Tu Youyou, an 84-year-old Chinese woman, was the first Chinese female scientist who was awarded a Nobel Prize for her work on 7 December , 2015. Her discovery of artemisinin(青蒿素)has led to the development of new drugs which have saved the lives of millions.
Tu Youyou was born in Zhejiang, China, on 30 December, 1930. She studied medicine at Peking University Health Science Centre. After graduation, she became a member of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. Later, she studied Chinese medicine for two and a half years with experts in the field from whom she gained a deep knowledge about traditional practices.
In 1969, Tu Youyou was chosen to establish a team to find a cure for malaria—a disease that killed millions of people every year. Across the world, scientists had been trying to find a cure. They tested more than 240,000 chemicals with no success. However, Tu Youyou had an idea that Chinese herbs might hold the secret. She studied ancient Chinese medical literature and visited experts in traditional Chinese medicine. She researched hundreds of traditional recipes connected to anti-malarial cures. Then Tu Youyou and her team began using modern research methods to study these Chinese herbs one by one.
This was not an easy task because the team had limited resources. However, after hundreds of failed experiments, they eventually came across a promising chemical. Tu Youyou bravely volunteered to be the first human subject when they were ready to start testing and the rest of her team followed her. The test was a success. The medicine they discovered, artemisinin, has now become the world's most effective drug for fighting malaria(疟疾).
Tu's work bridged the Eastern and Western worlds, saving millions of lives. She was noted for her bravery and her ability to use old wisdom and new methods to achieve her goals. Today Tu Youyou continues to conduct research despite her age.

The year 2024 marks the year of dragon, which is also called the year of Loong. Dragons, a kind of creature, are often present in stories in the west and east. In both cultures, dragons are generally recognized as massive creatures capable of flying. They have great power and are often associated with magical abilities. However, due to their different cultural roots and images, there exist significant differences in the way dragons are regarded in the west and east, particularly in China.
In Chinese culture, dragons most look like snakes and have four claws and no wings. They often have features of other animals, including carp (鲤鱼), tigers, and eagles. On the contrary, Western dragons look like huge lizards with big claws and large bat-like wings, and are often shown with spines (脊柱) or rough scales.
A dragon is a symbol of luck, power and high status in traditional Chinese culture,. They can cause weather changes and bring rain to the fields to ensure rich harvests. They are considered divine (神圣的) creatures, which hold an important position as the head of the four spirits. Therefore, to symbolize their power, ancient Chinese emperors decorated their clothes with dragon patterns. These clothes are known as dragon robes. Many Chinese view the dragon as a national symbol, proudly referring to themselves as “descendants (后代) of the dragon”. In the west, however, a dragon symbolizes an evil creature that spreads violence and terror throughout the land. They are believed to be transformed by the devil (魔鬼), with the ability to breathe fire or spit poison. Many western tales show dragons being defeated and killed to protect people from danger.
Nowadays, dragons continue to evolve, finding new significance in global culture. They are no longer associated with evil or good, but as complex characters with their own unique personalities and motivations. For example, Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon begins as a dangerous dragon but evolves into a misunderstood creature with love and compassion. This challenges the idea of dragons as naturally evil, presenting them as complex creature with emotions and motivations.
28. What do western dragons and eastern dragons have in common
A. They have rough skin. B. They are huge and powerful.
C. They are in the shape of snakes. D. They have big claws and wings.
29. What can we know from paragraph 3
A. Western dragons are a symbol of authority.
B. Dragons in China can protect people from danger.
C. Chinese dragons can control rainfall and breathe fire.
D. Dragons are believed to cause chaos in western culture.
30. What is new about dragons in today’s global culture
A. They are regarded as adventurous creatures.
B. They are closely associated with evil or good.
C. They have more diverse emotions and personalities.
D. They tend to represent human spirits facing challenges.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. The Dragon Elements in Global Culture
B. The Origin of Dragons in Chinese History
C. The Magical Animals in Different Countries
D. The Images of Dragons in Western Traditions

