Sandoval, who comes from Los Angeles, has traveled and filmed in over 50 countries across seven continents and now lives in China. “In 2008, tired of my studio work in the U. S, I came to China, thinking I would be here one or two years, but it has turned out to be 16 years!” he said. He hopes his photographs will inspire others to embark on adventures as well.
Sandoval is a professional photographer and learned commercial photography at what was then the Brooks Institute of Photography. With the hope of trying something different for himself, he went to Chengdu in Southwest China to live in October 2008 and has traveled throughout the country since then.
In the beginning, he did editorial work for magazines both in and outside Sichuan, such as Vogue. Then he worked with the Sichuan tourism department to produce travel brochures, and also on ad campaigns for destinations for corporate companies.
To him, Chengdu is the capital of a laid-back lifestyle. He was delighted to see that residents, dressed stylishly or comfortably, strolled in the streets “as slowly as snails”. Almost a “walking encyclopedia” of Chengdu,
Sandoval covered every corner of Chengdu and recorded Chengduese and their lives with his camera, listening to the sound of mahjong tiles being shuffled and music from traditional stringed instruments.
He also goes from place to place with his heavy travel kit. The varied culture and vast, beautiful land has kept him in China much longer than he had planned in the beginning. He remember s a wide range of adventures like exploring a local vineyard and local wine in Yinchuan City, a riding performance by a Mongolian ethnic group in the Shuidonggou Horse Riding Show, and then the totally different experience of visiting the Hainan Free Trade Port in the south.
He thinks he has done a lot in “this beautiful and vast country” with his “travel photos”. “I try to show people the beauty of where I go. I try to inspire them to travel and go to places. I’m hoping to do more international work.” he said.
24. Why did Sandoval come to China
A. He was not good at studio work. B. He wanted to step out of the comfort zone.
C. He had a preference for international work. D. He was attracted by the picturesque nature of China.
25. What does the underlined word “laid-back” in Paragraph 4 refer to

26. Sandoval’s experiences around China are mentioned in Paragraph 5 to show _.
A. Sandoval’s diverse hobbies B. Sandoval’s desire for new careers
C. Sandoval’s superb photo technique D. Sandoval’s fascination for Chinese culture
27. What is the writing purpose of this passage
A. To call on readers to take up photography.
B. To praise Sandoval for spreading Chinese culture.
C. To facilitate the development of tourism in Chengdu.
D. To introduce the experience of a professional photographer.

About a decade ago, wearing hanfu, a traditional style of clothing worn by China’s Han ethnic group, was considered more of a hobby, with a relatively small number of Chinese individuals participating in the trend. Currently, there is a notable shift as young consumers in China are urging brands to acknowledge their heritage and adapt to it to influence the market. The hanfu movement rather suits this rhetoric, advocating cultural autonomy infused with a touch of patriotism.
Many Chinese Gen Zs have come to realize that fashion is not exclusive to Western styles; they have also recognized the allure and appeal of their own traditional garments. Cultural confidence has played a significant role in popularizing these traditional clothing choices.
Jun Baoyuan, a 24-year-old graduate from the Beijing Institute of Technology, said that people who develop an interest in hanfu will in turn learn more about the traditional skills rooted in Chinese culture, including cloth weaving and traditional jewelry handicrafts. She also noted that many of her close friends today had entered her life as a result of their shared passion for hanfu. Jun often shares her hanfu-clad adventures on Douyin, where she has gathered a 60,000-strong following.
As her reputation as a high-flying hanfu model grew, she started collaborating with museums in China and participating in a range of events. But Jun also warned that with the popularity of hanfu events and the rising number of enthusiasts who want to join the movement, some merchants have fueled unfair competition by selling poor-quality hanfu garments at high prices. These days, making sure you get your money’s worth requires a good deal of knowledge.
