Twenty-five years ago,our neighborhood had a new family: a six-year-old boy called Tim, his little sister Cassie and his mother. They lived in a tiny house next door to us. They wouldn’t live there long — perhaps four or five months, extending through the up coming Christmas that year.
Things were difficult for the family. They were struggling to make ends meet, and it was usual to find them without electricity because of unpaid power bills. I tried to do what I could, but it wasn’t much because I was on a tight budget myself.
That Christmas, like others, my children Lily and her little brother Tom were up early opening gifts, running around the neighborhood, and showing off their gifts. As I handed my neighbors my usual spread of Christmas baked treats over the fence, Cassie walked by with her new baby doll.
Tim,smiling proudly, waved his only Christmas gift — a race car he had been dreaming of. These two kids spent hours on that Christmas day playing with their beloved toys. I was surprised when Lily noticed and said sadly, “Mom,they both only got one toy.”
The following morning, after breakfast, I prepared to go to the cinema with my kids, who had looked forward to it for a very long time. I had been saving money for the movie tickets, and finally I could afford them.
When I was preparing for the trip, I saw Tim’s mother put a box in the backseat of the car. Tim stood there crying as the car pulled away. I wasn’t sure what had happened until Lily told me the truth later.
“Mom, Tim told me his mom took his race car back to the store. His mom said they needed the money,” Lily said, taking pity on Tim. “Did his mom take Cassie’s doll back, too ” I asked. “No,just Tim’s,” Lily answered again. I felt upset but helpless.
Later, when I asked my kids to catch the bus to the cinema, I found Tim sitting before their door.

A boy called Jamy always arrived home hungry every day and his parents couldn’t figure out why, despite making meals for him. When Jamy wouldn’t share what was going on, his parents decided to visit he school principal and his teacher Callum, hoping they could offer some insight.
After talking with Jamy’s classmates, the principal and his parents heard a story they weren’t expecting. Although Jamy never talked about it, his classmates told them that he always came to school without food. The principal and his parents were shocked. No wonder Jamy was always so hungry after school! Was there something happening on the way to school that Jamy didn’t tell them
To make the situation clear, the principal asked Jamy’s teacher, Callum to talk to Jamy in private. During the conversation with the teacher, Jamy refused to say any further details about the situation, leaving everyone frustrated and helpless. And despite multiple questioning, Jamy still refused to say any knowledge of the situation. This left the principal and the teacher so confused that they were at a loss what to do.
Jamy’s parents were becoming increasingly concerned as their child continued to come home from school without saying a word about it. They hadn’t gotten any closer to uncovering the truth about why Jamy was always so hungry. The lack of communication from their child only added to their frustration and helplessness. They knew they needed to take action to get to the bottom of the problem, but they had no idea where to start, which puzzled Jamy’s parents.

3.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My mother believed in using things up. Last year, our cornfield had a bad harvest because birds feasted on the crops. It was probably then that Mom’s frugality(节俭)became even more extraordinary. She began keeping everything that seemed useless in the attic(阁楼)—worn-out clothes, old sheets, broken umbrellas, and some other old items. Mom’s favorite saying was “waste not, want not”(俭以防匮). My brother Josh and I weren’t sure what that meant until the “Affair of the Scarecrow(稻草人)”, which, as it later became known, left a lasting impression on us.
The story began with a pretty hat that Mom received as a gift to protect her from the sun. However, Josh and I could see that Mom’s frugal nature and fashion sense were in battle. Mom really didn’t want to get rid of the hat—it was new and had a lot of use left in it—but neither could she stand wearing it. She tried to take off the fancy decorations, but they were stuck on tight. She’d have to find some other solution.
Josh and I watched as Mom headed upstairs to the attic with the hat. “Waste not, want not,” she called back down. We heard boxes being moved around. Moments later, Mom leaned out, holding a flour bag full of straw, and with a mysterious smile, she placed the hat on it.
“What is that for ” I asked, confused. “A scarecrow! ” Mom exclaimed. “But not a good one yet.It needs a strong body to stand firm in the field,” she said with a frown. “And it doesn’t look scary enough,” Josh remarked. I had to admit that Josh, though younger than I was, could sometimes be more imaginative. Josh and I turned to each other, searching for a good idea. Soon enough, Josh’s eyes lit up with inspiration.

