In 1985, Wang Yongcheng became blind in an accident at the age of 19. Now, the representative of the 14th National People’s Congress (人大代表) often speaks out for the disabled, discusses their problems and finds solutions.
When talking about his blind life, Wang said, “It was like a deep hole, and it seemed impossible to climb out.”

Fast fashion refers to cheap clothes that are quickly produced by large companies to follow the latest trends (趋势). The goal of fast fashion is to get these new styles into shops as fast as possible, so customers can buy them. Now lots of famous fast fashion brands are popular in China, such as Uniqlo, Zara, UR, H&M and so on.
However, the fashion industry is not environmentally friendly. To keep prices low, fashion companies often use a kind of material called polyester (聚酯纤维), which is a type of plastic made from oil that is not biodegradable (可生物降解的). Also the process of producing clothes uses lots of chemicals, which can pollute the environment. What’s worse, fast fashion clothes aren’t made to last forever because they often go out of style quite quickly. Some people throw their clothes away when they don’t want them anymore.
As a result, lots of people are looking for changes. Some clothing brands are helping customers to recycle their clothes in exchange for vouchers (代金券). Some charities have taken action too. Every year since 2019, the charity Oxfam has held Second Hand September, asking people to buy only second-hand clothes in that month. The reduction woodcut (绝版木刻) is a kind of woodcut that uses one piece of wood to make a colorful artwork. The artist cuts and prints different layers (层) in order on the same piece of wood. Famous for its colors, the reduction woodcut was listed as an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in Pu’er, Yunnan, in 2009.
Leng Guangmian, 40, is a reduction woodcut artist. Leng started learning the art at university in 2003. He said that making reduction woodcut prints is just like a wonderful journey. “Every time we cut on the wood and then print, we never know what it will be like in the end.” As he sees beautiful woodcuts layer by layer, he only gets more delighted, added Leng.
But finishing such work is not easy. He said that before cutting, he needs to plan for the whole print first and choose colors for different layers. A big print usually takes months to finish.
Leng hopes his artworks show not only excellent woodcutting skills but also local culture and life. “For my works, there are two kinds: the Tea Horse Road, since Pu’er is one of the starting points of that road; and disappearing villages,” Leng said. “Many old villages in Pu’er need rebuilding because of safety reasons, so I want to make people remember their beauty before they are gone.”

Sounds crazy Many people had doubts over the decision of Hou Mingfei, the principal (校长) of No.9 Primary School of Hunnan, Shenyang, Liaoning province. But now, the principal has been praised by Yao Ming, the president of Chinese Basketball Association.

The reduction woodcut (绝版木刻) is a kind of woodcut that uses one piece of wood to make a colorful artwork. The artist cuts and prints different layers (层) in order on the same piece of wood. At a primary school in Liaoning, it is common for students to play and simply have fun for at least three hours a day.
Sounds crazy Many people had doubts over the decision of Hou Mingfei, the principal (校长) of No.9 Primary School of Hunnan, Shenyang, Liaoning province. But now, the principal has been praised by Yao Ming, the president of Chinese Basketball Association.
“Principal Hou has built an amazing school. It allows children to have fun in sports and unlock the possibilities of life,” Yao says.
In the school yard, over 1,400 big car tires (轮胎) are placed like hills for children to play on and have fun. On the playground, students run freely here and there. More than 15 sporting activities have been introduced to the school, including cycling, rock climbing and rowing (划船).
“Play is the most direct way for children to be happy. I think one hour of physical exercise a day is far from enough,” says Hou, noting that three hours of sports a day is a must-do for his students, and they can continue playing until 7 pm before returning home.
After years of efforts, Hou’s educational idea has been welcomed by most of the parents, and drew a great deal of attention.
