Every year, the Autumn Begins is between the 7th and 9th of August. The Autumn Begins (Liqiu in Chinese) is one of the 24 solar terms.
There is the custom of “Touching Autumn” in the northern part of Yancheng, Jiangsu. On the eve of the Autumn Begins, people can touch and take all kinds of fruits as they like in others’ gardens for free, and the owners will not be angry. Many gardeners even leave some fruits in the field for others during the night.
In Shandong, people make dumplings during the Autumn Begins, and they call it “Eating the Autumn”. On the day of the Autumn Begins, elder members in the family will sit in the middle of the hall, praying for the harvest in autumn. But most of the families will eat dumplings together after the Autumn Begins.
People in some places will eat peaches on the day of the Autumn Begins. The peach stones are kept until New Year’s Eve. They will throw the stones into the stove and burn them. People believe it can help them get healthy.

According to scientists’ research(研究), the month in which babies are born could affect(影响) them in some ways.
Babies born in spring get sick easily. Children born under Aquarius(水瓶座) (Jan. 21st — Feb. 19th) may be less clever than those born in other seasons. They may also have shorter lives than those born in autumn. Scientists believe many of the differences can be explained by the mother’sexposureto sunlight inpregnancy(怀孕). Sunlight helps lead to the production of vitamin(维生素) D in the body. Thelack(缺乏) of vitamin D in the first months of life may have a bad effect(影响) on health.
Vitamin D is called the “sunshine vitamin”. It has a good effect on health. A study showed that people born from April to June had slightly shorter lives than those born in October, November or December. Similar studies in the US showed that people born in autumn lived about 160 days longer than those born in spring.
Professor Russell Foster said the conclusions(结论) were surprising and interesting. He added, “These are small effects but they are very, very clear. I am not giving voice to star signs and they are just for fun. But it is true that we are affected by our season of birth.”

Hi, my name is Alex. This is my school schedule. I have to wake up every morning at about 6:30. First, I have breakfast. Then I ride my bike to school. It takes me 20 minutes to get there.
