the figures listed in paragraph 4
A.To show the economic gains. B.To imply the cooperation relationship.
C.To highlight social media engagement. D.To indicate the success of the channel.
27.What can we learn from Akash’s words
A.Resources were available to address farmers’ needs.
B.Farming knowledge relies on books and the Internet.
C.Agricultural modernization is dependent on technology.
D.Social media facilitates free knowledge exchange in agriculture.

We know it can be hard to put your phone to bed before you sleep. However, if you’re trying to improve your sleep, you really should ditch your phone at least an hour before bedtime. Luckily, our experts can help.
Scientific evidence suggests that the blue light emitted from your phone, tablet, computer, and TV suppresses (抑制) your body’s production of melatonin, a hormone (荷尔蒙) that plays an important role in your sleep cycle. Melatonin release in the evening helps you relax before bedtime. A 2013 study that analyzed technology use and
sleep patterns with data from a National Sleep Foundation poll found that using devices like phones was tied to more sleep disruption than electronics that aren’t interactive.
Many of us use the excuse that our mobile devices serve as our wake-up calls, or keep them nearby to use meditation apps. If you want to use your phone as an alarm, consider setting it a couple of hours before you turn in for the night, and then setting the phone itself to bedtime mode for the rest of the evening.
Here’s another groundbreaking idea: You could get a real alarm clock. After reviewing them at Reviewed, we recommend the Sharp Dream Caster. Not only is it easy to set a wake-up time, the clock includes white noises and rain noises to help you sleep, plus a number of volume settings to pick what works best for you.
But an alarm clock won’t help you avoid doom-scrolling through social media. Take things a step further by avoiding using electronic devices. You can try reading a book (one made of paper), taking a bath or drinking a cup of chamomile tea.
Finally, if you want to keep up your meditation practice screen-free, consider the Morphée. It looks like a little music box and comes with a variety of breathing exercises and soundscapes to help you get to sleep.
28.What does the underlined word “ditch” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A.Set aside. B.Pick up. C.Show off. D.Turn to.
29.What may be caused by the suppression of melatonin
A.Relaxing yourself before bedtime.
B.Sleeping less than you normally would.
C.Adapting to your sleep cycle more easily.
D.Reducing the pressure from screen use.
30.Why is the Sharp Dream Caster recommended
A.It is sold at a lower price. B.It can predict a heavy rain.
C.It is controlled by cellphone. D.It helps put your eyes together.
31.What is suggested for better sleep according to paragraph 5
A.Making the best of the eco-friendly products.
B.Making a change according to circumstances.
C.Establishing a bedtime routine without electronics.
D.Keeping a consistent bedtime and wake-up time.
D
As people hold different views on almost anything, we live in a judgmental world where people are quick to
point out the faults and imperfections of others, yet seem unaware of their own. Some misguided souls believe they have a duty to help you to be a better person by telling you what a failure you really are first and then offering suggestions as to how you can improve.
So what is the possible solution to criticism
If you are the one forcing others to feel ashamed of themselves, STOP. Make a conscious decision rather than focus on the negative aspect of a person’s performance or attitudes. You are more likely to offer helpful suggestions from the beginning. If you are on the receiving end of criticism, the “OK” response is a perfect solution. When someone comments negatively on a task you are doing or a personality issue of yours, a natural response is to defend and attack. However, this approach is rarely effective as it puts both parties on the defensive. Instead, simply reply with “OK”. This brief one-word response acknowledges the other person’s comment without agreeing with it or feeling necessary to engage in a debate about it.
It is important to remain emotionally attached to what the other person is saying, to listen without feeling, to be an objective observer. In fact, there is much that one can learn from a negative review. You can ask yourself: Did I make a mistake Could I have done better Did I give 100% of myself to the task at hand If so, how can I improve myself As for chronic(习惯性的) criticizers: It is important to set strict boundary with them. Remove yourself from their presence when necessary.
In any case, one can learn to be “OK” with criticism and not allow it to negatively impact your life or relationship with the other party.
32.What may the author think of people who prefer to judge others
A.Warm-hearted. B.Self-centered. C.Talkative. D.Responsible.
33.What does a person probably convey by saying “OK” according to paragraph 3
A.He thinks the suggestions are helpful.
B.He defenses himself with the response.
C.He agrees with the comments completely.
D.He wants to avoid unnecessary arguments.
34.What is the key to making an objective observer according to paragraph 4
A.Having debates. B.Accepting criticism.
C.Keeping calm. D.Avoiding criticizers.
35.What is the purpose of the text
A.To make a judgment on others. B.To explain some social behavior.
C.To call for action against attack. D.To give advice on facing criticism.

Good news is a vital part of how we learn about the world and solving the world’s problems.” Hervey, one of Good Good Good’s editors said.

When he was around 5-6 years old, my brother Ted, who is four years younger to me, suddenly found his legs unable to move one night. What followed was one of the hardest times of my parents'life. Months passed with them meeting various doctors, visiting different hospitals, and knocking at the doorstep of every possible chance — all the time with Ted in their arms, since he wasn't able to walk on his own anymore.
There were doubts of permanent paralysis(瘫痪)— the very mention of which was enough to break us down. From finding it extremely painful to walk, to not being able to get up on his own, and to not being able to stand at all, Ted's problem was worsening day by day. Most surprisingly, all this while, he was as strong as, perhaps, only children can be in such difficult times.
During this period, it was not unusual for my mother to have sudden breakdowns. Once, she burst into tears while watching Ted playing joyfully. He wiped off her tears, and said, “Don't cry, mummy. See, I can stand and even run on my own!” Saying this, he tried to get up, stood on shaking legs for just about a few microseconds and fell down, only to be safely caught in the arms of my mom, who hugged him dearly and cried some more.
This was the most heart-breaking thing that I had ever experienced. But it was also a powerful one for the simple fact that it was my little brother who taught us what life was all about—HOPE.
Witnessing my brother's strong will and positive attitude inspired me as well. As a brother, I could not stand by doing nothing at all. Hope was burning in my heart when I had the idea to train my brother to walk again. I firmly believe Ted could stand up and walk as he used to. Whenever school was over, I would put Ted into a pushchair and tell my mom that we'd just go to the park.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
In the park, I would put Ted one meter away from me, encouraging him to walk.

