It’s Saturday morning and the school basketball team is training hard. The practice starts at 9 o’clock but they arrived early to warm up. It’s quite cold but they don’t care. Last year the team lost all their matches because they didn’t train hard and they were sometimes careless when they passed the ball. This year they are playing
well and practising carefully. The coach is pleased with them because they are training hard and that means they now have a better chance of winning.

1. so that “目的是；以便；为了”，引导目的状语从句，相当于in order that。
Eg. I get up early so that I won’t be late for school.
我起得早以便上学不迟到。
【辨析】 so … that … 的用法
so … that … “如此……以至于……”，引导结果状语从句，so后面接形容词或副词的原级。
Eg. We trained so hard that we won the game.
我们训练如此刻苦，以至于我们赢了比赛。

2. beat (beat/beaten)“打败；战胜”
宾语一般是比赛竞争中的对手或战争中的敌人。
【辨析】win 的用法
win 意为“赢；获胜”，其宾语一般是比赛、奖项、奖金、名誉、财产、战争等。

玛丽在竞赛中获得了第一名。

3. pleased “开心的；满足的”
相当于happy或glad，常作表语，用来形容人。
pleased 常用的四种结构
（1）be pleased with sb. / sth. “对某人/事满意”
（2）be pleased at / about sth. “对某事感到高兴”
（3）be pleased to do sth. “做某事很高兴”
（4）be pleased + that 从句， “很高兴……”
Eg. I’m pleased to meet you again.
我很高兴再次见到你。
