I used to believe that only words could catch the essence of the human soul. The literary works contained such distinct stories that they shaped the way we saw the world. Words were what composed the questions we sought to uncover and the answers to those questions themselves. Words were everything.
That belief changed.
In an ordinary math class, my teacher posed a simple question: What’s 0.99 rounded to the nearest whole number Easy. When rounded to the nearest whole number, 0.99=1、Somehow, I thought even though 0.99 is only 0.01 away from 1, there’s still a 0.01 difference. That means even if two things are only a little different, they are still different, so doesn’t that make them completely different
My teacher answered my question by presenting another equation: 1= 0.9, which could also be expressed as 1=0.99999…repeating itself without ever ending.
There was something mysterious but fascinating about the equation. The left side was unchangeable, objective: it contained a number that ended. On the right was something endless, number repeating itself limitless times. Yet, somehow, these two opposed things word connected by an equal sign.
Lying in bed, I thought about how much the equation paralleled our existence. The left side of the equation represents that sometimes life itself is so unchangeable and so clear. The concrete, whole number of the day when you were born and the day when you would die. But the n there is that gap in between life and death. The right side means a time and space full of limitless possibilities, and endless opportunities into the open future.
So that’s what life is. Objective but imaginative. Unchangeable but limitless. Life is an equation with two sides that balances itself out. Still, we can’t ever truly seem to put the perfect words to it. So possibly numbers can express ideas as equally well as words can. For now, let’s leave it at that: J=0.99999… and live a life like it.
24. As for words in paragraph 1, what does the author try to emphasize
A. Their wide variety. B. Their literary origins
C. Their distinct sounds. D. Their expressive power.
25. What made the author find the equation fascinating

C. The question the teacher raised. D. The difference between the two numbers.
26. What does the underlined word “paralleled” in paragraph 6 probably mean
A. Measured. B. Composed. C. Mirrored. D. Influenced.
27. What is a suitable title for the text
A. The Perfect Equation B. Numbers Build Equations
C. An attractive Question D. Words Outperform Numbers

Researchers have developed a material made of collagen protein(胶原蛋白) from pig a skin, which resembles the human comea(眼角膜) and restored vision to 20 people. The promising result of the trial brings hope to people suffering from cornea l blindness.
An estimated 12.7 million people around the world are blind due to their comeas being damaged or diseased. Their only way of regaining vision is to receive a transplanted cornea from a human donor. But just one in 70 patients receives a cornea transplant. Furthermore, most of them live in low and middle-income countries in which access to treatment s is very limited.
To avoid the above disadvantages of traditional cornea treatment, the researchers used collagen protein from pig’s skin. “It is possible to develop a biomaterial that meets all the criteria for being used as human implants, which can be mass-produced and reach more people with vision problems,” said Professor Neil Lagali. While donated comeas must be used within two weeks, the bioengineered corneas can be stored for up to two years before use. The pig skin used is a byproduct of the food industry, making it easy to access.
The researchers have also developed a new surgical method for treating the disease. No stitches are needed with this new method. In a pilot study, 14 of the 20 participants were blind before the operation. After two years, all of the patients regained their sight. Three of the Indian participants who had been blind had perfect vision after the operation.
The researchers also want to study whether the technology can be used to treat more eye diseases, and whether the implant can be adapted to the individual for even greater effectiveness.
28. What is the disadvantage of traditional cornea treatment
A. Serious side effects. B. Low availability rate.
C. Poor medical equipment. D. Complicated surgical process.
29. What do we know about the biomaterial
A. It has higher production costs.
B. It can be stored for much longer.
C. It is able to be used for several times.
D. It can help people prevent vision problems.
30. Which of the following best describes the new surgical method
A. Successful. B. Ineffective. C. Convenient. D. Controversial.
31. What is the main purpose of the text
A. To spread knowledge about cornea donation.
B. To show the difficulties of treating blindness.
C. To call on people to protect their eyes properly.
D. To present a new breakthrough in the medical field.

Studies have shown the mere exposure effect, also referred to as the familiarity principle: inspires our decisions. It is a helpful psychological mechanism that helps us sustain our energy and focus our attention on other things. Getting used to new things takes effort and it can be exhausting. So unless we have a terrible experience, we are likely to buy from companies we’ve got used to. That is why companies spend so much money on advertising and marketing and why insurance companies openly charge existing customers more than new ones.
It’s not the case that we only desire things we already know. Some studies suggest when invited to share our preferences, we sometimes see less familiar options as more desirable. But when acting on that preference, we fall back to what we know. This might explain why sometimes the things we want and the things we do don’t quite batch on. We might even return to companies that treated us poorly in the past or stay in bad relationships.
It’s easy to paint the familiarity principle as an enemy or something to battle as if it is something that holds us back from living our dreams. But this attitude might be overwhelming because it tends to encourage us toward big-picture thinking, where we imagine that change requires a substantial dramatic swing that we don’t feel ready for. Some articles suggest the solution to familiarity frustration is complete exposure to novelty. While this can appear effective in the short run, we may only end up replacing one problem with another. It also risks overwhelm and burnout.
So what if we can work with the familiarity principle instead Familiarity is something we can learn to play with and enjoy. It is a setting for creativity and a pathway to expansion. We can push back the zone of familiarity bit by bit. If we think of familiarity as something that can expand, we can consider changing the conditions in and around our lives to make more space for our preferences to take root and grow gently. From here, we will start to make decisions, drawing from an ever-deepening pool at valuable options.
32. What allows insurance companies to charge old customers more
A. The improved service. B. The advertising cost.
C. The familiarity principle. D. The law of the market.
33. What can be learned from paragraph 2
A. Our preferences affect our decisions.
B. Familiarity tends to generate disrespect.
C. The familiarity principle is a double-edged sword.
D. There can be an inconsistency between desires and actions
34. What is the author’s attitude towards the solution in some arises
A. Disapproving. B. Tolerant. C. Objective. D. Reserved.
35. How should we perceive familiarity principle according to the passage
A. To treat it as an enemy.
B. To give top priority to it.
C. To replace it with exposure to novelty.
D. To gently use it to broaden familiarity zone.

