It has been five years since I left my staff job and became self-employed. I remember my terror as I walked out of the office for the last time and the excitement when I sold my first piece days later. Working for yourself, setting your own hours and being responsible for your success or failure are exciting. I left my job just as summer was starting, and my first few months were as blissful as the fair days.
When winter came, an office where someone else paid for the central heating and my salary was guaranteed seemed attractive. January is tough for freelancers (自由职业者), and it was no different for me — after masses of work, I earned none. I shared my fears with some businesswomen I knew — what if the reality would be more like what I was experiencing
Whether through choice or circumstance, the number of freelancers is rising and, if you’re just starting out, it is scary. I’ve been lucky that these women making money their own way shared key lessons about what it takes.
You can’t feel half-hearted about what you do because, at some point, you’re going to have painful days. When that happens, you have to remember why you wanted this life in the first place. Don’t quit your job for something that you think might be more interesting, quit it for something you can’t stop thinking about.
Setting up a business is tough. Rather than waiting until all is perfect, go for the moment when it feels as if momentum (势头) is with you. Look after yourself. There is no sick pay when you are self-employed. You can’t do a bad day’s work and blame it on your boss. You are the backbone of your business and you need to prioritize your health and well-being. Rest regularly and find like-minded people to support you and lift you up when things get hard.
Finally, enjoy it. Freedom is yours and, if you can make it work, there is nothing better.
24.What does the underlined word “blissful” in paragraph 1 mean
A.Pleasant. B.challenging. C.Awful. D.Boring.
25.What bothered the author when winter came
A.The cold weather influenced her working performance.
B.She eventually realized freelancing wasn’t to her taste.
C.Masses of freelancing work brought her much anxiety.
D.She couldn’t even earn enough to meet daily basics.
26.According to the author, why should we quit for a new job
A.To escape from the current pain. B.To satisfy our temporary interests.
C.To explore where our strength lies. D.To pursue what we really desire.
27.What’s author’s probable attitude towards becoming freelancers
A.Critical. B.Favorable. C.Cautious. D.Unclear.
C
Technology is developing by leaps and bounds. A small device such as a smartphone now has more processing power than rockets to the Moon once had. New tech brings many advantages, making our lives easier and opening up new opportunities. One piece of kit that’s been really taking off recently is the drone. This pilotless mini aircraft, originally developed for aerial (航空的) photography and warfare, is now bringing us benefits closer to home. In the last few years, tech companies such as Amazon, Alphabet and Uber have promised us delivery drones—bringing goods to our doorsteps in a matter of minutes. While progress in developing them has been slow, drones are becoming more and more involved in our life.
Drones are helping to connect with and enhance the lives of people in remote locations. In the UK, the Royal Mail wants a fleet of 500 drones to help deliver the mail to faraway communities. Windracers, the company developing the drones, say they can fly in fog and produce 30% fewer emissions than comparable piloted aircraft. And in Coventry in the UK, construction has started on an air center, which will act as a base for police and delivery drones. Urban-Air Port Limited is working with car-maker Hyundai on the mini-airport, known as a skyport.
Drones can also play a part in improving the health of millions of people. For example, an incredible development project by the University of South Australia is for drones to eventually be able to survey populations for disease by reading the blood oxygen levels of humans from the air. They’ll also be able to scan for other vital signs, like coughing and a high temperature.
It seems that the sky is the limit for what drone technology can achieve. The only thing that sometimes keeps it from working is regulation. Writing for the BBC, Jessica Brown says: “If our skies are to become as crowded as our streets, airspace rules need updating to prevent accidents.”
28.What does the underlined sentence indicate
A.A smartphone is more advanced than rockets.
B.The rockets to the moon are very powerful.
C.Technology is progressing very rapidly.
D.Technology is widely used in daily life.
29.What do we know about drones according to the passage
A.They were initially developed for bringing goods.
B.They’ve improved people’s life quality in remote areas.
C.They don’t cause any pollution to the environment.
D.They can diagnose and treat some diseases from the air.
30.What does Jessica Brown mean
A.The development of drones is quite promising.
B.It’s a pity that drones are limited to the sky.
C.Drones will be likely to cause some accidents.
D.Some latest laws are needed to regulate drones.
31.Which is the most suitable title for the passage
A.Drones Are Delivering Benefits Closer to Home
B.Developing Drones Is Facing Many Challenges
C.Drones Are Currently Booming in Every Field
D.Companies Are Competing to Develop Drones

A recent study says volunteering can be good for your health. Kids and teenagers who volunteer aren’t just helping their community. They might also be helping themselves. That’s according to a new research published in JAMA Network Open, in May.
Kids who participated in community service were 34% more likely to be in very good physical health than those who didn’t participate, the study found. And those who volunteered were 66% more likely to be considered “flourishing” or doing well in general. Kids aged 12and older who volunteered were 25% less likely to have anxiety than peers who didn’t. The findings come from survey data provided by the parents of some 50,000 kids in the United States ages 6 to 17. About half of those parents reported that their kids did volunteer work.
Studies like this have limitations. Parents answered questions about their kids’ health and community-service activities. But a parent might not know if their child experiences anxiety or considers themselves to be flourishing. This type of data also can’t prove cause and effect. It can only uncover associations. So it’s not possible to say for sure that volunteering leads to better mental and physical health. It could be that people in good health are more likely to have the energy or desire to volunteer.
But the data comes at an important time for youth mental health. In recent years, rates of depression and anxiety have risen among young people. More than 40% of high school students reported experiencing feelings of sadness or hopelessness in 2021. So there’s a clear need for accessible and effective mental health resources. Giving back to the community may be one such resource. And this study isn’t the only one to reach that conclusion.
32.What does the study suggest about kids who volunteer
A.They are more likely to help others. B.They are 25% less likely to have anxiety.
C.Volunteer work can lead to more anxiety. D.They can also benefit from volunteer work.
33.What’s a limitation of the study mentioned in the passage
A.Narrow study subjects. B.The single research method.
C.Narrow geographical locations. D.Surveyed parents’ lack of knowledge.
34.What’s a suggested way to reduce depression in the last paragraph
A.Joining a school club. B.Involving in outside sports.
C.Helping in the community. D.Taking time to be with family.
35.What is the best title for the passage
A.A Breakthrough in Health B.Volunteering: Good or Bad
C.Volunteering Can Better Health D.Volunteering: a Good Way of Treatment

