Globally, about 192.1 million animals are used annually for experimental purposes. Iran has conducted animal-based research dating back to the time of Ibn Sina. Although, like many countries, Iran regulates the use and treatment of laboratory animals, it lacks sufficient enforcement. To ensure ethical treatment of research animals, Iran needs better data about their use, and institutions and individuals need to take responsibility for their care.
Iran’s Ministry of Health, which oversees animal testing, requires all animals are treated according to international ethical standards. However, some institutions that produce or use animals provide substandard treatment, disregarding the ministry’s guidelines. To facilitate better enforcement of established regulations, Iran needs clear, accurate and reliable information about the quantity of animals used in research. All Iranian research institutions that use animals should be required to collect and report annual data on the number of animals they use,
the conditions in which the animals are kept, and the animals’ research purpose. Such data would allow Iran to track each institution’s adherence (遵守) to the “3Rs” of animal research: Replacing animal-based experiments with alternative strategies, reducing the number of animals used, and refining techniques to minimize the pain and discomfort research animals experience.
In addition to government enforcement, individual institutions should prioritize the replacement, reduction, and refinement of animal use. Iran’s medical schools and research institutions should establish an accessible database with comprehensive experimental details to prevent excessive animal studies. Ethics committees shouldn’t approve experiments that use more animals than necessary or methods that require animals when alternative methods are available. In some cases, technical sampling (using a small sample size) can replace experimental sampling (using a relatively large sample size).
Individuals should also take an active role. All researchers must be trained to adhere to ethical principles and understand unnecessary pain or discomfort in animals could affect the interpretation of data.
Maintaining international ethical standards for animal treatment is vital for Iran to establish its global standing in the field of medical sciences. Iran’s government, institutions, individual scientists, and public can work together to ensure ethical animal research.
28. What is the main idea of paragraph 1
A. The origin of Iran’s animal-based research.
B. The regulations of Iran’s research into animals.
C. The development of Iran’s animal-based research.
D. Moral concerns for Iran’s research animals’ welfare.
29. Why does Iran need better data about the use of research animals
A. To follow the ministry’s guidelines.
B. To be in control of animal-based research.
C. To ensure the adherence to the “3Rs” in animal-based research.
D. To replace animal-based experiments with alternative strategies.
30. Why should a database with overall experimental details be established
A. To follow government regulations. B. To reduce unnecessary animal-based studies.
C. To make research more visible to the public. D. To ensure the accuracy of experimental results.
31. What is the main purpose of the text
A. To encourage cooperation for ethical animal-based research in Iran.
B. To promote the use of an accessible experimental database in Iran.
C. To highlight ethics committees’ role in animal-based research in Iran.
D. To stress international ethical standards in animal-based research in Iran.

A bat and a ball cost $1.10 in total. The bat costs $1.00 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost
If you answered 10 cents, you’re not alone – most people give the same answer (the correct answer is 5 cents). It’s an example of how we often rely on intuitive (直觉的) responses – answers we feel are true. People give
answers that “pop into their mind,” says Steven Sloman. We don’t spend much time “reflecting and checking whether the answer is right or wrong.”
The bat and ball question helps explain why we often believe in fake news. It is part of human nature to believe, says Sloman. But “the trick with fake news is to know to verify” – in other words, to stop and question what you know. In one experiment, Sloman and a colleague invented a discovery called helium rain. They told a group of volunteers about it, but admitted they could not fully explain what it was. They then asked the volunteers to rate their own understanding of helium rain. Most volunteers rated themselves 1 out of 7, meaning they did not understand the concept.
The researchers then told another group of volunteers about the discovery. This time, they said that scientists could fully explain how it works. When asked to rate their understanding, the volunteers gave an average answer of 2. The scientists’ confidence gave the volunteers an increased sense of their own understanding, Sloman says.
According to Sloman, studies show that knowledge spreads like a contagion (传染病). This idea can be seen in many fields, including politics. “If everyone around you is saying they understand why a politician is dishonest,” Sloman says, “then you’re going to start thinking that you understand, too.”
Another explanation for the spread of fake news is “motivated reasoning,” writes Adam Wyatz, an American management professor, “we are naturally more likely to believe things that confirm our existing opinions.”
So in a world where misleading information is common, training people to care about fact-checking is important, especially in online communities. “We should check things and not just take them at face value,” Sloman says. “Verify before you believe.”
32. Why does the author use the example of the bat and ball question
A. To warn that people often ignore skills that they learned.
B. To show that there are various answers to a question.
C. To arouse people’s interest in playing guessing games.
D. To illustrate that people tend to rush to a conclusion.
33. In paragraph 3, what does the underlined word “verify” mean
A. To express an opinion about something. B. To make sure something is true.
C. To think about something for a long time. D. To follow your intuitive response.
34. When do more volunteers claim to understand helium rain
A. When Sloman and his colleagues showed them how it works.
B. When they have more confidence in themselves.
C. When they believed that scientists understood it.
D. When some of the volunteers explained it to them.
35. Which of the following is an example of “motivated reasoning”
A. You post a message online that gives your personal opinion about a news story.
B. You think a university professor dishonest when everybody around you say so.
C. You search online for more information about a doubtful story on social media.
D. You trust a damaging story about someone who you always judge negatively.

