At eleven, I decided to learn to swim. There was a pool at the YMCA offering exactly the opportunity. My mother always warned against it, and kept fresh in my mind the details of each drowning in the river. But the YMCA pool was safe.
I had a childhood fear of water. This started when I was three years old and my father took me to the beach. The huge waves knocked me down and swept over me.
The pool was quiet. I was afraid of going in all alone, so I sat on one side of the pool to wait for others. Then came a big boy. He yelled, “Hi, how’d you like to in the water ” With that he picked me up and threw me into the deep end. I landed in a sitting position, and swallowed water. But I was not frightened out of my wits — when my feet hit the bottom, I would make a big jump to come out of the surface. It seemed a long way down. I gathered all my strength when I landed and made what I thought was a great spring upwards. Then I opened my eyes and saw nothing but water. I tried to yell but no sound came out. I went down, down, endlessly.
When I came to consciousness, I found myself lying on the bed in the hospital.
I never went back to the pool. I avoided water whenever I could. This misadventure stayed with me as the years rolled by. It deprived (剥夺) me of the joy of boating and swimming. Finally, I decided to get an instructor. Piece by piece, he built a swimmer. Several months later, the instructor was finished, but I was not. Sometimes the terror would return.
This went on until July. I swam across the Lake Wentworth. Only once did the terror return. When I was in the middle of the lake, I put my face under and saw nothing but bottomless water. I laughed and said, “Well, Mr. Terror, what do you think you can do to me ”
I had overcome my fear of water.
34. The author’s original fear of water was caused by ______.
A. his poor skill in swimming B. his mother’s warning of drowning
C. an outing to the beach with his father D. an unpleasant memory of the pool
35. Why was the author not scared to death when he was thrown into the water
A. He knew how to swim in the pool. B. He felt that the YMCA pool was safe.
C. He was waiting for others to save him. D. He came up with an idea to go upwards.
36. By expressing “but I was not” in Paragraph 5, the author probably means ______.
A. he was still a poor swimmer
B. he had not overcome the fear yet
C. he was not afraid of drowning any more
D. he was not satisfied with the swimming training
37What does the author’s experience with swimming teach us about overcoming fear
A. It is important to face our fears head-on.
B. It is better to avoid situations that cause fear.
C. It is impossible to overcome deep-seated fears.
D. It is best to rely on others to help us overcome fear.
C 35. D 36. B 37. A

根据第二段“I had a childhood fear of water. This started when I was three years old and my father took me to the beach. The huge waves knocked me down and swept over me.(我小时候就怕水。这始于我三岁的时候,我父亲带我去海滩。巨浪把我打倒,把我卷了过去)”可知,作者最初对水的恐惧源于和父亲去海滩游玩,被巨浪打翻的经历。故选C项。
【35题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“But I was not frightened out of my wits — when my feet hit the bottom, I would make a big jump to come out of the surface.(但我并没有被吓得魂飞神离——当我的脚触到底部时,我就会猛地一跳,跳出水面)”可知,作者之所以不是太害怕是因为他可以用脚触到泳池底部后往上跳,找到了向上露出水面的方法。
划线部分上文“Finally, I decided to get an instructor. Piece by piece, he built a swimmer. Several months later, the instructor was finished(最后,我决定找个教练。他一点一点地培养了一个游泳者。几个月后,教练的工作完成了)”讲作者学会了游泳,教练完成了工作。但根据下文“but I was not. Sometimes the terror would return.(但我还没有。有时恐惧又会回来)”可知,上下文有转折关系,说明虽然教练完成了工作,但作者还没有,他仍然没有克服对水的恐惧。“but I was not”与“he had not overcome the fear yet”同义。
根据倒数第二段中“When I was in the middle of the lake, I put my face under and saw nothing but bottomless water. I laughed and said, “Well, Mr. Terror, what do you think you can do to me ”(当我游到湖中央时,我把脸埋在下面,除了看不到底的水什么也没看到。我笑着说:“好吧,恐怖先生,你觉得你能把我怎么样 ”)”和最后一段中“I had overcome my fear of water.(我已经克服了对水的恐惧)”可知,作者在湖中央勇敢面对自己的恐惧并最终战胜了它。所以作者的经历告诉我们要直面恐惧,才能战胜它。故选A项。