The hanfu movement is among the most significant currents in the contemporary young Chinese cultural narrative. They have brought a sense of pride and Chinese aesthetics to social media, where overseas Chinese, too, can express their heritage. Psychologically and culturally, the hanfu movement is playing a major role in shaping the new generation of young Chinese, blending modernity with tradition. It is nothing short of remarkable to see China’s Gen Zs coming together to embrace and celebrate their customs. Although the future path of the hanfu movement has yet to unveil itself, it’s surely a phenomenon worth monitoring. The revival of Chinese culture has gained force and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
28. What contributes to the revival of hanfu
A. The brands’ desire for more profit.
B. The experts’ advocacy of patriotism.
C. The youth’s recognition of traditional culture.
D. The economic development of Han ethnic group.
29. What do we know about Jun
A. She is expert in hand-made products.
B. She gained popularity for her adventures.
C. She cooperated with museums for her reputation.
D. She expanded her social circle thanks to her passion.
30. What is Jun’s attitude towards the current hanfu movement
A. Disapproval. B. Objective. C. Suspicious. D. Defensive.
31. What is the main idea of Paragraph 5
A. The future prospect of the hanfu movement.
B. The great significance of the hanfu movement.
C. The potential risks coming with the hanfu movement.
D. The Gen Zs’ quality reflected by the hanfu movement.
D
The Yellow River is the cradle of China’s civilization. And flood control and prevention have always been key to the well-being of the people living along it. Now, scientists can better work on these issues by giving the river a digital twin.
The digital twin of the Yellow River uses various technologies, including big data, artificial intelligence, and the internet of things. Devices set up along the river collect and transmit information to the command center. Based on the information, a 3D model of the river is presented on the computer screen. It’s like the Yellow River has a twin that reflects its real conditions.
One big breakthrough in the river’s digital governance is “smart stones”. According to Wang Qin, a lead researcher at the Information Center of Yellow River Henan Bureau, a smart stone is a water-proof stone-shaped device with chips, a battery, and a signal transmitter. They are buried in important dike locations to record and report the movement of dike stones. “Upon feeling movement of the dike stones, the smart stone sends an alar m to the command center for quick response.” Wang said.
“In the past, researchers had to learn the conditions of the dike on the spot by themselves, putting their lives at risk,” said Zhao Xiaoxiong from the bureau. “Now the smart stones can do this for us, more safely, quickly, and accurately.”
And in the sky, drones (无人机) are flying. On the routes designed by engineers, the drones become expert patrollers (巡逻员) of the river, looking at its dikes and flood prevention projects. According to Shen Lin from the Yellow River Conservancy Commission, thanks to the drones, researchers at the command center can get first-hand photos and information. “Researchers then update the 3D model according to the changes the drones reported. The newly updated model helps us test our floodwater release plans in case we ever need to batten down the hatches.” said Shen.
Under the water and up in the sky, intelligent systems are helping to protect the Yellow River Basin on all fronts. According to the Ministry of Water Resources, in the future, we can expect to see the construction of an even more comprehensive digital system for this important river.
32. A digital twin of the Yellow River is created to ______.
A. popularize the digital information
B. promote the local economic development
C. increase the effectiveness of flood prevention
D. arouse the awareness of environmental protection
33. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. The significance of smart stones B. The components of smart stones
C. The design feature of smart stones D. The working principle of smart stones
34. What is the function of drones in the digital governance
A. To take wildlife photos. B. To update the previous model.
C. To collect the needed information. D. To test the floodwater release plans.
35. Which of the following might be the best title for the text
A. Yellow River Seeing Double B. The Cradle of China’s Civilization
C. Bright Outlook of Digital Development D. Intelligent Systems Witnessing a Breakthrough

Did you grow up in one culture, your parents came from another, and you are now living in a totally different country 36
The term “third-culture kids” was invented in the 1960s by U. S. sociologist Dr. Rut h Hill Useem. She first encountered this phenomenon when she researched North American children living in India. 37 Caught between two cultures, they form their own. While growing up as third-culture kids may sound challenging, these children often benefit from their multicultural background. In general, they often reach excellent academic results. 38
Ginny, aged 20, was born in the U. K. Since her early childhood, she had lived abroad moving around with her parents every few years, before she returned to the U. K. to study. When returning to the U. K. to go to university, she realized she had benefited a lot from her years overseas. 39 While many other undergrads seemed unable to cope on their college life, she was easy to adjust to it.
Yet being a third-culture kid is not always easy. In fact, many hardships may arise from this phenomenon. A third-culture kid may not be able to adapt themselves completely to their new surroundings as expected. 40 Besides, when they return home, the home country can prove to be more foreign than anything they came across before. The peer group they face does not match the idealized image children have of “home”. This often makes it hard for them to form their own identity.
