Casey and John, a young married couple, were driving from Maryland to North Carolina when their 36-hour nightmare began. They expected the road trip to last five hours, but a massive snowstorm led to ice-related accidents, and the state closed a 50-mile stretch of the highway for safety reasons.
With traffic stopped and no clear information on when the highway would reopen, some drivers abandoned their vehicles and set out on foot. Others, like Casey and John, turned off the engine to save gas and seated themselves in their cans. They tried their best to stay warm.
By the following day, a cold night in hunger and little sleep left them feeling tired and with little strength or energy. After 21 hours of suffering, Casey noticed a bread delivery truck among the waiting vehicles. On a sudden inspiration, she called Schmidt Baking Company, the owner of the truck. She left a message on the company's customer service line, asking if the truck driver could share the baked goods with troubled drivers. She didn't know if they would take her request seriously, but she wanted to try.
Her idea worked. Unbelievably, Chuck, one of the owners of Schmidt Baking Company in Baltimore, personally returned Casey's call within 20 minutes. He asked her to hand her phone to the company's truck driver, Ron, and then directed Ron to hand out the bread to the people on the highway. Chuck said he was proud to offer any help he could.
Casey, John and Ron were excited to pass out the bread along the icy highway to as many people as possible. Bogre Udell, the co-founder of a nonprofit called Wikitongues, who speaks four languages, met Frederico Andrade, who speaks five, at the Parsons New School in New York City. In 2014, they started a project to make the first public records of every language in the world. They've already recorded more than 350 languages, and plan to hit 1,000 in the coming years.
"When humans lose a language, we also lose greater diversity(多样性) in art and traditions," said Bore Udell. Between 1950 and 2010, 230 languages disappeared. Today, a third of the world's languages have less than 1,000 speakers left. Every two weeks a language dies with its last speaker, and 50 to 90 per cent of them are said to disappear by the next century.
Wikitongues has asked volunteers in 40 countries to film native speakers talking in the past, present, and future tenses of their mother languages. Native speakers are asked to recall childhood, share their stories and discuss their hopes and goals. One volunteer in the South Pacific islands of Vanuatu recorded a language that had never been studied by linguists(语言学家) before. Another volunteer found a speaker of Ainu, a language in Japan that has no relation to any other known language. However, priceless recording opportunities disappear regularly. Not long ago, one of the last two speakers of a Saami language died right before his recording session with Wikitongues.
A lack of protection and globalization are to blame for the dwindling language diversity. For much of the 20th century, governments across the world have forced some local people to use official languages. More than 100 languages in Australia have disappeared since European settlers arrived. However, most languages die today because of other factors; climate change and urbanization contribute greatly to the disappearance of languages.
28. Why did Bogre Udell and Frederico Andrade start the project
A. To test people's language levels.
B. To offer language courses to people.
C. To record all the languages in the world.
D. To find out the reasons for language loss.
29. What does the author point out in Paragraph 2
A. Language loss is becoming quite serious.
B. Many people are worried about language loss.
C. Language loss makes it difficult for people to communicate.
D. Some countries fail to slow down the process of language loss.
30. How did volunteers help protect languages
A. By writing down native speakers' stories.
B. By learning languages from native speakers.
C. By improving the living conditions of native speakers.
D. By videoing native speakers talking in their languages.
31. What does the underlined word "dwindling" in the last paragraph probably mean
A. Rich. B. Growing. C. Decreasing. D. Changing.
D
Technoference(科技入侵) is defined as everyday interruptions(打扰) in face-to-face interactions because of technological devices. Studies showed that parents use devices for nine hours per day on average. Smartphones are often used during family activities such as meals, playtime, and bedtime—all important times involved in shaping a child's emotional well-being. When parents are on their devices, they have fewer conversations with their children, and pay less attention to them.
In one study, 172 two-parent families with a child aged 5 years or younger answered online questionnaires about family relationships. Participants showed how often different devices interrupted their activities with their children. The parents rated their child's behaviour, such as how often they got upset or how easily their feelings were hurt. They also reported on their own levels of stress and depression(沮丧), the support they received from their partners, and their child's screen media use.
In almost all cases, devices were part of parent-child interactions during the day. Technology may serve as a refuge for parents who have to deal with difficult child behaviour. However, it has its drawbacks.
Electronic device use means parents can't provide meaningful emotional support and positive feedback to their children, which causes behaviour such as crying. But this adds to parents' stress levels. Parents are likely to spend more time with their technological products, and the cycle continues. "These results show edthat relationships between parent technoference and child behaviour influence each other over time," said McDaniel. "Parents who have children with behavioural problems become more stressed, which may lead to them using technology more, which in turn may contribute to more problems with their children."
So, it seems like the best solution to a difficult relationship between a parent and his or her child would be to simply spend more time with each other, and less time on their smartphones or computers.
32. What do the first paragraph tell us about "technoference"
A. It makes life more convenient.
B. It stops people from thinking independently.
C. It brings children more leisure activities at home.
D. It affects communication among family members.
33. What were the parents asked to do in the study
A. Answer some questions about their family relationships.
B. Use devices together with their children for several hours.
C. Observe how their children use technological devices daily.
D. List the benefits and problems of using technological devices.
34. What does the underlined word "drawbacks" in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Effects. B. Disadvantages. C. Benefits. D. Functions.
35. What does the writer suggest parents do
A. Have more face-to-face quality time with their children.
B. keep relaxed when their children use electronic devices.
C. Play with technological devices together with their children.
D. Encourage their children to spend more time playing outside.

Waste can be seen everywhere in the school. Some students ask for 56 (much) food than they can eat and others often forget 57 (turn) off the lights when they leave the classroom. They say they can afford these things. But I don't agree 58 them.
Waste can bring a lot of 59 (problem). Although China is rich in some resources, we are short of others, for example, fresh water. 第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Sally had longed to become a dancer since three. However, a terrible car accident made that ambition nearly come to an end overnight in 2011. Sally, then a 15-year-old high school student in California was injured severely in the accident that left her paralyzed(瘫痪的) from the waist down. For most people, that would have dashed any hope of a dancing career. But for Sally, it was just the beginning of new life. Instead of being a barrier, her wheelchair made her more courageous. "I wanted to prove to my community and to myself that I was still 'normal'," she said with a determined look, "Whatever normal meant."
In her eyes, Normal meant dancing, so Sally did it in her wheelchair right alongside her nondisabled high school dance team. "Half of my body was taken away from me, and I have to move it with my hands," Sally said. "It definitely took a lot of learning and patience."
After graduation, Sally expanded her dance network to include women who had the same situation as her. She met people online who had suffered various spinal cord injuries(脊髓损伤), and invited them to dance with her by sharing her determination. "It was such an amazing experience." Hoping to reach more people in a larger city, Sally moved to Los Angeles in 2016 and formed a team of dancers with disabilities called DREAM. "I want to show that dance is dance, whether you're walking or you're rolling."
In Sally's dancing team, there was a girl Ella aged 12, who had been feeling depressed since the terrible accident. Having known about the girl's situation, Sally made efforts to seek every chance to help the little girl find back the confidence to live. Thanks to Sally's continuous efforts, the little girl recovered physically and mentally day by day. The other day, an invitation to a national dancing competition arrived. After a heated discussion, they reached an agreement that they would recommend Ella to the competition on behalf of the team.
On hearing the decision, Ella felt more than worried. __________________________________
