A campaign (运动) marking 2022 as the International Year of Glass shows why glass has been important for thousands of years and highlights its many benefits to us today. Glass from the past Historians think that humans first made glass around 4, 500 years ago in Africa and Asia. Early glass was made by crushing quartz, a shiny rock-like mineral (矿物质) and mixing it with plant ash (灰尽). It was heated and washed, then mixed with more coloring minerals and heated again, which made glass expensive and rare. About 2, 000 years later, a technique called glass-blowing was invented. Glass objects like bottles and bowls could be made far more quickly and cheaply this way. Space glass The International Space Station (ISS) has a viewing deck for astronauts to look outside. It has seven tough glass windows that have shutters (百叶窗) to protect them from small rock particles (微粒) that float in space. The glass also uses heaters to keep out the cold of space. _____________ Glass will be with us for many years. It’s not only extremely useful, it also plays a part in helping the environment. Solar power--which is much better for Earth than burning coal, gas and oil--uses glass panels to convert sunlight into power. Glass can be reused, recycled and made into new products. It’s featuring in all sorts of brilliant inventions too, such as bendable (可弯曲的) glass, glass sunroofs. that use solar power to drive vehicles, and mirrors that check the health of the-person Glass solar power panels. reflected.