As a part of the growing “culture”, TCKs may find it a great challenge for them to feel at home in many places.
A. If so, then you are a third-culture kid!
B. About 90 percent of them have a university degree.
C. The languages picked up abroad were really useful.
D. The only problem was that she caught the travel bug.
E. After many years, these kids still could not adapt to their host culture.
F. Instead, they may always remain an outsider in different host cultures.
G. These children often get along well with those who suffer from the same confusion.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I watched my dad scowl (绷着脸) as he listened to the voice coming through the telephone receiver. I heard him say, “Yes, Miss Beisner,” and “I understand what you’re saying, Miss Beisner. I appreciate you sharing this information. We’ll see what we can do about the situation. Thank you for calling. Goodbye.”
Miss Beisner was my first-grade teacher, and I loved her. I thought she felt the same about me, but now I was beginning to wonder. The tone of Dad’s voice, the redness in his cheeks, and his repeated clenching. And unclenching of fists made it pretty clear. This was not a warm and fuzz y good news-from-the-teacher call.
As I was deciding whether I should lock myself in my bedroom for the rest of my life or run away from home, Dad hung up the phone. “Jacquie, come here and sit down. We need to talk.” Uh-oh. When Dad said, “We need to talk,” it meant he needed to talk, and I needed to listen. I shuffled (拖着脚走) over to the well-worn brown chair in the corner of the living room, plopped down, and waited to hear the nature of my crime.
Dad told me that Miss Beisner thought I was bright but not working up to my ability. She said I had strong verbal skills but weak study habits. Translation: I never closed my mouth, and I seldom opened a book. Apparently, my failure to memorize the addition facts, or even attempt to, was more than she was willing to put up with. Hence, the telephone call.
Dad ended our one-way conversation with a verbal outline for his plan of attack. Bubbles, our Toy Manchester Terrier, was going to teach me math. Silently, I thought, No way is any dumb dog going to teach me how to add, not even our beloved Bubbles. Out loud, I said, “How ” Dad summoned Bubbles from her bed near the stove and commanded her to sit. “Bubbles,” Dad said, “how much is five plus three ” Bubbles let out eight loud, crisp barks.
I was incredulous (满腹狐疑的). I couldn’t understand how a dog could add, and I was more than a little embarrassed by the fact that the family dog was smarter than me.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1: After that, I threw myself into math with newfound determination. ________________________

One possible version:
Dear John,
Hearing that you are in charge of holding the Chinese Culture Festival at school, I’m writing to give you some advice.
To begin with, it’s highly recommended that the festival should consist of paper-cutting, calligraphy and Chinese art paintings, which indicate Chinese traditional culture and convey the beauty of Chinese art. Additionally, some Chinese activities, Lion Dancing for example, can be included to motivate students’ love for Chinese culture. To sum up, the programme not only gives your peers deep ins ight into Chinese culture but builds up interaction between British and Chinese people.
I hope my ad vice will be of help to you and I’m looking forward to your good news.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节 (满分 25 分)
One possible version:
Paragraph 1: After that, I threw myself into math with newfound determination. Instead of hanging out with my friends after school, I would perch at the kitchen table, textbooks splayed out before me, and practice addition and subtraction. I thought to myself, if Bubbles, a dog, could learn math, then surely, I could too. With each passing week, I could see the fruits of my labor. Occasionally, during our study sessions, Dad would call Bubbles over. She would bar k out the correct answers to simple math problems —it was a unique, interactive way for me to assess my progress. I swelled with pride at my achievements, my parents were overjoyed, and Miss Beisner’s smile returned.
Paragraph 2: One day, I asked Dad whether Bubbles really knew how to add. I couldn’t help but wonder if there was a trick or if it was all simply a coincidence. Dad, with a knowing smile, explained that Bubbles didn’t actually possess the ability to solve math problems. In reality, he had trained her to respond to certain cues. When he posed a math question, he would subtly tap his foot a certain number of times, prompting Bubbles to bar k the corresponding number. Despite the initial disappointment, I realized that it was my own effort and perseverance that led to my improvement in math. My grades continued on an up ward path. Bubbles couldn’t add, subtract, multiply or divide, but she surely could teach.

