Portrait Play
Created by new media artist Zhu Lixing, Portrait Play is an interactive exhibition. It includes a large LED screen, movable benches and three touchscreens. The program shows images of eyes, noses and mouths from nearly 40 artworks. Visitors can change the portrait, using the images to create their unique self-portraits.

No matter how successful—or lately, unsuccessful—Manchester United has been on the court, which has always prided itself on an incredible ability to generate the game’s brightest young stars. The latest breakthrough talent, it seems, is 18-year-old midfielder Kobbie Mainoo.
The teenager’s emergence from the youth academy has been one of the few satisfying points in an otherwise difficult season for the team, and the highlight of his fledgling（刚刚起步的）career came during United’s 4-3 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Thursday.
After the host had seemingly got a draw in the 95th minute of the match, Mainoo showed his considerable potential by scoring a winner in the dying moment. Then, when other players might have panicked, Mainoo was composed and guided a perfect shot into the far corner of the net.
While his teammates celebrated wildly, Mainoo knelt down and slid towards the crowd after scoring his first Premier League goal. It was a sensational moment and a goal which might change the teenager’s life forever.
“I’ve still not come down from it. I still feel like I’m dreaming, to be honest,” Mainoo told TNT Sports after the match. “To start playing in the Premier League for my boyhood club has been amazing. Now I am just trying to play more games and win more games.”
There have been moments this season, though, where his inexperience has shown, but the future looks bright for the young midfielder who seems to have his feet firmly on the ground. “He is making incredible progress. A study led by the University of Eastern Finland suggests that teenagers who engage in active school transport（walking/cycling to or from school at least once per week） and leisure-time physical activity perform better at secondary school than their inactive peers（同龄人）. Regular leisure-time physical activity was also associated with lower possibilities of school burnout（倦怠）. The findings were published in the European Journal of Public Health.
The relationship of physical activity and academic achievement is complex. However, previous studies have found that especially school-based physical activity, such as physical education, can improve classroom performance—particularly in mathematics. Despite this, few studies have examined the association between active school transport and educational outcomes.
In the recently published study of over 34,000 teenagers, researchers observed that active school transport was associated with higher chances of high perceived academic performance and self-reported competence in academic skills. Being physically active before school could, for example, enhance concentration in class. The association was even stronger for leisure-time physical activity. Similar to previous studies, the relationship between leisure-time physical activity and mathematical skills stood out.
Leisure-time physical activity was also inversely associated（负相关的） with school burnout. As little as 30 minutes of weekly activity was associated with 24% lower possibilities of school burnout. Teenagers who engaged in leisure-time physical activity for 4 to 6 hours a week had 46% lower possibilities of school burnout compared to their physically inactive peers. Both leisure-time physical activity and active school transport were also positively associated with school enjoyment.
“To the best of my knowledge, this was the first large-scale study to examine the association between physical activity and school burnout among teenagers. Leisure-time physical activity can be an effective way to disconnect from schoolwork and the potential stress related to it. If schools can increase the amount of leisure-time physical activity among youth, both learning and wellbeing benefits can be significant,” said Juuso Jussila, a Doctoral Researcher at the University of Eastern Finland.

Scientists have mapped out oceanic “dead zones” from the Pliocene, about 5.3 to 2.6 million years ago, when Earth’s temperature was two to three degrees higher than today. This could offer insight into the future locations and effects of low oxygen areas in a warmer Earth’s oceans.
Oxygen minimum zones, or OMZs, are regions in the ocean with lower oxygen levels in the mid-waters to support marine（海洋的） life. These dead zones play an important role in the ocean’s overall health. “Their locations show where carbon and nitrogen（氮） are available in the ocean—so they’re important drivers of nutrient cycles,” says Catherine Davis, assistant professor at North Carolina State University.
Being able to predict the location of OMZs is important not only for understanding nutrient cycling but also because of their effects on marine life. Oceanic dead zones restrict the range of animals to the shallow surface ocean where oxygen is more plentiful. Davis and her colleagues wanted to figure out how a warmer climate might impact future OMZs. So they looked to the Pliocene, when the Earth’s atmospheric CO2 levels were close to what they are now.
“This is the first global spatial reconstruction of oxygen minimum zones in the past,” Davis says. “And it’s in line with what we’re already seeing in the Atlantic in terms of lower oxygen levels. Warmer water holds less oxygen. This dead zone map from the Pliocene could give us insight into what the Atlantic might look like 100 years from now.”
What would a future with much less oxygen in the Atlantic mean According to Davis, it could have a big impact on everything from carbon storage and nutrient cycling in the ocean to how fisheries and marine species are managed. “OMZs act as a ‘floor’ for marine animals—they are pushed to the surface,” Davis says. “So fishermen may suddenly see a lot of fish, but it doesn’t mean that there are actually more than normal—they’re just being forced into a smaller space.” Fisheries will need to take the effects of OMZs into account when managing populations.
