Many kids can’t afford that. And a late fee doesn’t make people more responsible. What works is sending reminders. Or libraries can provide more overnight service for book return. Artist Jasmine Cho paints the picture of famous Asian Americans. But she does not use paper to create her art. She uses cookies. Cho said the sweet treats are meaningful because they can help people know more about Asian Americans. The 39-year-old artist believes her art comes from a feeling of not belonging when she was young.
Cho has got fans over the last several years as she always makes cookie faces in detail. Famous actors like Awkwafina and Daniel Dae have praised her cookie designs. The city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where Cho has lived since 2009, even honored (给……荣誉) her with a “Jasmine Cho Day” in 2020.
In 2016, Cho made a video in which she was making cookies for her online bakery (面包店). The cookies were exactly like her friends. So the cookies received attention on social media at once. Soon, others wanted her cookies, too.
A few months later, Cho held her first show. She made cookies of Asian American Pittsburgh natives, like Leah Lizarondo, the founder of 412 Food Rescue. Lizarondo remembers how surprised she was to find that Cho had made her into a cookie face. “I shared it as widely as I could because I was so proud to be among the people she did cookie portraits (肖像) of,” Lizarondo said by email.
In 2021, Cho wrote a children’s book Role Models Who Look Lite Me. In the following years, she has given over 20 speeches in different countries. For her, the biggest exciting thing is when young Asian Americans, particularly females, feel encouraged. “They tell me things like, ‘I learned more in your 15-minute talk than I have in my whole class that’s about Asian American history,’ or something like that,” Cho said.

When something is troubling us, it’s natural to try and make it go away. We might head to the doctor or make a trip to the local drug store for medicine. Unluckily these methods can be expensive and it takes time.
But have no fear, because you might be able to come up with useful home remedies (治疗方法) with nothing more than a few simple ingredients from your house.
At one time or another, it seems everyone comes down with the flu. Along with taking it easy and getting plenty of rest, you can turn to chicken soup to make you feel better. Mothers from around the world have been making it for thousands of years for sick relatives. The hot soup warms you up and its pleasant smell helps to clear up your nose. It’s often prepared with onions, carrots...which all provide vitamins.
Nothing drives people mad quite like getting the hiccups (打嗝). In some cases, nothing seems to drive them away. Next time you’ve got a bad case of the hiccups, try this sweet solution. Take a full teaspoon with sugar and swallow it down. The sugar is thought to get your throat muscle (肌肉) to relax. Just don’t overdo it, or you might have to take a trip to the dentist.
Headaches are another trouble. If you get one, try putting a pencil in between your teeth. A major cause of headaches is stress, and when we’re worried, we often tighten our jaws (咬紧牙关), which pulls a muscle that connects to our head, and this action causes the pain. By placing a pencil in our mouths, we are giving our minds a signal to relax our jaws. This can reduce (减轻) the headaches almost immediately. But just remember not to bite (咬) it hard.

Headphones are helpful. They are good for blocking out noise. And we use them to listen to music no influencing others. But headphones can be harmful, too. They can cause hearing loss if the volume (音量) is too loud. Studies show that one out of every 10 kids in the United States has some hearing loss. The cause is loud noise.
How Hearing Works
An ear has many working parts. Their job is to turn sound into something your brain can understand. And there are cells (细胞) inside the car that help you hear. “We call them hair cells,” Jackie Clark says. “They look like hairs standing up.” Clark is a professor at the University of Texas, She studies how loud noises affect (影响) our ears.
Sound moves and makes the hair cells move back and forth. Loud noises can damage (损害) these cells by getting them not straight anymore. Once the cells are damaged, they don’t grow back.
One sign of hearing loss is tinnitus. It’s a ringing in the cars. “It’s like someone is playing the violin for a long time,” Clark says. “It’s difficult to get away from it.” And the damage affects more than your ears. It can cause worries and stress.
How can you protect your ears Keep the volume on your headphones low. You should be able to hear sounds around you. And other people shouldn’t hear noise from your headphones.
Measuring (测量) Sound
Sounds or noises are everywhere. Raindrops are 40 decibels (分贝) while fireworks are 140 decibels. What about your headphones They can go higher than 100 decibels. That’s too loud. To protect your ears, keep your headphones at about half volume. And don’t listen too long. About an hour a day is safe.

An Unforgettable Trip
Last month, I went to Xi’an with my classmates. The trip was so wonderful that I would never forget it.
We went there by train and it took us three hours to get there. On the first day, we visited some museums and saw a lot of Chinese traditional paintings. They were wonderful. In the evening, we had some special food, such as biangbiang noodles, liangpi, roujiamo and so on. I like Yangrou paomo best, which is a famous local snack in Xi’an. The next day, we went to some famous places in Xi’an, such as the Terra-cotta Warriors, the Bell Tower and the Drum Tower. Of course, we took a lot of photos.
We had a great time and we also learned a lot about Chinese history. It was an interesting trip and I hope to pay a visit to Xi’an again!