4.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I sat in the breakfast corner with my four-year-old son, Matthew, trying to ignore the ache in my stomach. I was still recovering from a surgery. I hoped for strength and happiness. But the future seemed so hopeless.
Matthew jumped up from his spot on the kitchen floor. “Bird!” he shouted, rushing to the sliding door. Sure enough, there was a white dove seated on a rubber tree. It sat there a few moments, and then flew away. I’d never seen one in our neighborhood before.
When I dragged myself to the kitchen the next morning, the dove was back. This time it was with a mate carrying twigs (嫩枝), “Look, Matthew,” I said, pointing to the tree. “They’re going to make a nest.” The doves flew in and out of the courtyard all week, building on the top of the rubber tree. Matthew could hardly contain his excitement. Every morning, he’d run into the kitchen and take his spot by the sliding glass door, talking to the birds while they worked. As much as I was grieving (感到悲伤), I couldn’t help but look forward to the doves’ visits too. We watched their progress as if it were a real-life soap opera unfolding before us. Gradually, my pain disappeared, replaced by joy.
Then it all went wrong. The courtyard was a safe enough spot for a nest, but the rubber tree’s broad, thin leaves were far from stable. One night, a strong wind blew through, throwing the doves’ nest to the ground. I heard the twigs break apart. Nothing good ever lasts. I wouldn’t blame the doves if they never came back. But they returned. And they paid no attention to the pi le of sticks that had once been their nest. They started again from scratch, though the wind destroyed all their hard work. The next day, and the next, they renewed their efforts, as if nothing had happened.

参考答案
1.
With empty hands, he looked down at the ground. Nearby, Cassie played with her doll in the grass. The little boy looked up, and his eyes mirrored the depth of heartbreak and disappointment he had already faced in his six years of life. I was so heartbroken that I decided to help him. Gathering my courage, I asked Lily and Tom whether we could use that money for movie tickets to buy Tim a race car. Unexpectedly, they agreed right away.
I was struck by my children’s big hearts. Then, we went to a store and brought a race car home. When my kids gave the toy to Tim, the boy was so cheerful that he jumped up and down and thanked my kids a lot. And they became close friends as they played together with joy. However, Tim moved away with his family soon. That day, we waved goodbye to each other. Years later, a successful young man visited my home. It was Tim, surprisingly, who still remembered us and our kindness that had made him feel better.

“Come with me!” Josh called out. The next instant, he raced upstairs with lighting speed. I hurried to follow him into the attic, where we began a thorough search. Mom was amused by our excitement when we found the broken umbrellas and use them as the backbone of the scarecrow. After that, we sorted out some old sheets and tied them on, The scarecrow now looked even scarier. We dragged our creation to the cornfield and planted it firmly in the mud, our hearts full of hope.
In the days that followed, the scarecrow stood proudly. Serving as a silent guardian, it successfully scared the birds away. Under its watchful eyes, our cornfield flourished this year. To our amazement, Mom’s useless things from the attic had come together to create something extraordinary. As we enjoyed a good harvest, her favorite saying, “waste not, want not”, echoed in our hearts. The “Affair of the Scarecrow” has taught us the value of creatively transforming seemingly useless items into treasure, making us aware that frugality is a good quality after all.

I knew I had to do something for the poor creatures. Their adversity stirred something within me. I was going to help them instead of just watching the doves persistently build their nest. Before the time when the doves usually made their visits, I looked through the garage for an old piece of shelving. By means of a ladder, I successfully hammered the shelving into the wall next to the rubber tree. Covered with some leaves, it looked like part of the tree. Then Matthew and I stood by the door, waiting and hoping.
“The birds were back!” Matthew announced. To our delight, they seemed to approve of the new platform and began rebuilding their nest. Matthew’s eyes lit up with joy, and I felt warmth surging through my heart. As the doves persevered, so did we. Their unwavering determination had become a source of inspiration for us, reminding us that setbacks were not the end, but an opportunity for a new beginning. In their brief existence, the doves had taught us a profound lesson about resilience and hope, one that would stick in our mind for a long time to come.