One of the ocean’s noisiest creatures is smaller than you’d expect — snapping shrimp (鼓虾). They create a widespread background noise in the underwater environment, which helps them communicate, protect their homes and hunt for food. When enough shrimp snap (发出噼啪声) at once, the noise can be deafening.
Aran Mooney, a biologist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, suggested that with increased ocean temperatures, snapping shrimp will snap more often and louder than before. This could raise the background noise of the global ocean. “They make a sound by closing a claw so fast. This makes a bubble (泡泡) and when that bubble bursts, it makes that snapping sound,” said Mooney.
Mooney discovered a strong relationship between warmer waters and more frequent snapping shrimp sounds after experimenting with the shrimp in tanks in the lab and by listening to the shrimp in the ocean at various water temperatures. “As the temperature rises, the snap rate increases,” he said. This makes sense because shrimp are essentially cold-blooded animals, meaning their body temperature and activity levels are largely controlled by their living environment. “We can actually show in the field that not only do snap rates increase, but the sound levels increase as well.”
How the louder snapping shrimp would affect or benefit the surroundings remained to be seen. “We know that fish use sound to communicate,” Mooney said. “If the environment gets noisy, it has the possibility to influence that communication. That’s something we have to follow up on.” There is also the possibility that the change of snapping shrimp affects machines humans use to discover mines, which could lead to unpleasant results.
38. What can we know about the snapping shrimp’s sound
A. It aims to protect the shrimp. B. It is important to the ecosystem.
C. It has different uses for the shrimp. D. It is hard to be discovered by other creatures.
39. How does Mooney do the experiment
A. By observing snapping shrimp in the field. B. By recording the snap rates in the lab.
C. By analyzing the way shrimp make noise. D. By comparing shrimp’s sound in different places.
40. What might Mooney research next
A. Other uses of shrimp’s sound. B. Influences of the noise on other creatures.
C. Means of communication among fish. D. Methods of stopping shrimp’s snapping.
41. Which of the following could be the best title for the text

There’s a new AI bot: ChatGPT, and you’d better pay attention, even if you aren’t into artificial intelligence. The tool is an AI chatbot system that OpenAI released in November 2022 to show off and test what a very large, powerful AI system can achieve.
ChatGPT remembers the thread of your dialogue, using previous questions and answers to inform its next responses. It derives its answers from huge volumes of information on the Internet. ChatGPT is built on top of the OpenAI GPT-3 family of large language models and is fine-tuned (a method of transfer learning) using both supervised and reinforcement learning
You can ask ChatGPT anything, like explaining physics, asking for birthday party ideas and getting programming help. Perhaps it’s not smart enough to replace all humans yet, but it can be creative, and its answers can sound downright authoritative. A few days after its launch, more than 1 million people were trying out ChatGPT. UBS analyst Lloyd Walmsley estimated in February 2023 that ChatGPT reached 100 million monthly users in January, accomplishing in 2 months what took TikTok about 9 months and Instagram two and a half years.
ChatGPT is free to use at the moment because it is still in its research phase. But when too many people hop onto the server, it overloads and can’t process your request. It just means you should try visiting the site at a later time when fewer people are trying to access it. If you want to skip the wait and have reliable access, there is an option for you. As of Feb. 1, 2023, OpenAI has a ChatGPT pro plan, ChatGPT Plus, which allows users to have general access even during peak times. This service does come at a cost of $20/month.
However, ChatGPT can not replace Google. ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence robot that provides solutions to your questions, but Google is a search engine in which you can search for as much information as possible. ChatGPT has limited knowledge due to its programming but Google has unlimited knowledge which is updated every day.

44. What is ChatGPT Plus intended for
A. Guiding users to experience free services.
B. Giving users priority access during peak hours.
C. Allowing net surfers to skip advertisements.

45. What is a limitation of ChatGPT compared with Google

根据上文中的“When I was 24, I moved to America, 11,000 kilometers away from my homeland.”

Bhe had not overcome the fear yet
C. he was not afraid of drowning any more
D. he was not satisfied with the swimming training
37. What does the author’s experience with swimming teach us about overcoming fear
A. It is important to face our fears head-on.
B. It is better to avoid situations that cause fear.
C. It is impossible to overcome deep-seated fears.
D. It is best to rely on others to help us overcome fear.
C
A. Underwater World Is No Longer Quiet B. Small Animals Make a Big Difference
C. Warming Oceans Are Getting Louder D. Snapping Shrimp’s Noise Speaks Much
D
You can ask ChatGPT anything like explaining physics, asking for birthday party ideas and getting programming help.
42. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about ChatGPT
A. Its working theory. B. Its language model.
C. Its design inspiration. D. Its development process.
43. Why does the author list figures in paragraph 3
A. To show the popularity of ChatGPT.
B. To stress the high cost of inventing ChatGPT.
C. To present the creativity of artificial intelligence.
D. To prove the necessity of developing tools for chatting online.
44. What is ChatGPT Plus intended for
A. Guiding users to experience free services.
B. Giving users priority access during peak hours.
C. Allowing net surfers to skip advertisements.
D. Helping researchers detect the failure of the system.
45. What is a limitation of ChatGPT compared with Google
A. It may provide replies unrelated to the questions.
B. It can only update information at a fixed time
C. It needs longer to provide solutions.
D. It operates based on limited data.