When Mary entered the South Pole Penguin Research Lab, she saw her friend Tom gently stroking a penguin in his arms. As children of the lab scientists, Mary and Tom often observed the emperor penguins that were studied to understand how they adapted to extreme temperatures—insights that could aid human survival.
“We’re thirteen, Tom. It’s time to grow up and stop playing with the lab penguins.” said Mary as she started cleaning. “They’re research animals, not pets.”
“But the birds listen to me!” insisted Tom, his breath forming a cloud in the freezing air. “You’re just trying to be a penguin whisperer(企鹅语者) again,” Mary replied, shaking her head with a gentle smile. The penguins seemed playful as they walked, dove, swam and chased their live fish for sport before eating.
Suddenly, an alarm rang out and red lights flashed, signaling a problem. The kids rushed over to look into it. “It’s colder than before—there’s ice forming on the water.” noted Tom. Though always cold, Mary had never seen ice here before. She checked the habitat monitor and found that the temperature had gone down a lot. “The heater must be broken!”
Mary quickly sent a message to their parents’ research team, who were conducting outdoor studies. With the adults away, the kids would have to deal with the freezing conditions until help arrived.
Time dragged as Mary and Tom anxiously waited. The increasing cold caused them to shake. “I wonder what emperor penguins do in extreme cold, since they stay in the Pole all winter instead of going somewhere warmer,” asked Mary. “They huddle(挤作一团),” Tom answered. “They huddle together tightly so that the birds in the middle will be warm enough.” “What about the ones on the edge ” Mary asked. “They push their way towards the center, and then move back out to the edge, and struggle once more against the current of their fellow penguins to return to the middle of the huddle. Scientists in the early 21st century recorded it.” He replied as he stared at the large crowd of the penguins in the lab.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
“I have an idea to stay warm!” Tom shouted excitedly. Two and a half hours later, the parents returned with help.

My family tradition(坚韧与努力)
Good morning, everyone! It’s a privilege to share with you a time-honored tradition in my family that has had a profound impact on me.
Each year, on the eve of the Lunar New Year, my entire family gathers for a special dinner. But the true essence of this tradition lies not in the feast itself, but in the ritual that follows. After the meal, my grandparents take out a treasured photo album, flipping through the pages as they recount their struggles and triumphs. Through these stories, they instill in me the values of resilience, diligence, and wisdom.
This tradition has been a guiding light, shaping my character and inspiring me to become a better person. I am truly grateful for this tradition and the lasting influence it has had on my life. Thank you for your attention.
My family tradition(诚信与责任)
Good morning, everyone! I’m honored to share my family tradition with you.
A decade ago, on a bright Saturday afternoon, I accidentally knocked over a neighbor’s flowerpot. Overwhelmed with fear, I raced home and confessed everything to my parents. Rather than scolding me, they praised my honesty and encouraged me to take responsibility for my actions with courage. Their support touched me deeply, and I went back to my neighbor to apologize sincerely.
To my surprise, instead of blaming me, he gave me a thumbs-up for being honest, which brought me a wave of relief and joy, It was then that I grasped the significance of my family tradition. Honesty and responsibility have been the cornerstones of our family values. This tradition has shaped me into a better person and will continue to guide me in the future. Thank you for listening.
My family tradition(爱)
Good morning, everyone! I’m grateful for the opportunity to share with you a cherished family tradition that has had a profound impact on my life.
Every Sunday morning, my family gathers in the kitchen to cook together. As we mix ingredients and create delicious dishes, we engage in lively conversations and burst into hearty laughter, filling the room with the aroma of fresh food and spices. The cozy warmth of this atmosphere serves as a testament to the profound love and care that are poured into every meal.
This family tradition of cooking has truly enriched my life. Not only has it taught me the invaluable lesson of working together towards a common goal, but also the importance of spending quality time with loved ones. Most importantly, this tradition has shaped me into a responsible and self-discipline d individual. Thank you for listening.
“I have an idea to stay warm!” Tom shouted excitedly. Spreading his arms, he suggested joining the penguin huddles to get warm. Mary hesitated with concern that the birds wouldn’t accept them while Tom grinned with confidence and cautiously approached the birds which had already crowded together due to the low temperature. Slowly crouching down and gently stroking them with care, Tom whispered softly. Though startled at first, the penguins recognized Tom and let him into their group. At the sight of Tom’s success, Mary quickly followed his lead. Just as the birds did, the two kids squeezed their way from the edge of the crowd to the center and returned to the edge with the flow.
Two and a half hours later, the parents returned with help. Rushing in calling for the kids, they were surprised to see them were tightly surrounded by Emperors in a large bundle, safe and sound. Breathing a sigh of relief, the parents fixed the broken heater with no hesitation. When asked how they managed to brave this terrible cold, the kids exchanged a glance proudly, saying it was the secret of the Emperor Penguins that helped them keep warm. Patting Tom on his shoulder, Mary praised with sincere admiration, “You are a true penguin whisperer!” With a beam lighting up his face, Tom gave credit to the penguins who taught him a lot. Obviously, it is Tom’s keen observation on penguins’ adaptation to extreme temperatures that carries them through the freezing cold and helps them survive.

