It was cold and windy. I was heading to the gym one evening in late autumn.
As I walked through a parking lot, I saw a homeless man who was about to sleep against the wall around a rubbish bin.
I was about half a block past him when I turned and walked back. I knew it was not a good idea to bother (打扰) this man. Many people in the streets have mental (精神的) illness. As a woman, it was unwise for me to ask a strange man if he needed help. And it was getting darker and colder, I was shivering as I stood before the man. “Sir,” I began, “I live over there. A police officer in our community once said they would try to help the homeless find housing if we called him.” I then asked him if it was okay to call the police for him. Unexpectedly, he agreed.
After making the call, I offered to wait with him. I was afraid the police would pass by and miss him. I did not want him to be unseen. Again, he calmly agreed.
When the officers arrived, they told me that he would have shelter (收容所) and they even thanked me.
Sometimes I wonder why I stopped that night. But that man made me realize that even though others might be better able to help, sometimes you have to step in because you’re the one present at that time.

A newly found ancient species (物种) may help throw light on a question everyone asks about giraffes — why do they have such long necks
Remains of Discokeryx xiezhi — a relative of modern giraffes that lived about 17 million years ago have been found in northern China. Their unusual features (特征) have offered new ideas to why these plant-eating animals developed their unusual shape.
The giraffe’s neck is often used to show a scientific idea called evolution by natural selection (自然选择进化论). In the past, scientists suggested that giraffe ancestors with longer necks benefited by reaching food that was out of reach for other animals, and so all giraffes evolved to have this eye-catching feature.
Today, giraffes compete to win mates by shaking their necks and heads at each other, so there is another idea that giraffe necks developed for fighting.
Discokeryx xiezhi didn’t have the modern giraffe’s long neck, but had other unusual features: its skull was thick and smooth on top and its neck bones were very thick. The Chinese-led team say Discokeryx was built for headbutting rivals (撞头斗争) . This may be because there wasn’t enough food at that time so they had to be super-competitive in order to live. The scientists suggest that “neck fight” was likely to be the reason why giraffes evolved to have long necks.
Once long necks had developed, being able to eat treetop leaves was an expected advantage that offered a new source of food. The advantage of reaching higher may still explain the modern giraffe’s long legs.
56. What can we know about Discokeryx xiezhi from the text
A. It doesn’t like eating plants. B. It lived about 17 billion years ago.
C. It was found in southern China. D. It was a relative of modern giraffes.
57. In the past, it was suggested that giraffes evolved to have long necks to ________.
A. be eye-catching B. look powerful C. win a mate D. get more food
58. What special features did Discokeryx xiezhi have according to the passage
A. A long neck. B. A thick skull.
C. Thin neck bones. D. Long legs.
59. Which paragraph further supports the idea that giraffe necks may developed for fighting
A. Paragraph 2. B. Paragraph 3. C. Paragraph 4. D. Paragraph 5.
60. In which section of a magazine can you probably read the text
A. Life and health. B. Language and culture.
C. Nature and science. D. Population and environment.
D
Moving from middle school to high school can be exciting but scary. In fact, any big change can lead to conflicting (矛盾的) feelings — like feeling sad to say goodbye but excited to start a new chapter (章节). However, change is part of life and learning to accept it actively can improve your mental health.
Managing change can help you develop resilience (适应力). It can give you confidence that will help you the next time you’re faced with change. Moving school is a good time to discover new interests, make new friendships and become more independent.
What if you like things the way they are now and don’t want to change That’s a really common reaction (反应) to change. According to experts, it is important to talk about your favorite memories from middle school and to get to know all the things you’ll miss. You could make a photo collection of your middle school experience, which you can look back on in years to come. Remember that moving to high school is a big event but many things in your life will stay the same.
Getting used to a big change can take time. Mental experts suggest practising the way you will follow to your new school and role-playing how to start conversations with other pupils. They also suggest writing a list of your worries and brainstorming some solutions (解决办法). What’s more, writing a list of things you’re excited about is a good way to remind yourself that although there are the worries, there’s still lots to look forward to.
61. According to the text, it is good for your mental health to ________.
A. read books B. move to a new school
C. accept changes D. talk about your feelings
62. What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph2 refer to (指代)
A. Change. B. Resilience. C. Confidence. D. Time.

B. We shouldn’t keep missing old things.
C. Moving to high school is not a big deal.
D. Nothing stays the same from middle to high school.
64. What can you do to help yourself get used to high school according to the text