Humpback whales (座头鲸) are among the world’s most endangered whales. The main threats humpback whales face are strikes from ships and getting caught in fishing and waste equipment. Recently, scientists have developed a technology-powered mapping tool to prevent ships from hitting whales in areas off America’s west coast. The system is called Whale Safe. It uses equipment placed in the ocean to identify the presence of whales in the surrounding area.
Whale Safe was recently launched to the north in San Francisco Bay. There is a problem in the bay with ships hitting whales. Wildlife officials reported that a humpback whale washed ashore in the San Francisco Bay with injuries suggesting the animal was killed in a ship strike. It was the fifth whale to be killed by a ship strike in the area in 2022. However, the actual number of whales killed by ships is likely much higher because the bodies of the dead animals are rarely discovered.
The system uses three methods to identify and protect several different whale species. First, it uses flotation devices—known as buoys (浮标)—to record sounds the whales make. Second, it uses computer models to process current and historical ocean data to predict where the whales are most likely to be. Third, it permits trained observers and citizens to report whale sightings through a mobile app. The tool also records shipping activity and ship speeds. The collected data is then sent by satellite to scientists who examine it and seek to provide guidance to ship operators.
The Whale Safe project is supported by the Marine Mammal Center and the Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory. Officials from the Marine Mammal Center say they have plans to expand the system to other areas where whales face a high risk of being hit by ships. “The system combines the latest technology with thoughtful conservation efforts to create a solution to reduce risk to whales. This is where technology meets Mother Nature for the benefit of marine life,” said Jeff Boehm, a leader of the Marine Mammal Center.
32. What is the new tool intended for
A. Detecting the conditions of ships. B. Protecting whales from ship strikes.
C. Locating the bodies of the dead whales. D. Recording the movements of humpback whales.
33. What does the author intend to do in the second paragraph
A. Provide some advice for readers. B. Introduce the main idea of the text.
C. Add some background information. D. Put forward a new topic for discussion.
34. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the system
A. Its working principles. B. Its application value.
C. Its major advantages. D. Its operational guidance.
35. What will the Marine Mammal Center probably do next
A. Adjust the new system to other sea animals.
B. Provide professional training for ship operators.
C. Apply the system to other places with a high rate of crashes.
D. Seek cooperation with the Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory.

But with Jack’s leadership and the team’s spirit of unity, they managed to make a comeback and win the game in the last minute. It was a moment of teamwork and perseverance.
After the exciting game of basketball, Jack and his teammates were eager to celebrate their victory. As they gathered around the court, Jack noticed a small, shining object in the grass. Curious, he bent down to pick it up and realized it was a gold ring with a letter “H” on it.
Jack’s heart skipped a beat. He had never seen anything so valuable before. His teammates noticed his excitement and crowded around to see what he had found. Some of them whispered excitedly, while others looked at each other, uncertain what to do. Should they keep the ring as a souvenir of their victory or return it to its rightful owner. As the students hesitated on the playground, the ring shone brightly in the sun, as if it possessed some mysterious power that guided him towards the right path.
He and his teammates began to search for the owner on the busy playground, but with so many people around, it was like looking for a needle in a haystack. Instead, they decided to take the ring to the school’s Lost and Found, hoping that the owner would come to look for it.
On their way to the Lost and Found, Jack unexpectedly bumped into a visiting player (客队球员) who was looking around anxiously. Jack walked up to the boy and asked if he was looking for something. 参考范文:
It turned out that the boy named Danny was the owner of the ring. With a determined expression, Jack held out the ring. “I found this on the playground.” he said calmly. Danny looked surprised, then overjoyed. He grasped Jack’s hand and thanked him sincerely. "This ring is very special to me," Danny said. "I'm so grateful that you chose to return it." Jack's school was so proud of their honest behavior that it decided to award Jack and his teammates a medal, with the same “H” on it.
Looking at the medal with the letter “H” awarded to him by the school, Jack was lost in thought. Not only did the letter “H” mean the honor , but also it referred to their honesty and kindness. Jack looked at his teammates and smiled , knowing that they had made the right choice. Although this gold ring is precious, what is more precious in their hearts is the personal character. This experience gave them a deeper understanding of honesty. In the future, they would take this medal to do more good deeds and create a better life.

The detective said, “What does this suggest to you, my good friend ”Bobby thought for a moment and said, “I can think of many things...From a scientific standpoint, the millions of stars visible suggest there are millions of planets moving around those stars.”
“Go on,” said the detective. Bobby thought for a moment more and continued, “From a religious standpoint, I can see God’s work is wonderful and we are but a small part of this plan. From a weather reporter’s standpoint, from a clear sky, I think that tomorrow will be quite sunny. So tell me, my friend, what do you think about this wonderful sight ” The detective replied. “Bobby, how foolish you are! Someone has stolen our tent!”