We discovered that we’ve all been falling victim to the Barnum effect. 37 , despite the fact that the description is actually filled with information that applies to everyone. It was named after P.T. Barnum, a famous 19th century showman, who would famously say, “There’s a fool born every minute.”
38 as pseudoscience (伪科学) — such as astrology and personality test — remains popular to this day. The Barnum effect explains why extremely general statements, such as the results of your personality test, seem so specific to you.
The key to success of astrology and personality test keep the statements as vague as possible, with a mix of mostly positive and some negative content. 39 See “At times you are extroverted and sociable, while at other times you are introverted and reserved”— who would not agree with that statement
40 Take everything you hear with several grains of salt.

The newfound team, now officially known as the Wildcats, started their basketball journey with a mix of eagerness and anxiety. The community center’s basketball court became their arena (竞技场), a place where failures were just stepping stones to success, and every dribble (运球), pass, and shot was a lesson in disguise.
Under Mr. Jordan’s guidance, practices became more than just learning how to play basketball; they were about discovering the strengths within and the power of unity. He had an approach to seeing the potential in every player.
One afternoon, as the team gathered around Mr. Jordan, he introduced a new drill that focused on passing and communication. “Basketball is a language,” he explained. “If you can’t communicate, you can’t win. This drill will help you understand each other without words. ”
The drill was a disaster at first. Passes went wrong, and frustration mounted. Jasmine’s quick passes were too swift for Mia, and Lucas’s attempts at humor during the drill only led to more confusion. Eli, ever the observer, noticed the tension and suggested a simple r system of hand signals they had discussed in a previous practice. Gradually, the team began to find their rhythm, learning to anticipate each other’s moves and communicate more effectively.
It wasn’t just basketball skills that the Wildcats were developing; it was a sense of belonging and trust in one another. Each practice ended with a team gathering, where Mr. Jordan shared stories from his coaching days, emphasizing the lessons learned from losses more than wins.

第四部分 写作(共两节, 满分40分)
第一节(满分15分)
How to Spend Time Properly
Time, equal to everyone, is more precious than any other possessions. How we spend that valuable time determines the quality of our life.
As far as I am concerned, there are three rules for effective time management. Firstly, avoid taking a full load. Be reasonable about how much work you can do. Secondly, make a list of all the things that we need to get done in a given time. Put the tasks in order of importance and delete any unimportant items. Thirdly, be focused. For example, electronic products can easily disturb our learning progress, and shutting them down while studying helps improve the efficiency.
Let’s make good use of time to make our life meaningful.
第二节(满分25分)
Paragraph 1: Soon came their first real game against a more experienced team. The Wildcats started strong, their hard work and team spirit translating into a united performance. However, as the game progressed, their inexperience showed. The opposing team took advantage of every mistake, widening the gap in scores. During halftime, Mr. Jordan gathered the Wildcats. “Cheer up! Make full use of your potential and find your rhythm. Unity is strength!” Taking Mr. Jordan’s words to heart, they determined to make the best of their own strengths to cooperate.
Paragraph 2: The second half saw a different Wildcats team. Jasmine’s smartness became the team’s secret weapon. Eli’s quiet leadership on the court steadied the team’s nerves. Mia’s newfound confidence made her a powerful defender, and Lucas’s spirited energy kept their spirits high. Though still falling behind, they played with heart, each member supporting the others. Gradually, they narrowed the gap in scores. Eventually, they won the game. The game was a turning point. It taught the Wildcats the value of perseverance and the importance of supporting each other. They had faced their first real challenge and became stronger.

M: Hello, my name is Harris. I ordered a pool table online from you last Tuesday and it arrived three days later. I was amazed and happy at the speed of service. But then the problems started unfortunately.
(19) The first problem is that the instructions included were written only in Spanish and Polish. (17) I can’t believe you wouldn’t include the instructions in English. Anyway, (18) I managed to follow the diagrams and get the pool table put together in about two hours.
(19) Once I had put it together, I noticed the white ball wasn’t in the bag of balls. How am I able to play any games without the white ball Luckily, a friend of mine came over with his white ball and we were able to play a game. (19) However, the roll of the balls was not very true---they kept bending to the left or the right. I don’t really know enough about pool tables to know what the problem could be.
You can reach to me on my home phone number: 348-28841. Or send me an email to tell me how you will resolve these problems. (20) I am also going to write a letter and post it to your head office as I think it’s important to have this complaint down in writing.