Working more than 25 hours a week could be negatively affecting the intelligence of employees over age 40, according to a study conducted on more than 6,000 workers by the researchers in Australia. They said that working 25 hours a week was the ideal amount of time for brain functioning. The researchers believe that our “fluid intelligence”, or how well we process information, begins its decline around the age of 20, while the ability to use knowledge and experience, goes down around age 30. By the time we turn 40, our performance in memory tests and pattern recognition exercises tends to decline. The researchers have also looked into the effect of care-taking on brain functioning in middle age. By age 40, many employees are also taking care of children or a parent or both, creating a job on top of a job. This life style would cause a lot of pressure and less sleep, which definitely is a negative factor for our brain functioning. The study noted that the effect of excessive work hours affected both genders equally.

根据前文“We know it can be hard to put your phone to bed before you sleep. (我们知道在上床睡觉前把手机放下是很困难的。)”提到上床睡觉前放下手机对于人们来说是不容易做到的,同时结合该句语境可推知,手机对睡眠是有影响的。因此,想改善睡眠,提高睡眠质量应是将手机放下,即划线单词所在句表达的含义。由此推知,短语“ditch your phone”应是“放下手机”含义,那么“ditch”应是“放下,搁置在一边”含义。故选A项。
根据第二段“Melatonin release in the evening helps you relax before bedtime. (晚上释放褪黑素可以帮助你在睡前放松。)”可知,夜间褪黑素的产生有利于人的睡眠,由此可推断出,褪黑素受到抑制会影响人的睡眠,从而使得人们的睡眠时间少于平时的睡眠时间。故选B项。
30.细节理解题。根据文章第四段“Not only is it easy to set a wake-up time, the clock includes white noises and rain noises to help you sleep, plus a number of volume settings to pick what works best for you. (这款闹钟不仅可以很容易地设置起床时间,还能发出白噪音和雨声来帮助你入睡,还有很多音量设置,让你选择最适合自己的。)”可知,“the Sharp Dream Caster”可轻松设置起床时间,可有白噪音和雨声助眠功能,且可设置适合自己的音量,因此可知,推荐它是因为它有助于人的睡眠。故选D项。
31.推理判断题。根据第五段内容“Take things a step further by avoiding using electronic devices. You can try reading a book (one made of paper), taking a bath or drinking a cup of chamomile tea. (更进一步,避免使用电子设备。你可以试着读一本书(纸做的),洗个澡或者喝杯洋甘菊茶。)”及后面所列举的事例可知,睡觉之前避免使用电子产品,可以看纸质书或洗个澡或喝杯洋甘菊茶,这些有助于睡眠。由此可推知,为了更好的睡眠,可以建立一个没有电子设备的就寝程序。故选C项。

33.细节理解题。根据文章第三段内容“Instead, simply reply with ‘OK’. This brief one-word response acknowledges the other person’s comment without agreeing with it or feeling necessary to engage in a debate about it.(相反,只需回答“OK”。这个简短的一个词的回应承认了对方的评论,但不同意它,也不觉得有必要就此展开辩论。)”可知,回答“OK”有两层含义,一是承认了对方的评论,二是说话人并不同意这一评论,但没有必要就此展开争论。故选D项。
34.细节理解题。根据文章第四段内容“It is important to remain emotionally attached to what the other person is saying, to listen without feeling, to be an objective observer.(重要的是,要对对方所说的话保持情感上的依恋,不带感情地倾听,做一个客观的观察者。)”
通读文章内容可知,文章第二段内容“So what is the possible solution to criticism (那么,应对批评的可能解决方案是什么呢 )”以及文章末尾段内容“In any case, one can learn to be ‘OK’ with criticism and not allow it to negatively impact your life or relationship with the other party.(在任何情况下,一个人都可以学会接受批评,不要让它对你的生活或与对方的关系产生负面影响。)”

67.In the park, I would put Ted one meter away from me, encouraging him to walk. His initial attempts were shaky, and he would often fall in my arms after just a couple of steps. I kept telling him that each small step was a victory. During that tough time, we had gone through countless days of helplessness, breakdowns and despair. We celebrated every attempt and every inch forward, becoming full of hope for the future. I knew that this was more than just physical training, it was a lesson in perseverance for both of us. Gradually, His legs began to gain strength, and his falls became less frequent.
We agreed to keep this a secret from our parents until mom's birthday. We wanted to give her the most memorable gift—a miracle we had been working on. As the day approached, Ted's steps became more confident and his falls became fewer. On mom's birthday, we led our parents to the living room where Ted was waiting, standing on his own. With a signal, he started walking towards mom, his every step a testament to his incredible courage. The look of shock and joy on our parents' faces was indescribable. Tears streamed down my mom's cheeks as she watched Ted walk into her arms. It was a moment of triumph, a celebration of hope, and the best birthday present we could have ever given. Our secret training had paid off, and Ted's journey was a reminder to all of us that hope, combined with action, can lead to miracles.
