For many people, having a cup of coffee right out of bed is the best way to start a day. But a report from Asap Science says otherwise.
It says the worst time for coffee is soon after we get up. When we wake up, our bodies start to make cortisol(皮质醇). Cortisol helps us to think clearly and be quick to understand and act. The cortisol levels(数值;浓度)rise after we wake up and climb to the highest in about an hour. So there are two problems when we drink coffee during this time: our bodies will make less cortisol, and the cortisol will make coffee less useful. And that’s why some of us drink more and more coffee.
Then, when’s the best time to have coffee When the cortisol levels are going down, the report says. Cortisol levels are usually highest between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., between noon and 1 p.m., and between 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. So if you want to have coffee, enjoy it after these times, and this popular drink will help you the most.
Material 2:

Scientists studying the effects of gardening found that taking part in the activity twice a week can improve mental (精神的) health. A team from the University of Florida studied 32 women between the ages of 26 and 49 with no ongoing medical conditions. None of the women had gardened before.
The researchers divided the women into two groups: one group joined in gardening, while the other group took art classes. Both groups took the classes twice a week for four weeks.
During the gardening classes, the women performed tasks such as growing flowers, carrying plants to new places, and tasting plants that were safe to eat. After each class, people answered questions to express how they felt.
While both groups experienced improved mental health, the group who gardened benefited (受益) a bit more, reporting fewer bad feelings. The research team hopes to learn more about how gardening and mental health are connected. In the meantime, many women joining the study will continue to benefit. “At the end of the experiment, many of them were saying not just how much they enjoyed the classes but also how they planned to keep gardening,” said Charles Guy, one of the study’s lead scientists.

Material 1:

But a report from Asap Science says otherwise.”和第二段“It says the worst time for coffee is soon after we get up.”
根据“Then, when’s the best time to have coffee When the cortisol levels are going down, the report says. Cortisol levels are usually highest between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., between noon and 1 p.m., and between 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. So if you want to have coffee, enjoy it after these times, and this popular drink will help you the most.”

【答案】
Dear David,
I’m very glad to learn that a Chinese Culture Week activity will be held in your school. It’s a good chance for you to learn more about China.
First, a paper-cutting show is a good choice. As a traditional art, paper-cutting includes different themes like plants, animals, stories and so on. Then, holding a cooking competition can also attract people’s interest, which is helpful in learning traditional customs in different places. What’s more, talks about Chinese history, poems or even buildings are surely welcome.
I hope my suggestions will be of some help to you.
Yours,
Liang Hua