根据文章第一段“Studies have shown the me re exposure effect, also referred to as the familiarity principle, inspires our decisions. It is a helpful psychological mechanism that helps us sustain our energy and focus our attention on other things. Getting used to new things takes effort and it can be exhausting. So unless we have a terrible experience, we are likely to buy from companies we’ve got used to. That is why companies spend so much money on advertising and marketing and why insurance companies openly charge existing customers more than new ones.(研究表明,单纯的暴露效应,也被称为熟悉原则,会激发我们的决定。这是一种有益的心理机制,可以帮助我们保持精力充沛,并将注意力集中在其他事情上。习惯新事物需要努力,而且可能会让人筋疲力尽。因此,除非我们有糟糕的经历,否则我们很可能会从我们已经习惯的公司购买股票。这就是为什么公司在广告和营销上花那么多钱,为什么保险公司公开向现有客户收取比新客户更高的费用。)”可知,熟悉原则让保险公司向老客户收取更多费用。故选C。
33.推理判断题。根据文章第二段“It’s not the case that we only desire things we already know. Some studies suggest when invited to share our preferences, we sometimes see less familiar options as more desirable. But when acting on that preference, we fall back to what we know. This might explain why sometimes the things we want and the things we do don’t quite match up. We might even return to companies that treated us poorly in the past or stay in bad relationships.(这并不是说我们只想要已知的东西。
根据文章第三段“While this can appear effective in the short run, we may only end up replacing one problem with another. It also risks overwhelm and burnout.(虽然这在短期内看起来是有效的, 但我们最终可能只是用一个问题代替另一个问题。它也有让人不堪重负和精疲力竭的风险。)”可知,这段话表明作者对文章中提出的解决方案持反对态度,认为这种解决方案可能只是暂时有效,而且可能带来新的问题和风险。因此,作者的态度是反对的。故选A。
根据文章第一段“Studies have shown the mere exposure effect, also referred to as the familiarity principle, inspires our decisions. It is a helpful psychological mechanism that helps us sustain our energy and focus our attention on other things. Getting used to new things takes effort and it can be exhausting.(研究表明,单纯的暴露效应,也被称为熟悉原则,会激发我们的决定。这是一种有益的心理机制,可以帮助我们保持精力充沛,并将注意力集中在其他事情上。习惯新事物需要努力,而且可能会让人筋疲力尽。)”以及最后一段“We can broaden the zone of familiarity bit by bit. If we think of familiarity as something that can expand, we can consider changing the conditions in and around our lives to make more space for our preferences to take root and grow gently. From here, we will start to make decisions, drawing from an ever-deepening pool of valuable options.(我们可以一点一点地扩大熟悉的范围。 D“To gently use it to broaden familiarity zone”是对familiarity principle 的最好诠释。

the key to sth. 故填to。
故填is。
故填which。

The jungles of South America still have many mysteries. Despite current satellite technology, scientists are still discovering ancient sites throughout the continent. Their work continues the mission of many explorers. Perhaps one of the most energetic was Percy Fawcett, who started exploring at the start of the 20th century.(18)(19)In his life, the main goal of the British explorer was to find the Lost City of Z.(18)This is a name he gave to the supposed capital of a lost civilization described by Joao da Silva Guimaraes. He found the place one day in the jungle while searching for gold, yet he didn’t name it. But he said he saw massive stone arches, high towers, and complex ruins. This account later inspired many famous adventure stories, such as Arthur Conan Doyle’s book The Lost World.(20)In the end, Fawcett never found his lost city. For many years, scientists thought that Guimaraes actually met up a site in western Brazil that was discovered later. However, the advanced architecture described by Guimaraes is absent there. This has made the Lost City of Z more of a fantasy. But is it In the last five years, nearly 100 ancient ruins have been discovered in the Amazon region through new technology. Perhaps the explorers of the past were not so crazy after all.