(Text 1)
W: Hey, Warren. Would you like to go to the park today
M: I am sorry, Fatima. Since it’s so hot, I’m thinking about going to the shopping center instead.
W: That sounds good! Can I join you
M: Sure. Let me go home first to have a shower. Then, let’s hit the center!
(Text 2)
M: What can you do in the sports club
W: Oh, the usual things, tennis, swimming, indoor golf, and yoga... but basically I just use the swimming pool. (Text 3)
M: Now that you are seasick, I’ve quit looking for boat tickets for France through Dover.
W: I suppose we could go on the train.
M: OK. Let’s hire a car to travel around after we get there.
(Text 4)
M: Mum, I think I need a larger pair of shoes.
W: I thought we bought a size 40 so that you have lots of room to grow.
M: But these on my feet are only a 39.
W: Well, this time we’ll get a 41 to make sure you can wear them for longer.
(Text 5)
M: I really like these photos.
W: Yes. I love the one of the flowers.
M: Me too, but I think my favorite is the one of the mountains.
W: Oh, I thought you would like the one of the sea best.
(Text 6)
W: OK. Let me tell you some of the rules that we have. No pets. No loud music. No parties after 10 p. m. A month’s deposit. A month in advance.
M: I see. So I have to give you two months’ rent if I decide to take the place, right
W: Right. And you’ll have to pay gas and electric.
M: Yeah, I understand that. Well, I think I’d like to take this apartment.
W: Well, then, why don’t we go downstairs and sign the papers
M: Sure.
(Text 7)
M: Hi Sally, what’s the matter
W: I’ve had an argument with Jake. I promised to make a copy of a CD for him but I couldn’t get the computer program going. He was angry.
M: Oh! Did you explain what had happened
W: Well, not exactly... The thing is, he always laughs at me because I’m not very good at using technology. I hate it. I didn’t want him to think I didn’t know how to use my computer, so I said I forgot.
M: Sally! Communication is really important in relationships! I think you should explain what happened and tell Jake you don’t like him laughing at you.
W: Yeah, you’re right.
(Text 8)
W: Is everything prepared for the performance tonight
M: Of course! All the musical instruments have been tested. The staff are ready to start their work. The extra 60 chairs will arrive here at 5 p. m. The show will begin at 7 p. m. as scheduled. Then we can let the audience in half an hour earlier.
W: Good. Can you make sure the VIPs are seated first
M: No problem.
W: Also, can you make sure the stage is covered with a red carpet
M: Don’t worry about it. It’s all taken care of.
(Text 9)
W: So how did you get the idea of starting your own airline
M: I knew university wasn’t for me. At first, I wanted to be a pilot. Then I had the idea for an airline when I wrote a business plan for a school project.
W: How did you get the money to start the business
M: A family friend lent me $10,000. That was enough to hi re our first plane. In the first week, we sold 20,000 tickets and after a few months, I paid the money back. It continued from there...
W: What do your school friends think
M: They’re preparing for the examination for university entrance. Most of them think I’m crazy ... I work sixteen hours a day!
W: But I imagine you have a lot more money than your friends
M: Yes and no. I save everything I earn and invest it in the business- I only pay myself pocket money, like my friends. Right now, spending money isn’t important to me. I’m not interested in sports cars or designer clothes! I see myself as a successful businessman in the future.

M: Now, I’d like to talk about what you should do in lectures. This is a vital skill, so listen up! Most important of all is that you shouldn’t try to make a note of everything you hear. A lecture is not a dictation. You have to listen and decide what is important and what isn’t. Second, when you make notes, don’t write everything in full. Use symbols, numbers, or a short form of a word... anything to help keep pace. Also, try to organize your notes effectively. Furthermore, you should try to be an active listener. By that, I mean you need to try and predict what the speaker is going to say. So before the lecture, ask yourself what you already know about the topic, and during the lecture think about where the talk might be heading. Another useful tip is if you miss something then don’t panic. Lecturers usually repeat themselves. Something else you should be sure to do is listen for the main ideas, as well as the details, otherwise you won’t be able to see the wood for the trees. And finally, after the lecture, you should review your notes as soon as possible. That means basically writing them out again, but this time reorganize them, mark the main points, and even add your own thoughts and comments in the empty space. Reviewing your notes in this way will help everything sink in, and make a useful study aid.