The Debate on Drinking Coffee on an Empty Stomach
There’s a popular belief that drinking coffee on an empty stomach can damage the stomach lining (胃粘膜). This article investigates the validity of these claims and explores the broader influences for gut (肠道) health.
36 But some worry this habit could harm their stomachs. Claims on social media suggest that such a practice could lead to various illnesses. However, Kim Barrett, a physiology professor, assures that the stomach is strong, equipped with protective mechanisms like a thick liquid layer that protects it from potential irritants such as coffee.
While substances like alcohol are known to alter the stomach’s defenses, research, a 2013 study of over 8,000 participants living in Japan, shows no substantial link between coffee consumption and the development of ulcers (溃疡). 37
The idea that coffee induces stomach acid production is well-established, which could theoretically lead to heartburn, especially if consumed on an empty stomach. 38 A 2014 review found no connection between coffee and heartburn, whereas a 2020 study indicated a possible increase in heartburn symptoms among habitual coffee drinkers.
If you experience discomfort after drinking coffee, consider cutting down the consumption. 39 That means you drink less coffee in a way. For those who tolerate it well, there’s no need to alter your routine.
While the debate on the impact of drinking coffee on an empty stomach continues, the evidence leans more towards its safety rather than harm. Monitoring personal symptoms and making small adjustments can help individuals enjoy coffee without discomfort. 40 And what works for one person might not for another.
A.Adding some milk can also help.
B.However, studies offer mixed results.
C.Remember, individual responses can vary.
D.Nonetheless, coffee does have an effect on the gut.
E.There’s more evidence for coffee’s benefits than harms.
F.Many people start their day with a cup before eating anything.
G.It suggests that coffee doesn’t harm the stomach lining directly.

67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As an educator, I have discovered that the life lessons that students bring with them to school are the ones that I truly need to learn.
One story that describes this awesome responsibility starts with a second year college student. Every day, he would come into my math class, sit in the very back and avoid eye contact. When I would ask the class questions, I could hear a deep voice coming from his direction saying the correct answer every single time. I immediately began to investigate and found that he had high standardized test scores but his report card in school did not match his performances. I knew something had to change.
Through our school mentoring (辅导制) program, I asked him if he would like to be a part of a support team that was specifically designed to help him graduate on time with his classmates. This program required me to visit all of his classroom teachers, help him complete every assignment, provide him with materials to finish projects, and constantly remind him that success could be achieved if he stayed on this path. In his senior, he was able to make the Honor Roll (光荣榜).
This student had been living with his great-grandfather instead of living with his mother and six siblings (姊妹). The concept of family had not been demonstrated in his life. However, at school, this program provided him with a team that focused on his academic needs as well as celebrated his successes. The idea of family, where he was cared for and was seen as important, was able to become a reality.
Unfortunately, during his senior year, his great-grandfather passed away, which terribly influenced his newly positive view of life. But because of the bond that was established over the past two years through the program, I was able to keep him focused on what he could control to achieve his goal. He showed determination and perseverance, and he became a senior with his original class and had the opportunity to graduate with his friends.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Sadly, when graduation day approached, he refused to attend the ceremony.

【原文】 W: Welcome to Student Life! Today we’re going to talk about setting up a project of student jobs in your school. Having students do different jobs around the school is a great way to prepare them for life in the real world. It encourage s them to be responsible and also helps them learn new tasks and gain experience. However, it’s important to get students excited about the project, so the first thing you should do is let students know this project. Get the headmaster to make an announcement explaining the project. OK Then decide on the jobs you want and write out the descriptions of the skills and responsibilities needed for each position. Some typical jobs are Classroom Assistants, Recycling Officers and Computer Assistants. Next, ask students to apply for the jobs. Students should be encouraged to write letters of application for the job they are interested in. This is a great way to practice letter writing skills! And don’t forget you should make sure that students are guided by a teacher so that they take their responsibilities seriously. A committee then reviews all the applications and gives jobs to the most suitable applicants. Finally, it’s important to get opinions from the students about the project to find out which jobs are successful and which don’t go so well.

How are you doing I’m writing to invite you to join our “Campus Micro-Farm” activity. Here, you can engage in various interesting projects, such as planting vegetables, watering the plants, and observing their growth. 67.Sadly, when graduation day approached, he refused to attend the ceremony. He told me gloomily that he would not attend the graduation ceremony because no family member would be there to see him walk across the stage to receive his diploma. I told him that he was wrong, because on that day, I would be there as well as his six other teachers who had the unbelievable opportunity to see him transform into a student of self-worth, diligence, and potential.
I can still remember his smile face as he walked across that stage to receive his diploma. I still think to myself, what if that moment had never happened What if his answers were not heard What if the lessons he was trying to teach me were not learned I have learned that lessons are not always meant to be for students. As a teacher, I look forward eagerly every year to the lessons my students bring to the classroom, because I know these lives are ready to be changed.
